The use of ranged weapons (Erekez)

Postby Laioath on January 20th, 2013, 4:27 am

17th day of winter, 512 AV

After thinking deeply in his cottage, Laioath thinks he needs a more physical defence, that didn’t involve his glyph inscribed dolls. The only ‘proper’ weapon he has is a tiny knife, which is about half the size of his forearm. Although it’s a weapon, Laioath uses it as a tool. He uses it to sharpen the nibs of his quills, and to whittle away mindlessly at a blocks of wood. Since the knife is his only non-magical defence, he’s extremely vulnerable if he’s ill prepared for a situation. So he decided to go shopping for a new weapon, a bow and arrow.

As Laioath exits his house, he looks up at the sky. The sky was slightly cloudy, but the blue in the sky remains dominate. “No chance for rain today. Right, Earnis” He says to his human-like companion. He closes the door, and locks it before turning around and advancing towards the market area of Zeltiva. Along the way, he thought to himself how much a bow would cost. He pictures all of the people so far he’s seen with bows, he could see many. “Maybe it cost around about ten gold miza?” he thought aloud. He’s not willing to spend a lot because he’s a little strapped for cash. He wonders if arrows would be thrown in if he bought the bow. He continues walking, deep in thought, to the markets.

Arriving at the markets, Laioath looks around for a cheap shop, a shop that sold a wide variety of items and equipment. Looking left and right, searching for a shop, he finds nothing but food and clothing stores. Laioath rarely goes to the market new equipment, normally he’d to purchase food and restock items such as parchment, ink and occasion quills. Laioath found a store that met his criteria, the general store. The store carried a variety of items and gear, and the items within look cheap. Laioath walks into the store, but oddly enough no one was in.

Since no one was in, he decides to look around for a bow. Looking around I immediately spots a composite bow mounted on the wall. He walks towards the bow in awe. A Man walks into the room, entering from a doorway behind the counter. He spots Laioath looking at the bow. “Seventy-five gold miza, and to can take it” the man said, startling Laioath. Laioath looks at the man for a moment, then back at the bow.
“Seventy five, that’s a bit much for a bow?” Laioath said.
“That’s a composite bow, and a well-made one. The price is fair. If you want a cheaper bow, I have one at the back for thirty gold miza, are you interesting in it?”
“Thirty?! That’s a far out of my spending range… I can only spend ten gold miza on a distance weapon.” Laioath said with disappointment.

The man furrows his brows, thinking what he has in his store for ten gold miza. The man soon exhales as if he thought of something. He ducks under the counter. Laioath listens to the rummaging from where he stood. The man stands back up from the counter holding ten daggers in his arms.
“Take a look at these. These are throwing daggers, lighter that ordinary ones so they can be thrown with ease. They’re one gold miza each.” The man says as he lines up the daggers along the counter.
Laioath walks to the counter to get a better look. He looks at the dagger, and then picks one up. It’s true, it is light. The dagger weighed as much as a medium block of wood. The daggers are sharp, and somewhat thin. Laioath’s mind automatically made his decision.
“I’ll take it” Laioath says, handing the coins over the coins.
As he leaves the store, the man gives him directions to try out the new weapons.

Following the directions of the man, Laioath found himself at an opened area. There were a small amount of trees there. Pulling the daggers from his bag, he adopts a combat position. He attempts to hold the dagger in a throwing grip, but isn’t too sure how. He fist hold the dagger but the handle, pinching it with his thumb and index. He aims at a tree, curving his arm back. He throws the knife with tremendous amounts of force, but the dagger stabs into the ground a few feet ahead of him. Laioath drops his head in disappointment, and walks toward the dagger of failure. He picks it up and continues throwing, changes his grip each throw.

The use of ranged weapons (Erekez)

Postby Erekez on January 20th, 2013, 1:16 pm

Moonraker gently trod through the vegetation that crept out over the floor, occasionally inspecting a nearby shrub or low-hanging branch. The trees were beginning to become sparse, and more sunlight shone over Moonraker. The shimmering effect that danced across her skin was similar to that of a calm ocean on a cloudless day. It was always a sight to see, and Erekez never got tired of it. The shimmering always calmed him. The city didn't help, it was why Erekez preferred to travel. He couldn't stay in a densely populated area, surrounded by bricks and stone, for extended periods of time. He much preferred towns, or somewhere close to the forest. The Spires were a must visit for him, but he had come to Zeltiva for a reason. Cities provided a lot of things that you just couldn't find anywhere else.

Erekez felt Moonraker stop. It was unusual for her to do so with a command to, but Erekez soon heard the possible reason behind her actions. A grunt, shortly followed by something hitting the ground, or a nearby tree. From the way it hit the trees, it sounded metallic, as the clang could be heard. If the object was metallic, it was safe to assume it was a weapon of sorts. Better to take that assumption and proved wrong than the opposite.

Unstrapping his composite bow from the saddle, Erekez dismounted. "No jokes for a while Moon, understood?" She just snorted at him, possibly because she'd been planning one, but she knew a time and a place, he hoped. "Stay here." Pulling an arrow from his quiver and nocking it in his bow, Erekez moved forward, timing his steps with the grunts as he got closer.

