A Meal for Two (Iosha)

6th of Summer, 513

Surrounded by murmuring of guests and the laughter of one jolly chef, Eoin found that a smile was easy to come by. It was as though the Coastal Clam was made for the Avora, who preferred a relaxed and peaceful setting, particularly one so cozy and smelling of the sea. All along the walls were mementos from journeys, most from Chef Erwin's own but a few left behind by appreciative travellers, creating a museum out of the quaint restaurant. Of course, the Avora was not here for leisure, though now he would not mind revisiting the cheerful establishment in the future, but to answer the call for volunteers from the Valintar. Naturally, he drifted toward the culinary tasks and found himself here, under the supervision of one jocular chef.

"Nicely done, Eoin, though you should use a lighter hand." Grabbing a spoon, the Denvali born Inartan tasted the curry, pausing to decipher the flavours before nodding with approval. "Hmm..I just might have to steal you from Chef Davoid." The youthful man winked, eyes crinkling from his pearly smile as he returned the utensil. "Of course, don't tell her that, she's never forgiven me for that one incident with the hammer.." He trailed off, distracted as he walked off to speak to one of the customers before Letsi stepped in to usher the wandering chef back into the kitchens. Before he realized, his lips were already pulled into a soft smile. The owners radiated such a homely and welcoming energy that it noticeably lifted the spirits of every patron that stepped through their doors. And though it may seem insignificant to Erwin, Eoin was even pleasantly surprised by his compliment, for words of that sort were a rare if impossible occurrence from his female mentor. He did not mind Chef Davoid's firm teachings, understanding her severity more than most others for he was the same. Though others were intimidated by her, the Avora rarely felt such a sentiment. She was what he aspired to be ever since he was a Yasi, and so she could do no wrong. One could even say Eoin was a mini Chef Davoid, albeit a great deal more approachable.

Allowing the curry to sit a while longer, Eoin moved to retrieve a few clean plates from the one Dek assigned to wash dishes. Though curry itself was a simple recipe, it wasn't everyday that he got to work with Skygoat meat, which possessed a strong gamey flavour that worked well with the other ingredients of Chef Erwin's choice. The way this man went about preparing and delivering the exotic mutton differed completely from the methods he was taught, reminding the student that he could not limit himself to only the teachings of one. His desire to learn from chefs with different culinary backgrounds was a bit of a faraway dream of his, for Eoin could not envision himself leaving Wind Reach in his lifetime just to search abroad. Perhaps one day he would embark on the dangerous trek, but not a day in the near future.

Returning to his work, the Avora scooped up a few ladlefuls of the curry on to a clean plate before navigating the narrow path toward the customer. With the small restaurant so busy, the three Avora volunteers there, himself included, doubled as servers. Even with help, eventually it came to the point where ingredients were running low. With Eoin temporarily available, the choice was obvious. Armed with a large basket, the Inartan hurried toward the fields.

As soon as he arrived, Eoin went about his search, but having rarely visited the fields before, he was finding it difficult to locate specific ingredients from rows among rows of vegetables. Not wishing to waste any more time, he moved toward the nearest volunteer, intending to request aid.

"Excuse me." Pausing, he continued. "I'm looking for some spinach, turnips and po-" By now, the woman had turned around and stood facing a stunned Inartan. "…tatoes." Eoin closed his lips gently. Though his expression remained calm, the Avora was a bit embarrassed to be caught off guard by the other's appearance. With her pale features and shimmering scales, he was almost certain that this was a Konti he was speaking to. However, with his knowledge coming from the often outdated books of the Enclave, he thought it best to check. Jumping to the heart of the matter, he asked, curiosity faintly tinging his tone. "Are you by any chance, a Konti?"

