It was a subtle reaction, but when Evalin hopped up onto the desk, the hypnotist flinched away in instinctual revulsion. It was the body of a child, after all, and much of him was just holding himself back from a knee-jerk vengeance for the blossom of potential that had been snuffed before it could grow. He forced a smile, looking down at the hand he had used to morph. Now that a secret of his was revealed, she sought it. In every mage is a greedy creature that hordes knowledge and gives nothing in return. Some slay this beast, become teachers, enablers, and still others grow more and more warped through the years till that beast is all they are.

What was he?

Ana had been taught morphing by his own hand, and Wilmot had learned hypnotism with him. Evalin had been kind enough to offer a measure of magic only her own, and yet here he was struggling with the decision to give her what she asked. It was not simply greed, but that suspicious fear that one day his willingness to part with magic would come back to haunt him.

Do it.

Zan? Why?

She said she had a secret. Isn’t that reason enough? Uncover it! Explore it! Seek it! Know it!

At the cost of my magic?

What? That’s what you’re worried about? Boyo, I can do what you can do naturally. That poor Irylid is stuck in like…two shapes, and that’s a forever thing. Teach her something to give that poor fellow a little fluidity.

I thought you hated Irylids.

I do.

This feels more like pity.

Can’t I do both?

Which is stronger?

Whichever one gets you to stop talking and show her the trick!

You’re terrible short sighted.

And you’re terribly long winded! Look what I have to put up with!

In five years, will I regret this choice?

Five years? FIVE YEARS? Boyo, I don’t think much past today. You really need to relax, live by the seat of your pants more. Juxtapose.

Juxtapose?

Juxtapose.

How’d you learn that word?

Book.

When were you reading?

I read when you sleep. I’m pretty much bored out of your skull so I find the prettiest words in books and memorize them.

Without the definition?

Precisely. Why waste time with stupid explanations.

For correct usage?

That’s just plain neophyte.

Suppressing a groan, Wren turned his attention back on Evalin, sighed and held out his hand. “Very well, a trade then.” Focusing on his hand, the skin shifted, crackled, puckered, became an emerald green as long black claws curved from each finger. “Morphing is the process of warping your exterior djed…at first, although more advanced techniques can shift the interior Djed as well.” He wasn’t so quick as to give away his mastery of the magic, or at least his perceived ease of use.

“The trick to understanding morphing usually takes time,” the hypnotist began, “But I’m guessing you want the quick course.” Sliding off the desk he crossed the room to where he left his things, taking an inkpot and quill from the supplies and returning. “Now, I’m still fairly new to glyphing, but it’s often best if the initiate sees and feels the process of change.” He paused there, wavering, “I won’t mark you if you fear your body’s damage, but without this kind of instruction, you will struggle…even with the base concepts, for weeks before your Djed responds. I should know, I did it myself.”

His hand was mottled green, shifting, fighting to reclaim the colors of his original skin. It took longer than it should have, several shades of pale and peach showing till he matched skin colors and even then, the nails took some shaping. His body had lost its elasticity…and if he did not will himself to change, he would not…and his form would be lost forever.

A sobering thought.

“The magic changes certain things about yourself, mostly cosmetically to begin with. I wouldn’t mess with your mass or too much of your shape till you understand the core tenants of morphing in entirety. For me, the tenants are as follows. Color ,Shape, Functionality. I’ve ordered them in terms of difficulty. Color should be the simplest concept to grasp, simply a change of your skin shade. It will be the first task we attempt to accomplish, but I’ll show you a little of all three tenants for beginning morphers in this lesson.”

He held out the quill, poised, “At your will, Evalin.”

This PC has the Blight gnosis. As such, you as a player need to be aware of what that consists of. Wrenmae has an invisible aura that amplifies sickness and disease. Wounds may become infected, small sneezes may become coughing, and a slight fever may become more serious. A nuit's body will also break down faster in the presence of the Blight. These effects may not be immediate, but within the few days following your encounter, the symptoms will manifest. Some sooner than others. Evalin listened intently to the explanation that was given, her eyes watching carefully, as if to catch the secret to this art as it shifted the boy's skin and sharpened his claws.

Imagine it Tsenrika. she spoke in a tone that could almost be called excitement, To change one's shape and form at will, what wonders does this magic hold. Would free us from the shackles of these simple bodies.

The chilled voice was slow to reply, slipping through her mind like water through the rocky creek, But at what cost... Nothing free be obtained when magic be involved.

Matter it the price? The reward seems all the greater when the price be steep, thus I say it be far more worth the risk than to sit idle and let such opportunity pass us by.

Be it opportunity that approach, or the thunder of a coming storm...?

Evalin shrugged and let her attention returning in full to Wrenmae, and with a laugh, so childish, she leapt down from her place on the desk, "If you need mark upon me to pass on the knowledge you posses, then I have to qualms with allowing such." She moved a few steps away from the desk, her back to Wrenmae as she undid the fastenings of her cloak, letting it fall to the ground. With quick motions she undid the first few buttons on her robes, sliding the cloth down past her shoulders and looking back with a mocking smile, "Do as you wish with me... though be gentle to this child's body."

