They trekked for bells. Long enough for men to grow weary, panting, sweat dripping under Syna's yellow vigil. There was not much conversation. Words were muttered and brief; at times it must have seemed there was hardly enough air to go around. The Nuit felt her muscles warm, the motion enough to bring out some heat... but her breaths came steady and her limbs did not strain in the same way that the others' sometimes did. She could endure physical exertion and would feel absolutely nothing unless her muscles or nerves were torn; this dead body that she wore epitomized the next-closest thing to pure, everlasting endurance.

Still, the journey wasn't easy. A lot of the climb was just that: a climb. Most of it was uphill, ranging from a light incline in some places to becoming so steep as to be dangerous in others. There were rocks that had to be scurried over, and uneven, rough footing that begged to twist ankles and cause boots to skid. Isolde just did her best to keep on her feet, finding it not too tough of a job if she was cautious. She routinely alternated where she looked, up-down, up-down. When she wasn't watching where she was stepping her eyes were sweeping the skies, gaze sharp as to pierce the clouds. Searching for the sinuous twisting of a snake amid the blue, for the sight of the sea-serpent of the sky.

So of course she was looking at her feet when it happened. The lead Knight called for them to stop, and the Nuit dropped to her belly like the rest, hunkering down, peering up with dull, blue eyes.

The thing flew overhead.

The wind generated from its gigantic wings was enough to send a breeze across Isolde's face, tousling her short, blonde hair and rustling her clothes. Her hood fell back, and underneath there was a look almost akin to wonder on her features. So this was the Balicani. This great, slithering shadow that drifted over them all. That awesome sparkling of emerald scales, so pretty, shining fit to blind the eyes. Like all the stories she had heard growing up, but somehow unlike the stories, too. Majestic as it soared. Terrible in its beauty.

A scream shattered the air, along with the abrupt, dusty sound of thumping, running feet. The beast whirled, clutching, dragging this sudden threat into the air, up, up, up, and then the man was falling, crunch, to the ground, bones cracking, scream abruptly cut short as he met rock and grass, life crushed out of his broken frame--

Terrible in its temper, as well. The Balicani spotted the rest and bellowed out its rage, and then the Nuit was on her feet and they were all running towards the cover of the trees, bounding to safety like deer before a dire wolf. Like prey before a predator.

Except they were the ones supposed to be hunting.

None of it felt real. Isolde had pressed herself against the hard trunk of a tree, the archers and crossbowmen loading arrows and bolts into place all around her, calloused hands shaking. The Knight was shouting for them to aim at the wings, shoot the wings, shoot the wings, bring this beast to the ground! His words excited no flurry inside her as it did in the others. Neither had the first man's tumbling, shrieking death. Isolde could conjure no fear, no sadness, no dismay. She peered out from around her tree, trying to see past branches, trying to make herself feel what she should be feeling. There was nothing. She gave up. The Nuit simply made sure that Matthew had made it to the treeline --offering him a humorless smile when she saw that he had-- and then she craned her neck once more to keep an eye on the beast.

Their attack so far was not making much of an impression on the creature. There were a good number of projectiles being loosed at the Balicani... but the wind displaced with each flap of his great wings was driving them off course, causing most to go soaring past, harmlessly into the sky or, oppositely, seeming to suck their momentum away, sending them fluttering back down to the dirt. Isolde would not have a shot at its eyes until it was grounded; so, then, all there was to do was wait. Wait here, under what little cover the group had--

Until the serpent swooped down, all wind and glittering green scales and spurting venom like foul-smelling, foul-colored saliva. A man was hit nearby. For a flash the Nuit thought about running over to drag him to better cover. But within ticks his flesh and organs --even his very bones-- had dissolved into a nasty, meaty, softly bubbling paste. There would be no helping him.

Everyone was running, now, at the Knight's orders. Isolde sprinted with the others, scrambling from her original position within the trees out into the open, zig-zagging forward before turning on her toes and tearing off in the opposite direction, trying to make herself a hard target. She was hoping to stay out of the way in general. Until they forced the foul reptile to the ground, she was useless. And it looked like their goal might take a while--

Oh wait, nevermind.

The redhead, Edreina, had provoked the beast somehow. It was swooping down again, but, no...! It had landed, was crawling and squirming and giving chase, and the Nuit paused in her run to watch it go, struck motionless by its strange brilliance. She saw Razkar race after it, loosing an arrow to slam into its scaly hide, seeing it bend back in response as if it had no true spine, snapping its jaws at a new target before laboriously alighting to the sky once more on damaged wings.

Though it was injured, the thing was still well able to fly, and it had not been much dissuaded from its attack. The Balicani soared high immediately, buying a respite from the many arrows targeting its more delicate parts... before it swung back low again. Its attacks had grown all the more frenzied and fearsome, the pain of its injuries causing it to go into a blood rage. It swooped down and another hapless hunter was snatched from his feet. He tried his best to hack at the Balicani's legs, desperate to free himself--

And then just like that he had been rended apart. His body hit the ground in scattered pieces, clothed in bloody rags and scraps of shimmering metal. Blood sprinkled from the sky like warm red rain. The Nuit turned her face down to keep the shower from her eyes--

And everywhere she looked archers had already used up most of their supply. Really, half of Isolde's dodging was due to falling projectiles, arrows and bolts whose paths had been altered by the harried beating of the Balicani's great wings. She had witnessed at least one unlucky man take an arrow and fall, confused by this unexpected attack, to the ground, spilling blood from his neck where it had hit. When she swept her gaze around, the Nuit saw that the ground was littered with spent shot.

