18th Summer 513AV

It had been a long time since Nate had gotten any free time for himself. The past few months, heck the past half a year, had been hard for the young man. His mother Natalia had been ill, and not just the normal kind of ill. One of the Frostfawn Hold's primary falconers had almost died.

Nate had pretty much given up all of his spare time to look after his mother. He had been hunting in the Reaches during every spare moment he had. The boy had to bring in even more money than usual to pay for her medicine on top of food for himself. Ascha had pretty much abandoned him too; a group of youngsters had taken to looking after the dog for him.

A few weeks ago Natalia had started to recover, much to the great relief of Nate and his Hold. Day by day she was getting stronger and as a result, Nate had finally been able to find an afternoon to do what he wanted to do.

As it was, the young man was now sitting on the fence that surrounded the archery range. It had been a long time since he had practised here, though thankfully he had not been short of targets due to his extra hunting. He had left his shorbow at home though; he didn't feel like shooting today. He simply stared at the ground as if waiting for pictures or words to appear before him.

Sheva didn't feel like going hunting today, infact she didn't feel like doing anything really. She was feeling unusually lonely during the past few days, it had been a while since she'd spoken to anyone, the last being the peculiar young man named Meville.

As Sheva wandered around the city of Avanthal aimlessly, she found herself being pulled toward the archery range, it made sense, she often went there to relieve herself of any pent up stress. The range was one of a few places that reminded Sheva of a friend she hadn't seen in a long, long time. The young man had seemingly disappeared into thin air without so much as a goodbye and although Sheva knew she needed to move on, she couldn't bring herself to leave Avanthal.

The young woman made her way towards the range, snow white hair dancing in the breeze, her quiver and bow on her back and her sky blue eyes directed at her feet as they stepped through the snow. As the range came into view, Sheva raised her head scanning the area for any fellow archers and that's when she saw him.

Her eyes met with an all too familiar figure, one she had never thought she'd see again. There, sitting on the fence, seemingly engrossed in whatever lie below was...

"Nate..."

The words escaped her mouth as the tiger kelvic stood there several feet away from the young man. She didn't move as her sky blue eyes watched him, waiting for him to raise his head so she could see those beautiful sea-foam green eyes that she'd been missing for so long.

Tiny flakes of soft white snow had begun to fall since Nate had first perched himself on the fence surrounding the archery range. They were rather sparse however; it didn't look like the little flurry would last for very long. He felt pinpricks of cold as they landed in his arms, and then the trickles of water as they immediately melted.

The young man continued his staring match with the ground, deep in thought. He wondered if he would see anyone of relevance to him today. It had been a long time since had properly seen any of his friends. A few had occasionally dropped by to see how he and his mother were doing, and sometimes he ran into them on the streets, but he had never had time for real conversations. Brief snippets had been exchanged however; a couple of people he knew had married, and one close friend had left the city a while back.

The breeze that was gently ruffling the young man's hair carried a sound to his ears. It was a voice, a single word softly spoken. Nate snapped his head up as he heard his name, spoken by someone he hadn't seen in an age.

He turned his head, sea-foam eyes searching for the girl. He found her quickly, her bright blue eyes locking with his. A smile quirked at the corners of his mouth and he let himself slide from his perch, feet landing in the snow with a gentle thud. He made his way over to stand before her, the tiny smile still on his lips.
"Sheva."
His head tilted to one side before he continued. "I thought you'd be gone by now." That small smile was still present indicating his obvious happiness that she was still around.

Sheva couldn't believe it was him, but sure enough, as her sky blue eyes met with his sea-foam green ones her doubts disappeared and were replaced by questions. She hadn't seen him in such a long time and he had disappeared without explanation, why? Dozens of questions and thoughts ran through her mind in a fraction of a second.

She tried in vain not to smile as the young hunter hopped down and began walking toward her, wanting to make him understand that she wasn't happy with the way he'd left things, but the moment she saw his smile her own followed. Once he reached her he said her name clearly happy to see her again and Sheva lifted her arms to hug him but quickly stopped herself not wanting to make him uncomfortable.

He pointed out that he'd thought she had left Avanthal, which answered most of her own questions pertaining to his absence. "I couldn't bring myself to leave, especially not alone." she said honestly. "What about you? You just disappeared into thin air, what happened?" she asked although her tone held more concern than anything else. All the while the smile never left her face.

Nate could see the girl's eyes flickering with emotion and he didn't doubt that his were doing the same. He noticed the smile that reluctantly broke over her face, and the way her arms lifted towards him. Nate reached out and pulled her to him in a brief, friendly hug.
"We'll I'm glad you didn't leave."

The concern in Sheva's voice counteracted the smile she still wore. Nate rubbed the back of his neck as he decided how best to answer her. "Well...it was my mother. She got really sick. She nearly died." Nate gave a tiny shrug of his shoulders. "I had to look after her. I couldn't leave her just in case. And I had to do extra work. You have no idea how expensive medicine is." There was a pleading, almost apologetic tone to his voice. He desperately wanted her to know that he didn't abandon her.

"She's much better now. Still weak, but I don't have to be there anymore." he gave Sheva a small smile. "So, what about you, what have you been doing with yourself?"

Sheva's smile brightened ever so slightly as Nate pulled her into a short embrace, the familiar scent of the young man hadn't changed. He went on to tell her that he was pleased that she was still here which only served to make her even more happy.

