Character History
Taeghen Tarnruth was born in Zeltiva, the son of a weaponsmith and a baker. He spent most of his childhood roaming the streets, always desiring to see new places and experience new things. His father said he should spend his time mastering a craft, but Taeghen would not sit still long enough to learn to work the forge. His mother encouraged his wanderlust, taking him with her any time she left town. Taeghen loved these adventures, even if they were just simple deliveries.
Taeghen always had an interest in swords, even though he couldn't bring himself to care how they were made. His father would not give him a sword of his own, but his mother purchased him wooden swords to play with. Taeghen could often be seen playing war games with the other children, the streets of Zeltiva his own personal battlefield. At age sixteen his father finally agreed to let him have his first sword. It was a short sword, well made but too light for Taeghen's liking. Still, Taeghen learned to use it well.
On his seventeenth birthday Taeghen hired on with a merchant caravan as one of three armed escorts. He traveled with them as they went to and from Syliras, selling their wares along the way. While there was no combat involved in the journey, Taeghen's wanderlust was born anew. Unfortunately it would be some time before he left Zeltiva again. Upon returning home his mother fell deftly Ill, and Taeghen could not bring himself to go on any more long journeys. He eventually signed on with the Zeltiva guard, and continued to practice his swordsmanship, having access to various types of weapons and expanding beyond the use of his small shortsword.
His mother eventually recovered, but Taeghen was now stuck as a city guard. It was boring beyond belief, and the most excitement he ever got was breaking up bar fights or chasing down the occasional thief. Despite his dislike for the job, Taeghen spent five years of his life as a city guard before finally announcing that he was leaving the city to see the world. Taeghen traveled the borders of Sylira, finding work as a courier here, caravan guard there, until he finally made his way back to Zeltiva. He picked up the skill of cartography along the way and attempted to make money selling his maps, though there were few takers.
During his travels Taeghen witnessed his first highway robbery, coming upon a group of thugs attacking a farmer and his wife who only sought to make it back to their home before dark. The husband was killed before Taeghen could intervene, but Taeghen stopped the thugs before they could harm the woman further. It was the first time he'd ever killed somebody, and while he didn't like it his rage at what they had done overruled his normal sensibilities. Since then Taeghen has committed himself to protecting those less fortunate than him, offering his protection to anyone he see's on the road, usually free of charge.
When he finally returned to Zeltiva he discovered his mother had fallen ill again and passed away shortly before he arrived. Taeghen was devastated and remained in Zeltiva for some time before his wanderlust was finally jumpstarted by an offer to deliver some documents to a man in Syliras. Taeghen readily accepted and bid his father farewell, then departed for Syliras. It has been two years since and Taeghen has continued his life of travel, picking up odd jobs when he comes to towns and selling his maps but spending most of his time on the road. He rarely stays in once place for more than a few months before getting restless and hitting the road once more.
