Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Kavala watched Dust delighted. She leaned back slightly feeling relaxed for some reason in the kelvics presence. Things had been so tense lately, so strange, that to see something so beautiful and so normal like a playful raven just reminded Kavala that things were still right in the world. Hard times lead to peaceful times. It showed her, in small ways, that there was still hope. Sometimes, Kavala lost sight of that.

The Konti's face crinkled into a smile as the raven stalked her son. When she tickled Tasival, the boy squealed, back peddled and then tumbled to his rump. Tasi wasn't the most graceful of creatures. Shayru was better. But her son's darker personality didn't seem inclined to come out. Awkwardly, Tasi got on his hands and knees, retrieved a bite of fallen pear, stuffed it into his mouth, and started stalking the raven back, giggling. He babbled as he did so, in a mixture of Tukant and Pavi, with sometimes a word of common thrown in.

He didn't try to hurt Dust, instead he mimicked her walk - the strange bobbing gait and sometimes throwing in a sideways hop - and did everything she did down to a tilt of her head and opening his hands like wings. It was then Dust might notice Tasi had scales on his arms, spiraling upwards to gills set beneath his ears. And while his hair was super fine, it was a soft white like his mothers, not the dark of his father's race.

Kavala let the game go on interrupted. Tasi was just up from a nap, and the best thing for him was a bit of play. In fact, she was grateful to the kelvic. The Sanctuary's mistress was generally tired these days, her djed depleted.

She hadn't forgotten about Dust's question though. And she started talking as the two smaller forms played. Tasi never got truly close to Dust, but it was incredibly good fun for him to pretend to be Dust, mirroring her as his mother spoke.

"Iris lives there. She's a healer like myself, a Konti. My sister Akela used to also live there, but no one's seen her for a while. She was a Konti, but absolutely loved her sword. I've never seen a Konti more violent. I suspect she fell in the djed storm." Kavala said, describing each woman.

"Gianne and her bondmate Rhy live there. Gianne is human, young, and a riding instructor. Rhy is a kelvic dog. She's beautiful and funny. Everyone loves her because she says such straight to the point things. The two of them are often together. You can tell they share a great deal."
Kavala said, smiling softly as Tasi almost tripped again. Her son was not coordinated, but each time he didn't actually fall was like a big victory for him.

"We have two other healers. Serrif, who used to live in Mura. He's a human, very gentle, to tries to watch over us. Sometimes hes a little pompous, as if women can't do what men can. And I think he has a minor heart attack every time one of us picks up a weapon. But I chalk it up to his soft living on Mura." She said, laughing slightly. Serrif would take offense to hear himself described as such, but it was the truth. He did see the women as not as capable as the men when the truth was most of the women could hold their own in battle. "I think hes a little in love with Gianne and Rhy too." Kavala added.

Looking thoughtful, Kavala told Dust about Elem, whom Tasi liked and immediately began changing his name... "Elem Bree Elem Bree". Kavala laughed. "Elem gives Tasi candy when I'm not looking. He's totally won my sons heart with sugar." The konti said, chuckling. "Elem is a really shy man. He's a healer from Zeltiva as well. He came this way looking for something more in life. I hope hes found it here. We're building a college, you see... to train healers to help animals and not just people. Elem was so docile when he moved here, but hes changing now. He's learning weapons and coming out of his shell. I think humans call it finding himself." Kavala added, slipping down the list mentally.

"My brother also lives there. He's the arms master. There's not a more beautiful man inside and out than Vanator. But hes been so incredibly hurt. Zith captured him and hes suffered under them. He never talks about it, but I can tell. And when he finally won his freedom, he found our entire pavilion on the Sea of Grass had been destroyed. All his family, his wives, everyone gone. He's so quiet these days. He used to laugh a great deal. Now he only exists. I can see him healing, slowly bit by bit, but its so painful not to be able to hug him and kiss his cheek and make all his hurts go away." Kavala said.

"Then there's Aweston. He's our chief groom and stablemaster. He took my last name when his pavilion was destroyed in the storm as well. He's a good man, works hard, and seems content behind stone walls instead of tent walls these days."
Kavala said, describing each one of them physically too so if Dust saw them she'd known which one they were unless names slipped her mind.

Kavala kept talking. She seemed to enjoy speaking about her family. "My niece and nephew live there too. Cadra is a cat and an amazingly good cook. None of us quite know what we'd eat without her. Larik is an eagle, and hes fierce brooding and still recovering. I found them enslaved and bought their freedom with two seme mares." Kavala said, speaking of Cadra's easy laugh and her bright coppery hair. Larik looked different, being blonde, but he was still handsome even though he never smiled.

"I think you would like them." She added, even as Tasi did another half bow and mimicked Dusts opening and closing her mouth with his own.

[Sanctuary Beach] Sea Glass (Dust)

Postby Dust on November 3rd, 2012, 9:29 pm

The raven chortled as Tasival fell backwards, clearly delighted -- even smug -- at having scored a point of sorts. She cocked her head as he gathered himself up, blue eyes bright, then backed away from him as he approached. It didn't take her long to figure out he was mirroring everything she did, and that brought the game to a whole new level.

