A talk in the spring's and things(valk)

Postby Coren on September 21st, 2012, 7:55 pm

Fall 4th

Coren pushed through the door, his all to common heavy cloak and facemask on that covered the majority of his body from other people's view. Most people would be quite surprised that he entered the strings and things shop. He wasn't really know as somebody intrested in any kind of art and had never given more then a passing intrest in music. Not enough to go and learn an instrument anyway.
What he would never say to others is that he wasn't here to learn how to create music instruments that could be used to create artworks. He wanted to learn how to create things with wood. And the only place he could think of that would accept him was the strings and things shop.

As he walked up towards the counter he let his gaze glide over the instruments displayed, trying to feign at least some interest in the musical art before he looked at the man behind the counter.
“Are you Parrsni by chance?” It hadn't been hard to find out the name of the person, just asking a bit around was enough to get to know that. “I have been looking for somebody who could teach me how to work with wood to create instruments” Coren tried to keep his voice normal to hide the lie he was telling, he wanted to work with wood alright, but not to create instruments.

Parrsni looked up as the masked man came forward. He raised an eyebrow and nodded when Coren asked if he was himself. His other eyebrow raised up as Coren explained why he was there. Parrsni wasn’t the sort of man to turn a person away but this visitor gave him cause for question. And he certainly didn’t have a problem asking questions.

“What’s with the mask?” Parrsni asked bluntly though his intention as not to be rude. A man wearing a mask was a bit of an oddity unless it was a well wrapped scarf.

“You aren’t from Snowsong, are you.” Parrsni’s words quickly followed the end of his question but this time he didn’t seem like he was asking something. He was making a statement. Parr was positive that he would have noticed a man who was partial to wearing masks around the Hold so clearly this man was not from the Hold. It wasn’t very often that someone from another Hold came down to his workshop at all, let alone to ask for training. While others might have seen this as a reason to disqualify a person Parr was not so firm on the norms.

“Its a safety blanket against social insecurity.” Coren deadpanned at parrsni's question, making it a bit hard to tell if his answer was a joke or completely serious. Parrsni wouldn't get any more clues out of him as he went on to answer his second question directly after. “No I didn't come from the snowsong hold. I am from skyglow.” he didn't mention he wasn't welcome there anymore after the rather recent fiasco, that might put his chance of being accepted for training in jeopardy. And he really wouldn't have a clue about where else he would get trained in how to work with wood if parrsni sent him away.
“I hope that isn't a big problem.”

Parrsni’s eyebrows stayed raised as Coren responded. Social insecurity? He wasn’t sure if Coren was just deflecting the question or being serious. No matter. He wouldn’t push. He did plenty of strange things in his youth when he was still trying to pretend like he was a full Vantha instead of accepting himself. Young men always did strange things when they were trying to find themselves.

“No, it isn’t a big problem. You just want some training right? I can allow that. The Hold Leaders get all upset when their workforce is employed by other Holds but I doubt anyone would be upset by learning a new hobby. Hobbies are good for you, especially when you are young and have so much energy. I remember when I was younger I used to fish off the docks with some Coolwaters.” Parrsni chortled briefly, as though he had made some sort of joke. Perhaps he had in his mind. He certainly had an odd sense of humor.

“Well I’ve got lots of work to do during the day but evenings are usually more free for personal projects. If you come during the evenings I should have some time for you or be able to assign one of the novices to teaching you a trick or two. What say you to that?” Parrsni asked with a small smile. He liked having new people around and couldn’t turn anyone away, no matter how busy he was.

Coren was content that the man didn't seem it necessary to continue to pry into the issue of the mask. “Yes, I'm not planning to make my job out what you teach me. Its just something to pass the time with. And carpentry looks like it could be a good way to spend the time doing nothing important while still having accomplished something.” Coren answered, not really getting what was funny about fishing with the coolwaters, then again parssni was know about his rather strange concept of humor.
When Parssni just continued on, telling him the times he was welcome here to come and practice coren gave a gratefull nod.
“Thanks for all this.” Coren said with genuine grattitude. Now there was only one thing left to clear up with them. How much he needed to pay him or the novices that where looking after him nothing was ever free in life. “How much do I owe you for the lessons though? You aren't getting any usefull work done out of the time I spend here and I do use up your wood and valuable time.”

“Nothing important? Well I don’t know about that. Lots of important things you can do with carving, time you spend learning it is time well used.” Parrsni said, a little gruff about Coren’s flippant manner towards his beloved work. He was beginning to rethink his decision to give the younger man lessons. Too late now, he supposed. He had already made the offer.

“Oh, let’s say 5 silver mizas a lesson? How does that sound to you?” he asked with a sigh. At least you he could get some money out of it for the shop. Replace the materials Coren used and perhaps have a couple coppers left over to put towards tool repairs. Tools always needed repairing, that was certain.

A talk in the spring's and things(valk)

“Oh I didn't mean carpentry and carving in general.” Coren quickly amended himself. “I just meant that hobbies or side projects are seen as something to amuse oneself with in the time where you don't have anything vitally important to do.” he tried to explain. “Not that carpentry or carving weren't important, without those avanthal wouldn't be what it is today.” Coren tried to amend the little understanding between the two of them, he really didn't want his teacher, or the guy that was going to be assigning his teachers to him to dislike him. To much ways he could ruin the education he was going to get, and he needed that knowledge for his projects in animation to succeed. And even though he wasn't lying about carpentry he didn't have much patience for carving, a lot of bad memories where connected to that art of his.

At the mention of the price coren just nodded.
“That sounds like a decent price.” Coren responded “But are you sure it covers both the materials I use and to cover the cost of a teacher. I really don't want to be a burned to this shop.” He was already dispised enough because he was a mage, something the man in front of him would probably find out quickly enough. Being accused of taking advantage of somebody elses charity while he had money, that would let everybody spit on his name. For good reason.

Parrsni nodded, mollified by Coren’s response. When he was young he had seen the creation of instruments as merely a hobby compared to actually playing them but that belief quickly changed as he found his true calling in shaping wood. Perhaps it would be the same for this young man, perhaps not. It was difficult to tell until he saw how well people tolerated working with wood. It was a much more time consuming and detailed job then they usually realized.

“5 silver mizas per lesson is plenty to cover the cost of your materials and the shop’s time. Unless you turn out to be a rather hopeless carver and we have to use more than the usual amount of materials. If that happens we can always renegotiate the price.” Parrsni said in jest with a small chuckle. “I’ll see you whenever you have a free evening then. There’s usually always someone here unless it’s the very dead of night. Welcome to the world of carving.”