A Meal for Two (Iosha)

The only reason Iosha volunteered to manage the work in the fields of Thunder Bay was to eventually go swimming in the nearby ocean, but the fields were no where near to being fully planted yet, and it was already the start of summer. Iosha walked through the fields, and she saw a Chiet digging the holes for the seeds way to deep. Iosha knelt down next to the round face woman and said softly in Nari,
“Seeds..down two.” The woman looked at her in confusion, so Iosha stuck up three fingers and started making the digging motion with her hand and repeated in Nari, “No. seeds ..down.. three. Yes..seed..down..two.” The red haired woman smiled at the Konti, and she started planting the seeds correctly. Iosha was given the duty of managing the planting of a wheat field, so she didn't have much time to watch every moment on the field. When the dek brought her a bag of seed, Iosha knelt down in her row and started to plant. Planting seeds were time consuming, but the hard part was being under the hot sun for hours at a time. Every two hours, she made her workers take a water and food break under a tree to escape the heat of the day. When the fifteenth chime break was over, she sent them back into the field to resume their work.

Taking her seed bag, she knelt down and struck her finger in the dirt till reached the second bend in the finger. When the hole was made, she dropped a seed into the hole, and covered it until it was completely buried. Iosha repeated the process over a five hundred times till she made it to the other side of the field. Iosha stood up and stretched her back and her arms. The Konti looked over her field and saw the management of the field less than perfect. She realized to herself that if she put the two dek and a chiet in charge of running seed bags and buckets of water to the planters than she wouldn't have to put a lot less stress on the deks. As She watched one of the dek runners, and she was moving fairly quickly on her deformed foot and hand. The girl was definitely smart and a quick learner, but the Inarta didn't care about her intelligence as much as her physical prowess in providing food for Wind Reach. It was sad fate for such a smart girl, but she wasn't in charge of assigning people to the caste system. Iosha called out to the dek girl, and said sharply, “Don't run to fast! It is to hot to work as quickly as you are!” Iosha didn't know if the girl heard her, but she looked like she was walking slower now.

Out of no where a man's voice took her by surprise, and Iosha turned around to see a handsome man with auburn hair standing in front of her with a basket in hand. The man started to ask her about turnips, spinach and potatoes were located, but Iosha knew it was to early in the season for them to be ready. If they were in the hydroponic garden, it would be another story, but out in the fields, he would have to wait till the end of season. Suddenly, the man halted his initial question and asked her if she was a konti. Iosha should have been used to it now, but the man's reaction to her appearance was cute, so she decided to answer with some playful teasing. Iosha ran a webbed hand through her sweaty hair and said softy with a smile, “Last time, I checked was a Konti, yes.” Iosha decided to answer his original question, “The fields were just being planted accept for mine, so you will have to wait till autumn to harvest. I not sure about the spinach. Don't quote me, but I think you can harvest it two times in a season, and maybe the turnips too.” Iosha started to giggle stupidly as she continued her rambling, “For somebody who works in the hydroponic garden, I should be up to date on my plant knowledge. Shouldn't I?” Iosha's cheeks turned red in embarrassment when she realized that she was rambling about plants to the man. The Konti thought to herself, “Shut up you sound like a sea lion right now!” Iosha looked down at the ground to hide her face, and said softly, “If you need them right away, you should head to the hydroponic gardens.”

A Meal for Two (Iosha)

Unused to teasing in general, Eoin felt another layer of embarrassment joining the last, though thankfully his demeanour showed little change. With the number of foreigners he had met as a Yasi, one would think the Inarta knew what a Konti looked like, though understandably, he was unfortunate in that the one race he wished to meet the most never seemed to arrive at the stony doors. Why the Konti exactly? Their cuisine, of course, for little else preoccupied the Avora's mind for long aside from his passion. Much like the Inarta, the Konti lived off the sea, sharing more similarities than expected in their diet. Ever since a traveller raved about her trip to the the Konti Isle, particularly of their diverse and creative cuisine, the young man became a bit obsessed with learning more. Here was an opportunity he could not let slip. Though he listened attentively as the woman offered her help, at the same time somewhat disappointed in his lack of knowledge in the seasons of plants, only one thought monopolized him.