The follow-the-leader game went in circles around Kavala as she spoke, Dust making clear every now and again that she was paying attention to the Konti's words. With a sidelong glance, or a bob of her head which was an intended nod rather than in play -- even if Tasi did mimic it regardless. They ran on until Kavala finished her descriptions, the raven finally turning to face the boy, spreading her wings and ducking in a closing bow. She then fluttered up, describing a short arc over blanket and Konti alike to where she'd left her clothes behind. The Kelvic shifted back to human, grinning at the boy from where she knelt on the cotton. "That was fun! But you're going to have to teach me what you were saying sometime. I know some of the words, but I know very little Pavi," she said, that formula being one of the few complete and correct sentences Dust had in her lexicon. "The others didn't sound like the same kind at all!"

Dust slid off her knees and brought her feet around in front of her, knees raised and heels planted against the blanket. She leaned over and snatched up the apple, taking a bite from it before folding her arms over her knees. She turned her attention to Kavala, but took the time to chew and swallow the apple piece before speaking. "They all sound like neat people!" the Kelvic agreed. "And a lot of people. But I guess that's how fortresses should be." She sat back and continued to eat on the apple, looking out towards the waves but with her attention turned inward, reflecting on all those people Kavala had described. Konti and humans and Drykas and Kelvics... "I think you have more Kelvics at your fortress than I've met in one place anywhere this side of The Spires," she remarked. Dust turned and looked up towards the rocks, where said fortress lay. "I will have to see!"

Kavala smiled. "The best way to speak Pavi is to learn what all items are in Pavi. Then you need to learn the handsigns, which are important too. I'd be glad to help you." Kavala said. She laughed at Tasival and was glad at that particular moment it was Tasi and not Shayru that wanted to play with the Raven.

"I'm about to pack up and head back home. Would you like to join us? You can look around and maybe give some advice on a mews I'm planning on having my brother help build here in the near future. We have some falcon, owl, hawk, and eagle eggs we hatched out that we saved from the djed storm. Once the birds are older they are going to make a foundation stock for our mews. Your advice would be very welcome indeed."
Kavala said, figuring who better to know what a bird would like than a bird? It was a bonus that this one could walk and talk and seemed highly intelligent.

"Riverfall has a lot of kelvics in the city. I suspect its because they welcome them as bondmates. Kelvics, unlike humans, have no trouble having Akalak children. For some reason they have problems reproducing and need these offspring badly. So while your kind is universally welcome, if you are female, beware bonding with one of them if you don't like children." Kavala gently warned, already knowing that the kelvic woman did like children. Tasi was all over her and already chanting her name. He repeated it in fact in Tukant and Pavi, making up his own little song dedicated to Dust.

With that, Kavala bent and started picking things up, folding the blanket, and settling everything into a leather bag. She shouldered the bag, took Tasival's hand, and smiled at Dust. "Ready? We can cut through the Sea Cave doors and go up that way, saving ourselves a climb back up the hill." She said, gesturing down the beach to a set of large double doors hewn into the stone cliff.

[Sanctuary Beach] Sea Glass (Dust)

Postby Dust on November 14th, 2012, 1:12 am

Dust bobbed her head at Kavala, for all that she was human-form, as the woman offered to help her learn Pavi. "I like words," she asserted, not that it was particularly necessary to say given her obvious interest in languages. She listened to the Konti's remarks about mews and foundation stocks with interest tempered by a touch of uncertainty; the Kelvic understood she was being asked to help with something but didn't quite follow what. Any question she might have asked, however, was entirely derailed by Tasival's chanting song and the broad grin it inspired.

Dust giggled at the boy, then looked to Kavala as the Konti continued speaking. Akalaks. Children. She considered this information, a slight frown creasing her brow. Dust was female. She liked children -- at least to play with -- but... chicks of her own? ...Maybe not quite yet. "I'll remember that," she assured the woman, nodding firmly.

As Kavala started packing things up, the Kelvic was reminded of her own clothes, which she stood up and put back on. Just as she was straightening the shirt, Dust paused, making the mental leap from one set of possessions to another, looking back along the coastline towards the city. Clothes. Pack. Her hat. It would be bad to lose that now, after keeping it so long. It was one thing to explore and leave it behind, but she liked these people, and Kavala promised to teach her things. That made for a different perch entirely, something like joining up with a caravan. And she never left the hat when she headed out in one of those.

"I want to go get my pack first," Dust informed Kavala. A human who said that would likely be dissembling, the better to avoid going along with the Konti, but for the Kelvic it was the sincere and unvarnished truth. "Or at least my hat. The rest doesn't really matter, it's just stuff." Including the pieces of glass she had scooped up from the sand and now held, but those were different -- those were still new stuff. "I'll come back with that!"

[Sanctuary Beach] Sea Glass (Dust)

"We'll walk with you. The extra energy he'll burn off will make it worth it." Kavala said, starting off down the beach with Tasival in tow. The little boy yawned but seemed to get into the fact they were walking AGAIN as they trailed Dust down the beach. Kavala helped him along by letting him swing from her right arm, and she'd occasionally quote poetry.

