Winter 51, 507
Open Sea

Edreina was absolutely bubbling with energy, but not in the best way. Her stomach churned and her feet hung from the side of her family's palivar, swinging with such force someone could reason she was kicking the side of the boat, working off some of that energy. Perhaps she was. Perhaps it was just the nervous habit of a teenager who could not bring her mind to focus. Her family had been on a rushed trip to Syliras and back over the last week with little time to stop and let her off deck. Moments after docking, they had offloaded their various supplies and packed the hull with new wares for the vendors at the anchorage. Before she even had the chance to leap down the gangplank and speak with a group of horsemen she had seen near the docks, strange and covered with tattoos, she was being summoned back. Despite her stomping and her glares, they had not allowed her to run about the smaller port, even for a moment. How could an hour on her own, exploring, affect their deadline so greatly?

With a sigh, she tried to distract herself with the sea. Closely she began to observe the ocean, taking it all in as best she could from the - in her mind - secluded deck. For as far as she could see, the ocean was flat, barely disturbed by the weak wind. But, as much as this would bore some people, it fascinated her for a moment at least. In its flatness, she could detect the slight movement of a school of fish barely below the surface, as well as a large gray mass moving towards it - shark? whale? dolphin? Further off, she saw a great flat spot - well, flatter - where a whale had breached before diving deep. Such breach-spots could last nearly half an hour, so Edreina wondered if she had just missed the whale or if it would be returning to the surface soon. Would she see it come back up? No, she doubted it. It was probably miles away by now.

So the teenage, redheaded, hot headed Svefra wished she could also be. Yes, she adored the sea. She adored the water, the smell, the wind, and all that lived beneath the waves. But to be trapped upon a floating, wooden cage for weeks had begun to drain upon her. She needed to swim, to explore, to meet someone new. So unquenchable was her curious nature, the entire sea could not sate it. Frustrated, Edreina rolled from the edge and rose sharply to her feet, bare upon the wood. Her blue eyes darted about like a pair of tiny fish, going from one location to the other as she tried to find something worth doing. She could eat? No, she had done that only hours before, her stomach did not need to be filled - it was her mind that created the sense of hunger. Frowning, she half-heartedly kicked a round of rope, causing it to lose form and dissolve into a tangle. Oh look, entertainment. Knowing that she would be reprimanded for any other action, Edreina picked up the rope and began to wind it up again, going from hand to around the elbow in a figure eight until about two feet were left. She then wrapped it around the rope's folded center and tied an easy to release knot. Hoping to occupy herself for just a moment longer, she walked over to the mast and hung the rope over a peg on the mast beside many other lengths of rope. Looking up, Edreina saw a self-satisfied smile upon her father's face as he manned the helm.

When he saw her, he nodded his head, a sign that he wanted her to come to his side. Grinning, she obliged and ran over to him, knotting her fingers behind her back and constantly shifting between flat feet and the outer edges of her feet as her energy bubbles to the surface. They stood there for a moment, looking out to the sea together. Silent energy passed between father and daughter; in the silence, they shared their minds. Edreina's impatience to go and do is apparent in her motions, as was her resent for being trapped for so long with nothing to do. She began to rock back and forth, a sign that she wanted him to give her something to do, be a father and order her to do something so that - even though she would complain - she would be busy. A cool look from her father said that there was nothing for her to do, that she should go belowdeck and read a book or... "Swab the decks," he commanded, smiling slightly at his ingenuity.

Letting out a mock groan - but hiding a small smile - Edreina disappeared below decks, returning with a large mop and worn wooden bucket a moment. later. The stop at port had left the deck covered in foreign mud and dust as men loaded and unloaded, tramping over the wood in their worn boots. Using a rope attached to the handle of the bucket, she began to lower it towards the water, keeping tight hold of the end of the rope with one hand. As expected, the motion of the boat caused the bucket to get pulled ever so slightly, but not so much that she could not manage. After a moment, she hauls the bucket back up, careful to avoid sloshing, and sets it upon the deck.

