Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

The 76th of Summer, 513 AV

The commotion came early in the evening just as shops were closing down and the street vendors were packing away their wares. The heat was upon Riverfall, so only a few had stuck it out and kept open towards this time of evening. Shadows should have fallen and cooled the streets with breezes that started flowing from the sea to the land. But they had not. Instead the hot Cyphrus plains still carried the scent of the Sea of Grass out across the city and further still, out to the actual Suvan Sea.

It was just dreadfully hot.

Which was why the Akalak boy that crashed into her front display window was a shock. No children had been playing out on the streets for hours. He frantically clawed at the glass, leaving bloody fingerprints in his attempt to run through it. Quick hands caught him, dragged him backwards, but not before he shoved something - wedging it - into the space where the glass fitted down into the stone. It was clearly visible from the inside due to the glass, but hidden from the outside due to the stone. The second figured dragged him off the window and slapped him hard. It was another boy, human this time, and smaller than the Akalak child. A third boy appeared, human like the second, and anyone witnessing the act could see that there was something utterly dangerous about the two boys facing down the first one.

The pair of humans toyed with the Akalak boy much like a set of lions would toy with a gazelle they knew was doomed and would soon be in their dinner. Predators sometimes acted like that, as if the taste of flesh was sweeter when infused with the fear all things experienced just before a violent death. One human didn't seem to move, but a dagger appeared in his hands anyhow. And before any witnesses could take a second breath, his other hand was armed. The Akalak boy took a step back, but he was still held firm by the first youth that had yanked him off the glass of The Red Diamond's door.

The boys, who could be no older than eight to perhaps ten years old, spun the Akalak child around, and without another word the one that held him by his shoulders suddenly had a garotte around his neck. The first boy, the one with the knives, began carving at the child, a sliced open arm there, a slashed cheek a moment later... the youths showed no mercy.

The Akalak boy was going to die. The child with the knives spit out violently "Where is it? Where's The Fire Talon?" The Akalak boy made to shake his head, but he was drawn up short by the second boy, who held him by the neck with a garrotte wire. The Akalak's boys fingers were wrapped around the wire, but there was no use. The second human had the advantage and could at any moment end the Akalak's life. The first human boy slashed again. Blood was oozing down the Akalak boy's body now, staining his white shirt red.

"TELL US." The first boy said, his voice raised and forceful, but not exactly shouting. The two half grown killers were eerily calm. More cuts came and the Akalak boy screamed. The latest one opened his chest up from almost neck to naval. No one was around. No one saw what was going on except for the person in The Red Diamond. It was just too hot, too late, and it was the perfect time for murder in broad daylight.

The Akalak boy swayed. He had no chance, however, to speak despite the other boys questions. The Garrotte cut off his breath and immobilized him. "Tivak, you will tell us or you will die." The boys said, almost in unison. The unequal fight continued. It was obvious the human boys were better trained by far than the Akalak youth. They were well muscled and moved with discipline. It was happening fast... too fast... and the boy caught by the other two was fading fast. The boy holding him was strong, trained, and the first boy torturing him was obviously just as skilled.

The boy with the daggers paused, quickly, and began searching the Akalak boy. Whatever he wanted wasn't to be found. And without an ounce of emotion, the humans met each others eyes, shook their heads, and slit the throat of the Akalak boy. They dumped the body, immediately, and took off at a controlled run down the street, back it seemed the way the boys had initially come.

The last thing they said was... "It has to be around here somewhere."

The item, shoved into Rosela's glass window, caught the dying daylight and splayed out its power across her display. Had the boys looked backwards, they would have known its location. But they did not. They moved off down the street, ducking into an alley. The Fire Talon lay wedged, between glass and stone, beneath bloody fingerprints on her display window.

A Darkening Heart (Rosela)

It had been a slow, miserable day, without a single customer after lunch time. The heat only seemed to increase as the sun left its zenith, and the streets outside were bare save for the heat lines radiating off of the cobblestones. It wasn’t desert heat, but it was still enough to make Rosela uncomfortable.

After discovering her casual wear was simply too stifling for the day, she went home at lunch and changed into her short, strapless skirt, hoping that cutting down the amount of fabric on her body would help. It was too hot to even work, and after getting back, she spent the rest of the day on the bare floor in the back room, fanning herself with a discarded design page. The day was very nearly over, and she was already thinking of a dozen places she’d rather be than at the shop, making small talk with the shadows.

