The Story Thus Far... Many years ago, long before Abel was even an idea, there was a particular Benshira whom prowled about the tents of his people. Born to the name Ephraim, the man operated under the moniker "The Desert Lynx" and mercilessly preyed upon the peace-loving denizens of Yahebah. It was never clearly understood why Ephraim targeted his own people to steal from, for the people themselves never knew his story and Ephraim never liked to speak about it. For quite some time, The Desert Lynx pilfered and plundered under the cover of darkness, stealing anything from gold to livestock for reasons all his own...
This happened until the fateful day that a caravan graced Ekytol with it's presence. They, a collection of merchants, sellswords, and a healer, hailed from the region of Syliras. Their leader, a Vantha by the name Bran Whitevine, was a particularly shady man who had dealt in the blackmarket for several years, and utilized the caravan as a means to fence stolen goods that came into his possession. Upon their arrival within the city of Yahebah, the people warned them of a notorious thief whom would come to steal all of their wares, and fate would have it that Ephraim did indeed target the caravan during an evening prowl.
However, instead of making away with their foreign valuables, Ephraim had an encounter with Bran. The crafty merchant made the Desert Lynx a rather enticing off then: an invitation to join their caravan and utilize his unique skills in order to amass more wealth than he ever would preying upon the Benshira. As a sign of good will, Bran sweetened the deal by handing Ephraim several hundred mizas. Needless to say, Ephraim was greatly intrigued and agreed to accompany the caravan from thenceforth, masquerading as a simple hired hand. Outside of the region, such a precaution was barely necessary, but Bran wanted to keep his underground activities silent...especially to his sister whom was woefully ignorant of his true occupation.
Her name was Vianne Whitevine. She was a sweet, kind, and loving woman who was a heartless romantic at heart. Since the days of her childhood, all she desired was to have a husband and children to call her own. However, she was born with a physical deformity that occupied the majority of her face. While it did not make her "ugly" per se, it did dampen her chances of competing with her fellow maidens for the hand of a handsome suitor. Years came and went since she had come of age, and not once did a suitor step forward to take her hand in marriage. What's worse, when her parents attempted to arrange a marriage, her husband-to-be called the entire event off after a single look at her! This left her devastated and in the eyes of the Vantha people, she was "hopeless". In order to pry his beloved sister from the brink of despair, Bran offered to take her along on his travels where she could put her medicinal skills to good usage. With great reluctance, she agreed.
For a few seasons, the caravan moved up and down the Kabrin Road with minimal incident...and soon, Vianne found herself apart of the "fairytale romance" she had always desired. Ephraim was always kind and considerate of her, and since they spent ample time together, feelings soon developed. Eventually, these feelings blossomed into a passionate relationship that culminated in their marriage within Avanthal. For a brief span of time, the caravan stopped there, as Vianne desired to settle down and enjoy the "newly wed" life in her beloved homeland for awhile. This aggravated Bran to no end, as he was losing money, and it was torment for Ephraim, as he was not accustomed to the freezing temperatures of Taldera.
Eventually, the two managed to convince Vianne to leave Avanthal and return to the caravan once more and it was business as usual...until she turned out to be with child a few months down the line. This again halted the caravan, basing them in Syliras until Abel entered the world one cold, Winter morning. It was then that Vianne put her foot down, as she absolutely would not subject her newborn son to life on the road. Bran and Ephraim relented and set up shop in the human capital of the world. For a season or so, things went about as usual; though Ephraim was having a much harder time getting away with his heists with the Knights roaming about. After a few close calls, he all but called it quits and began to engage in honest work...which nearly drove Bran mad with anger.
For the first five years of Abel's life, things were blissful for the little family. The young boy, nicknamed "Little Lynx" by his father, was educated by his parents in their respective cultures. Abel was truly happy at this time, as he wanted for nothing and was showered with love by his mother and father. However, this happiness came to a swift and abrupt end when Bran made a bold suggestion to Ephraim. "A heist to end all heists" he called it. At first, Ephraim thought his brother-in-law was insane to even suggest it, but he was eventually persuaded by his sibling's silver tongue to go along with the plan...they were going to rob the Miza Mint and walk away richer than any men in all of Mizahar. However, when the heist was attempted, Ephraim did not get very far...and he was promptly and publicly executed before the eyes of his wife and child.
Vianne was absolutely devastated, as all the lies her husband and brother had perpetuated over the years had come to the surface in one horrifying moment. Bran, for fear of his connection to the attempted heist would come to light during investigation, took it upon himself to relocated Abel and his mother to Sunberth in order to disappear. In his mind, they had enough funds from his illegitimate affairs over the years to be stable for awhile. However, what he didn't count on was Vianne's swift development of vices to get her through the depression the death of her husband caused. In just a few short years, she had developed problems with gambling and drug addiction that burned through Bran's funds like wildfire. This left the shattered family bereft of adequate means to survive, and Bran did everything in his power to keep his sister and nephew from ending up on the streets.
Times were hard for Abel during those days, and in time he began to follow the footsteps of his father. However, unlike his sire's thievery being born of an unspoken distaste for his people, Abel stole out of necessity. It all began with loaves of bread and apples to fill his own stomach, then purses and valuables in order to help pay for the expenses that faced the household. Over time, Abel became rather good at what he did, though he was nowhere near as good as his father. Bran, despite all that had happened to Ephraim, took it upon himself to further set the boy along the crooked path of thievery. He taught Abel how to prowl, how to freerun, and various other skills that would serve the little lynx in his future endeavors. In time, Bran began to get into the fencing business once more by selling all that Abel procured through his nocturnal prowls.
Over many years, Abel took his larceny to a new level by accepting requests by various clients for items that were hard to come buy. For consumers, this option was exceptionally cheaper and much more gratifying than paying merchant after merchant to procure the items for them legitimately. In this way, they would simply pay Bran (whom had appointed himself Abel's manager and fence) upfront and Abel would embark upon voyages across Mizahar in order to secure the item or goods.
To say the least, business has been good thus far. |
