The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

Time stamp- Summer 21, 504

Her clothing was absolutely soaked and her braid weighed heavily on her head from its intricate placement. Delani was laying over her Striders back, fingers knit together atop the mane and her chin resting upon knuckles as she stared out at the misty valley in front of them. Some yards to the left and right of her, faded into the grass, were other riders. It was a scouting trip for herself, the twenty five year old having volunteered to go with this far more experienced team to retrieve some bones and ivory from the dry pits of Vayt.

They hadn't expected a heat storm to pop up that day and dampen their efforts (and their moods) with its laden clouds, lightning, almost bruising winds, and now flooding rains. The storms had popped up just after lunch when the crew was mounting up to move to the next dried up pool to see what they could collect. They'd collected themselves under a single tent then, hastily erected to shelter the horses too, and waited out the worst of it, discussing whether they should keep going or not. The dangers of the pools of Vayt lay in precisely what ruined the days work. Water made the pits extremely dangerous to any and all that came within its vicinity because it masked the smell of the tar as well as the pits themselves, the less dense water resting harmlessly on top of the corrosive and boiling mess.

The worst of the storm had tapered off, travelling with the winds away from the group now, and left only a steady rain that left them all somewhat chilled and irritated.

"I'm surprised Ordan didn't order us all back to the pavillion, ol' girl. This rain is impossible to see through now." She kept her voice low but her eyes out, the falx resting in its sheath and within reach of the Drykas as she looked into the night. The others were setting up some fires to try and discourage any glassbeaks should they come a-hunting near the gorup. "It's going to make the fires worse, too...I'll be amazed if they get them lit at all." The mare snorted and bobbed her head down once, causing Delani to tip forwards briefly with the mounts momentum. When the mare straightened, she scritched her left ear and sat up, sliding off the Striders back and moving up beside her, one hand still on her neck. "It's way too dangerous to be out on the pits now anyways and this much rain's going to loosen the crust again. We could very well fall through into a pool beneath the surface if our luck fails us."

Dela stepped away from the old mare and crossed her arms over chest, peering into the bleak darkness and trying not to shiver. She'd definitely be glad when they got the fires lit so they could all return to the tents, dry off, warm up and eat. It'd been far too long of a day.

[Pools of Vayt] I Nuit would happen (Evalin)

Across the vast expanse of time there exists a horizon that very few can see. It is one that is ever changing, ever shifting, ever growing as each life begins and ends. Few can fathom the distance of eternity, and many who try are driven to insanity by the incompleteness of it all. For in eternity there is no end, no final stop, no destination, for no matter how far you travel there will always be a horizon.

A storm had indeed begun to gather upon the horizon, but this one stretched from the backward flow of eternity headed toward the darkest horizon in the distance, one filled with flaming land and starless skies...

*****

As the rain came down in sheets, Evailn found herself caught within it once more. She cursed to herself, pulling her cloak tighter about her, tilting her hood lower, as she kept her staff raised to keep it free from the mud.

"Be damned this weather. Never is it simply content to be well and good, but must bring with it each and every night a cascade of misery upon any who travel in this Gods forsaken place. As if the creatures of this land were not bad enough..."

Evalin shook her head, looking up as she navigated her way around another pool of tar. It was uncertain footing, and even the Immortal With, hailed by many names, feared what might happen should she slip and fall in. With careful movements Evalin made her way through the darkness and pelting rain, eyes of red gazing out at the expanse with grim determination until she spotted something quite convenient. A large tent, in a place such as this? It was odd to say the least (since coming to the Sea of Grass Evalin had met no other sentient life).

Without hesitation Evalin made for it, pushing through the rain with her staff held high, black cloak soaking as she stared from the darkness with eyes the color of freshly spilt blood, making directly for the girl and her strider.

Wretched Aura: As a Wretched One Evalin possesses an unnatural aura about her that causes unease in those who get too close. It can come as a prickle of the hair on the back of the neck, a sense of 'wrongness' about her. How people experience it is different depending on their personality and how they handle the unnatural and unknown. Animals tend to become more agitated, more easily sensing how wrong Evalin is and often avoiding contact with her.

