Summer, Day 58, 513 AV

"Big," Vanari whispered to herself as she stared up at the main gates of Syliras. At long last, she was finally here. Five years ago, this would have seemed impossible, a mere fantasy on the fringes of her wildest dreams. Now, she was standing here in person, about to enter one of the most glorious civilizations of Mizahar.

"Oi! Done letting that head of yours float in the clouds, lass?"

The Vantha snapped out of her reverie and stammered an apology. "S--sorry, Lady Knight." Great Morwen, a real Syliran Knight!

"That's Sera to you, and step forward if you wish to pass. We don't have all day."

The knight looked closely at her eyes, belongings, and even under her fingernails. "Alright, you may pass. Just stick to the rules and make yourself useful. Got that?"

"Yes!" she shouted a bit too loudly. "Er--Sera!"

The knight sighed and shook her head. "Go on, then."

Vanari nodded eagerly, gave her thanks, and went merrily on her way.

58th of Summer, 513 AV

Ardea trundled along in the caravan tracks, her frame worn with fatigue. Disgruntled, she complained loudly in her own mind about how she'd had to travel such a long way in human form, so that she could carry all of her possessions, she was itching to shift and had been ever since she'd left. Lifting her heavy gaze, she was mildly surprised and relieved to see that the city gates had grown so close. Somehow, a weak smile managed to force its way onto her face and a sense of purpose found her once more.

As she approached the heavily guarded gates, her excitement turned into apprehension, she hated guards, they imposed upon her freedom. But if she were to live here for a while, she'd have to get used to their presence. Aggression bubbled up within her as she grew nearer to them, but she managed to make herself appear indifferent as they inspected her and her belongings. As they sifted carelessly through her belongings, she became more and more irritated until, at last, the knight waved her through.

Zoe swayed in her saddle as Grace, her windrunner horse, trotted up to the gates. Shifting her heavy backpack, Zoe twitched, itching to shift. She had been unable to on the ride here, and was anxious. Up ahead two guards stood outside the gates. When she got close enough they signaled her to stop. They checked her horse, and then proceeded on to Zoe.

"You look a little tired there lass," one of the nights said, noticing the dark circles under her eyes. She returned the smile and they waved her through. Hooves clicked against the ground. Tired eyes watched all the activity as Zoe headed towards the sign marked Traveler's Row.

10th of Autumn

The sky was cloudy and bleak, it seemed to mirror the man's mood. He dragged himself through each step, slowed by hesitation. Was he ready to enter the city that his mother spoke of so fondly? More importantly, would he be haunted by her memory?

He lifted his head, swinging the satchel at his side farther down his back as he peered at the gates yonder. They almost seemed to blend in to the sky, although the brick was a slightly darker shade of the harrowing gray that now followed him everywhere.

The lone traveler approached the gate, his jaw locked in determination. But his determination was hollow. For the first time that he could remember, he knew what 'alone' really meant. It was cold, even under the coat that hung from his shoulders. Yet he soldiered on, his deep eyes hardening.

He was close, now, his heart pounding through his chest. His hands curled into fists, and he stormed his way to the front gate, stopping only for the armored man with an outstretched arm. Silently, he began inspecting Rhyn. It took a couple moments for him to finish, before flagging him inside.

Rhyn laid a palm against the door, took a deep breath, and pushed the door open. He froze a moment, half because he was surprised at how light the door was, and half because he was second-guessing himself.

Again with a locked jaw, he set his first foot across the barrier that would change his fate.

[Syliras Location] The Main Gates

Postby Khepri on October 4th, 2013, 8:01 pm

5th of Autumn, 513AV

It was lightly raining and her thin clothes she had on would have been fine in the hot weather of Ahnatep but here it was just miserable and clung to her body.

"Finally, I'm here"

Since turning 21 in the spring, buying her freedom and travelling on that accursed trade ship, Khepri long last made it to Syliras. She wanted to get as far away as she could (without going to Avanthal) from Ahnatep and the memories that clung to the city like a bad smell. Time for new memories and new beginnings.

Khepri approached the giant ironoak gate and was stopped by one of the infamous Sylirian Knights.

"State your business, Eypharian."

Khepri dug around in her mind trying to remember her lessons in common. "Seeking living quarters and employment." she said while crossing her top two arms, wishing this interrogation would go faster. Khepri was cold and soaked to the bone.

