She was giving him the strangest look, eyebrows furrowed deeply, as if he was some sort of wooden kid’s puzzle.
"Wha- thas hell as goin un?" she garbled indignantly, slumped in her seat, head lolling. Zeke tried to explain while tilting her head back forward for her,
“Well, you....uh, frankly you’re drunk as a skunk, and you needed some air. Hence, we’re here making sure you don’t die." He turned further towards Blizah, perplexed and looking into her eyes with his shifting greenish gold ones, as if making sure she was still conscious.
“What on earth made you so intent on drinking so much? Have you ever even had a drink before?” He should have stopped her earlier, but she had looked so on edge that he figured it was her intention to get completely and totally rubbished. Now though, he wasn’t so sure.
She was swaying more now, making a weird, bubbling sound, and her face had turned a most unpleasant shade of chartreuse. Zeke, having consoled many a drunken sailor, immediately put his hand on the back of her head and slowly pushed it down and over the bench so that the alcohol could leave her body with due haste.
He awkwardly leaned over and gathered up the Kelvic’s hair, holding it away from her face so she didn’t get sick on it. The cobblestone was soon splattered with what appeared to be a half-digested steak and and some wayward chunks of asparagus. At this point it was clear that she would have a hard time mauling him, even if she wanted to. Besides, he couldn’t leave her alone like this. She could be taken advantage of in this state, and Zeke would not let that happen, even if he barely knew her.
A few of the wet cobblestones pried themselves from their settings and got up on little twig legs, shaking tiny fists at the offending Blizah and trying in vain to wipe themselves off, then stalking away in an odd assortment of angry, cat sick-covered pebbles. Zeke clucked irritably at the stones and sat up when the woman was done with the wretched affair. She leaned against the bench with her eyes closed and Zeke dabbed a bit of vomit from her chin with his coat. Then her eyes sprang to life again and she coughed horribly, snarling,
“It's Blivvard! BLI-!” She slumped again, a few little chokes and gags coming from her under the curtain of hair covering her face. She looked miserable, but at least he knew her name now.
“Oh, Blizzard, I see!” Zeke replied. He wasn’t sure if she was still lucid enough to explain anything further, but it was late in the evening and he had to get back to the inn, or Micah would have his head for sure.
“Can you tell me where you live, Blizzard? You need to get home and sleep this off.” He heard a rumbling above him and he looked up to see that once again, as they did most nights, the buildings began to switch around, and presumably the streets too. That would make it harder for her to remember. Bollocks.
Blizzard mumbled some more nonsense and looked up at the new buildings, hair falling back like drawn curtains, staring at their painted facades quizzically, as if she were trying to find reason in them and couldn’t. Then she slumped to the side, glassy-eyed. Maybe he should just drop her off at an inn? No, they wouldn’t be able to find an inn now that everything had switched, not for a while, and Zeke couldn’t support her weight for that long. He looked sturdy, but most of that was just pudge, and while he had plenty of pudge he wasn’t strong enough to guide the bonkers Kelvic any further than a block.
Maybe he would just wait here with her until she came around. He couldn’t just leave her alone. He poked her a few times as a test but she just tilted to whatever side. Eventually, as the autumn air got snappier, Zeke shrugged off his blue suede coat, draped it over Blizzard’s shoulders, and sat resolutely next to her, determined to wait until she was allright enough to be alone without tripping, accidentally impaling herself on a sharp object and bleeding out on the street.
Several minutes later, his head was hanging over the back of the bench and he was fast asleep, oblivious to the fact that there was a drunken and possibly violent Kelvic sitting right next to him. Zeke simply snored quietly, and every so often he twitched.