Evalin was about to, and it might not be so pleasant an encounter...

Akajia was clearly in cahoots with Makutsi this night as Evalin slipped into the big tent. She was not seen entering, only after the fact when she came face to face with a young man, the first shadows of a beard visible on his face. He'd been holding a large pot from which the sweet tang of stew rose, the mix of herbs, broth, and vegetables blending sweetly with the hearty aroma of some kind of roast. However, said pot did not last long in his hands as the cloaked visage solicited a mortified shout from the young man, no more than a boy really. It fell from his hands with a loud clang and spillage of the teams evening meal.

He turned tail and ran in that instant, virtually squealing like a little girl. His father would never let him on these trips ever, ever again. He'd be left in the pavilion henceforth to wash pots for the rest of his miserable life. Such was the fate of poor young Mervin who ran screaming from the tent in the opposite direction, leaving the spare mounts for those Drykas who were unbonded unattended and the remains of the teams dinner slowly being absorbed by the blankets and other throws over the sodden ground...

From her place closest to the tent, Delani had straightened and whipped around on the mares back at the same time the horse had snorted in surprise, both rider and horse staring towards the shelter. Young Melvin came bolting out of that end and nearly collided with the striders backside in his escape attempt, screaming something about Dira having come for him and how he didn't want to die and that She could have the horses. "What the!? MELVIN STOP!" She called after the boy before he headed into the grass towards the nearest flicker of firelight.

"By all the...that boy will get himself killed for sure!" The horse beneath her snorted once and bobbed her head again in agreement.

Dismounting, Dela told the mare to stay put afterwards as she approached the tent, her hand on the pommel of the falx, ready to draw the long-handled pseudo-spear should this 'Dira' really be a night-lion. What she'd do about it, well...Delani had no idea. Maybe frighten it off if she could. Hopefully. Taking a deep breath, she touched flap and pushed it slowly aside, stepping in quietly and hoping it wasn't really Lady Death come for the team. It would have been a bad omen if it were the dark maiden.

The shelter of the tent brought some relief from the harsh elements that began to rage about the land. Stepping past a collection of beasts, Evalin shook out her clothing, letting droplets fall to the ground in a cascade as she looked about her new surroundings. Letting her red eyes adjust to the change of light, it was with some surprise that Evalin found herself faced with a youth with only the barest traces of manhood beginning to appear upon his chin. His eyes grew large, the pot in his hand shook until he lost his hold, shouting some nonsense that made Evalin's eyes narrow in annoyance. Pulling her hood lower Evalin watched the boy make haste to escape this vestige of his imagination.

"Youth today," Evalin mumbled, "Far too fragile and timid. If it be death then a true man would face it with pride and confidence. Perhaps he will soon die, but it will not be by my hand. Let the glassbeaks feast upon the cowards blood." Her words were coated with disdain as she followed slowly after the boy, his trail leading out of the tent. The sound of a woman's voice caught Evalin's attention, and her immortal eyes turned in the directions of the sound, tilting her head to one side as curiosity built. Moving forward, yet being certain she was still hidden by the shadows of the Pavillion, Evalin looked out to where she could see the child's fleeing back. There she saw her, a girl so young by comparison to herself. The strong look of a hard life written in her eyes, a powerful strider beside her. So unlike the boy, this one was brave as she now looked in the direction that some hidden danger she knew lay. Evalin smiled slowly, leaning on her staff as she watched the girl grow near. Stepping back as she drew closer, Evalin pressed herself deeper into the shadows, off to the side so that she would go unnoticed as the girl entered the tent. As she slowly passed Evalin would speak softly, little more than a whisper.

"Brave you are to face Lady Death. Far braver than that child was, though he shall not escape his inevitable end." Evalin looked out from the darkness of her hood, two shining points of red gazing upon the girl with renewed interest as she leaned on her staff. Her robes covered up every aspect of her form, her hands were pale as bone, thin as they wrapped around the wood of her staff that seemed to hold her up for support. Smiling into the darkness the Immortal continued, "Are you not afraid that your time has come...?"
