He shifted through every file of his mind searching every nick and cranny, from childhood memories with his sister to much more recent ones.
As if a spell had hit him a memory came back to him slowly at first but then it flew through his cranium at full force overflowing his senses.
Flashback
The sun was shining and the weather was moderately warm that winter day as he sat on a bench outside the makeshift house. His big sister was sitting next to him all smiles as she always was. She was swinging her legs back and fourth, her black hair falling all over her thin shoulders.
"Ezzy?" She asked using the nickname he said he hated but truly kind of liked. Of course he would only alouw her to use it. She continued to watch the sky, her eyes following a stray cloud.
"hmm?" he responded softly in a questioning sort of way.
She twirled some of her hair around her finger looking in deep thought before replying in a soft voice "Do you ever wish you could be a bird?"
Ezra looked up at her with a curious expression on his face. His sister had always said that his face was overly mature for his age, Always found deep in thought.
He looked away from her and looked back toward the cloud specked sky, noticing a bird floating and gliding through the air. Over and under, loop after loop the bird continued tirelessly.
"It looks like a lot of freedom" He answered her earlier question. "dad always said that freedom comes with responsibility, and I dont think I am ready for that so, I dont think I want to be a bird for a while."
She looked at him and smiled widely the sun glittering in her Silvery eyes, "You are way to serious about this."
Ezra shrugged, he couldn't help it. He didn't have an imagination like the other kids his age, and found it hard to make friends. So he was always stuck to his sisters side.
He looked up at the sky once more to locate the bird but came up with nothing. The bird had flew away, and he was probably never to see the same bird again.
"I want to be a bird" She had said those next words with such honesty.
Ezra looked at her with a blank face and the only thing that was running through his head was 'She is going to leave me too one day, I dont want her to leave me alone, I dont want to be alone.'
The next words Ezra said he would always remember "Take me with you."
End Flashback
Ezra sat up in his bed, not knowing what expression he should wear. He wasn't good with expressions or emotion.
He sat there for a good while, his mind muddled when his ceiling dripped on him, the water running down his cheek. He looked up, he hadn't even realized it started to rain.
The ceiling was dry he noticed. He lifted a hand pressing it to his cheek wiping up the water.
He was crying...
And at that moment Ezra felt truly alone. His sister had gotten her wish. She became a bird with great freedom and flew away, forgetting all about her responsibilities.
She forgot him.
