Outside the Infirmary, the night had swallowed everything, yet Addy walked towards the door as if she had a purpose, one she remembered between one step and the next; one moment, the little woman trudged dazedly towards the exit while the next found her bounding forwards out into the night. When Sira managed to grab hold of her arm, Addy didn’t even seem to notice until she was jerked up short, a yelp piercing the relative silence as some unseen wound on her shoulder began to throb painfully after the sudden movement.
Stopped in her tracks, Addy slowly turned her head until she gazed down at Sira’s hand on her arm, as if confused as to why it was there, or why it had stopped her. A few experimental tugs were given, the little woman pulling her arm forwards and upwards, watching as Sira’s arm followed along with childlike fascination. An experimental finger was poked into the soft skin between thumb and forefinger, prodding until Sira spoke.
Nearly jumping out of her skin, Addy flinched violently away, yanking her arm from Sira’s grasp with another pained yelp, her green eyes wild as they flitted around the dimly lit room for a moment before finally resting upon Sira’s face. A slight recognition sparked in her gaze, her eyes narrowing after a few ticks as if she suspected fowl play. “There is nothing wrong with me. Can I help you?” Well, she recognized her name still, even if she had forgotten her lover in the time it took to walk from her sickbed to the door. “What right do you have to stop me?” The curious tilt of her head abruptly straightened as Addy squared her shoulders and puffed out her chest into what would have been a magnificent Endal-like expression… that is, if it had been anyone but Addy. Instead, the posture looked like the poor imitation a child would do of an Adult who crossed them, making silly faces and gestures when they turned their back. The healer had stuck her nose into the air, her hands resting imperiously (or so she thought ) on her hips, on bare foot tapping an out of beat staccato on the stone floor.
“Ah, Keah.” At the beginning of Addy’s strange behavior, the other healer had stepped forward into the line of sight, a concerned expression to mirror Sira’s wrinkling her brow. Seeing the other healer had apparently distracted Addy from whatever purpose she thought she had outside. “I could use some tea. It’s rather chilly. Would you mind? I think I’ll just sit here and wait.” A polite smile and a nod was given as the little woman leaned around Sira’s frame, pointing to a chair behind her to indicate where she would be before she sank quickly down. Once there, she sagged to one side and crossed her arms on the back of the adjacent chair, laying her head down on top with an almost inaudible moan. When Keah approached with the tea, Addy didn’t give any indication that she noticed until the healer gently shook her shoulder, murmuring a concerned “Addy?”
There was a flash of motion and Addy was sitting bolt upright, her green eyes still wide and wild, flying from one side of the room to the other for a few moments as if she, once again, had no idea where she was. She spotted Sira by the door and relief washed across her face as she put a hand to her rapidly beating heart. “Oh, thank god Sira. You’re here. I was so worried.” Though she seemed to recognize her lover now, something was still off. Turning back to Keah, Addy gave a small apologetic smile and took the tea between both her hands, rising to move to Sira’s side. “You saved us, then? Is Aela okay?” With no indication that anything was wrong or that she seemed to have gone completely crazy, Addy took a hearty sip of tea and sighed contentedly, wincing only when the action made the wound on her head throb painfully. It was then that Aela called out, Sira and Keah earning a confused glare from the little healer. “You haven’t looked after her yet?!” Setting her cup down on a nearby shelf with a little more force than necessary, Addy took off back into the sickbay and rushed to Aela’s side, muttering angrily as she went.
“Shh, Shh. Lay down. Let me look.” Gentle hands guided Aela back onto the bed, laying her flat as Addy pulled away the linens that covered most of her body. The wounds that were revealed ad been carefully cleaned but not even the deepest one across her chest was still open to the air. Hissing in sympathy for the younger woman, Addy immediately went into healer mode, moving to the wash basin in the corner and carefully scrubbing her hands with the porous soap there.
“I can’t believe you would just leave these wounds open like this.” Casting another glance over to where Sira and Keah stood, Addy took no note of their expressions as she shook her head and turned back to the now soapy water. Drying her hands with a clean cloth, Addy grabbed a needle and thread and quickly resumed her seat next to Aela, holding up the stitching implements so that she could see them. “This is going to hurt. Do you want something to dull the pain?”
Waiting for Aela to reply, Addy wobbled on the stool a little bit, but the tiny woman didn’t even seem to notice. Stitching up he friend was a terrible idea, and yet the injured healer carried herself with the confidence of any other day at work.
