Leaving Avanthal

OOCNo one seemed very interested in coming with, so I'm making it a solo trip.

Spring 70, 513AV, Morning

He'd come into the city to pick up supplies. He'd decided a few days back that it was time to leave Avanthal, but he hadn't gotten around to preparing until the night before. He'd cleared out the cave that he'd been staying in, a few wheels out from the city, and packed his belongings in his pack. He'd left the cave late the night before, deciding to be at the shops as soon as they opened so he could get an early start. He'd walked on little sleep before and it hadn't killed him.

"The early bird gets the worm," he muttered. Another of Kera's idioms. He'd always told her it was a petchin' cliche but she'd just smiled at him and put a finger to his lips. She'd always been able to shut him up with the simplest gesture. He sighed. He was thinking about her more and more, especially when he was human. Petchin' complicated emotions. The emotions of the bear were more basic, more primal, easier to handle.

Never mind that. He needed to focus. He had a long walk ahead of him and not one second of it was going to be easy. He had all of Taldera to cross...out of the tundra and into the forests of the south. From there he'd go east, meet the Kabrin Road twenty wheels or so away from Karjin. Then he'd follow that into Syliras. He could stop at one of the Knight's shelters on the way if he didn't feel like roughing it in the woods. The Kabrin Road was safe enough, but there was no sense not taking shelter when it was offered.

By his reckoning it was a sixty day trip, give or take a few depending on the mood of the wilderness. He had a week's worth of rations in his pack, but he could hunt most of his own food. If worst came to worse he'd wade out into a river, stick his maw out, and hope for salmon. It'd worked before, and it was Spring. That meant spawning season. Did he need a tent? He did turn into a bear...that was something. Sleeping outside was no punishment. He could find firewood and tinder on his own.

He stopped at a mapmaker's stall in the market and leaned over to look at the man's wares. He had a vague idea of Taldera, but it couldn't hurt to be sure. He looked for one that would give him a lay of the land around Syliras as well, but to no avail. Maps weren't the easiest things to come by. He'd escorted mapmakers before and seen the trouble they were capable of getting themselves into. Brave bastards when you thought about it. He bought two maps of Taldera, paying 20 gold mizas. He'd thought about trying to make a bargain but he wasn't in the mood for a great deal of talking. So he'd paid full price, folded them up, and put them in his backpack.

He'd check their accuracy in the wild. He wasn't sure of the quality, but with enough comparisons, even if they were both shyke, he'd be able to get a general idea of where he was. That was a skill he'd picked up with all the traveling he'd done. He stopped again a little further down the way and bought nine gold mizas worth of traveler's stock, three extra waterskins, and a rucksack. He wrapped the stock in a bit of wax paper and stuffed it, along with the skins, in his new rucksack. It never hurt to have soup handy, especially if he were to get injured. Soup could save a man's life. He'd fill the waterskins when he left the city.

Another few steps and another stop. Gods but his mizas were burning a hole in his pocket. He bought a hunter's kit; a leather pouch filled with animal scents, rope for traps, three snares of assorted sizes, a camouflage tarp, and a keen-edged hunting knife. 25 petchin' gold. He counted it up reluctantly, knowing that he was buying on impulse, but not being able to stop himself. He'd never been very good with money. The importance of it had never really stuck. Maybe it was the animal in him.

He slung the pouch over his shoulder and continued his walk through the market, always headed in the direction of the gates. He wanted to get on the road. There was no since dawdling in the city any longer. Every minute he wasted was a minute he wouldn't get back, and the journey was long. He adjusted his various packs and made his way through the market.

Headed toward the gates.

Headed toward Syliras.

OOCAnother quick note: I know this was short, but I don't want any skills. Maybe just a lore or two and the purchased items. Also, I'll deduct that stuff from my ledger ASAP!

It's sad to see you go but this was bound to happen sooner or later. Only a few opt to stay in one place for too long, and Cian sure doesn't seem like one of them. Anyway, have a safe trip through the wilderness! Come visit again when you're planning to drop by Taldera again. :)
