What you can't learn from books (Euthisa)

Postby Syrin on September 2nd, 2012, 4:28 am

Time Stamp: Day 2, Fall, 512AV, Noon
Location: The Enclave

Finding a lone table in the back of the library, Syrin leans back in his chair reading about the local folklore of Wind Reach and the surrounding region. Besides the young man is two books neatly stacked to his side. Both books are about the culture of the Inartan people, but one of the authors is a foreign author and the other one is written by a Inartan author. Turning the page slowly of the book on Inartan folklore, his eyes focus on something interesting, and he sets the book on the table. He reaches down and pulls out of his leather backpack a leather bound journal, a vial of ink, and a quill. He turns the the journal a quarter of the way to a new page. He flips over his book, so it lies flat on the table. He opens the vial of ink and dips his quill in the ink, and he starts to write.

Two hours pass and he is still buried in the book of folktales. Occasionally he gets up and consults the map of the region. Holding his journal in his hand, his eyes flash back to his notes and back to map. In a span of five minutes, he has a range of emotion cross his face sad, happy and anger, but he says nothing out loud accept the occasional mumbling in common to himself. Annoyed at the map, he twirls around, closes the journal, and walks back to his table. Once he at the table, he tosses his book on it, so it slides into the other books. Lost in thought, he sits on the edge of the table and starts stroking his chin staring off into the wall. Twirling a stray piece of hair in his hands, he just sits their for ten minutes lost in thought.

Syrin stops rubbing his chin, pushes him off the table, and he slumps back into the chair. He frowns as he puts the stopper on his vial of ink, and he picks up the book on Inartan culture written by a Inartan. Turning the pages quickly, he smirks to himself in amusement that the author is definitely showing his bias about his people. It is understandable to say the least, and there is nothing wrong with a little national pride. However, the author starts writing about the superiority of the social structure of his people over the chaos and anarchy of the other social systems around Mizahar. Syrin mood shifts to one of amusement, and he is starting to get truly entertained at authors opinions of the culture. Syrin figures this man must be a politician because there is too much emotional baggage in his writing and not enough facts to back up his claims. However, the author did hold on his audience since Syrin been reading the book for at least a half an hour straight. Laughing quietly to himself the whole time.

Closing the book, Syrin puts it in his lap and looks around the library. Syrin looks around the hall and notices that there was a few patrons scattered around the hall. Most of them too involved in their books to take notice of the people around them. His eyes fall upon a beautiful young woman with long crimson hair and milky white skin. He watches her a moment as she seems involved in her task of rearranging the books on the shelves. Figuring, since he going to be in Wind Reach for awhile he might as well meet some of the locals. He grabs the book. He was just reading and walks over to the young woman. He waits until she is finished her task, and he says politely in Nari with a smile on his face, “I hope I am not bothering you, but my name is Syrin, and I was curious if I can ask you a question about Inartan culture.” He holds up the book. He was reading and says with general curiosity in his voice, “Bear in mind, I have just arrived in Wind Reach two days ago, so my knowledge of your culture is well limited to what I can read in books at the moment, so I figure I should ask you.” He smirks in her direction and asks her the question, “Why do men of your society not wear shirts? I guess I am curious about this question because I am going to be staying in the city awhile, and I was wondering if I should embrace the social norm. I know this might be a odd question, but do the men of your society ever complain about being cold?” Honestly he was curious about this question ever since he arrived in Wind Reach a day ago. He hopes she doesn't take offense by his question because he wasn't trying to insult her culture. He is truly interested in finding out the social norms of the Inartan culture.

What you can't learn from books (Euthisa)

Postby Euthisa on September 8th, 2012, 6:00 pm

The day's work in The Enclave went just as any other. Euthisa helped those who needed it, and when she wasn't busy with a visitor, she put books away and reorganized them. Most didn't put a book back where they found it when they were finished, so she either had to hunt them down and put them in their proper place, or gather them from the tables and sort them out. It wasn't a hard job, tedious at times, but not difficult. And Euthisa loved books. Carrying an armful of gathered readings, Euthisa began filing them away in their proper places.