”So if you don’t feel heat, you don’t feel cold then.”

“Correct.”

“Do you feel anything?”

“Anything involving physical touch, no.”

“Then how do you-“

She jumped abruptly at a crash at her front window, immediately praying she wouldn’t hear the tinkle of broken glass. Her paper fan was tossed up to the work desk and Rosela twisted on the floor to peer out the doorway to the front.

”Don’t go out there.”

Rosela turned back to look at the faceless, formless shadow. ”Why?”

“Something bad’s happening.”

She looked anxiously into the shaded place under her desk, wishing the creatures that seemed to fill her life had faces, or at least eyes. Something was happening out there, and she could faintly hear terrified cries…and violence. A moment of silence passed between her and the shadow, before she rolled up on her hands and knees, and with two hands pulling the front of her dress out of the way, and two more behind her to keep the back from riding up, she crawled out into the front.

Dusk was approaching, and the setting sun sent a swath of ominous crimson light across the inside of the store. Keeping to the shadows at the side of the room opposite the side the display window was on, she made it to the middle of the women’s section, and slowly rose up on her knees to look over the stack of women’s skirts. She could see commotion through the front door window, children, it looked like. Two human boys were harassing a young Akalak. No, not harassing; hurting, cutting. For the first time, she noticed the smears of blood on her display window, though her most immediate thought was how she’d manage to clean all of it off before the rest of the street saw. There was something sticking in from the side…

One of the human boys was asking a question, barely audible through the door. Something about a Fire Talon? Or was it a Dire Talon? Rosela slowly sunk her head back down below the shelf and crawled forward one aisle more. When she peered back up, she saw clearly a horrific splatter of blood cover the human boy. She still couldn’t hear well, but picked up a name, Tivak. It sounded familiar, an Akalak name.

”Stay down!” The shadow she hid in hissed urgently in her ear, and she sunk down lower, eyes barely above the folded pile of t-shirts. The situation outside was rapidly devolving, and it seemed to be only the span of breaths before the poor Akalak boy had his throat slit and the two human boys moved on. Blood was…everywhere. Should she have done something?

It was many chimes before she registered that she was staring at the boy’s dead body, slumped against her door window. She felt as though she should be crying.

The sun was sinking rapidly, and the small object wedged in her window caught the light, reflecting out a dazzling brilliance inside the shop. Numb, and unsure of what else she should do, she crawled to the window, shuffling anxiously when she passed the doorway, and pulled it from the stone. There was a terrifyingly loud scrape as it came free and she clutched her knees to her chest and listened for the sounds of the thugs returning. Only silence greeted her, and she shakily lifted the object into the light.

It was some kind of metal shard, with strange, colored glass embedded in it. Turning it over in her hands, she swallowed the hard lump in her throat when she wondered if this was what they’d been looking for.

She couldn’t stay there all night though – what would her neighbors think with a little boy dead on her doorstep? She needed to find help. Looking around the empty shop, she whispered to the shadows that vibrated in the corners and under shelves, watching her.

”Do you…can you see them? Those boys? Are they gone? Can I go get help?”

The shadows seem to confer with each other, and then they gave an answer that was typical of Akajia's kind. "No. They are not gone. They have just arrived. Much trouble for Riverfall is on the horizon. If they are here now, death will follow them. They care not for the living whom Dira stalks. They want those that Dira cannot touch. Death walks with them, and this boy has tasted it. They look young, but they are an old old threat. This is not good at all, not for Riverfall, and not for our Mistress. You can go seek help. The little Ruv'na's eyes are turned elsewhere now. They follow the trail that came before, looking for what the boy has left for you, Rosela. But he is important. And he will be missed." The shadows claimed, swirling around Rosela in a manner that she hadn't seen them do so far.

They were upset. And she could tell it wasn't about the boy slowly cooling in a pool of his own blood. They were upset about the presence of the two boys in the city and what it meant.

Rosela probably wasn't far from help. There was a Kuvay'Nas out and about in the streets, though most likely in this heat they would be loitering in squares and beneath the shadows of trees, watching from whatever breezy shade they could find at this hour.