Dunking the mop, she begins to whistle. The tune is bright and cheery, like the song of the birds that flit about in the ports, chubby little bodies being flung through the air by wings she personally thought were too short. In her mind, they looked more fit to perch upon a ledge and serenade passerby's. Everyonce in awhile, she would lose herself in her work and forget the tune, hitting a wrong note or changing the tune completely. The work was hard and repetitive, but it kept her mind engaged as she would have to go over a spot several times to get the mud out of the wood grain. Twice she had to refill the bucket before she was done, and her muscles ached. Back and forth she pushed the mop, watching the deck darken and then lighten a few moments later as she moved on, dried by the sun. She could tell that before long, they would need to oil and wax the decks once more, to keep them in prime condition. Once all of the large mud chunks were removed, she began to give the entire deck a general swabbing, a cleaning that would keep her busy for an hour longer but keep her from having to clean them again too soon. Her arms began to ache as they pushed and pulled the mop across the wood. By the end, she was so numb mentally that it took a moment for the whooping of her siblings to register.

They had returned from a trip to places unknown, exploring the nearby coast while the family had been swapping goods. Of course father let them go... Edreina's thought was tainted with envy as she looked to her elder sister and brother. Zindr was older by far, well in the age that she could find a man and join him in his adventures, and yet she still sailed with her family, just upon her own casinor. Oh how Edreina longed for similar freedom. Although her brother, Surai, was only one year older, he was a full head taller and thickly muscled; her parents felt that Surai could care for himself now, so he was allowed to venture off with Zindr occassionally. Dumping out the last of the bucket water with a frown, Edreina finished her chore and went to the opposite railing to look over the railing as the smaller craft sidled up alongside the larger, rocking wildly in its wake. To her vast surprise, Edreina saw Zindr wave in a way that beckoned her onto the ship. Immediately, any boredom or envy was forgotten. Without turning to ask her father permission, Edreina vaulted over the railiing with a whoop and landed on the deck of the casinor, running over to hug her siblings. Three heads of vibrant red hair met as they enclosed one another, separating a moment later. "How would you like to share in an adventure?" Zindr asked, a small, mischievous smile upon her thin lips.

Edreina had never heard more beautiful words.

[Solo] Blowing off Some Energy

Postby Edreina on March 25th, 2013, 10:34 pm

Edreina nodded her head fervently, the motion practically causing her to bounce up and down on the deck. Smiling, Zindr turned to wave at their bewildered father and steered the boat off and to the starboard. Going this direction, Edreina recognized that they have a strong tailwind, but silently wonders where they were heading.

Zindr managed the tiller deftly while Surai tended the lines, keeping them untangled. A comfortable silence fell upon the trio as Edreina sat cross legged between the two. When still they sailed on towards the horizon with no clue as to where they were going, Edreina piped up to ask the question that had been eating at her. Cool as a sea cucumber, as always, Zindr replied in a rather infuriating manner, "You shall see."

Edreina appeared dismayed, groaning and laying her head back against the railing. If she were anymore like father, she would be bald with a beard, the teasing thought brought a smile to her face. Always, she and Surai teased Zindr that she was a replica of their father, but with the body of a woman - they had the same nose, same green-blue eyes, same face when they were angry or mischievous, same sense of humor. But, then again, Zindr and Edreina could tease Surai in the same way, but comparing him to their mother with his delicate features and dark blue eyes; they considered that to be the reason he tried so hard to grow in facial hair. Edreina however... Edreina was the dock-master's daughter, they joked. Her longer face, fuller lips, and lighter eyes set her apart from the family. Were it not for the complexion and flaming mane, she could claim different lineage.

They sailed in near silence til midday, sometimes speaking of something funny that had occurred years earlier, usually at the expense of one another. Just a moment after Edreina had settled for a nap, it seemed, she was being doused in cold sea water, forced awake to the laughter of her siblings. Spluttering, she rose and took the bucket from him, swinging and smacking Surai upon the arm with it. He feigns injury, pretending to give in and sate Edreina's ego for a moment before spinning about and tackling her onto the deck. For a moment, the siblings were a tumble of arms and legs as they wrestled, Surai inevitably gaining the upper hand with his greater strength and experience. When they disengaged, they were both quite wet, and Edreina was satisfied by that. "I just wanted to get you to look around," Surai said innocently, shaking out his hair.