Wretched Aura: As a Wretched One Evalin possesses an unnatural aura about her that causes unease in those who get too close. It can come as a prickle of the hair on the back of the neck, a sense of 'wrongness' about her. How people experience it is different depending on their personality and how they handle the unnatural and unknown. Animals tend to become more agitated, more easily sensing how wrong Evalin is and often avoiding contact with her.

If hate had been tangible, it would have bubbled from every pore on Wren's body. The brazen way she spoke, her haughty exhibition of the child's body. The girl was not dead of natural causes, never something so convenient. Evalin had chosen this body to be intentionally disarming and the fact of it only brought the hypnotist's blood to a wild boil.

Patience. Patience. A small voice in the back of his head brought him back to his own, but barely. Here he teetered between attacking the monster and teaching it. Her eyes caught him in their gaze, triumphant eyes. She did not know morphing, else she wouldn't have asked. Those faintly glowing orbs were a secret to something.

And in a flood of revelation, he guessed what it was.

When she had slid off the table, walked, played with his emotions, Wren had never suspected her as a nuit. The charactertistic slow shuffle and limited mobility of the corpse-people was a trademark of identifying them. She showed little of that sluggishness, if any.

Something was making her faster, better, almost alive.

The trick was in those eyes.

Fire and wrath hissed from between his teeth as he yanked her robe back up over her shoulders and roughly snatched an arm, pulling back the sleeve to reveal an unblemished, pale, arm. The brush came down to make quick marks, scratches...beginning in a circle, to contain the magic. A limited release glyph, one he had practice in. It would release the change in a drizzle, slowing the ordinarily slow magic to an almost painful crawl. She would feel every bit...and if it backfired?

All the better.

Slow contours later, he let it dry and then placed a finger against the glyph. Pushing his own djed in, he imagined the skin first turning a pale azure blue, than bunching into the shape of scales, and then hardening into them. Color, form, function, and then she'd revert.

He finished, releasing her immediately and stepping back.

"Now." he said, tapping the glyph.

And the skin beneath it began to change.

She could sense it, feel it, see it in his eyes. It only made her smile grow to see that hatred building. Hatred for her, for what she was, for what she had done. All of it felt so intoxicating. Though, as she was roughly grabbed up and physically moved, Evalin could not help but fear for a moment, just the briefest moment, if she had pressed him too hard.

I need not sight to view the fool before me. Bear in mind that you hold the lives of you and I both in your hands. I do not wish to waste mine, so do not waste yours.

Though Evalin wished to answer, to retort, she found her attention trained on the odd glyph placed upon her arm. She saw him work, witnessed him place his finger upon the glyph, and when he drew away she expectantly waited for something to happen. And of course, with a word and a touch, it did.

First came the color. Before Evalin's eyes her skin began to change, darkening and forming pigmentation unlike what she had ever seen before. If she closed her eyes she could feel something akin to bubbling beneath her skin, as if her djed were frothing and pulling colors from deep within to trickle up and fill the skin above. Then Evalin winced as she felt a strange... sensation overcome that patch of her arm. It was like, pulling, stretching. As if she were being pinched over and over again from the inside as her djed pulled at her skin, forming them into the shape of scales and finally hardening them. The hardening was not quite as bad as the pinching. Her djed welled up within the newly formed scales, making them denser, firmer.

Every sensation, every movement of her djed, every change of her person Evalin tried to memorize, to capture in order to recreate. She pressed into her mind the sensations, the feelings that swept through her body as the transformation finally finished, the changes bleeding away with a strange sense of relief closely following.

It seems this magic causes some stress when used... Evalin noted, filing the information away for later pondering.

She traced a single finger over the spot that had, just moments before, been azure blue scales. She smiled, eyes filling with a lust for the knowledge she had obtained, and an eagerness to learn more of it, yet as she glanced up at Wren she knew her price had come to be paid. Pulling her sleeve back in place Evalin once more dawned her cloak, redoing the fastenings and speaking as she did, "What a curious magic you have gifted with me now. I shall be certain to use it to its fullest extent." Perhaps a bit of foreshadowing, or casual small talk...

Once the cloak was in place Evalin would turn to fully face Wren, leaning on her staff and bringing a finger to rest beneath one eye, pulling the lid down slightly, "Now then, you asked me of my secret did you not? Of what these eyes mean?" She chuckled, straightening to walk a short distance from the boy, "Since you have paid me well I will gift you with this knowledge that so very few are privy of. These eyes... these eyes are a symbol of a gift granted to me. A gift that is of the most extraordinary measure."

Evalin gently rested her staff against a desk, turning with the flurry of cloth to face Wrenmae once more, "It grants me power, power beyond what my kind normally can achieve." She smiled, and then she moved, almost a blur of motion faster than most human eyes could follow. Just before reaching Wren she would alter course, changing direction sharply to stand several feet away, her cloak settling around her once more, "To me it gifts speed. I can move faster than most mortals, be they fit or no. For others it grants strength, dexterity, agility. For each it is unique, individual, and it is not only limited to granting those who have accepted immortality."

