Adding Magic to Philters: Examples.

Postby Liyana Winterflame on June 4th, 2013, 5:33 am

I found very little information in the lore regarding this, except for the mention of infusing a potion with Rak'keli's mark.

What other combinations are possible? How do flux, morphing, projection, hypnotism -- *looks at the lore's magic list* -- auristics, familiary, leeching, shielding, and voiding -- and these are merely the personal magics -- interact or mix with philters? Do they mix at all?

I heard that with reimancy one can make explosive philters, but again, that was about it.

I heard many theories about how, say, morphing, can be added to philters, and while they were interesting they did not seem complete or official.

Here is the philtering lore.

With properly philtered arcana potions, mages can in essence gift their abilities in the arcanic realm to others not equally knowledgeable. Even bearers of Gnosis Marks, such as Rak'keli's Healing, can channel their ability into philters and store their power in the form of specialized potions meant to cure anything from broken bones to burnt skin.

That is a very promising excerpt, but still, without a few more hints or examples I find it confusing to infuse morphing into a potion.

Does the potion also hold information about a specific model, or does the drinker pick his own animal/person to change to?
Does the effect wear off when the potion is digested, or is it a new, permanent skill?
Does the drinker need knowledge in morphing, or can any lay person use it?
If the answer is yes, then do they have to be of the same level to share same skills?

What about flux? Does the potion allow to channel Djed throughout the body faster, or does it merely give more control and awareness? Does it, perhaps, prevent overgiving by using the stored Djed?

Does a leeching philter cause the Djed to interact with it to be absorbed, thus allowing one to pour the potion on a shield and disable it, or throw it on a wizard and render him useless?

Does drinking an auristics philter give one the ability to read others, or does it make him easier to read?

What about hypnotism? Again, same proposition as auristics.

Does a shielding philter allow for liquid shields? Or does it merely give others the ability to create them?

Sorry for the inconvenience, but it seemed necessary to ask this in public, since so few seem to have any idea.

Lemme try to help on the morphing issue.

From my understanding, similar to Glyphing, Morphing must be focused in order to be added. You can't just 'give' morphing to someone as it requires the Djed in your body to receive an instruction to change something. As the person may not be used to morphing, the changes will inevitably be temporary...but say, an expert morpher and philterer might be able to program a rat model into a potion that, when ingested, temporarily changes the victim into a rat...giving instructions with the djed within the philter to change the exterior and interior djed of another person.

For hypnotism, similar to morphing, it comes with instructions. Depending on how you're using hypnotism, the potion would be different. There could be potions to trigger sadness, anger, calmness, or whatever in a person as well as a programmed 'flash' or 'instruction' that triggers when ingested.

I think others could answer a bit on your other questions but remember that djed is kinda programmed, tasked with an instruction which lets it become magic. From my understanding, the philter holds that instruction and activates it when it is applied in the way it was designed to be applied (Drunk, breathed in, rubbed on, etc)

This PC has the Blight gnosis. As such, you as a player need to be aware of what that consists of. Wrenmae has an invisible aura that amplifies sickness and disease. Wounds may become infected, small sneezes may become coughing, and a slight fever may become more serious. A nuit's body will also break down faster in the presence of the Blight. These effects may not be immediate, but within the few days following your encounter, the symptoms will manifest. Some sooner than others. I cannot control your character, so creativity will be left up to you. Best wishes and stay healthy!

That makes a lot of sense, actually.

Still, there is this one thing that bothers me.

...gift their abilities in the arcanic realm to others not equally knowledgeable.

Wouldn't the hypnotism philter you are talking about be simply a tool?

I mean, it doesn't really seem much like "gifting" abilities?
Morphing philter, yes, could be consider "gifting". But what about hypnotism?

See, I see abilities like specific applications of the magic. So in flux it would be a 'flux punch' and in morphing it would be a model. For hypnotism, maybe you could implant a command "Be attracted to me" and have someone drink it and 'cast it' on the next person he speaks to. Like a one time use spell.

I dunno if it could just grant free knowledge of the magic...because there's a lot of practical application and theory behind learning magic. Someone who takes a master's talent in hypnotism would have all the requisite failures and successes that came with it. A lot of magic is about gained experience and personal growth, which I dunno if you can just give away.

It's like trying to give someone a philter for running really well, or sword fighting...dunno if that one is possible.

Adding Magic to Philters: Examples.

I think it would depend from philter to philter, like a master morpher knows enough that he could probably permanently turn you into a rat. But it'd probably depend on the method.

Like a hypnotism philter may make human shaped objects like plant seem human. Or may just outright make you see people not there.

Think of it as like taking a drug, some have permanent side-effects and some don't, but they both may serve the same purpose. I think of philters more like drugs, toxins etc in functionality. And in fact it even shares the same delivery method.

As far as granting knowledge. My interpretation of the quote is closer to giving you temporary or permanent access to the ability. However not skill. Like if you wanted someone to be able to reimance. Than you could in fact have them digest the res infused substance and they very well make a reimancer, but how would he be able to use these is another thing. Could he do the basics, sure but he wouldn't have the know-how of it's intricacies.

All rocks can become mountains but first need to take that shape.