Tactless as he was, Eoin was unaffected by the woman's giggles, not quite understanding the cause in the first place. The blushing of course flew over his head as well, leaving Eoin to believe that the Konti was merely weary from Syna's relentless gaze. Though one may think he were unobservant for these cues went unnoticed, this was far from the truth. Already he had taken in the woman's appearance, from noticing her webbed hands as well and the mark of Rak'Keli on her forearm, to the way she glanced at her surroundings. Of course he only guess at the mark, having seen a similar design on Aidara.

"Apologies. I did not want to be mistaken." His eyes were a frank green, taking her playful words seriously and playing it safe by assuming her offence. Obviously, humour did not come naturally to Eoin. "Thank you for the help." Though she did not seem confident in her knowledge, it certainly bettered his own understanding, and so he took her advice and planned to head to the gardens quickly. However, before then he needed to ensure that she would not be lost to him.

"Could I ask a favour of you?" He paused, ensuring that he had her full attention before continuing. "I would love to learn of Konti cuisine from you, if you have the time." Hearing his own words, Eoin was unconvinced, and tacked on: "In exchange, I could offer a taste of home."

Iosha was thankful that the man didn't seemed to have a clue about her behavior, and she regained her composure. The young man made a quick apology for being rude, and she said seriously,
“Yes, I am a Konti, and I was born in Mura.” The konti knew she had a bad habit of never taking anything seriously, and it tends to confuse people from time to time with her jokes. She might have been hanging around Kovac too long, so decided not to confuse or scare the young man away without getting to know him first. Iosha felt the wind start to pick up, and she nodded and said to him, “No problem if you are not exposed to growing plants. It is sometimes hard to gauge when it is the right time to harvest them.” She looked at the man, and she was curious if he was ever in a garden before, and she asked with a smile, “What is your name? My name is Iosha.” Iosha started to wonder how much exposure to outsiders the man had during his life. The konti wouldn't have been surprised if he haven't had any experience because Wind Reach was quite isolated from the rest of the world.

Iosha looked up and smiled at the copper haired man, and she thought about his proposal of teaching him konti's cooking for a meal made by him. Iosha gave him a wide friendly smile at the thought of him cooking for her. In truth, Iosha always thought she was a horrible cook, and her grandmother was convince her granddaughter had the uncanny ability to burn water. However, Iosha did know of some simple dishes, but she didn't know if the fish market in Thunder Bay would have the right type of meat. Still smiling, Iosha asked softly, “I would love to, but I should tell my workers. They have the rest of the day off. Unless you can wait a bell till we finish planting the field?” The konti knew their was only about a hour left of work, but she doesn't want to get yelled at for skipping out on her duties either. It wasn't professional, and she didn't want her worker thinking she was taking advantage of them. In a spare of the moment thought, Iosha brushed the hair from her eyes and ask to him, “If you like to help me plant the rest of the field, I could teach you a few simple recipes from my homeland when we are done.” Iosha remembered her grandmother did all the cooking, but she often helped her cut the vegetables and removed the meat from the shell fish. Iosha said with a smile feeling her stomach ache over the anticipation of having a meal from her native island again. Iosha smirked at him and said softly, “I hope you enjoy seafood because it is one of the main portions of our pallet.”

A Meal for Two (Iosha)

With every reaction quickened with growing excitement, he replied readily. "Eoin. A pleasure to meet you Iosha." And a pleasure it was, as his sincere tone would suggest. Though the Avora was hardly on edge, for his usual pace inspired impatience in others, he seemingly gained a quick tongue and mind if for the moment. As the Konti lifted her chin to face him, lips crescent and eyes gently crinkling, he found himself acting as a mirror, albeit with less pronunciation. It was an intriguing sight, to see the shimmering of scales framing a pleasant expression, as though the seas themselves smiled upon him. A bit of an exaggeration perhaps, but at the very least, Eoin did feel somewhat refreshed.

"Of course." Reminded of her responsibilities, he naturally agreed, for he would not dodge his duties even for the sake of studying Konti cuisine. Reliability to Eoin was unquestionable and as sure as the changing of seasons. It was what both burdened and drew others to him. To them, he was a rock amidst the rapids, an immovable force when combined with that trademark stubbornness. That was why when Iosha asked for his assistance, the Avora declined with little hesitation. "I would love to help, but I am already assigned to the Coastal Clam today." He spoke frankly, despite a deceptively warm gaze, the green of his eyes gently reflecting the deep violet of her own. Then, not wishing to sour their deal, he suggested. "Perhaps another time?" Much like the stagnant rock, Eoin was not one to bend to the will of others, unchanging unless forced or through gradual erosion.

