The Arch

At the very tip of the bay, where the mouth reaches the open sea of the Outer Oceans, there is a single solitary arch, where the raging waters of the sea have worn away the rock. Only a single pillar remains, and the waters crash and wear away at it systematically. One day, even this pillar will disappear, crumbling into the ocean, but for now, the rock has been shaped into an arch that reached into the sea.

The Arch has come to be a place of local folklore in Thunder Bay. Three hours walk from the Docks, quicker by eagle, one will pass through forests and ditches on the way to the headland, where one is gifted with a truly amazing view. The headland and the rock above the Arch is covered only with a spongy moss, and so it is not encouraged that you should walk onto it if you are not skilled in climbing or balance, or you do not have an Eagle to catch you, should you fall. The rockface itself is jagged, with many hand holds, at least until it reaches the lapping waves, where it becomes smooth. This means that the very skilled and brave could, potentially, if suicidal or foolish enough, try to climb down the cliff.

It is said by the old fisherman who stay in the settlement season in, season out, that years back, two Avora, lovers at the time, entirely passionate (a flame sure to burn out soon) crept out to the Arch to make love in an exotic new location. Just as he was about to lay her on the ground, she slipped on the moss in her bare feet, and tumbled naked to the rocks below, dashing her head open. Brave youths often try to see if they can find the blood stains, and those foolish enough and passionate enough might try to make love in the very same spot. Every year on the 19th of Summer, the anniversary of her death, a tour goes out to remember the dead woman and her forgotten lover.

Despite the gruesome history that surrounds this natural beauty, the Arch still garners a lot of attention during the Summer months. On the more pleasant sunny evenings, there is usually one or two looking at the view of the sea, wondering what lies over that far horizon.