Walking north or south along her street she could most likely find a guard to help her if someone wasn't along presently and spotted the body before she could report it. And if that was the case, there would be...

The shadows interrupted her thoughts.

"You should get help, Rosela. Fast. To let someone's royal son fall on ones doorstep without action will lead to too many questions. We know you are innocent of wrongdoing, but they will not see as we do." The shadow said.

The shadows were ominous about the affair, clearly knowing more than she did about what was going on, and the words sent goosebumps over her arms. How could a couple of kids, deranged though they may be, be a threat to Akajia herself? She clutched the metal shard to her chest. ”It was left for me…?” Her voice sounded unnaturally loud in the dark room. She gasped as the shadows seemed to rush her, fluttering around her like a dust storm. They were agitated, she could feel it in her very skin. Leaning sideways through the shadows, she could see the boy’s body still slumped there, and it was almost surprising, as though she’d expected someone else to take care of it by now.

”Royal?” She looked back up abruptly at the swirling shadows. ”I…I…” Not as we do? People might…?

With a startled gasp, she stumbled to her feet. ”Ok, ok, I’m…I’m going!” The shard was still clutched in two of her hands. The thought occurred to her that the Kuvay’nas might want it. ”It was left for me,” she repeated quietly to herself. Turning her back on the window, she wedged it under the bust of her skirt, shifting it to rest under the curve of her bosom. The point poked her awkwardly, and she made a mental note to include pockets in her designs in the future. Discomfort aside, the lace overlay covered the bump well enough.

It was time to go then. She couldn’t wait; someone may happen along at any time. Her hand began to shake as she reached for the doorknob, and after a deafening creak of the handle, the boy’s limp body slumped inside, pushing the door all the way open and making her jump back. There was an enormous amount of blood, and he was covered in slashes… Tearing her eyes away, she stepped over him awkwardly, unable to completely miss the blood as it covered the heel of one sandal. She stumbled the rest of the way out, and cast one last look at the mutilated body. A single, trembling breath, and she took off up the street.

Her sandals clapped loud as thunder on the streets, and she began to sweat immediately in the heat, and the shard dug painfully into her bosom. It was awkward to run in her sandals, but with her hair sticking to her face and a burning pain forming in her side, she finally saw a moving figure ahead. ”Hey!” She yelled out awkwardly, waving several arms. ”Hey!”

It was a Kuvay’nas, shirtless and sweating, and most importantly, armed. He spun around to her, concerned. “What seemed to be the trouble, miss?”

”I’m… There’s…” Her hands fluttered uselessly as she gasped for breath. The gasps came closer together, and she started to shake. ”There’s- There’s a boy! And he’s, oh gods…” Tears sprang up now, her breath coming in hiccupy gulps as she struggled not to cry. She was going to be safe now, they weren’t going to get her, no one was going to think it was her…

One large hand gently touched her shoulder. “Easy, miss. Take a deep breath, and tell me what happened.”

”He’s dead!” The words burst from her louder than she intended, and she broke down into hysterical sobs. Four hands covered her face as she struggled to keep talking. "The- The boys-"

The grip on her shoulder turned hard in an instant. “Who? Where? Tell me, now!”

”At my sh-shop!” One hand shakily pointed down the street. ”In front of the door! The boy, they killed him!”

“Show me!” He pulled her down the street, and still crying with her makeup running and hair everywhere, Rosela did her best to jog with him back towards the shop.

A Darkening Heart (Rosela)

Rosela had no trouble finding the guard down the street nor getting him to return with him. Isak and Kutal Symoon were dutiful veteran Kuvay'Nas and assessed the situation immediately. They checked the boy's body and found it still warm but the damage to his neck beyond repair. There was no sign of a struggle really, and the witness - an prominent business owner - had gotten a good view.

Isak picked up an elegant whistle on a chain around his neck and blew into it. A piecing noise filled the air, a tone designed to summon other guards. Then he turned to Rosela and placed a large hand on her shoulder, steadying her for a moment. "Can you tell me exactly what happened? Don't leave out any details?" The guard said, then introduced himself. "I'm Isak and Kutal Symoon and I recognize this child. This is Nevar Chivan's oldest son. Sava i going to be devastated. Can you tell us what happened? Exactly." He said, getting quiet and stoic, not showing how unnerved he was by the death of a child. More of Riverfall's finest warriors showed up as Rosela faced the Kuvay'Nas, giving her a chance to decide to tell her what happened.

