Continued from the Opal Temple

Merida nodded succinctly at the response. There was of course no way or need to force the woman into joining the Order, especially if she admitted to wanting to achieve the goal within her plentiful lifetime. A finger brushed her lips for a moment. "I am not sure if your time here will count towards your two years, but I believe I hear someone approaching who can help you."

It would take a moment for Nira's hearing to catch up with the perceptive receptionist, but upon the cold hard floor the subtle tapping of feet crossing the space of the halls could be heard getting closer with every tick. Image Around the bend came a lean and trim figure, wearing a halter top that fully exposed the mark form Rak'keli upon her chest. Two stormy grey eyes didn't miss a beat before scrutinizing Nira, and she cleared her throat. "Student or applicant, Merida?" The voice was sharp, but not unkind, merely eager to get to the point.

The receptionist smirked. "Both and neither." The lean legged Konti's hands slid to her hips, but before her lips sporting a shining golden ring could utter any further noises, Merida raised a hand. "She is a prospective to the Order, but her time here is short. She wishes to take classes as well as work, and is also curious as to whether her time here can count toward joining your ranks." She glanced once again with alarming accuracy towards Nira's gaze. "This is Drae Sommers, our resident herbalist. Drae, this is...I don't believe I got your name, miss?"

OOCNice art!

Nira’lia turned her head to look at the newcomer. Her lip was pierced and she had Rak’keli’s mark on her chest. The young Konti did not miss the woman’s scrutinizing look, and Nira’lia responded with a sheepish and embarrassed smile. She stood in place and listened to the short exchange of words between the two.

‘Drae Sommers… resident herbalist,’ repeated Nira’lia in her mind as she gave Drae a cautious look.

When Merida addressed her once more, she looked up and nodded. Up until that moment she had only been listening.

“My name’s Nira’lia,” she said abruptly. Not knowing what else to say, she added nothing more.

The herbalist waited a couple ticks, eyes narrowing to see if the woman would give her any more information besides a name. When she didn't Drae smirked, though for Nira, this was not a particularly comforting expression. The herbalist gestured with her hand for Nira to follow and turned away, walking briskly and not checking to see if the Konti was following her. Without so much as a glance to her side she began speaking.

So, Nira'lia, give me the tale, the life story, why you heal, how long you've been doing it, everything. I need to know the motivations and wants behind the pretty faces I see everyday." They emerged outside and a white stoned pathway took them through an underpass of sorts, winding downward slowly but surely towards the underground portion of the temple, which of course was a great deal of it. Despite her abrupt and rather blunt nature, the herbalist waited patiently for Nira's response, and the aura she gave off now as the atmosphere got cooler and damper, was much more relaxed than previously.

The herbalist’s smirk made Nira’lia feel uncomfortable. The young Konti stopped herself from looking down at her feet and kept her eyes steady on Drae Sommers. This was a strange situation to her. When the herbalist gestured for her to follow, Nira’lia didn’t even think of not doing so.

“Why I heal…?” repeated Nira’lia, puzzled.

Why was she being asked? Was it a pre-requisite to attend classes in the Opal Temple? She had not been expecting this at all. Nira’lia was not the most vocal of people when it came to speaking to those who intimidated her, and it took her a few moments of careful thought before she finally responded.

“I am not from the island, but I do think that’s rather evident,” she said. The Konti looked ahead as they walked, curious as to where they were heading. “I was born as a slave to a Sunberth family, and escaped with my mother and sisters about a decade and a half ago. Medicine has always been my interest, and I learned most of what I know from my family. I do not remember as to when it all started, as it is something that has always been present throughout my life… throughout thirty-three years,” Nira’lia paused for a while as she glanced at the lily’s mark on the back of her hand. It was the mark of Avalis, the one she had been blessed with on the day she was born. “I was not born with Rak’keli’s mark, but I am loyal to her as much as I am loyal to Avalis, and she gave me her mark about a year ago.”

“Miss Sommers, I have a lot of motivation as to why I want to further my learning in medicine. I don’t know how to explain it in a way that would explain how much I want to someday be part of the Opal Order. But… I am in some business with the Knights and I have to go back to Syliras soon, but I don’t care how long it will take, I know I will be back here again and train for the Order. That much I’m sure.”

Drae was silent as the young Konti explained herself, nodding every now and then and looking at her sister intently. She enjoyed hearing the tales of her brethren, especially those that had been born outside of Mura.