"You are seeking the Welcome and Employment Office then. Be on your way and obey the laws."

Khepri gave a fake smile and nod of head and walked through the gates.

[Syliras Location] The Main Gates

Postby Mac on October 7th, 2013, 1:14 am

Fall 5, 513

(OOC I hope it's OK that she is entering via the docks, as she came by ship)

MacMac stood on the deck, silently watching as they drew closer to the docks. The sails were reefed for now. The ship that had brought her from Alvadas by capturing the power of the winds now must allow itself to be towed dociley by the two jolly boats ahead, so that it didn’t come crashing fast into the wooden piers of the harbor. Emerald eyes were taking in the sight of the great walled city, if not exactly wide in awe then at least filled with a certain amount of respect for the work of the reimancers that had built it, or so she supposed. MacMac didn’t know a great deal about her new home-to-be, other than that it was governed by a league of knights, and was fairly open to any and all who wished to enter, if they be peace minded. And despite the bow slung across her back, the young pink haired woman had no aspiration to foment rebellion or discontent here, or to do mischief or murder or mayhem. She only wanted to stretch her young legs, so to speak, and see what lay over the hedge. Syliras seemed a reasonable place to begin, as it was relatively easy to access from her home city, across the Suvan Sea. It might well be the only place she ever ventured to. Perhaps she would find being away from her home, her mother, and her grandfather too lonely. Perhaps she would hate the somewhat claustrophobic looking mountain of a city. Perhaps she would love it and never wish to leave. Only time would tell.

Her hand stroked idly atop the hard, soft head of Nehru, who, even seated beside her, came up to her ribs. He whined a bit. Being on the ship had not been to his liking whatsoever and the dog was more than ready to debark. The sight of land had him excited. “Yep, we’re almost there, boy,” MacMac said quietly, her eyes going to give him a reassuring smile to accompany the pat, and then switching back to look at the imposing city that she would now call home, for a while anyway.

“Almost there,” she repeated softly, wondering what this adventure was going to bring her.

Nilika stared up at the main gates. They were huge. She stepped back a little. She looked down at all her belongings, she made sure that had everything and waited her turn to enter.

She was almost in front of the line. quite happy and amazed. There was a real Syliras Knight right there, she only heard about them from her grandma. As she walked, she did one of the most embarrassing thing for her. She fell flat out on her face. Tears started to form in her eyes but didn't fall from there.

Everyone was looking at her. Her pale cheeks started to turn red. This was so embarrassing. A tanned hand came into view. "Are you alright," asked a young man. Nilika nodded and was going to grab his hand, then she remembered. "Remember Nilika. Just cause they don't seem sad, doesn't mean they aren't," Kia said to her before she left home. She snatched her hand to her chest.

The man looked at her oddly. He rose back to his height and waited her to stand. She stood up and wrapped her cloak around her tightly. The man let her proceed through the gates. Nilika looked back at the knight after she went through the gate. Maybe she would see that knight around, or maybe not.

[Syliras Location] The Main Gates

Postby Milartek on October 24th, 2013, 10:06 am

1st Fall 513AV late afternoon

The first thing that Milartek thought was how impressive the city looked. Even from a distance you could tell it was vast. His own home, Riverfall, was an impressive sight but this was even larger, something that both exited and daunted the young warrior.

He had been travelling with a group of merchants, who had seemed glad of his presence. During the journey they told tales of how Drykas raiders had been taking people from their homes and families, for purposes they did not understand. It all seemed a bit barbaric to Milartek, and not in the nature of most of the Drykas he had ever encountered.

around midday they had set up a final camp to take stock of their wares and organize everything before they crossed into the great city. however, impatient to get there Milartek had left them and forged on until he now arrived in front of the great gates, on top of his horse.

Milartek was not an experienced rider, and before the journey he had not sat on as horse for longer than half a bell, so needless to say he was sore, tired and fed up of being on horseback. He had fallen off more times than he cared remember, his back was stiff because he couldn't get used to the horses movements and his thighs were sore with rubbing.

However none of that mattered now. He was here.

Two knights, both looking rather impressive, approached him and asked him to state his business.

"My name is Milartek I have made the long journey from Riverfall to visit your great city. I intend to stay here a while and hope to prove of some use to the city and I can assure you i mean no trouble here".

Seeming happy with his reply the guards welcomed him through, giving him directions as to were to stable his horse and to a place called travelers row were they assured him he could find lodgings.

