Sahova Science Fair (Real title coming soon)

Image

Yep you heard right! It has been a while in the making but here it is, the official announcement of the up coming Science Fair in Sahova! In this announcement I will give you a description of what the fair is about, some of its history and purpose, list your possible prizes, introduce you to your judges and at the very end I will even give you the grading criteria that the judges will be using! So take some time to read through this carefully and plan your porjects so that they meet all standards. Right now I have 3 contestants, 2 of which are working together. I will list the contestants here as well. So then, lets get started!

History of the Science Fair

These gatherings have been going on for right around 500 years, and they began shortly after the Valterrian. This concept was first brought forward by Lector Quio as a way of spurring on the residence of Sahova in order to keep them from losing their purpose (as well as to keep creating weapons for him). At first the Archwizard Zarik Mashaen opposed this idea, seeing it as futile, but as the years progressed and more and more nuits began to die literally of boredom Mashaen as well saw this Science fair as a useful way of keeping Sahova's Wizards interested in continued existence. Thus around 60 AV the Archwizard created the first Science Fair, calling for all of Sahova residence to come together twice a year to present their latest and greatest achievements in the hopes of further funding for projects, as well as to gain status and prestige among the other wizards of the island. Since then the Fair has grown into a much look forward to event in Sahova, the closest thing to a holiday the undead will ever have. It is a time to showcase what you can do, make new contacts and of course earn a bit of coin for your creations. The Wizards have grown quite competitive as well, and every year there are cases of sabotage and foul play, yet neither Mashaen nor Lector Quio does anything to prevent this. After all only the best can be rewarded. Sahova is, and always will be, a place where survival is key.

Layout of the Science Fair

The Science Fair takes place in the later half of the Spring and Fall Seasons, from the 80th to the 91st. It continues on for 41 consecutive days, day and night, and involves many demonstrations of some of the greatest innovations Sahova has to offer. Every day there are 3-5 demonstrations held within the Courtyard, and during these days all lab doors are open to anyone who is curious to walk in and see what each Wizard is working on. It is an excellent time to gain contacts with masters in various fields, as well as glean new wisdom from ageless crafters.

IC Info
Days 80-87 are generalized days when any and everyone can present their latest invention for the rest of Sahova. This is the time when one can learn what new and wondrous projects are going on around Sahova, as well as find some like minded individuals with which to work with later on down the road. During this span of days all labs are open to the public, and even pulsers may be permitted to join in and ask questions and inquire about various projects as well.

Days 88-91 are the days of judging when those wishing to earn greater funding for their projects step forward and pit their projects against others of Sahova. For 4 days there are demonstrations before a panel of judges who cast their votes for whose invention is best suited to earn further grants. On the final day of the fair the winner is announced and awarded their prize, and their name goes down in Sahova history for their contributions to the Citadel. Those who compete usually keep their greatest inventions stashed away until this time for fear of sabotage or foul play. The judging of these contestants can take place wherever is most convenient for the crafter, but it is recommended it be where their item/creations full capabilities can be easily seen.

OOC Info
Days 80-87 are days in which players can literally go into anyone's lab and look around, and all Wizards are obliged to answer any questions about their projects presented to them. This is a great time for Players to learn something from the maters, as well as find possible new teachers to apprentice under. These days are used as a social time where nuits get out and talk to each other instead of sealing themselves away in their labs, and during this time even Pulsers are given (nearly) equal respect. The floor is open for new discoveries, and all players are encouraged to talk to as many people as they can. Discovering new contacts can lead to amazing new opportunities in the future!

Days 88-91 are days of judgement where the biggest and most dangerous experiments are brought forward to the public eye. Nearly anything can happen during this time, and it is not unusual for lives to be lost during the contest. Those who wish to participate in the final judging must register at the end of day 87, and I will later on provide the application form this coming Spring.

Lets meet our contestants this year!

As I said right now I only have three people who definitely want to participate, and they are the following:

Thomas Cosa and Mienskil Ostovik will be working together in a joint project. From the sounds of it theirs is going to be VERY interesting. They have already started work on their project so the rest of you better hurry up!

Rayage is entering the contest as a single participant, and he is already a well established Master in Sahova. Probably the greatest Alchemist that has every lived, Rayage is currently creating a new kind of Homunculi, and that is not even his entry into the contest! He/she is going to be hard to beat, so those who enter better bring their A game!

There is still plenty of room for more contestants, but if I do not receive enough I will be making a couple NPC's for you all to go up against. These NPC's will be touch, and their projects will be pretty epic so there will not be any easy wins. Remember these NPC's have just as much chance at winning the grand price as any PC, so the pressure is on.

Lets meet our Judges this year!

My original plan was to simply judge these contestants myself, but then I thought "wouldn't it be more fun to bring in someone different to cast their vote?" Well I was correct and this will be way more fun! So without further ado here are your 3 judges who have so awesomely volunteered their time to this little event. Please help me in welcoming them!

ImageJudge number one is none other than Echelon! This wonderful AS of Zeltiva has volunteered his time to bring his special brand of awesomeness to Sahova. He is smart, quick and well known for his weaving of stories, and he is perfect for the job! He is on lend from Paragon for this event, so treat him nicely you here?