As they continued Drae removed her light shoes, holding them in her hand. If Nira was wearing any footwear she would beckon her to follow suit. Soon there were treading through shallow waters, the hallways entirely covered. Aquatic vines crawled up the stones and Drae would pause on occasion to turn a flower towards her, checking the stems and leaves for any sign of decay or malnourishment. After a long pause she spoke. "Despite my mark, I have always preferred plants to people. Our sisters are kind and patient individuals, and I enjoy their company, but when I embark upon my travels for the Order it is to find new plants that can help me in my studies, not to interact and learn from others. I take pleasure in my work as a doctor, but not as much as I do tending to my flora. It is why Rak'keli shall never mark me again, yet my relationship with Bala and Makutsi flourishes like a flower after the spring rains." They approached a three leveled fork in the hallway and Drae led them to the right. The tunnel was straight for a while, then took a long curve, a light at the end suggesting a more open space.

"I always feel as if outsiders sometimes see Konti as all the same, beautiful women with magical powers bent on healing the sick, yet we can be as variant a the types of plants in a forest, some smooth and silky, others prickly and dry, just...perhaps fewer of those than other races." She smirked. "I am not concerned with your devotion to Rak'keli or it competing with the worship of another deity. Perhaps others would be, but that she has seen fit to bestow her first mark upon you, that is enough for our Order."

"If you were a shorter lived race applying for membership, I would allow you to use this time and include it toward eventually joining our ranks. As it stands, you are still a very young woman, Nira'lia, and it would seem an ambitious one as well, so I cannot allow you the same courtesy, especially if you are truly devoted to returning. What I can offer is half price for taking classes with us. It isn't much, but it will surely help with the learning process. Do you find these terms acceptable?" She waited for a response, and shortly after that the two Konti emerged into a large open expanse.

Her nature and mannerisms all would make sense to Nira as she explained herself in the halls, the way she seemed to relax in the presence of plants, her abrupt manner to even her own brethren, and it soon became clear the true extent of her devotion to her plants and maintaining the herbal section of the Opal Temple. The first room had a ceiling that reached at least 50 feet high, and was a massive pool. Where Nira and Drae entered the water was just as shallow as it had been throughout the other halls, but it was clear that the further you walked the deeper it got and a myriad of aquatic plant life was flourishing in the large pond the room created. A massive hole in the ceiling was provided in the ceiling for rain and sun, and in the wall were neatly inscribed tiles above the plants that gave their common and Kontinese names. A room to the left was also filled with water, but was for plants that flourished in salt water and had no need of sunlight. Konti swam in the pools tending or collecting parts of plants, but every room also contained narrow walks for entities that preferred not to swim.

After showing Nira the aquatic flora Drae led the prospective healer up a set of stairs into a large green house, curved panes interspersed between the branches of some massive plant that provided the support of the dome for the indoor garden. Here the plant names were more familiar to Nira, not being native inhabitants of Mura: Tumeric, Elderberries, Echinacea, Ginseng, Ginger, Acai Berries, and a myriad of other well and little known medicinal plants lined the walls. The room was hot, and attendants went around watering the plants and participating in much the same activities of the other rooms. Drae walked over to a small shrubbery, fingering some small under ripe berries, holding her palm beneath a handful of them she closed her eyes and summoned the power of her Gnosis, in an instant the blueberries had ripened and Drae picked them off, offering a few of the juicy fruit, ripened to perfection to the interviewee. "Now tell me, and don't worry, I won't be offended, do you see yourself spending time in the infirmary of the Opal Temple, or studying and herbalism while you're here? Which are you more proficient with?"

She looked around the place curiously as they went deeper. The water felt cool against her skin, and she was also interested in the various plants that surrounded them. She found herself highly fascinated in Drae Sommer’s story. Nira’lia knew that there was much more to healing than just medicine, and her own family was a model of that. Her older sisters were healers but they had specialized interests and fields. As they walked through the halls, she nodded in agreement to the herbalist.

However, as her sister continued to speak, Nira’lia’s smile began to falter. The Konti felt disappointment about the truth behind her words. It was true, she was young, and she had many decades left… but the thought of not being allowed to start working towards her goal?

Nira’lia had not known exactly how important this was to her until she heard it.

They walked for a while, all the thoughts muddling together in the young Konti’s mind. The sight of the rooms she was being led through was beautiful, but she could not focus. They soon came to a warm room and she was offered blueberries which had ripeedn before her eyes. Daintily, Nira’lia took them in her hands.

“I like working with patients and I have been working in infirmaries up until recently,” she said, confident in her answer. “But truthfully I would also like a change of pace and to study with books, plants, mentors. I want to improve on what I know about herbalism and philtering.”

She paused again. Nira’lia stared at the blueberries on her hand for a few seconds before speaking up again.

“I do not understand,” she muttered. The Konti looked down at her feet. The words came out on their own accord, and she could not believe what she was saying. “I am devoted to returning, that cannot be changed… but time is time, why can I not use the time I have now to join your ranks? I am at a terrible position with the Knights, who knows when they would let me return. I… I am not the most impatient of people, but I am certainly impatient about this. I apologize if I’m overstepping, but I would just like to know the reason why I cannot start working towards joining now. I hope I am making sense.”