Hiding behind a tree, Erkez peered around it, pulling back on his arrow slightly, hoping to get a look of whoever was in the other side. It was a boy, around his age, and it seemed that he was practising throwing daggers. Erekez slowly released the tension on his bow, but not removing the arrow. He watched the boy, hoping to learn what he could about him. From the look of disappointment on his face, it was obvious he wasn't getting anywhere. And no wonder, his technique implied that he hadn't been throwing daggers for very long and they way he was doing it was just making it more difficult for himself. He kept changing his grip on the dagger, stopping him from getting a feel on if it was a bad throw or bad grip. He threw as if throwing a rock and, although there wasn't anything wrong with his side-on stance, the doll on his back wasn't going to help his technique. He'd need to learn to throw first before learning how to throw whilst accommodating for any equipment.

Erekez doubted that the boy was of any threat to in his current position, but that didn't stop him from being cautious. The boy continued to work hard with the daggers, betraying a sense that he needed to learn how to use them, possibly so he could do something that he felt he must do. Erekez learnt so he could survive. This boy seemed to be doing it for himself, but for different reasons other than survival.

Erekez knew little about making daggers specifically fly, but he knew what was required so that an object could fly. If this boy was serious about wanting to learn how to use his daggers, then he wouldn't be a threat. If not, it was unlikely that Erekez would miss at this distance if he was hostile.

Approaching slowly, still with his bow ready, Erekez called out to him. "If you want to learn, I can help you, my friend."

The boy quickly turned to him. Erekez waited for his reaction.

The use of ranged weapons (Erekez)

Postby Laioath on January 21st, 2013, 12:14 pm

Laioath throws the daggers one after another, picking them up after his ammunition was exhausted. He was obviously going nowhere with this. He didn’t feel comfortable with any of the grips. As Laioath retrieves his dagger, and prepares to throw them once again, a voice calls out to Laioath. He pinpoints the voice immediately, it was a boy. The boy stood behind a tree, calling out to Laioath to aid him in is training. The boy from a distance looks like he has brown hair, a somewhat slender build and carried a bow and arrow in his hands, ready to be fired. The clothing he wore looked as if he’s been traveling, and had some encounters. Laioath stood there with his hands by his sides, staring at the stranger.

“Lower your bow!” he shouted, his voice could travel to the boy.
“You can if you want to, I could use any help I can get!”
“But don’t try anything, or I’ll explode you!” He added, just as a precaution.
Laioath wonders if the stranger was an expert, and could hit a leaf with an arrow, as it falls. Maybe even he was some master, seeking a new disciple to study under them. Laioath’s imagination took over he was in a world of his own now.

Laioath waited for the boy to come down. As he waited, he thought of a few questions to ask as soon as the boy is near. The first question thought of is “What’s your name?” the second is “where do you come do you come from?” and the third was “are you good at distance combat?” these are the questions he’ll ask as soon as he gets here.

OOCsorry that it's short. I couldn't think of a better intro for our characters

The use of ranged weapons (Erekez)

Postby Erekez on January 22nd, 2013, 1:01 am

Explode me? So he knows magic. It was never good to underestimate an opponent. One careless mistake could be the difference between you or him in a fight. That bit of information justified being cautious when approaching. That wasn't to say that he didn't have other skills that made him dangerous. Erekez remained ready.

Lowering his bow, he called back at the boy's request. "I shall lower it, but I hope you can understand why I am not going to put it away after that threat." Erekez glanced at his surroundings. Was the boy alone? Or was this an ambush of sorts? He didn't like his chances against numbers. He thought of a way out of the situation, should that be the case. It could be that he was over-thinking the situation, but he wasn't going to take the risk, not this far from others.

As he approached, the boy asked numerous questions of him. Erekez smiled. The boy was trying to learn what he could about Erekez, he was smart. After all, a stranger appears from nowhere, bow and arrow in hand, offering his help? That would cause suspicions in anyone. Why would a stranger just offer help? Why the need for the weapon? Each question revealed an answer that could potentially save your life. Provided your source was telling the truth at the time. It's why Erekez always preferred to get his answers when people didn't know he was there.

"I think a name for a name is a fair trade. I am Erekez." He introduced himself, inclining his head towards the dagger thrower before him. "I'm currently in Zeltiva for personal reasons, possibly for the rest of the season." He briefly glanced at the daggers he held. "As for distance combat? I have no training in dagger throwing, but do understand what is required to make a projectile fly with lethality. The basics are the same for all projectiles, it's just adapting the method. I should be able to help."

Erekez knew what to look out for. Hopefully he could help this one, provided there wasn't any danger whilst doing so. He raised his hand from his bowstring and brought it to his lips. He whistled, calling Moonraker to his position. She would help in an escape, if things took a turn here.

"As it seems, neither of us trusts the other at this point, so calling for a ceasefire is pointless. Instead, I'll offer you this." Moonraker pulled up alongside him as he spoke. Erekez removed his arrow and placed it back in his quiver. Never letting his gaze off the boy for long, he continued his offer whilst he mounted Moonraker. "To show I mean no harm, I'll put my quiver to one side. A bow is no use without an arrow. Similarly, you must lay any of your weapons to one side, away from me so you can rest assured that I won't make a move for them. You are only allowed to keep your daggers, as they are the reason for my help."