ImageJudge number two is someone we all know and love, Queen of the Suva Sea, I give you Cascade! She has wonderfully decided to take a moment of her time this Spring to offer her creative wisdom to this event. She is master of the seas, weaver of epic tails and tamer of the Balnag! Though she does not do nuits that often, she is very good at going with the flow and has volunteered to make this event great!

ImageLast but certainly not least, Judge number three is none other that Gossamer! A woman who needs no introduction, she is a Founder, amazing story teller, creator of several gods and a lot of Mizahar itself! We are more than honored to have her as a judge in this contest, so do your best to create something to entertain her haha.

Please take a moment to thank each of our three judges for their volunteering. They certainly didn't have to do this, but we appreciate it! Each of these judges will be playing the part of an NPC judge during the event, and they will be grading on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest. Each of these three is well gifted in at least one branch of magic, and in fact one of these judges help to create some of them! They know their stuff, they are smart and insightful and will judge fairly. So do your homework, study hard and give 110%!

Judging Criteria

As promised I am providing you the criteria that the judges will using when evaluating your score. Read through it carefully, and try fit each category as closely as possible!

1) Innovative: The judges will be looking at each invention and determining just how creative and innovative it actually is. They will be looking for something new, interesting, something that really catches their eye that they have never seen before. Since each judge has experienced a lot of different things in their time in Mizahar this makes this category especially difficult.

2) Usefulness/Function: What exactly does your creation do? Is it useful to Sahova in any way? Yes it is cool you can create a flying bat monkey, but is that REALLY useful to Sahova? The more a creation relates to Sahova and its advancement the higher the score!

3) Materials: The higher grade materials used the higher score you get. If you use gold instead of copper, steel instead of iron, ect. In the application you will need to provide a list of materials used in the creation of your item/creature, as well as a description of the method of creation. Judges will use this information to judge this criteria.

4) Time and Effort: How did it take you ICly to create this? Was it weeks? Seasons? Years? The amount of time your PC has been working on this project plays a roll. The more threads you do= more effort/item put into the project itself. Now this does not count for effort given in individual threads, but in general if a player spends 5 threads as opposed to 3 working on a project it generally turns out better and is more believable and realistic. This is not always the case, but keep this in mind as you go.

5) Plausibility: This is a big one. Does your creation make sense? Does it follow all the lore and rules of magic? Did you skip any steps or did you do it all one step at a time? Your item has to make sense. For instance if you say you have created an item that lets you leap 3 seconds into the future you have to explain exactly HOW you created that item. If the methods you use do not make sense or do not follow lore then your entree is immediately disqualified. This is not a scaled score. Either it is or is not plausible. So be careful!

And that is it for now! There might be an additional criteria added later on, but for now this is what you should be using as a guide line. Good luck!

In closing

Well I am finally at the end of this haha. A few closing notes and I will let you all get started. First off while anything goes ICly, OOCly I expect everyone to be respectful to one another and do NOT try to mess up one another's inventions. ICly you can sabotage to your hearts content, but don't do it outside of Role Play.

I will be posting again at the beginning of spring with the events calendar and such, and I will reveal a few more details as the season progresses. Once more I say it if you really want a shot at winning then start your preparations now! I am available for reference as well!

Good luck everyone, and Happy Writing!

[Sahova OOC Thread] Rest in Peace

Postby Mienskil Ostovik on February 1st, 2013, 9:07 pm

Whoa, I wasn't even taking it that seriously... but it's on now! :D

So since this happens at the end of NEXT season, that gives Thomas and me plenty of time to adapt our idea and improve it. Anyone going up against us, you better be ready to work hard! :P Except Ray, he's probably the only one who'll have it relatively easy.

Also, anyone who wants to join us and help us finish our project, you're more than free to! It might not exactly be in the spirit of competition, but our project relies heavily on magecrafting and gadget construction, both of which move faster with more people. And the faster we move, the more time we have to improve. If you want to learn a bit of magecrafting let me know, or if you'd rather learn gadgeteering alongside Thomas then go talk to him. :)

So yeah, good luck all!

P.S. Could someone help Mien gain some IC knowledge of this event? Newb. :D

I think Ray and Vick need to do their thread from last season >.> and work on it throughout this season creating the awesomesauce project we have planned as the Masters (Vick is almost there!) of the island.

Vick! This is a call to action.

Also... I dont think Ray will be very willing to have his lab open for the Science Fair. People might steal his secrets :P What then?

Mirage you never outlined the prizes like you said you would!

Oh didn't I? Well I am afraid those are secret for now anyway :P. Well they are until I finish figuring out exactly what I want them to be. For now this is what ya go, so prepare!

Also Labs have to be opened! Doesn't mean you have to have everything laid out for people to see, but your doors have to be open to the public. It is sort of a forced meet and greet, and yes it is possible for plans to be stolen. But hey that is part of the fun ;)

*Puts up a sign which says -Enter at own risk.- and goes to prepare many many glyphed alchemical reactions which will do random and unpredictable things if triggered. Like turn you pink, or kill you*

Vick needs some umm helpers or better yet Legacy Testers. This job is rather simple so you won't need any skills to do it.

Soo anyone want to help a poor child out?

Rewards? Well this is Sahova so you will have the reward of helping out a fellow mage.

If you cant find any volunteers Im sure we can force a couple Pulsers, who obviously have nothing better to do such as preparing for their own science fair entry, to test them. >.> Go Team Undead.