A broad smile broke out upon Drae's face at Nira's words, and for a few moments a melodic laughter filled the gardens. Though the expression had faded somewhat when the herbalist spoke, the glimmer of her amusement and was that...pride? Still hung upon her lips. "So you do have thorns after all, good."

She gestured Nira over to a section of benches and took a seat, crossing one scaled leg over another. "I understand your perspective, Nira'lia. You are youthful and perhaps a plan for your future, why waste you time getting a job here and then have that time count for nothing upon your return? I would be upset if I were in your position hearing the words from your lips." She tapped a finger thoughtfully upon her cheek. "I suppose this has happened before, a person wanting to take their time in segments, yet I cannot recall." She looked to Nira. "So tell me, if you were me, what would you be thinking of you? What are the advantages for me of letting this time count towards your entrance into our ranks, what are the disadvantages, if any?" Her eyes were brimming with curiosity to see how the Konti would respond. An unorthodox interview, to be sure, but Drae Sommers would not fit into any of the meaning of orthodox if one tried.

Nira’lia’s cheek flushed with embarrassment as soon as she heard the herbalist’s laugh. She balled up the blueberries in her fist and put her hands to her side, thoroughly embarrassed. In a bout of misunderstanding, she thought she was being ridiculed.

Normally, she would have put it to rest by now. The Konti would have complied immediately, but now she felt challenged to make herself heard. It was uncharacteristic of her, and she knew she could very well be in the wrong—she felt as if she was wrong to answer back—but a part of her wanted to see this through.

“If I were standing in your place right now, looking at me… I would be more accommodating. It’s not my fault I cannot stay! You are my sister and you know the dangers of sight, I saw something I wasn’t supposed to, and they will not let me have my own will,” she said. Her tone was slightly annoyed, an aspect that alarmed her as she heard herself. Nira’lia would refuse to divulge her situation with Syliras and why she couldn’t stay, but she was frustrated with the whole ordeal. In her mind, she was not at any fault. She had found out about their secrets without meaning to, and as thus, they wanted her with them. “Medicine is one of the few things I am good at, I’m not nearly as skilled as those of your ranks, but I do have pride in what I know. I… I assure you that I will not disappoint, and that there is the advantage. I don’t see any disadvantages to helping out someone who very badly wants to be part of your ranks. If I leave here, I will not forget any of my lessons. The time spent away will not make a bad mark against my learning. I know that.”

She was being too proud, and that was rare for her. But it was evident by now that Drae Sommers was not one to beat around the bush. Nira’lia cursed herself for not being more humble, but she could not stop herself.

“If I really cannot… I assure you I’ll take it wholeheartedly. But I at least want to explain my side.”

The herbalist waited patiently for Nira to finish, her face straightening as the Konti let her have it, as it were. Honestly Drae missed this kind of prideful display. Most of her own attendants were a bit too respectful for her liking. When Nira had finished, her head tilted as she mulled over what had been said. "Not the most objective response to be sure..." Drae surveyed her interviewee as a cat would a mouse, making sure to draw out the silence for a good long while, face a blank slate. "...But then again you did as I asked." She then slapped her leg and stood up, face breaking into a smile at the nervously frustrated expression on Nira's face. "Don't worry sister, your frustration befits a race much more impatient than our own." Her smile straightened a little. "I appreciate your passion and fervor, Nira'lia, but you must look at these things as those of the Order do. We are an old group, made up of long lived creatures, and time and dedication are key in our studies. We require a potential student to commit to the two years required, and show us this commitment before we accept them into our ranks, I cannot simply bend these rules, even if I wanted to." She glimpsed the disappointment upon Nira's face and shook her head. "Do no fret, sister, though you cannot stay the time for training, your skills will earn you a place as one of our healers." She smiled and extended her hand.

"Congratulations, Nira'lia, I, Drae Sommers, accept you as a healer of the Opal Order. While the time you spend here will not count toward joining our ranks, I can offer you free classes with me to expand upon your herbalism skills. Are these acceptable terms?" A twinkle in her eyes already knew the answer to that question, but wished to hear from the Konti anyway.

It would have been a sign of disrespect not to shake Drae Sommer’s hand; as such, even as she hesitated, Nira’lia took it. Her eyes were caught in a daze for a few seconds as she caught a glimpse of the herbalist’s most precious memory. And she smiled to herself, that vision giving her some insight and understanding to the intimidating lady.

“Really…?” started Nira’lia.

It was as if she hadn’t heard the words, even if they had come to her loud and clear.

A wide smile spread almost immediately. Truth be told, she had not expected this outcome at all. Even the topic itself had not been on her mind when she had come to speak to Merida of the Opal Order.

“Those are definitely acceptable to me, thank you!” she exclaimed, her voice louder than usual. The young Konti was full of excitement, and that was evident in her every move. “Thank you, Miss Sommers! I look forward to learning under you!”
