53nd Spring, 513 AV 8th Bell In every relationship, there are elements between fellows that contrast one another, thus strengthening the relationship. Where one may be funny, the other may be serious; where one can tell an amazing story, the other could dance; one may be logical and longer in their thinking, the other quick to make decisions and act upon them. Where one sees benefit, the other may see weakness. Between siblings, the differences often stand out in sharper contrast, and may sometimes have a more superficial aspect. Between Edreina and Surai, this rings utterly true.
As they sat together upon Surai's casinor, constant nitpicking was common and caused the elders who strolled by the laugh and shake their heads as the bickering brought back memories of their own. Reels in hand, the two constantly criticized one another for more than their equally poor fishing skills. Edreina's favorite insult was that without his beard, Surai could have any man he wanted; Surai's was that Laviku must have loved his sister especially so with the way that her body jiggled about in waves when she walked.
So they sat, occasionally managing to reel in a fish, when Surai did something unexpected: he stated that he was jealous of his sister. "You can go and come as you please. You have no sense of responsibility or of emotional ties. Whenever the wind blows just right, you take off with it, not to be seen for days." He sighed and tugged at his line lightly, staring off towards the horizon.
Rolling her eyes, Edreina recast her own line, having fruitlessly reeled it in. "I don't see why you don't join me. We could go off on all sorts of adventures together!" Grinning, as usual, the smaller Svefra nudged her brother's thigh with one toe.
Again Surai sighed, pausing in his motions to turn his somber blue gaze upon his sister. "You just don't get it, do you? I want to have a woman, a family. I want someone that I can grow old with and sit here, upon the Anchorage, until Laviku drags me off the deck to meet Dira. I'm not going to meet my soulmate on the open sea. "
Edreina frowned deeply at the thought, resting her head back against the mast upon which she was leaning. To spend one's entire life upon the Flotilla? Engaging in mundane chores? Never alone upon the Suvan, discovering its hidden wonders? Sounded like a rotten life. "I don't want to drop anchor with someone. Well... not until I'm old and saggy."
"Er," Surai added with a snort, prodding his sister's rear end before scooting away quickly, unable to escape her glare. Now, Edreina was by no means fat, especially when considering a large number of land-dwelling women. But, she was a small bit curvier than the average Svefra woman. Her mother often used to swear it was proof that she was meant to settle down and bear her a multitude of grandchildren.
After that prod, the siblings remained silent for a time, simply sitting and fishing, tossing any catch into a shared basket. For every fish that Edreina somehow managed to snag, her bother hauled in two. After awhile, they decided that Syna had warmed the water too much for fish to be near it and began the arduous process of gutting the fish. |