"To walk along the beach,
The sun against your face,
Feels every bit as sweet,
As the warmth of an embrace."

Then she swooped down, hugged Tasi, and tickled his nose before continuing on, wandering in the same direction Dust was hurrying, but not in a hurry at all.
Life, Kavala had found, was too short to be overly worried about time unless there was a reason to be. Time came and went as Tanroa willed it and the mortals of the world could do very little to change that.

Tasival let go of Kavala's hand and stooped, picked up a shell, and showed it to her before throwing it out to see. His personality melted then, shifting, and Kavala could see her son's dark brother - Kavala's other son - emerge. She smiled at Shayru, stooped and hugged him again, though for this boy she ruffled his hair roughly and let him shove her a bit, playfully as they mock wrestled for a moment.

Kavala then continued walking, not offering to take Shayru's hand, because the boy was independent and about as unneedful as her other son was needy. She quoted another poem in pavi.

"Here about the beach I wandered,
Nourishing a youth sublime,
With the fairy tales of science,
and the long result of Time."

She quoted more poetry, this time making it almost as if it were a song. The konti loved singing, but it was rare there was a song suited for the moment. And though the Konti songs she'd heard were nothing she could remember, Kavala knew pavi tunes incredibly well.

"Sea glass on the beach
Captured by the waves and brought right to my feet
As I look through it,
The sea glass reflects all I've ever wanted to see

We are all here for the same purpose,
though no one knows it

The warmth of the sand on my feet
matches the fire that wallows up inside me

A loud laugh here
A whiff of salt there
Ice cream on his tongue

Summer.

The worries of life are washed away with the waves
The love that comes from pure freedom abounds
And joy is no longer frowned upon as a luxury,
but a reality

Your wide smile is no longer out of place in the world,
But you are now accepted here.
No loneliness
Nothing but giggles and carefree smiles
are found here at the beach

Summer.

An entry point for different people, changing times.
But peace covers who ever cares to come.

Old feuds forgotten
Arguments turned into laughter
Limbs entwined
Hot breath mingling together
Hands mixed with strands of hair
Eyes reflecting the flaming fireworks
Lips tasting of salt water

The beads of sweat running down our back.
Perspiration soaked shirts.
Sticky skin.
Blistered feet.
Colors so vivid they hurt the eyes.
Skin so scorched it burns a brilliant red

Endless skies
Clear oceans
Pure intentions
Overwhelming love

Summer.

An orange Sunrise bursts on the open water
New Beginnings

Not a cloud in sight
The Sun high in the sky signals an intense feeling of
Immortality...everlasting days.

Purple hues capture the sun and pull it back to the sea
A sadness surfaces with the realization that our momentary escape is fading with the light.
Dusk arrives and the air of completion is final
We struggle to say all we put off saying during the day

Summer.

Frantic kisses are stolen
As if we are all trying to find another way to breathe
The threat of tomorrow hangs over our heads
We embrace and hold each other tightly, trying to preserve the moment
Don't end, oh beautiful day

Twilight has come. But love still remains.

Summer's joy is infectious
And as life begins again
Worries resume
Sea salt dries
And is washed away with the sand

But that breathtaking exhilaration sleeps inside us all
Waiting for the day where it can awaken again

Summer."

Kavala finished the song and looked thoughtful, trying to remember who she'd heard it from first. Her Drykas people didn't often sing about the sea, but once a long time ago they had dwelled by it on the eastern shore. And from that time songs remained. Carefully, mother and son, with son looking decidedly bored now, waited while Dust retrieved her pack, and especially her hat.

[Sanctuary Beach] Sea Glass (Dust)

Postby Dust on November 17th, 2012, 10:02 pm

Dust led the way down the beach, half-skipping as she went, watching the sand-sprays kicked up by her feet, listening to the Konti's voice and the little boy's laughter carried on the sea breeze. She turned around and walked backward as Kavala began reciting poetry, head tipping as she considered the spare, elegant lines. Most of the words eluded her, but the rhythm and measure of it was intriguing. Maybe something else she'd have to learn about, sometime.

For now, the Kelvic kept her focus on what she'd come to do -- retrieve things. She came up by a boulder, isolated from the main cliff as though it might have separated some long time ago, one Dust recognized from earlier that day; then she cut across the sand towards the stone wall itself. She had wrapped hat and pack in her cloak and lodged it up on the rocks, where there was no chance of the water reaching them -- not without worse weather than seemed in store for this day.

Pulling the bundle down, she unwrapped the cloak only to ball it up and stuff it into the top of the pack -- along with the glass pieces. Dust shouldered the pack and snatched up the hat, straightening out its shape -- such shape as the old and well-used hat had left -- before plunking it down on her head. Its wide brim flopped a bit in the steady breeze. "Okay!" she declared, padding back over to rejoin her companions. "I'm done now.

"Was that a Drykas song?" the Kelvic asked. "It didn't quite sound like other songs I've heard..."

OOCI think you can wrap with the next, if you concur?
