Kijanu (kee-HAN-oo), a Chaktawe female of the Kalanue tribe, was born Winter fifty-second, four hundred and ninety-seven years after the Valterrian. |
physical appearance. Born among the solemn people of the Kalanue, Kijanu embodies all that a Chaktawe should be. With long, slender legs, copper skin, jet eyes and glossy black hair, Kijanu shows the promise of becoming a lovely flower in the desert. Her face still is round with the baby fat of her childhood, and her chest remains flatter than most other girls her age, but unlike them she can run, and does so in pursuit of her goats, her dog, and Benshira that offer her another chance at trading. She is rarely seen without her worn staff sling or the customary feathers and fur braided into her hair. To other Chaktawe, she is just another one of them approaching the day of her Searching. At night, Kijanu curls up beneath her blanket with her dog, shielded against the cold due to the tent. On days not roaming the cliffs, leading her herd after her family, she can be seen chasing away predators with her dog and sling. She makes a formidable opponent when she uses her staff for its intended purpose. |
history. Kijanu's life began with her tumultuous birth, five chimes after her brother was introduced to the world. Small, premature, her life, and the life of her brother, was mourned. The elders thought she wouldn't live through the Winter, but the hope of a mother torn saved the twins from a merciful death. After surviving the Winter of the desert, the twins were given the names Kanipa and Jazipar until they turned five, where Kanipa was given the name Kijanu, for her strong will to survive, and Jazipar named Tajipash, for his resilience in the face of death. To date, Kijanu lives in the desert, a shepherd of the rocky cliffs, armed with a sling and a fierce loyalty to the desert, her people, and their gods. |
Kijanu is a strong-willed individual, devoted to the cause of her people, which is usually survival in their harsh homeland. She is a shepherd, trained to tend herds and lead flocks to follow her tribe, taught to brandish a sling as well as a tongue when the need arose. She dances as well, to honour Makutsi and Eywaat. Intelligence shimmers within her mischevious black eyes, a trait shared with Tajipash. Morally, Kijanu will fight for the good of her people against any threats that come their way, from Benshira shepherds to Eypharian slavers. While a woman blooming, she had developed quick reflexes to deal blows with her sling so as to persuade would-be attackers that hers was not a flock worth preying upon. She may be racially inexperienced, seeing foreigners from beyond the desert as Outsiders, or even Invaders, and inclined to be superstitious, but she is a friend to those who approach her with kindness. In love with her duties as a shepherd and looking forward to her future as a true woman of the tribe, Kijanu is nothing if not filled to the brim with hope, love, and courage. |