"Why would..." Edreina begins the instant before she turns her eyes from a scrape on her elbow. The sight silences her. They are anchored in a large, crescent shaped sand bar. It could hardly be considered an island, because Edreina could walk from one end to the other in ten minutes or less, and that included navigating the two trees. But that is not what silenced her. Just off to the side was a nearly perfectly round cave entrance. Below the water, it appeared to shimmer invitingly, alluding to the mysteries that lay beneath. Grinning widely, Edreina turned to her siblings. "Is this why you brought me here?" She asked, grinning even wider at the nods of her siblings.

"We found it when docked here for the night. Neither of us had much interest in exploring it, but we figured you would," Zindr said with a grin, an expression that showed just how pretty she could be.

"You figured right!" Edreina cried, throwing herself at her sister. The joy of a cave to explore and of being off of the palivar for the first time in so long bubbled within the teen, causing her to show her age for a moment. Hugging her sister tightly, she silently brimmed with thoughts of what could lie beneath. She turned to see her brother offering her a breath bag and a rope. The bag would provide two full breaths for Edreina and the rope would be her guide back to the entrance. She removed herself from her sister and went to her brother, yanking the items from his hands teasingly before hugging him tightly as well.

Sometimes, Edreina felt as if her siblings cared not about their youngest sibling, for they often forgot her as they went on their adventures, upon the Anchorage and elsewhere. But, at times like this, she could not ignore the eternal bond that bound the siblings, a trifecta. Removing her clothes so that she stands in only her undergarments, rope over her shoulder breath bag fastened around her neck, Edreina prepares to dive. The dive would have to be brief, and she would have to do the set up in a couple of breaths. The water was colder than she had first thought, once she was in the water, treading it. It takes her a moment to stop shivering and adjust the temperature.

First, she took the very long, but quite thin string and tied it to a metal loop on the ship's railing. "If you need us, jerk the rope 5 times," Surai instructed, checking her knot twice. Nodding, she began to pace her breathing, working it into a calm pattern as she continued to tread the water. Taking one final, deep breath, she turned and dived below. Automatically, she knew she had screwed up. The breath bag's string had been looped around her neck only, causing the string to pull against her throat as she dunked under the water. To the amusement of her siblings, she emerged and put her arm through the string as well. Glaring, she returned to the depths quickly, entering the cave and pulling herself through the passage gently. The first prod would be the most delicate one.

She noticed that the mouth of the cave was covered in coral and anemone, even an eel's lair could be detected. From the entrance, she can see that it is pretty much a straight shot, from one end to the other, but quite dark near the end. Though the cave is not deep, it offers some entertainment.

Her first two dives were simply feeling out the cave, exploring deeper and deeper each time to see how far she can dive on a single breath; this also would tempt out any hidden animal or predator before she became trapped within its home. Upon the last time she surfaces, she sees her brother casting a line off the opposite side of the boat. Treading water, she calls out, "I'm going down now! Watch my line!" Nose partially in a book, Zindr nods and waves her down, resting a hand upon the thin line. Rolling her eyes, she began to regulate her breathing once more, finally darting below once her lung capacity has maxed.

Using her body to the best of her ability, Edreina paddles her way to the cave's entrance and quickly navigates the main passage way. When she reaches the point that is half of her breath, she begins to let bubbles slowly seep from between her lips, continuing to pull herself through the cave. By the absolute end of the breath, she is double her original depth into the cave. She pauses for a moment, looking around in the murkiness as she uses half of the breath bag. Around her, the smooth walls are coated in algae as well as the last of the small coral, surviving on little sunlight. As she inhales, she sees a small crab scuttling sideways along the wall. Only a little further from the end of the cave, she pulls herself along the cave, having to dodge a striking eel at the last moment as it defends her home. The cave ends in a tapering, perfectly normal and boring. But, fascinating all the same to Edreina. Sparing no time, she looks all over the crevice and freezes when she sees a small lump in the stone. Quickly, she rubs the algae off of a small, rusted locket. She can hardly believe her luck! What was a locket such as this doing all the way in this cave? Carried in by an animal perhaps? Or was it hidden here? Why would someone hide a locket here?

