The Perfumed Cloisters For the Eypharians, beauty is a moral imperative. One must either be beautiful or wealthy enough to obtain people and adornments that are. The wealthier women of the city keep a coterie of attendants for the purpose of beautification. For those who want a little something more than their usual toilette or those who do not have their own cadre of servants, there is the Perfumed Cloisters: a bathhouse, perfumery and sensual treat. Talented masseuses will massage the body with sweet smelling oils, attendants offer healing or beautifying baths, and a resident perfumer will concoct a personal scent just for the client. Fresh fruit, wine, water and tea are served without reservation. The structure is small, dimly lit and divided into various rooms. The building is made of sandstone with rounded corners and marble floors. Most client will only see the first and second foyer and their room. The first foyer is an enclosed courtyard with a rare water garden of lotuses at its center. An attendant sits in front of the main cedar doors, sheets of wadj in her hands. After an initial interview, a box of palm wood is given to the visitor who is then allowed through the doors. In the second foyer, clients wait on chaises or in piles of pillows while eating and drinking. The room is round with a celestial design painted on the domed ceiling. An attendant will come fetch the visitor and lead them down low warm halls to their final room, which always contains a bath. Here the client will be soothed and pampered as only Eypharians can. |