She immediately recognised the uncertainty portrayed by his actions as he thought on his answer to her question. Concern was evident of her face when he told her that his mom had been ill, almost fatally. Sheva wished she could of helped, infact she could have, she didn't need much else to survive other than food and she would have gladly helped Nate out with money or hunting had she known it was after all just money, but it was past now and she didn't see the need to point it out. "Oh, I wish I could have helped, but I'm glad to hear she's recovering." she answered honestly.

With that small exchange all the resentment she had had toward Nate had been completely erased and she felt as if they could carry on with their unusual friendship. Every time her sky blue eyes met with his sea-foam green ones her smile flickered brighter for a moment.

Then it was her turn to answer a question, and fairly straight forward one at that, she looked down at the ground as she spoke before returning her gaze to Nate's "Me? Well I've been doing what I always do, hunting and wandering." she finished with another smile.

It was then at the mention of hunting that she noticed that the young hunter didn't have his trusty bow with him, even though he was at the archery range. "I think this is the first time I've ever seen you without your bow." she said with a light-hearted giggle.

Nate read the concern on Sheva's face as he spoke to her about his mother. He knew what she was thinking, but it just hadn't crossed his mind to ask for help from anyone. It had always been the two of them, his mother and himself. That was how it was, how they got by. They looked out for each other.
"I didn't think to ask actually, my mind was too taken up with everything going on and it just didn't occur." He gave the girl an appreciative smile.

The young man noted how she looked away before answering his question. To him, it was a sign that she hadn't enjoyed the time, and he inwardly cursed himself for not thinking of seeing her once. Her smile did return however, and Nate gave her another of his own. "Same old stuff then! Did you think about leaving at all?" He was curious. He knew how desperately Sheva wanted to travel and he was genuinely surprised she hadn't yet.

He grinned at her comment. "I've been doing so much extra hunting recently I just needed a break would you believe!" He laughed. "I felt like doing something else for a change, but now I'm actually out I don't know what that something else is!"

OOCIf you want to move them on to something else, like discussing their travels in the library or going somewhere then carry on!

Sheva understood how the thought of asking for help hadn't crossed his mind, as a tiger kelvic she understood what it was to only rely on yourself. Although Sheva's kelvic nature contrasted her need for independence with a longing for companionship, causing a very confusing inner-conflict.

"Same old stuff then! Did you think about
leaving at all?"

As Sheva thought on how to answer Nate's question she armed herself with her bow and drew the arrow in the direction of the nearest target.

"Yep, same old, but I have gotten better since we last saw each other." she said as she closed one eye and aimed the arrow
at the bullseye. She separated her feet and took a deep breath to steady her arm before finally loosing the arrow.

Her arrow whizzed threw the air and hit the target with a satisfying thud, burying itself deep in the straw just outside the bullseye. Not exactly the result she was looking for but not a bad one either.

Sheva gave Nate a cute shrug and smile as she rubbed her upper arm shyly, But I'm still not perfect...and yeah I did think about it, but it didn't seem right to just leave, especially without saying goodbye at the least. she said before shrugging again and happily retrieving the arrow from the target and returning to Nate.

She gave him the hug this time, but longer than his had lasted, pressing her head into the warmth of his chest as she spoke, "I'm glad you and you're mom are okay." then finally, she released him and began to walk down the snowy road towards the town.

"So, do you have time to waste today?" she asked with a sly smirk on her face as she turned back expecting him to follow.

Nate was a little taken aback as the pale-haired girl suddenly whipped her bow from where it rested upon her back. He took a small step back to give her some space, and watched on curiously as she aimed in the direction of the range targets. An eyebrow raised at her words followed by a little smile. He hoped she had been practicing what he had taught her those many moons ago.

As the all-too familiar and satisfying thunk of impact graced his ears, Nate turned to Sheva with a smile. "Nice one!" She had really improved her shot since he last saw her practice here at the archery range. He continued to talk after the girl as she went to retrieve her arrow. 'You really have improved heaps."

The young man was a little taken aback when she pulled him toward her on her return. Her head fit into the little space between his shoulder and chest, and she held him for a little longer than he would have done normally. It had been a long time since Nate had been hugged - or had hugged someone quite like this, and he wasn't sure what to make of it.

Almost abruptly he was released, and he watched Sheva turn and start walking towards town. There was a pause before he followed behind her. He wasn't sure if the girl had noticed his expression or not - either way she didn't seem to show it on her face.
"I have far too much time to waste!" He let his usual, easy smile return to his features. "What did you have in mind then?" The pair were quickly approaching the town, a few shops and the library coming into view.
"I'm begging you though, please don't make me go shopping!" Nate grinned sidelong at her as they trudged merrily through the snow.

"I'm begging you though, please don't make me
go shopping!"

Sheva didn't even bother trying to stifle her laugh at the young man's comment. Shopping? As a kelvic it was a concept she hadn't quite grasped yet, spending time going from store to store, browsing. It made no sense to her, she only bought things she knew she needed, other than that she avoided stores.

"Shopping!? That literally sounds like hell." she answered teasingly with another small giggle as she turned to flash him another smile. She turned her gaze to the sky above as she walked, trying to think of something for them to do.

"Well, we could go to the library, or we could go to Mirror Lake, I'm quite fascinated by the ice skating." she said in her usual enthusiastic tone. Sheva was curious about the activity, it looked amazing, how they danced across the frozen lake with ease, although she was sceptic about trying it for herself.
