A Song For Him :
Fall 53rd, 510 AV

A bitter cold set over Avanthal for Wisteria. Sure, the city of ice was always cold, but this was a new sensation. This was an internal cold that numbed her soul and weighed heavy on her shoulders; a cold that could not be experience except through the pain of love and loss. Tears streaked down her alabaster skin and cascaded to the ice and snow below. With slow and fluid movements, she raised her flute to her lips, the cold metal biting in protest, and began to play, and while her music did draw a crowd, though nowhere near the throng a practiced bard was able to summon, that day by the Icewall Gates, she did not play for them, she played for Isen Frostspear; for the memory of their love, and the life they never knew.

From the instument she weaved a song of horrible beauty. Never before and never since had she played such a masterful song. Her notes were sharp and piercing, and her tune was haunting and elegant. She shaped her love and pain into a song, and let it twist through the air. Without words it began to tell a story of youth, a story of love, and a story of loss.

Spring 3rd, 507 AV

Three summers ago, Wisteria had been playing her flute in the same exact spot. Right by the Icewall Gates, welcoming the travellers and Icewatch with her music. She played for a good portion of the morning and afternoon, but didn't draw much of a crowd. Sure she recieved a few happy glances, and even a few mizas for her performance; however, there was one boy that stayed. He had been following a detail of Icewatch guards, but stopped dead when he say her and heard her music. He stayed until she finished playing, but was gone before she was able to get his name. With a little disappointment, she packed up her flute and the few mizas she earned, and headed home.

The next day at the same time, she went to the Icewall Gates to play for the travellers and guards once more. Once again, the same boy stopped and watched her, and just like before, disappeared once she finished her last note. Miffed, she once more packed up, and went home. Though this time, she had a plan for the next day.

Once again, she went to the Icewall Gates, but this time, instead of playing her flute, she began to sing. She sang a song about her hold, the Snowsong Hold. She sang of the history and the future of the hold. She sang her heart out, and this time, drew a bit more of a crowd; however, this time she sang for him. She never let him out of her sight, for she needed to know him, this boy who saw her each day, but it wasn't to be. For once she sang her last bar, he was gone again. She went home upset, and decided that it was useless. The next day came and went, but she did not go to the gates. Another day of disappointment would only lead to heart break. For three days she stayed away from the gates, refusing to play or sing. This wasn't to last, for on the third day, Wisteria recieved a knock on her door.

"May I help yo-" She was stopped in her tracks by the sight of her mystery boy. He stood there, dressed in Icewatch armor, clutching a single flower. She was speechless. After all, what was there to say? There was a heat rising to her cheeks as he began to speak.

"I-uh...I noticed you weren't at the Gates the last few days...I thought..you may have been ill. So I wanted to come wish you well..." He fumbled to find the words. Wisteria smiled, the boy was by no means eloquent, but he was sincere.

"Wisteria Snowsong. Please, tell me your name. For days I've needed to know." She asked. Trying to not sound desperate or nerveous.

"Isen Frostspear. I'm a new recruit for the Icewatch." He said almost too quickly, as though it had been rehearsed. It made the girl laugh.

"Well, Isen Frostspear, I assure you I am feeling fine, and I thank you for your well wishes, but I have some chores to attend to so if you don't min-"

"Will I see you tomorrow?"

"Excuse me?" Wisteria's eyes widened. It was unexpected and sweet, but...

"I mean, are you going to be by the Gates? I really enjoy your music." He smiled, and she melted. In the city of ice and cold, this boy's smile was hotter than her burning hearth. She nodded and promised she would be. Again he smiled, and began to walk away, but not before realizing he was still holding the flower and giving it to her. She smiled and closed the door, that night, the name Isen Frostspear was the last thing she thought of before sleep took her.

The song continued into the night, illustrating to the sleeping city the emotions and wonders she felt because of that boy. The happiness his smile gave her, and the joy his voice sparked. Her heart ached, and it was painful for her to play, but she continued on. Vantha are a hearty people, and they can endure any cold. She would endure this.

