The ground shook with the weight of the glassbeak’s footsteps and the hunter looked for an opening. Anything that could serve as an escape. The creature was almost upon him when the shadow cut the air next to its head, and it snapped in alarm and jerked its head away, giving the hunter the opening he needed. He dashed under its hulking body, took a leap, and then very neatly landed on one of its toes.
The glassbeak screeched in pain, and he spun on his heel to face it again as an idea took hold. If he could remain close and crowd it, his smaller figure might be able to evade the half-blind attacks that the massive bird would throw.
Moving to a point next to the bird’s chest, he took hold of his pheasant’s legs and gave the creature’s face as mighty a thwack as he could manage. When the thing turned in anger, he turned with it, darting to keep his place at its shoulder. When it took a step he would compensate, hitting it with the corpse and kicking its ankles whenever he got a chance.