Altaira's bones held a dull pain. She'd pressed herself far too hard on the journey, though her kelvic blood had at least meant that she was able to sleep soundly and safely in the trees at night. When she saw the tall gates of Syliras, even from a large distance, she was struck with the thoughts of home.

The castle had the same hulking look that Avanthal carried, but the crisp climate of the place had it all the more welcoming that the wintry trap she was so used to. She pressed her lips into a fine line, and kept her head up ahead of the caravan. She'd managed to convince them to allow her to accompany them. It wasn't not to much of a stretch, she had found, especially given she was able to talk up her eye sight and hearing, and floored one of the previous guardsmen when he made a slight of her appearance. Rather than actively defend the caravan, her job was to warn of impending danger, which, lucky for them, hadn't occurred.

When she reached the gates she glanced back, and the head merchant gave her a dismissive wave - her job was done. There was movement behind her, a quiet, impatient shuffling, and she moved toward the mighty gate's two knight guardsmen with speed - not willing to upset them further. "You with the caravan?" The first asked, his gaze hard and expression stoic.
"No, no," She said, clearing her tangled hair from her face - humans liked knowing everything about a potential threat, and she wasn't about to be skinned for hiding her appearance."I accompanied them as a guardsman of sorts, yes," She flashed her yellow-amber eyes, ensuring to make eye contact with both guards, and clearly showing her assets, "But our business is separate."

The second man eyed her, and she felt suspicion rise against her, settled only by the kinder look of the second man. "And what would your business be?"
"Work and an extended stay," She dipped her head to the right, parroting the movement she saw so many 'innocent' human girls do, "I'm a kelvic herbalist, please, you needn't worry - I'll be on my best behaviour. In fact, if you could point me towards some cheap lodgings..." She could hear the small caravan rattle closer, and the first guard gave them a somewhat bothered look in that direction. On the journey in she'd noticed a small gathering out side of the gates, but it had cleared long before they had arrived. Extra measures for caravans, she supposed, and gave the guards an apologetic smile.

"In you go, then." The first said coolly, leaving it to the second to give the directions requested. "The Traveler's Row would suit you best, its only just within the gates. You'll find it easily."
Altraira summoned her most human mannerisms, and gaze a short curtsy. Was it weird to do that? She surely hoped not. Being a kelvic bought up to move and speak as human and polite as possible, she was always rather astounded by how uncouth many of the kind actually were. "Thank you. And please, enjoy the rest of your watch." With that, she slipped in. First order of business: find that inn.

[Syliras Location] The Main Gates

Postby Vik on November 4th, 2013, 7:55 am

Fall 25, 513 A.V.; 13 Bells 21 Chimes

Image
There was always that rather interesting smell of leaves decomposing and the very air vibrating with the hum of frantic activity from birds, tree rodents; and especially small animals like rabbits and foxes; of which he was sure they were foxes- maybe... There were times he really wished he'd listened to his father about this sort of thing. Really, being ignorant of the difference between a chicken and a pheasant was not the most intripid thing that the man had ever liked to admit. Albeit; with the slow grind of the Caravan he was with; it was honestly a boring bout of rather lackadaisical luck. Well, as boring as overland trips got; bandits, slavers; the occasional angry monstrous; but rather mundane, beast.

He had a rather, enjoyable time with the Caravaneers who wished to part ways up ahead. While he was heading toward the city proper; these fellows were heading off toward the mountains themselves. Not all that odd; albeit he didn't really know what was there, he could only guess- because one who cannot put two and two together tends to die horrifically; that there was a town with more in it for them to sell to. The caravan drivers and Vik parted ways without so much as a farewell. They knew the likely hood of well wishing was so minute that it would be just silly to wish it.

From his estimate; as he had been down this road almost, goodness- in his short life he'd been down it about three times total; always with a caravan and always with more than just himself. While he knew he was probably only about half an hour away- he still was wary even though the forest seemed somewhat tame compared to what could certainly have been a gnarled and frightening fen. So; onward he went; his mule being half-pulled half-guided along the path.

He was thankful for the old girl's help- she kept him from carrying all of his food-stuffs and really that was something only a man who appriciated economy could really want. All his supplies and; as he was not in the company of men who he was sure would steal his pipeweed? It was such a time- as he decided- for a bit of pipe-weed, he was slow to start the flame that fanned within the pipe itself- he knowing well enough that the pipe would need to insure a slow- hearty burn.a spark ignited within. He pupped and puffed the fluted mouth of his long-stemmed pipe. Before exhaling through his nose. No smoke yet; but- that said. He just went along his business.