Meanwhile, already five streets away, the two boys slipped quietly into a side street, and making use of a huge magnolia tree, ducked under it for a moment. Clothing reversed, going from dark and masculine to pale and girlish. Bundles of hair came out of pockets while longish boys hair was gathered up and collected at the nape of the neck and wrapped with extensions to make it look like the boys were sporting pony tails now. They took merely seconds to change, pinching each other's cheeks and giggling. Strings of colored wooden beads, festive and bright were slipped out of other pockets and around their necks. Belt pouches were inverted, turning from dark colored affairs to brightly colored and embroidered with hearts. Eight year olds were very flexible in appearance, and the boys utilized this to the extreme. Miraculously transformed into two little girls with long hair, the pair slipped out from under the magnoiia tree with its cover foliage and grabbed each other's hands and headed on down the street laughing and giggling, occasionally pointing something out to one another.

On the roof top, overlooking Rosela and the gathering Kuvay'Nas' position, was a larger shadow. This one was full grown, easily blending into the deep cast shadow of an adjacent building's roof. He'd been overseeing the boys and their job, monitoring them without them knowing it to judge their performance. To a casual observer he showed no emotion. But to someone trained to read other's well, the man was coldly disappointed. The boys had not only been sloppy but evidently hadn't gotten what they wanted. The woman, on the other hand, perhaps had. She'd taken something out of the window of the door, discretely, but his vantage was good.

So she had something he wanted, and she'd witnessed two trainees blundering a murder. No Silence wasn't happy at all. The man shifted, slowly backing away as the guards converged en mass. He turned, slipped down off the roof via the far sid eof the building, and set out to catch up with the pair he was charged to train.

He needed more Intel. And, he needed the Fire Talon.

On Rosela's part, while she was busy talking to the Kuvay'Nas - if in fact she would talk - the companions that were never very far vanished. They converged on the roof surrounding the stranger, gathering information from him, about him, and when things grew quiet, the young Akajia follower would know what they knew as well.

A Darkening Heart (Rosela)

Rosela started violently at the sharp noise, and two hands flew to cover her mouth. Her skin felt moist and disgusting, and every fiber of her being wanted to go home, take a shower, and pretend like she hadn’t seen…

”Their son…?” A lip trembled and instinctively, she glanced over to the body, immediately turning her head away from the renewed image of horror. ”What-What happened. Okay.” Sniffling lightly, all six arms wrapped around herself and she forced her breath to slow. She would be okay. The Kuvay’nas knew what they were doing, and they’d take care of everything. ”I was in my shop. This, this is my shop – I’m Rosela,” she added belatedly, nodding towards the display window, ominously reflecting the crimson sky over the swath of blood. More men arrived, and with each one, she felt a modicum of comfort. They’d protect her.

”I heard a crash against my front window. It was… We’re closed for the evening, so I was a little worried. I came out and…” Her voice broke and one hand pressed over her lips as she tried to swallow the memory. ”There was blood on the window, and two boys – human boys,” she purposefully emphasized. ”Were attacking… They were… They had a wire thing, and then a knife, and…his throat…” One hand raised tremblingly to her own throat and she forced herself to continue. ”Then they ran off. They just…left him here. I-I got out after they were gone and got you.”

Events reported, Rosela felt a slight release of the pressure around her heart. She sniffled again and looked up at the darkening sky. ”Um, they were both young, the two other boys. Like… ten? Maybe? I didn’t get a very good look. I didn’t, I mean, I have a knife, but I’m not that good at it? I took my competency test in the bow, and it’s not like I keep it on me; nothing’s ever happened like this…” With a small intake of breath, she forced herself to stop babbling. They wouldn’t – they couldn’t possibly – have expected her to defend the boy.

Then there was the question of the Talon, pushing hot and sharp against her breast at that very moment. She hadn’t intentionally left it out, but...the shadows had said it was hers. The shadows spoke for Akajia, didn’t they? If the Kuvay’nas somehow found out she had it, she could always defer to that higher authority, or say that she found it later and didn’t think it was related. Granted, the shadows hadn’t explicitly told her to keep it a secret, but she’d never be allowed to keep it when it was clearly related to the murder.