With her last remark, a small smile haunted his lips. More than the coincidence, it was the small opportunity to speak about his passion that encouraged the sentiment. "Inarta often do. Our meat, such as whale, is mainly from the bay. It is more filling than other foods." For a city that teetered on starvation, filling was almost a requirement. And for Eoin, this was already edging on rambling, and with time already spent on conversing with the Konti, he decided to stop while he was ahead. If Iosha was interested, he could always teach her a thing or two about cooking later.

"Shall we meet at the Coastal Clam in a bell then?" Though Eoin would not mind returning to the fields, he thought that perhaps Iosha would prefer resting in the shade of the restaurant. This was a bad habit of his, in forgetting that others were not privy to his thoughts and instead, vocalizes only the most necessary information. To the Konti, he may seem firm and unyielding, which was true, but the Avora means well.

Iosha understood that Eoin couldn't abandoned his duties at the restaurant to help her with the garden, so the konti gave him a smile and said softly,
“Understandable, I wouldn't want to abandon my duties either. I will meet you at the restaurant in a bell. Oh it is a pleasure to meet you too, Eoin.” Iosha looked out over her field and saw the workers had a half-hour left of planting, so she figure finish the field and clean up before heading to the restaurant. Iosha put her hands behind the small of her back, and she watched the handsome young man leave. She gave herself a secret grin and turned back to her workers. She picked up her bucket of seeds and walked back to the last eighth of field and started to plant. When the field was finished, Iosha wiped the sweet from her head and said to all the workers, “Great job everyone! We finished ahead of schedule, so why don't you all take the rest of the day off, relax, and enjoy the summer day. After we clean up our equipment.” She looked at the dek manure runners too and said with a smile to them, “The bay should be warm today too, so you two should clean yourself up and relax too.”

When Iosha finished cleaning her equipment, she decided to clean off her face, arms, and hands of dirt in a nearby pond. She looked into clear water and saw her hair was a mess, so she undid her pony tail and brushed out the gnarls out of her white hair, and she changed into her clean pair of white bryda and vanti. She smiled at herself when she was finished, stood up, and made her way to the Coastal Clam. Iosha never been to the Clam before, so she was quite excited to try the food and talk to one of the chefs in the restaurant about her peoples food. The konti was in a good mood as she strolled down the coastal cities street, and she smiled to herself when she saw fisherman bring cart loads of fish to the processing center. The occasional foreigner walking around the town looking confused in their eastern dress. The port seemed quite busy today since the post must have at least ten tall ships docking and unloading cargo. It was great feeling being by the ocean again, and she hoped to one day buy a home down her to spend the spring and summer in Thunder Bay.

When Iosha made it to the Coastal Clam, the restaurant was packed with Inarta and foreigners alike. The patio seemed to be bustling with people trying to enjoy the warm summer day. The drinks were flowing and the food looked fanatic. Iosha hoped the Chef Eoin had something tasty in mind of supper as she opened the door and walked into the main room. The restaurant was packed with couples as the konti could tell the restaurant seemed to be a popular date spot for the people of Wind Reach. Iosha walked up to the hostess and asked in a soft voice, “My name is Iosha, and I was told to meet Eoin here.” The hostess smiled at her and said softly, “I will send a waiter back to fetch him for you.” She reached out and tapped the man on the bare shoulder and said something in Nari. Iosha watched the exchange and smirked to herself when she heard all the variants of whistling, Iosha decided to stand by a pot of flowers while she waited for the Eoin to arrive.

A Meal for Two (Iosha)

Postby Eoin on July 14th, 2013, 6:54 pm

Pleased that they were in agreement, he returned the slightest nod before turning to leave, his mind racing with ideas. Though Eoin found daily fulfillment in cuisine, it had been sometime since he was so excited, evidenced only by the faintest glint of the eye. Naturally, the foreign sentiment perturbed the Avora and in reaction, he attempted to suppress the desire as though the thought alone could poison his mind.