Pipe-weed jar settled back in the mule's pack; fire starter settled to where he could gather it once more; he merely glanced toward where he was going every once in a while; following the road down to the heart of Humanity.

The leaves that crunched under his feet made things all the more fun; the half an hour of movement saw many who might be travelers; caravans; or other things that made him have to walk near the 'ditch' as it were. But, he didn't really care. Kicking up leaves and humming- off key, a rather jaunty tune, smoking like a steamer all the way. It was a strange sight for such a small, seemingly happy; man to be walking along one of the only roads in the known world. But, the scent of kline; the tanned skin, and the obvious obliviousness to the world at large got him dismissed from most attention.

For which he was thankful for when he did actually lose track of what he was seeing and hearing. The city now loomed like a dark blight upon the sky itself; albeit, one that spoke to the primal beasty within his heart. It was big, and he liked it! Syralias, he remembered many things his father called this place 'a home all men know of' and 'where fools tread'. He didn't understand why his father thought of such crass, mean-spirited things but; even so he didn't question old words from a long-dead man. As the gates appeared and loomed upward- he just had to take his pipe free to look up. It was beautiful, in a traditional sense that just wrought itself of humanity's pragmatic view; heavy fortification around a fortress-city. That was an intelligent move.

State your buisiness in the city and how long you intend to stay. What would have been a voice was drowned out by Vik's own imaginings; 'I have got to get on top one day; just to see out and around. My father's eyes be cursed this place could not possibly be anything bad.' The process of his mind was working on just how he'd be able to find a roof- and maybe the acrobatic skill to climb up and around there. The view must be breath taking and he would have such a thing!

So lost in his thoughts was he, that; when his mule recoiled back he snapped out of his reverie. It wasn't a blade or anything; but; still, there was a rather- stern, looking person... Who; he... Wasn't exactly sure of the gender of. They were slim, the waist was slightly tapered and the hips weren't narrow... But, still; his flabbergasted expression got a sigh of annoyance before the person, likely having said something before hand- spoke once more.

State your buisiness in the city and how long you intend to stay.” The, now obviously male, guardsman stated- once again- with a firm; authoritative tone that almost caused Vik's cheek to twitch but, he suppressed this with closed eyes and a wily smile.

The opening of one eye and speaking in a slightly slurred; but- quite eloquent voice- while leaning forward in a mildly mocking respect; even as he held his pipe to the side as to avoid dumping out it's contents, “S'name's Vik; m'not wiff a traden'type people; they'd all gone off t'the main mountain o'er there.” He paused, before- realizing that he was still bent at the waist and stood up firmly. Before taking a puff of the pipe; he, well, had explained well enough he thought.

You still haven't said why you're here.” Prompted the second guard, who got a bemused look; the man just giving a humorless stare back before Vik's mental process slowly turned the small wheel in his head; he then made a low 'Ooooh' sound, before nodding his head in mild vigor.

Ah! Yeah-yeah-yeah 'pletely'fergottabout that... Employ! Mostly, yannow, needa job t'train an fight an eat right?” This, explaination- which he could tell was annoying the two Knights as the gate; just, got a look between the two- before he was guided into the gate proper; then, with a mildly annoyed sounding grumble- the second Knight just pointed- to a rather painfully obvious building.

There's the Employ Office and Greeting Center, you will want to head there first. ” The knights got a rather lazy wave and thank you as the man strolled on toward the offices. To which, the first of the guards just shook his head slowly, “... I feel sorry for the employment office at the moment.

Meanwhile, in Vik's perspective- the offices themselves were a likely good source of a place to sit- so, he was more than happy to head toward them. His booted feet and armored shins made for a rather odd contrast to the rather worn pants and vest- it was an interesting combination; albeit one that didn't scream winter-preparedness. But, then again; it was the summer... Right?

… Oh, no; wait- it's the Fall. This just got him a bit more on the down and out thought process. It had been nearly a year's traveling- a year. He'd really rather not repeat this trip more than a couple of more times.

'Joy, the older I get the longer this shyke takes. Well, I'd better get some employ- or I'll end up unable to support myself; and I hate being accosted.' The offices were mere feet away.

Hello Syralias~