So absorbed in the playing and her music, she did not see the hooded man enter through the gates. He walked over to her, and stopped, listening to her tune. Slowly, he removed from his cloak a strange instrument, and began to play along side Wisteria. He weaved a beautiful melody that intertwined with the song of the flute and created a perfect harmony.

The duo played on, and the song became light and happy, with the underlying pain of that timeless cliche: all good things must come to an end.

Spring 10th, 509 AV

Wisteria and Isen had been together for almost 2 years. They were inseperable, and when Isen was forced away from his love due to his Icewatch duties, she would be waiting for him at the Icewall Gate with a song.

One day, when Isen came home, it was with a grim demeanor. A group of vagabonds had been trying to get into the city, and they posed a threat to the peace of Avanthal. Wisteria did not understand, what did this mean to her and her beloved.

Isen was leaving.

His detail of Icewatch was being sent out to hunt down these vagabonds and bring them to justice for threatening the peace of Avanthal. Isen was to depart at the end of the season, and would be gone for a unknown amount of time. To make sure he was prepared to leave, he was given several days off to gather his equipment and get his affairs in order; however, all his time was spent with Wisteria and her music.

Finally, the day came. Wisteria walked Isen to the gate, playing her flute as the group of Icewatch left the city. After that, she arrived at the gates everyday, and played a song for the Icewatch. When she was asked why, she simply explained, "To keep them safe, where ever they may be."

For seasons she did this, even when the weather was almost unbearable, her song being drowned out by the roar of the wind. Still she played, despite the wind, the ice, and the cold.

She played until she collapsed from exhaustion.

Fall 54th, 510 AV

The sun was rising over Avanthal, and its warm light fell upon the duo. The mysterious man and Wisteria continued to play. Her tears flowed freely now, and her lip quivered, but she played on. Her eyes were closed tight aginst the pain, and he heart pounded in her chest, pleading her to stop, but still she played on.

Her music grew dark, cold, and bitter. The finale drew close, and the story was almost over. Her flute sang of the single Icewatch Guard that showed up at her house. It sang of the helplessness she felt knowing her love would never return. It told of the memorial service held in the name of those that would never return. Finally, it testified to her everlasting love her Isen, and the song ended.

Wisteria sank to her knees in the snow, and began to sob. She cried over broken promises, and songs that ended long ago. She cried for herself, and for the loss of Isen. She cried for what seemed like ages, until a warm, and soft hand rested on her shoulder.

Whiping away her tears, she looked into the mustachioed face of an old man. Without a word, he helped her to her feet, and pressed her flute back into her hands. There was a depth to his eyes. A wisdom not known by the young Vantha. Suddenly, in the deep and dark chill of her heart, there was a flicker of warmth. The old man smiled, and then spoke slowly, but with force.

"There is no greater good in this world than love, but alas, there is no greater evil than a young love snuffed out before it could come to full bloom." Pain welled up within the girl, as tears began to form once more. "Cry no more, lass. An old man's heart cannot bear the sadness, but instead play! Move the peoples of this world with your music, and show them love! Show them purity and kindness, show them love and passion."

Wisteria looked quizzically at the strange man. "How can I do this? I am just a silly girl with a flute and a broken heart..."

"Nothing is impossible, not with the...proper gifts." There was a flash in his eyes, and a knowing smile. He took Wisteria's hand, and deftly kissed it. A sudden warmth spread through her fingers and across her neck. "You music has the ability to move those who hear it, and warm even the coldest soul."

Wisteria's eyes widened. "Rhaus?" She whispered. The old man smiled, neither confirming nor dening her claim. Instead, he hefted his stringed instrument, and smiled.

"Lass, we can't leave the city with such a sad song drifting in the air. So how about another duet? This time...something happy." He winked.

Wisteria's eyes clouded with tears, though not the bitter tears that stained her cheeks. These were sweet tears, filled with joy and hope. With a nod, she lifted the flute to her lips once more, and began to play again. Rhaus, the god of music, accompanied her, and together, the duo greeted Avanthal with a melody that hung in the air the entire day.