It didn't take her long to do, and as she finished, a man she didn't recognize came up to ask her for help. She smiled warmly and greeted him in her professional manner. Just one look at him told her he wasn't from Wind Reach, and though "outsiders" weren't uncommon, she herself didn't run into them too often. Her mind was puzzled, wondering what he needed help with. He introduced himself as Syrin, explaining that he'd just arrived here and had a question on Inartan culture. She smiled at him, signaling that she was ready to help him and encouraging him to ask his question. It was an odd one indeed, something he mentioned himself, but nonetheless, she would answer like it were any other question.

"Hi Syrin. I'm Euthisa. It's nice to meet you. Welcome to Wind Reach. I hope you enjoy it here. I do have to admit your question is rather odd, but I'm no judge. Here inside the city, nearest the volcano, temperatures stay pretty hot most of the time. It's much cooler for the men to go shirtless and the women to wear midriff tops as we do, called Vinati. It doesn't bother us to all be like this because we're not shy about our bodies or others' bodies, or physical affection of any kind. Outside the city however, as you probably know, glaciers and cold temperatures are everywhere. Out there, yes we'll get cold, haha. But we have fur clothing made specifically for wearing out there to keep us warm. We Inarta live in extremes, but you get used to it with enough time."

"As for embracing the social norm, by all means, make yourself comfortable and join us. We're all like a big family, working along side each other as one to ensure our survival. However, if you don't feel as comfortable walking around bare chested as we do, no one will ridicule you for wearing a shirt. I hope this has helped. Is there anything else I can do for you? I hope you enjoy your stay and our customs."

OOCSorry it's not the best post ever. Never written this sort of thing with her yet so I'm winging it here, lol.

What you can't learn from books (Euthisa)

Postby Syrin on September 11th, 2012, 3:08 am

Syrin listens to Euthisa explanation of the Inartan custom, and he was satisfied with her answer. It straight to the point and factual unlike the explanation from the Inartan author. His answer sounded like something out of a epic poem. He decides to stay away from his questions about culture because he doesn't want to come off like a complete idiot in front of her. Feeling a bit awkward now, he decides to keep this conversation short. He smiles at her and continues the small talk, “Yes, I am enjoying my stay in your city a lot. The foreigner descriptions of Wind Reach doesn't do it any justice.” Tapping the book to his chin, he figures he will not waste anymore time and says, “Euthisa if you could do me a favor. Can you direct me to your section of books on magic? I looked everywhere in the library and I can't seem to find them anywhere.”

Syrin already picturing her reaction to his question. He figure Euthisa eyes will go wide and she'll figure out excuse to get away from him. This is the most typical way non magic user react to anyone who uses magic or even takes a interested in the arcane arts. However, Euthisa is a librarian, so she might get this question occasionally. On the other hand, Syrin was always told by his father and mother to keep his arcane knowledge a secret because most people on Mizahar hates or distrusts magic. Syrin waits for her response with a half grin, and he waits for her response.

What you can't learn from books (Euthisa)

Postby Euthisa on September 19th, 2012, 5:55 pm

Requesting to see the Magic section of the library? That was certainly a question Euthisa hadn't received in quite some time. Of course, it wasn't a new occurrence, someone wandered in wanting to know about magic from time to time, but it was usually far and few between. And the seeker was almost always an outsider. Not an Inartan. Euthisa herself had never dabbled in or researched magic, and she wasn't sure how she felt about it. Growing up, she was raised not to fear or hate magic, but she really didn't know anything about it. She was a neutral party, and she never judged anyone for seeking knowledge, no matter what it was about. "This way." She said with a kind smile.

She led Syrin to the back of the Enclave to a small section of books, dusty from lack of use. There books were housed on magic as well as its history and origins. There weren't many, but at least it was something. However, none of these books were written by Inartans. They'd been collected through trade or donation from travelers and outsiders coming to live in Wind Reach. "I'm afraid it's not a lot, but this is what we have and you're more than welcome to them. Sorry they're a little dusty, haha." She pulled out a random book to dust it off. "I'm going to go check on some of our other visitors today and then come back here to start cleaning these books. I'll be back in a few minutes if you need anything further. Make yourself comfortable."

OOCSorry it's not much. Trying to wing it here, lol.
