Sewati

Details

Name: Sewati. Pronounced Seh-woh-tee (meaning ‘serrated claw’)
Race: Chaktawe
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Birthday: Day 15, Summer, 492 AV
Tribe: Suli

Appearance

Height: 6.2’
Weight: 220

Sewati has all the common characteristics associated with the Chaktawe. His skin is bronzed with a red tint and his long, jet black hair is braided down his back. His solid black eyes are located beneath a fairly heavy brow. When this is combined with lips that naturally turn down at the corners, he has a severe look and often makes him look sullen or brooding. In spite of this, the smoothness of his skin and the height of his cheekbones gives him an elusive attractive quality. He will often have white paint across his eyes, extending from his brow to his cheekbones.

The most notable difference from his fellow Chaktawe are his broad shoulders. His body has been hardened against the desert he has grown up in and although his natural athleticism give him a fair amount of swiftness and agility, his large frame prevents him from excelling in these areas.

Character Concept

Quiet and reserved, Sewati mostly keeps to himself and is seen as an outsider even amongst his own Tribe. Although not mean spirited, when confronted by someone in a situation he either does not understand or know how to resolve, there is a good chance he will get frustrated and resort to violence as a resolution. For this reason he avoids people and confrontation as much as he can, giving him a subtle presence despite his big size. As a result he has been known to startle others when they suddenly notice him looming nearby.

His frustration is always a quick fuse away from uncontrollable anger, after which he will tend to feel guilty and will spend time by himself in introspection. To try and compensate for his abrasive character he will always be open to helping someone, if they are brave enough to ask. He will even dutifully see through his task to completion no matter what, even to the point of stubbornness or causing himself harm. Nevertheless, his sense of self worth is damaged by what he perceives as a lack of unity with his tribe. A deep desire to please others and atone for his weaknesses occasionally leads him towards naivety, as well as blind faith in people he trusts.

The thing Sewati enjoys most of all is his hunting. He derives comfort in the peace found waiting in silence and the patience required to track his prey. It gives him a great relief from the tension and anxiety he feels around others. Despite the awkward relationship he has with the members of his tribe, he feels a strong loyalty to them and will not think twice about laying down his life to keep them safe.

He considers sympathy and charity a luxury, being of the view that overcoming adversity is important to make yourself strong. So when someone does request his help he will always expect something in return, to show they have some kind of strength. That does not stop him from helping someone in a desperate situation however, if he thinks they have no way to overcome it alone. Although his personality is not a very welcoming one, he doesn’t hold any prejudices against others, no matter who they are or what they might be. Instead he is guarded towards everyone equally and will usually keep all he meets at a distance. However, if he feels someone is lacking in loyalty or neglectful of duty he will treat them with scorn. What he dislikes most of all is people being cruel in any form and this leads to the only reason why he might seek confrontation.

Character History

Early Life - Eyktol

From an early age it was obvious Sewati would be big and strong, even dangerous. So his parents gave him a name meaning ‘serrated claw’ to truly represent this. However, no one expected just how violent and short tempered he would turn out to be.

Growing up he was constantly in fights with the the other children, who would intentionally provoke him to anger. This has left Sewati with a dark reputation, as his body grew stronger his bouts of violence caused more harm to those antagonising him. Not only did this lead to him being avoided by others, but he also sought solitude as a way to cope with the guilt he felt as he began to understand how the others of his tribe perceived him. This has also caused him to miss out on some Chaktawe tales, leaving him relatively ignorant despite a desire and willingness to learn.

By the time he came of age he was no longer finding himself in fights, however his youth left its mark and he has continued to be an outsider. Using the hunting and tracking skill taught by his father, Sewati became a hunter, using a shortbow as his weapon of choice. He even began volunteering to escort other tribe members whenever they desired or needed to travel away from the tribe and across the Eyktol deserts. This went some way to redeeming his reputation, but hasn’t lifted the dark stain of his past, nor the trouble he has with his with anger.

His time in the desert has taught him the skills and knowledge needed to survive in the wilderness and how to avoid its more dangerous inhabitants. While escorting fellow tribe member seeking to trade, he has picked up a basic understanding of the common tongue and even a few phrases of Arumenic. Despite this, he has never shown much interest in bartering or improving his interpersonal skills, considering himself beyond help in this regard.

Heirloom

When he came of age Sewati inherited his father’s shortbow, the same bow his father taught him to hunt with. It is lightly engraved with small birds and on one end of the bow there are dark bird feathers, tied on with locks of hair belonging to Sewati and his father.

Guardian

Sewati's spirit guardian is a Fennec Fox. She is small and quick, and her form has a tendency to streak as she appears and disappears. Her fur colour seems to shift without true pattern, but it slides on a scale from golden straw coloured to a light auburn and back again, sometimes in mere moments. Her name is Shidj, a term whose meaning is quite convoluted, but that generally implies the imprint of a foot from someone or something running swiftly.

Shidj appears when Sewati is in need of guidance, or in times of particular emotional turmoil, and often communicates in a quick and clipped manner, enjoying curling around his neck almost as much as she loves running in the foot prints left in sand.

Relationships

Father
Chajaton, named after a bird of prey common to the Ektol region, made a name for himself as a hunter amongst the Suli tribe. Tall and slender with a wiry strength, Sewati’s father is slow to anger and has a reputation for thinking things through carefully. He taught his son everything he knows about hunting and enjoyed doing so. Although he tries his best to be supportive, he finds it hard to relate to his son’s lack of control when it comes to anger. He also displays a great deal of empathy towards others and is known to advise those who request his wisdom. He is especially close to his wife and was almost inconsolable after her last miscarriage left her close to death.

Mother
Sha’sila, meaning ‘crying fire’, is a slender woman, just a couple of inches shorter than her husband. Quick to anger and more susceptible to frustration, Sewati’s mother has always had a short temper but a gentle heart, often blaming herself for her son’s flaws. As a horse breeder she enjoyed teaching her son to ride and is fiercely protective of any horse she rears. A series of miscarriages has left her infertile, making Sewati her only child, depriving her of the reverence shown to other Chaktawe mothers who have a multitude of children. It has also left her body more frail than it once was, with the last miscarriage almost killing her.