Moonraker trotted over to a nearby tree, allowing Erekez to throw his quiver next to it. Turning back around, he addressed the boy once more. "I only have two questions now. What is it I should call you my friend? And do you agree to my terms?"

Erekez placed his bow back on the saddle, although not securing it. He placed the arrow he had pulled from his quiver in a concealed pocket within his cloak. He only intended on using it if the boy gave him a reason to. Besides, he could not fully believe that the boy would agree to his terms without keeping a small, discrete weapon of sorts on himself. As long as he did not use it, there was no problem.

OOCDon't worry about the length of it. Sometimes they are long, others they are short. As long as the quality is good, I'm not bothered how long they are.

The use of ranged weapons (Erekez)

Postby Laioath on January 22nd, 2013, 3:01 am

The boy answered all of Laioath question, each answer was answered truthfully. “So your name is Erekez?” he said, memorising it. I’m lucky, I thought I’d be stuck out here all day getting nowhere, he thought in his mind.

Erekez raises his hand, and lets out a whistle. This confused Laioath slightly, and then realizes a horse coming toward Erekez. Laioath stares at the horse. Is that his horse? He thought to himself. Erekez soon explains to that a ceasefire should be called, and that he’ll offer something to show his sincerity. The boy removes his quiver full of arrows, placing it within the horse’s pack. However, Laioath is begins to wonder why the boy chose to stow only the arrows, and not the bow. Wouldn't it not be easier to put away the bow? He thought again. This arouses a slight suspicion.

Erekez then asks his name and if he agrees to the ceasefire. Despite Laioath’s suspicions, he complies. “I agree, I’ll place down my bag” he said, while he removes his backpack, placing it by a small rock nearby. As he drops the back behind the boulder, he places a small doll in his pocket. The doll was dressed up in a blue dress, looking like a fair maiden from a fairy tale. The doll acted like insurance, in case things got sour. Laioath kept his wrist knife, but doesn’t intend on using it, nor the doll.

“My name is Laioath Tongara, but you can just call me Laioath.” He said to Erekez, returning to where he previously stood. He noticed that he is only carrying nine daggers, and the tenth one was a few steps away. He walks over to pick up the knife, pulling it out of the ground. He stares at the hole made by the dagger with vacant eyes.

“So, you think you can help me?” Laioath asks, still in a crouching looking at the ground. “I’ve got no money, nor do I have anything of high value, so I can’t pay you.” He adds. He turns his head to look at Erekez, awaiting his response. Laioath stand back up and turns his body towards the boy, doll in pocket, and holding the daggers in a non-threating grip.

OOCokay, Thanks :D

The use of ranged weapons (Erekez)

Postby Erekez on January 22nd, 2013, 12:07 pm

Erekez watched as the boy placed his belongings next to a rock on the other side of the clearing. He wasn't sure if the boy had concealed a weapon, or not. He saw no object nor movement that would imply such.

The boy introduced himself as Laioath Tongara, as he reclaimed his final dagger. Laioath seemed to go into thought, and he soon explained to Erekez that he did not have any method of pay. So he is concerned with making it up to me for any help I give. Ath the very least, this one is honest.

"Payment is useful, but as it is not my job, nor can I guarantee the outcome of this, I don't believe I have any justifiable reason to ask for payment. Besides, I offered help to you. It doesn't seem right to then expect something in return." Erekez explained. There were other ways to make money in a city. He was just waiting for his job to be approved. He had enough money until then. It was easier to loot bodies of bandits who had tried their hands against his bow.

"As for helping you, like I said, I can try and adapt what I know to work with your daggers. The first thing that would greatly benefit you would be to remove that doll from your back." The thing looked to have aged, but was well taken care of despite that. Any maintenance work it had undergone aside, it was just going to hinder his practice. "It throws you off balance when you release your dagger. It is much easier to learn without it and accommodate for when you have it, rather then make things harder for yourself when you train to only then find you can't throw without it. This won't help you survive an encounter if it is knocked off your back with no way to quickly reattach it. You need to start with minimal equipment and work your way up."

Erekez remembered when he started out with a bow. Training with it on its own was bad enough, but once he got the feel for it, he found the motions of nocking, drawing and releasing an arrow to become familiar and easier. And then came the practising with armour on. The extra wait had bogged him down, even though he remained still as he practised. The wait of it on him was extra exertion when it came to drawing the arrow again.

He found that after practising again without armour, he shots were more inclined to go up and over the target. That was what he was being taught, to compensate for what you are wearing at the time, after you are familiar with your skills at the base level.

Coming back from his reverie, Erekez focused back onto Laioath, to the doll, to the daggers he now held. His grip would be the first they needed to work on.

"Are your daggers balanced, handle-heavy or blade-heavy?" He asked. The answer would change what method of throwing to suggest. "Balance the midpoint of a dagger on your finger so we can see which side it leans to."
