Place: Archery Supplies Storage Room, Dek Secret Niche
Filling a pot with dirt, Vaas says to Selia without looking up from his task, “Selia I think I am going to take up archery. What do you think?” Selia known Vaas since he was born, and she also knew his parents. Vaas' father was a mellow man. Who enjoyed playing his music, and he didn't care much for elevating himself to a higher station in life. Selia was proud to call him son. He was her youngest of three, and she always loved the way he played his flute. Vaas had his fathers musical talent, but he got his spirit from his mother. She frowns to herself and thinks of his mother, 'He is too much like his mother.' Vaas' mother on the other hand was a charismatic little red haired minx. Who was more trouble than she was worth. Vaas' mother was a avora hunter. Who enjoyed the nightlife of Inclement Weather way to much for Selia liking. Vaas' father a shy man was captivated by the outspoken and passionate young woman. Selia believe the young woman was in love with her own voice because she never stopped talking. Selia would have liked the beautiful young woman, but she always got her son into trouble with the Valintar by distracting him from his daily duties. Selia sitting by him by him looks up from her pot at the blind man, and says with a hesitant tone in her voice, “Sweety. Just stick to your flute and falconry. I don't think you will have much success at archery.”
Vaas tilts his head in confusion towards the sound of Selia voice. He sits their silent can't believing what he just heard come from his mentors mouth. Selia always taught him to try everything regardless of his blindness. He gives the older woman a concerned look and asks slowly, “Selia are you feeling alright? Do I need to bring you to the healers?” Selia frowns at the young man smart mouth and thinks to herself, 'Yes, he is definitely Narai's son.' Selia laughs out loud despite Vaas' old joke and says to him, “Vaas I doubt the instructors will teach you at the ranges because you are blind. What about your friend Aela. Maybe she will give you private lessons.”
Vaas frowns at her suggestion, and Aela has her own challenges to deal with in her own life. Besides, Vaas really doesn't want to try explaining to her his want to learning the bow. What if she reacts the same way Selia just did? He shakes his head, stops thinking about Aela, and says firmly to Selia, “Aela has better things to do than to teach me. Honestly, Selia. I am a Inarta, and it is our job to provide food for Wind Reach. Yes, I can catch rabbits and squirrels with Wind Dancer, but rabbits and squirrels won't feed the people of Wind Reach through the winter.” Realizing this is the first time, he actually got angry at Selia starts to feel a little embarrass about how he reacted to her. Ever since the spring storm Vaas' has been starting to look at his life, and what is really important to the city is food. Being a musician is honorable job in Wind Reach, but it won't feed starving people when things get tough. He wants to be useful to Wind Reach and not feel so worthless in these tough times. Vaas frowns and says to Selia, “I am sorry Selia, but if your not going to help me fine. I can figure something on my own.”
Selia looks at him sadly and takes a deep breath, “OK fine. I know of a place for you to go and learn without the scrutiny of your peers. I really not sure if I should tell you, but the deks in the archery storage rooms have set up a make shift archery range down in the storage caverns. If you can get past the guard, you should be able to convince the dek down their to train you in the basics of archery. I think that is your best bet unless you feel comfortable in going to the Fletcher’s Corner.” Vaas heard of Fletchers Corner and he not really sure if he ready to fail horribly in front of people. He knows right away. He looks at Selia and says, “I think I can get past the guard. I'll just have to play the part of a dek.”
Selia gives Vaas a strange look, but she decides to help him. Selia smiles at the young man and she walks over to one of her dek servants helping her in the garden. When she approaches the Dek man looks up at her, and says in soft voice, “Avora Selia may I help you with anything?” Selia looks over the middle aged man and says sweetly to him, “Take a break, but first I need your clothes.” The Dek nods and removes his lontev and hands it to Selia. Selia smiles to him, but inwardly groins at his swift obedience and says to him, “Go change into a clean pair of clothes. I will get you new lontev before the night is over.” She walks back to Vaas' and kneels down next to him, takes his hand from the flower pot, a sets the dirty lontev in his hand. She smiles and says to him, “Put some dirt on your face and some in your hair. Your two clean to be a convincing dek, sweety. You are your mothers son you should be able to get passed the guard with no issues.” Vaas ears perk up when she mentions his mother, but he decides to save the awkward questions for later. He takes some soil and smears a little bit on his face, and he smears it along his forearms. Vaas looks up at Selia and smiles, “Do I look like a dek? Or I need more dirt?” Selia laughs out loud and says with a smirk, “Your fine with the dirt, Vaas. We don't want to go overboard with it. Get dressed and I'll take you down to the storage cavern.”
As Vaas walks with Selia down the corridors, she start telling him the route to the storage caverns, so he can head there in the future. Vaas enjoys Selia company and he thinks of her as the grandmother he never had. He never told her this thought, but by the way, she is always there for him. He thinks she knows how he feels about her. Tapping his staff along the stone floor, Vaas says to Selia, “Sorry I raised my voice to you. I hope you forgive me.” Selia smiles and says softly to him, “I am glad you stood up for yourself Vaas. I wouldn't have helped you if you weren't serious about learning archery. I had to make sure this is what you wanted.” Vaas smiles to her and continues following her down the corridor. Eventually they make their way down into the caves. Vaas can smell the humidity in the cold air and he can feel the cobble stone gave way to smooth dirt. Selia leads him to a intersection and says to him, “If you turn left Vaas, you will head to the Underground Forest, but if you go right it will lead you to the storage cavern. The guard should stop you, so good luck Vaas you are on your own from here on.” Selia gives him a hug and head back down the corridor.
