24th of Fall, 512 A.V.
The Astronomy Tower
Eleven o'clock at night

Arianthe was sitting by one of the stargazers, her favourite stargazer, in fact. There was nothing which distinguished this stargazer particularly from any of the others, but the position and angle was perfect, needing minimal adjustment, and it had enough space next to it for her to place a small square table, on which she could put her books, ink, notes and a small lantern, by which she could see. At the present moment, she was poised to write, a quill in her hand, an eye stuck with interest to the telescope. She was making notes on the constellations, but the sheer beauty of the night sky she was seeing was sending chills down her spine. The vastness of the world, the vastness of the entities of gas and rock that sparkled like jewels... it made her feel uncommonly small and unimportant.

She straightened up after what felt like hours and looked around the empty observatory, unusually empty for the time of night, where it was popular with other students. Professor Tunsten was also normally here.

She turned back to her telescope, cleaning the lens, and realising that she had not taken any notes, bit her lip and started concentrating.

"X... one... three... North Star." she noted this down quickly, then went back to the basics of locating the constellations. It was interesting and eye-opening work but she was hit by a sense of acute sorrow and melancholy, only heightened by her loneliness. She had no one to share this with, and she had hardly ever seen such a beautiful spectacle, such a beautiful, clear sky... and the scent of nectar mixed with the freshness of the trees was in the air. Somewhere nearby in the city, somebody was playing the flute - a mysterious, sweet tune. A night like this didn't happen very often. She had never known one before.

With a sigh, Ariante turned away and, as she reached a hand to pull her hair back from her eyes, she knocked the telescope downwards. She cursed, put an eye to it, and was about to place it back to how it was when she noticed a strange figure. She had accidentally placed it to look directly at the eastern docks, and she focused it in directly to look closer.

"Oh my..." she murmured.

The docks were completely clear of people, apart from the sight of two large men, carrying what looked like a person between them. Arianthe couldn't tell if the person was dead or alive at this distance, but it was a thin figure.
Arianthe blinked, not sure what to do. She couldn't tell any of the identities in the darkness.

The Futility of shooting at the Stars

Postby Kaidan Arianos on October 5th, 2012, 11:13 am

It was late, and Kaidan was up late. He normally went to be around this time, but ever since he had been spending time with Zarius, he was staying up a bit later than usual. Laying in his bed now though, the dim candlelight shining through his dorm, Kaidan looked up towards the ceiling. Maybe I'll go to the observatory tonight, has to be a decent night for looking at the stars, he thought. Getting up, and dressing in his wine colored jacket, collared white shirt, black pants, and black shoes, he began to make his way out of the dormatories, and towards the observatory. Slowly opening the door to it, he began to make his way inside of it, until he noticed someone else was in there. "Oh... uh... excuse me!" he stammered if she happened to notice him standing there looking like a goof. He had thought it would have been empty that evening, but instead there was a girl looking through a telescope, pointed downwards? What was she looking at? He thought she'd have the telescope pointed upwards towards the stars if she happened to be looking at the stars that night, but perhaps she was utilizing the telescope to spy at people?

Kaidan didn't know, he just felt a bit embarrassed by barging in when she was using the facilities. "I... er... didn't think there would be anyone else in here this time of night," he said, a half frown upon his face as his soft brown eyes looked down towards the ground a bit, before returning their gaze towards her. "What are you looking at, if I might ask?" he then asked, his curiosity getting the better of him, knowing she obviously wasn't looking at the stars, but apparently was looking at something a bit different, something on the ground, or at least towards the ground...

"I didn't think there would be anyone else in here this time of night,"

Arianthe looked up with a start at the voice and, in the semi-darkness, she couldn't tell anything at first about the tall figure, until he stepped forwards. She smiled genuinely, but slightly awkwardly.

"Oh. It's alright. Truly."

She was about to turn back to the telescope, when she thought that she might tell the man about what she saw, only she didn't know how she could do that without it sounding strange.

"What are you looking at, if I might ask?"

So, he had fixed the difficulty for her, but still she couldn't explain exactly. Instead she simply stood up and indicated the chair.

"Have a look for yourself."

Kaidan nodded when she said to have a look for himself, and so he walked over, took a seat, and began to peer through the telescope to see exactly what it was that she happened to be looking towards. In seeing the two men, carrying someone else in between them, he pulled his head back away from the telescope, and turned around in the seat towards her, standing up, so that she could retake the seat if she so chose to, and said, "Interesting sight... my guess is the man between them got a bit too drunk, and needed a hand out of one of the local taverns... you know those sailor types, always getting completely smashed at this time of night..." As he spoke, he smiled, and then said, "By the way, my name is Kaidan, Kaidan Arianos... I'm here studying botany, but also have a keen interest in astronomy of sorts," he said looking towards the woman whom had just allowed him to see the interesting sight down by the docks.

Then as his soft brown eyes looked towards her, he asked politely, "What might your name be? And are you in the astronomy classes that they hold here?" He genuinely wondered whether she happened to be taking astronomy or not, and if she was, would she be willing to impart some of her knowledge of Mizahar's starry sky to him. If not, that was okay too, he did know the basics of astronomy and Mizahar's star systems, but he was always eager to learn more, wherever and whenever he could that is...

Arianthe accepted what he told her and laughed slightly. So, he studied Botany - that was intriguing. In the future, she would like turn her hand to that... especially as she devoted so much time to creating and studying perfumes. It would be nice to understand the flowers she crushed for their scents. Engrossed in her thoughts, as was so often the case, she almost missed his next question and she took a moment before answering.

"Arianthe Swansong." she smiled slightly, tucking a honey blonde curl behind her left ear "And I am in the astronomy classes, as well as Magical Theory. Do you only do Botany?"
