Excellent questions!
1. Do they only shrink once you decide what to do with them, or the moment they come of the branch? If the former, could you change a whole lot of them at once if you've harvested them and put them together, like just think "I want all of these to be like spools of thread" and have them all change? If the later, are they stuck with whatever random properties you were thinking of at the time, or just stuck as glowing beads?
The Stars shrink into the bead-like thing once they are 'harvested'. To havest one the PC must catch or otherwise grasp the Star with the purpose of taking it. The stars wont transform if they are just randomly bumped into or touched without the express purpose.
The stars keep whatever random property they are purposed with and they can be purposed in mass. Keep in mind that once purposed the stars will take on the properties of the raw substance used in the creation of what the player wants and cannot be changed back. So one would have to spin the stars into thread, the stars dont just fall into thread, or if one wanted to craft a statue out of them, the stars will take on a clay like substance to form or mold, or just stay rock hard. It really depends on what or how you want to use the stars, but they will provide, again, the raw material used to create whatever you want to make.
That being said, you will not be earning any kind of XP regarding crafting Ionus Stars. Instead you will get normal crafting XP, such as blacksmithing or carving, ect.
2. What's the approximate shape and size range for these things?
The stars themselves can be any impossible size or shape imaginable. Though no matter the size of the star itself it still falls into the same bead-like size of all the other stars harvested.
3. To harvest them do you just like pick them from the trees?
You can do that, or you can go star hunting, chasing them around the city. Keep in mind that the stars usually dont hold still when someone wants to harvest them.
4. Does the glow last if you leave Alvadas?
The glow lasts even when you leave Alvadas. Products of Ionus Stars, however, are rare outside Alvadas and can be sold for quite the price, especially if the buyer likes the color and glow of the object.
5. The beads themselves are the things that can be crushed or unwound or what have you, right?
Yep, the beads themselves which comes from harvesting the stars.
