32nd Winter 512

The forest was all but silent, save for the footsteps of one man and his dog. He was a fairly tall one, sandy hair glinting in the stripes of light coming through the trees, a bow and arrow on his back. The dog was skipping merrily beside him, her pale fur covered with flecks of snow.

This would be the pairs first hunt together. Nate had been training her throuh some sort of play, hiding bones in the trees near the back of the city. She had gotten very good at retrieving things, much like her breed is known for. Nate was hoping that she would be able to collect his kills from a hunt, and this was the day he had chosen to find out.

They kept to one of the small, time-worn paths that wound through the trees. Animals and people alike had stamped it out over amny years, and it was one of the routes more familliar to the young man. Rounding a corner, he heard something moving up ahead, and immediately crouched and slowed his pace. Ashca fell behind him, nose to the ground.

The creature slowly came into view ahead, and Nate relaxed at what he saw. A little white fox was stopped in the path ahead of them, snuffling at the ground. Nate paused in his movents, watching the animal. He had never seen a Talderan Snow Fox in the wild before, just the pelts that people sold in the city. It was a beautiful thing, its coat almost silvery in the light.

Nate stayed still in his semi-crouched position till the little fox moved on into the trees. It was illegal to kill one without the express permission of his Hold.
Once the path was clear he stood and continued onwards, Ascha following in his stead.

To Hunt With a Partner

Soon enough the pair came to a small clearing. It was empty, and the trees around it were slient. Nate slowly circled it, noting small patches where animals could potentially find nourishment near the tree roots. The lack of footrpints showed that nothing had yet been here today at least.

Nate picked a large tree near the edge of the clearing and crouched to the side and slightly behind it. Ashca lay in the snow next to him, and the pair waited for something to appear.

Sure enough after a bell or so, a trio of rabbits ventured into the clearing. Now, Ascha was no hunting dog so the chanches of her taking one down was minimal. Nate had gotten a lot better with his bow recently, but he was still working on drawing arrows quickly. He had seen hunters that could take down multiple targets one after the other in rapid sucession. That was what he needed to work on. Now was a good time to try.

With Ascha watching, Nate slowly and quietly took up his bow and fixed an arrow to the string. He pulled back his arm, taking a deep breath to steady his aim. After a mental count in his head, he released the arrow, and it flew straight into one of the rabbits chests. As quickly as he could, Nate pulled another arrow from his quiver and knocked it. The two remaining rabbits had panicked and started to flee immediately. Nate was not quite quick enough, and by the time his second arrow flew they were gone.

He sighed in frustration, and motioned for Ascha to retrieve the rabbit. As she did so, nate picked up his fallen arrow. It seemed he would need a little more practice before he could fire of arrows in sucession.

After removing the arrow from the rabbit that Ascha carried, Nate decided to have a practice at quick-shooting. He selected a tree opposite where he stood as his target. With an arrow set against his bowstring, he placed his feet shoulder-width apart and took a deep breath. He focused carefully on his target, pulled back the string and fired. As soon as the arrow left his bow, his hand reached back to his quiver for another. This one too, was pulled back and fired at the same tree.

Nate repeated this till four arrows were lodged in the bark of his target. He was quite happy with the speed he had managed, though his aim seemed to have wandered with each shot. Still, they had all made it to the tree, and that was something at least.

He trudged over and began to pull his arrows from the bark, his first lodged a fair amount deeper that his last. When they were all returned to his quiver, Nate motioned for Ascha to follow, and he started to make his way from the clearing. The dog trotted happily behind him, the rabbit swinging from her mouth as she went.

After a while on the path, they came across some tracks he hadn’t noticed before. They appeared to be rabbit tracks, and not the rabbits they had seen earlier for they were heading in the wrong direction. Nate decided to follow them, since if he could even get just one more his trip would be slightly more sucessful.

Sure enough, the tracks led to a clearing a little smaller than the previous one. There were just two rabbits here, but Nate would only take one. He didn’t want to try quick-shooting again till he was sure he could do it.

Motioning for Ashca to stay still, he knelt and took his bow from his back once more. Nate steadied himself on his knees before pulling an arrow back on the string. Upon release, this one flew true, taking the rabbit in the head. At his signal, Ashca dropped her current rabbit and moved to retrieve the second. He took the arrow from it, picked up his first kill, and together the pair began to make their way back to the city.

Notes: This was a nice simple thread involving more of Nate’s hunting attempts. I really like the partnership Nate and Ashca has going. If you want more animal husbandry experience for Nate’s interactions with Ashca I would recommend that you maybe write about him working with her on her skills to keep her training fresh. Her doing what she has already been taught isn’t quite the same thing. I really liked how you noted that Nate didn’t shoot the fox because it’s regulated by Frostfawn. I’m glad you included that bit of lore and I thought it really helped add some realism to Nate’s hunting trip.