Edreina did not have long to ponder the question as she realized that she had spent too long in this cave. Already, her oxygen from the first breath was running low. Tucking the locket into her undergarments, she began to pull herself quickly towards the exit. The trip back went more quickly, but she barely made it halfway through before having to take the last breath. Laboriously, she continued to pull herself along, making it almost to the entrance before she had to begin releasing small bubbles ever so slowly to ease the pressure in her lungs. But, by the time she was out of the cave and almost to the surface, her lungs were burning and it was all that she could do to keep from letting out her breath and inhaling water. Finally, she breached, coughing and spluttering in a rather unflattering manner. Her breathing was erratic as her lungs pumped to replace that which her body lost. Looking around, she realized that she must have dropped the rope at some point. Good thing I didn't actually run out of air... she chided herself, swimming over and grabbing the side of the boat.

Zindr looked down at her, slight confusion knitting her pale brow.

"Lost track of time..." Edreina explained, hauling herself up onto the deck so that she can collapse on her back upon the warm wood. Still heaving, she pulls the locket out of her top and takes a moment to inspect it. It is small, circular, and inscribed with foreign ruins. The color of the metal had long been lost to tarnish. Overall, it looked utterly worthless - she could not even open it! But, with a sigh, Edreina tucked it into her top once more and went to sit with her brother.

"Done now?" He asks, focused intently upon his line.

"Yes," Edreina says between her remaining pants, taking the line from her brother so as to gain his actual attention. The look on his face could not have been bought from Edreina's mind. It was a mixture of disbelief and annoyance. "So you should get to sailing." Her grin was a mile wide as Surai mentally debated stealing the line back from her and going his duty. Finally, he made a decision. Glaring, he swiped the pole from her hands and gave her a look that could only say, "You do it!"

With a sigh, she turned and began to assess the tiller and lines with a nervous eye.

With a groan, Edreina easily found herself lost in the lines. Pulling on one line, she noticed that tension would pull the jib one way, and releasing would let it turn to the other way. Before this moment, she had never done more than minding the tiller on a casinor. Placing the jib rope beneath her foot, holding it so that the jib is straight, she tugged at the other line and saw that it raises and lowers the mainsail quite easily.

This can't be so hard... Edreina thought cockily, fastening the ropes, she ran and hauled up the anchor, setting the boat afloat. If I just open up the mainsail, she did so, then set the rope underneath her foot. Now if I just angle this jib right... She began to pull the rope and, with a lurch, the boat caught the wind. Yes!!! Edreina pulled on the tiller so that the ship turned about, the direction that would pull them out of the small bay. But, she did not adjust the jib so the boat lost its wind and stopped dead in the water. A ghostly chuckle drifted over from Surai, causing Edreina's face to redden.

Well... That could have gone better... Gritting her teeth, Edreina adjusted the jib so that the sail was filled with wind once more. This time, she adjusted the jib and the tiller at the same time. The timing was a little off, but she only lost speed for an instant. She left the cove and navigated towards the Northern Star. From this point, she pulled out her brother's astrolabe and used it to adjust herself towards the Flotilla. Hopefully, they would catch up with their parents on the way. If not, they would rejoin at the Anchorage.

Item: a small round iron locket, long rusted over and requiring someone of greater strength to open. Small runes are etched along the rim, side of the cover, and back, some noticeable and some nearly too small to see. Purpose and history unknown, won't fetch more than a copper or two at market.

A very fun and rewarding solo, you got a lot done. My brain aches for trying to think of something for all that detail you put into swabbing the deck, but unfortunately that doesn't quite count as sailing. :P That little trinket isn't worth much to most people so it won't fetch much, but if you hold onto it I have some ideas for a story around it. ;) Some things cropped up about potential cultural dynamics, but nothing serious and so far well within family... boundaries. Looking forward to reading more of yours. :)
Will be gone for a couple days, grades need lifting
