Min gave her attention over to the real instructor, as he went to test the temperature of the water, and the stones she had immersed therein. He nodded and beckoned her close. “Stick your fingers in there – that’s right where you want it. Just hot enough to be able to reach in and grab them out. Any hotter and you’re going to burn the patient.”
Yes, yes, Min thought to herself. I have already figured this out. But she listened, silently, after having tested the water herself. One by one she pulled the rocks from the basin and the teacher, looking at the table, seemed to change his mind once again. “Go ahead and lie down, on your back first.”
Min looked at him uncertainly, and for some reason, she looked back over her shoulder, as if she expected to see the other interloper standing in the doorway. But the teacher said impatiently, “He’s gone, don’t worry. And there’s no need to undress. Just lay down and I’ll show you where the stones can be placed.”
Mostly reassured, Min slid onto the high table and lay back, arranging her body carefully for optimum speed of rising, should anyone come sauntering back in. Her instructor, ignoring her wariness, took two of the stones and carefully placed them right under her collar bones. “Now, it’s important to remember, as with most massage, balance is crucial. You always want to place the stones as symmetrically as possible. The benefit of the heat, of course, is to reach deep into the muscles, without a great deal of force.” He then placed three stones, running in a line down her sternum, and a fourth, a bit lower, at her navel. The last two he placed one under each of her wrists, right at her pulse points. “We seek to reach the points of energy flow in and out of the body. The heat opens up the blood vessels, and loosens up all of the bodily fluids – phlegm, mucus – it’s important to make sure the room is quiet and peaceful, so the patient can get the full benefit of all that relaxation.” The man grinned slyly and added, “So I’d suggest that you not invite Dr. Michaels to help out as your assistant. Not that he’d even consider it anyway.”
Min snorted, but said nothing, wishing only for the man to hurry up and get done. What she thought about the doctor wasn’t anything she’d be likely to gossip about with other staff members. Not getting any arousal out of his sour looking pupil, the instructor in fact seemed of a like mind with her. He quickly removed the stones and said curtly, “Roll over.”
Min did so, with a slight huff, and the teacher once again began to place stones, straight down her spine, about two inches apart. “This is standard, but then placement of the other stones may depend on if the patient complains of any pain in a particular spot. You can place them here…” He laid two on either side of her spine, in the dip of her lower back. “Or here.” He moved them upwards to right below her shoulder blades. “I guess you already know the sensitive spots that can be found here,” he said with an amused chuckle. Again Min said nothing, so the guy sighed and moved the stones a last time, to the base of her neck. “Or here – and then we leave the stones for, oh, fifteen minutes or so. Make sure to be heating up another batch meanwhile. Then, when the muscles are well loosened, take a warm stone and begin your standard massage, like this.” With a stone, he pressed down into her flesh, with circular motions, and indeed. Min could feel the extra pressure that was at the same time diffuse. “This is especially good for those with bone pain, or nerve pain. Make sure the stone doesn’t get too cold, and replace it if it does. Massage for about fifteen minutes and then go back to letting fresh stones sit. Massage once more after that and finish with a long stretch of just letting the heat soak in. All in all, about an hour and a half. Got it?”
That seemed to be the signal. Min rolled over quickly and sat up, swinging her long legs off the table and rising to her feet. She nodded. “Yes, I understand. Can I go now?”
The instructor raised a skeptical and not too well pleased eye brow. “You sure? I can show you again, if you like.”
Min shook her head. “I understand now. I know the heat – you humans do not like it very hot. Not like my people. We do not cry so easily – not like OrionDoctorMichaels. But I have used heat to cure, many times. I know now – less heat. Right?”
The instructor wasn’t really convinced, but he could see his pupil was not in a very open state of mind, and that he blamed – erroneously – on the incident with Orion. So he shrugged his shoulders and nodded. “Alright. Just make sure you don’t hurt anyone again. Otherwise it will be my butt in a sling.”
Min nodded one last time and turned to leave, allowing one quick grimace to pass over her features. |