In short time, the cook returned to the Clam, quick to jump back into his role as he informed the others of the situation. Making due with missing ingredients, Eoin substituted the lightness of spinach by adding lemon to the surrounding sauce, reducing the buttery heaviness in using the acidity of the juice. Though it was not precisely what the customer asked for, after such a long wait, she hardly cared. Digging in enthusiastically, the Svefra was surprised by the complex textures of the dish that delighted her tastebuds with its variety. Quick to forgive (and whimsical) like most of her kind, she gave the bright haired chef a brief compliment and a wink to boot, the latter thoroughly confusing Eoin as he carried the near clean dishes away.

Nearly a bell later, he began to prepare for Iosha arrival, clearing remaining orders with controlled urgency. The Avora was careful not to neglect any one dish, adhering strictly to his belief of quality over quantity. The other cooks sensed his drive and found themselves inadvertently helping, leaving him a great deal of time in the end. Having worked for the better half of a day, the cook was coated in built up sweat despite his best efforts, resulting in a subsequent trip down to the bay. There, Eoin found a hidden area surrounded by the rocks, peeling cloth from skin as he laid his bryda to dry. The bare Inarta then walked waist deep into the waters, emitting a soft sigh as his soaring temperature began to drop. Lightly scarred hands then worked their way up the body, rubbing aching muscle in vague circular motions. Bending, he splashed both face and hair, shaking off the droplets before wet combing the copper locks with his fingers. By then, his clothing had nearly dried, so all that was left was to dry himself off. Thankful for the cover provided by the location, Eoin stepped ashore. With the heat, three chimes was all it took, allowing the Avora to step into a pant leg just as two Deks wandered into his makeshift bath. Wide-eyed, the not so graceful Inarta nearly tripped over himself, but managed to regain balance before his clumsiness was made apparent. Thoroughly embarrassed, he could only continue dressing as the drudges looked away in fear, their thoughts rampant with possible repercussions. Though he wished to reassure the two intruders, Eoin was choked up as he walked past, his ears a telltale crimson.

With his pace quickened, the Avora soon returned the familiar restaurant, revelling in the security of its walls. Realizing he was early, Eoin decided to continue work in the kitchens, giving a hand to the cooks that remained. Mostly, he helped serve, though occasionally he plated a dish or two. That was where he was summoned by a gentle tap, interrupting his constant readjustment of a single piece of parsley. "A Konti is here to see you." The waiter informed, a corner of his lip raised in amusement.

Escaping the heat of the kitchens, Eoin wiped sweating palms against the side of his bryda, finding himself a bit nervous. He wanted to make up for a lacking first impression with a more composed demeanour, though he was still a bit unsettled by the incident by the bay. Ignoring the fading red of his ears and the dampness of his hair, he straightened and approached the pale lady. "Welcome to the Coastal Clam." He spoke with that trademark warmth, his Common oddly fluent. Having heard the phrase spoken all day long, Eoin could not help but to pick up on the stretched vowels and the slower pace, not that he was aware of the improvement in pronunciation.

"So, where do we start?"

Additional Comments:Eoin-Feel free to resubmit this for grading if/when you return!

Iosha- I awarded agriculture instead of gardening because of the type of work being done, however you don't have many points in gardening and none in agriculture so I wanted to make sure you got a start in the latter if you want Iosha participating more in the fields and gardens around Wind Reach. Just be careful playing above your skill level here. Novice agriculture/gardening would only know the basics (how to dig a hole and put a seed in and how to water it, how much sunshine it will need) of planting and harvesting. They probably wouldn't know much about specific plants yet. If you're really interested in Iosha increasing this particular genre of her skills (herbalism, gardening, agriculture) I'd be happy to help you out with some moderated threads, if you'd like.

If you have any questions regarding your grade, feel free to PM me and we can discuss it!

Write on,

~Harrier