When next she moved it was at her normal pace, walking slowly to pick up the staff that she had set aside. Leaning upon it once more she smiled, "Have I sated your curiosity then?"

“Nearly so,” Wrenmae said quietly, his eyes roving the faded patterns of the summoning circle, of Evalin again, of her eyes, “That much is evidence, but I am not much more enlightened than I was before.” He considered flux for a moment, truly did, but dismissed it immediately. That kind of callous expenditure would destroy her utterly…this was a passive enchantment, some sort of improvement to the body…it did not seem to rely on the maintenance of Djed as she had been happy to cast that power into her summoning circle as well. “You said you were gifted this power…and so my curiosity deepens.” He stepped in front of the exit, more swayed, a casual move for him that spoke volumes to the little mage before him.
You will not leave till I am satisfied, it seemed to say, and the flinty way he looked at her…it was almost as if he dared her to attempt escape.

“Mages and gods gift power. If it be one or the other, name them…do so and I’ll be content.”

No. Gods no. He’d never be content. One day, he promised himself, he would turn that smug little monster into ashes and spread those ashes to the corners of Mizahar. One day…perhaps not today, in so public a setting, but one day he would destroy her.

Even the villainous had limits and although the hypocracy of his hatred against child slayers was evident to any who knew him, these were issues he did not confront within himself…issues Zan was wise enough not to give voice to.

He drew his own djed, flexing it, preparing it.

“So…” he said with a mirthless smile, “Why not share a full measure of your story, Evalin, while we have time to spare.”

Evalin's smile never faded as she carefully watched the movements of the boy before her. TIme and time again she had faced mages, children, just as this one who sought to forcefully drag what they wished from her, yet each and every time they knew not that that was her intention all along.

Caution be to you now, for I fear you have pressed your luck past its limits with this one.

My Dear Tsenrika... Your youth speaks to me now. Evalin returned, her playful smile widening, The boy is curious, id is burning to know, dying to discover this secret of mine. I can see it, taste it upon the air just as I can taste the crackle of power from him. Yes... So much power in one so young is truly fearsome, but more than power one should be wary of quickly the threads of curiosity can ensnare.

Evalin raised a hand, waving it idly with a chuckle, "Ahhh yes yes I suppose you would not be content with partial truths, and though I enjoy a flair for the dramatic I shall no be foolish enough to leave you with such waxing curiosity." From her body she pulled upon her power, calling the djed within her to course up past her heart toward her head to fill her eyes. Blinking slowly Evalin's power lifted the veil, and suddenly the child before her was lit with colors, swirls of red, flashes of indigo, all chaotic, yet somehow harmoniously they pulsed. His aura was large, far larger than one his age should possess. Grimly she noted that, in raw power, Wrenmae far had her out matched. Yet even as she released the magic and let the normal vision of the world return Evalin did not let her smile waver, "Allow me to take your kindness and plead for more time upon this world with the last chapter of my tail."

She placed a finger under her left eye, closing her right, as she said, "You are right, eyes such as this do not come from just any source, and either mage or God would need to deliver such power that could change such a wretched creature into what I am today." With the same hand Evalin returned her hood to the rightful place, eyes of read staring out from the darkness, "Yet I wonder... If I told you the name of he who gave this to me, would you cast judgement upon the name and allow opportunity slip through your fingers?" A raised eyebrow, perhaps gone unnoticed, "Well... since my life be at stake I tell you all the same. The that you wish to hear, the source of my power... Is none other than Uldr."

Evalin laughed, "I wonder if you fear his name as so many others do?"

Uldr...it was not a name he was entirely familiar with. Bits and pieces of tales, monster stories maybe...it was a god of undeath, yes? Perhaps of death itself? No...that was Dira.

He shook his head, stepping aside to let her through the door. "That is plenty informative, I can seek the rest on my own." He frowned, letting it linger on his face, cast in thought, "That power is useful but...well, I know little of your god, Evalin, but that is nothing that cannot be remedied."

Indeed it would be useful to possess the kind of power she did. If it worked such wonders on the dead, what miracles of movement would he be able to perform?

But now was not the time to seek a bartering with a deity...he had enough of the beings, personally, and had too many plans in Zeltiva at the moment to risk them on catching the interest of some obscure figure.

"We are repaid," Shroud said to her with a nod, "But I will never work with an abomination like you again."

Evalin offered a small curtsey before walking past Wrenmae, though she paused in the doorway as she spoke, "Take care with what you say, for I hear many falsehoods in your words. Uldr is no God of mine, though we have come to an agreement." Evalin looked back at Wren, smiling over her shoulder, "And I do not think that this is the last time that our paths will cross."

In a flurry of cloak, perhaps more dramatic if she were not in a child's body, Evalin crossed the threshold into the hall. She called over her shoulder as she left, a note of amusement in her voice, "Farewell Daeq-Dala. Till when next we meet." Tsenrika followed close at her side, a shinning orb in the darkness cast by the Immortal Witch.