No time to do anything. The beast was heading low again, dancing overhead. Isolde ran to the trees with the others to avoid the next attack from questing claws and teeth. Branches snapped and swung, leaves shaken free to the ground, as if the trees themselves feared the assault.

When they next rushed back out of the treeline, the Nuit ran low, bent-over, new purpose held firmly in her mind. She spirited to the nearest bunch of felled arrows and began plucking up those that were not too deeply embedded in the ground and those whose shafts had not been snapped by impact on unforgiving scales or stones. The bowmen could use these back, and she figured that recycling them would be necessary if they planned to have enough ammo to actually shoot the creature down, especially at the slow rate that they were wounding him--

The Balicani passed over her and dipped a wing, turning, seeming to orient on the Nuit for a moment, her face like a pale-white target against the dark of the ground. And then it saw Edreina, again, and roared after her, fixated on that flash of burning red hair, and the Nuit did not spare the time to see if the girl made it safely out of harm's way--

She simply dashed to the next area were a volley had landed, digging the spent arrows up, hands dirtied by mud and blood. As soon as she had a goodly number the Nuit dashed back to the treeline. She dumped her burden on the ground not far from those still skulking in the trees and hollered, "Arrows, here!" before pausing. Holding her place... waiting for the Balicani to fly free. Where was the beast? She could hear it thrashing, knocking aside trees, and realized, once more, that it had landed though she could not see where... and then there it was, floating higher and higher, wings pushing hard, lashing its head and neck around as if in distress though she could only guess at why. The Nuit looked for the right moment... and then headed back out.

A man was running with her, breathing harshly behind her, apparently one of the others who were useless as long as the Balicani wasn't on the ground, intent on helping her gather the misfired missiles. Knowing, like her, that conservation of ammunition was all that would bring the beast to heel--

And the Balicani flew in near again, still whipping its head about as if it had somehow been hurt, making a strange, enraged choking noise. Time to get the hell out of the way, quick. They were both running, neck-and-neck, side-by-side, a double target, more noticeable--

Isolde looked over her shoulder, seeing the monster's gaping jaw as it prepared to hurl a misting spray in their direction, seeing its belly distend grossly, seeing it arch its neck in that tell-tale manner--

She grabbed her companion by the arm, dragging him with her to the side as the creature spit, but it wasn't enough, they were both going to get hit, their flesh would boil and melt, no--

And without thinking she screamed, white mist exploding from her mouth, curling directly into the path of the acidic spittle, transmuting into a hard slap of air as it went--

Somehow the deadly spew missed them, missed them both, splattering to the ground, and she was surprised to see blood in the mix of green chewing a hole into the grass. Isolde didn't know if her Reimancy had actually managed to knock the liquid away or if the beast had missed for some other reason, of which there could be many. She didn't care to hang around and find out. Both she and her helper rushed to cover, gripping each other tightly, dumping more arrows to the pile, which was diminishing as fast as they could supply.

It went on like that in a pattern. As soon as the beast soared high the two would turn and run back out, retrieving what they could in the short amount of time that it was 'safe' to do so, aiding the fight in their own, small way. They would continue to do so for as long as was necessary, or until the battle shifted.

[The Cobalt Mountains] Monster Hunter

Postby Matthew on August 12th, 2013, 3:47 pm

Pfft. Lead them. He had just gotten them into a little group and made them aware of each other. He heavily doubted they were actually going to move as a singular fighting force. But, he nodded anyways. "Yes, ser."

Polite as always.

---

Gods, it was just as big as he remembered. Edreina bounded over to him and asked him a question, to which he just nodded. Hopefully that wouldn't end up being a mistake.

It was bigger, perhaps. Maybe it had eaten the other one, and therefor doubled in size. Was that something that could be done? He wasn't sure. But, he could see now that when him and Sagitta had fought the thing, it had just been teasing them. Now it was serious, and with seriousness, came the utter savageness. It reared it's head and spit, lunged, clawed, bit, shredding bones from skin if it didn't simply melt them. It was a whirlwind of death and blood, raining down on all of those who had passed on his domain. Screaming filled the air, roars and commands drowned out the screams, and then the sound of blurring arrows drowned out even that. Acid was flung here and there, teeth ripped one guy in half and then an arrow took revenge by tearing through the monster's wing. It was all a lot to handle at once, really. They were supposed to fight like this? What a horrible mess. Was battle normally this horrible of a mess? He had half a mind to ask Razkar, but it probably wasn't the time right now. Why was he so calm? He had been a quivering blob the last time he had seen the beast. What had changed between now and then?

Nothing, really. He was still just a man. A whore. It was as simple as that. He had just made his peace somewhere along the line. Or perhaps it was the images that he had managed to summon right before coming here? In the library. In his library. He somehow caught Isolde's eye, and returned her humorless smile. It seemed appropriate.

Then he stood still, closing his eyes, slim figure hidden behind a tree.

Information flooded through the library as the battle updated his mind. The vision of Razkar moved much clearer now, all speed and ruthless violence. Viper was there as well, his bow in his hands, blurring arrow up at the beast. Then there was the one with the axe, and then there was Edreina, and then there was Isolde, all of them shimmering briefly in his Library before reappearing... updated. They now moved with more realism, and Matthew was able to manipulate them with more confidence. This one moved here, that one moved there, this one here... then that, then this, and then... arrows. Down on the ground. Ground it. Kill it. Kill it.

He moved, a brisk pace lighting his steps, blue eyes sharp as he summoned his Djed. Flowing it into his mouth, he began to slowly sing, letting the Hypnotism entwine with his soft words. He didn't even have a song in mind, just added a melody to the words he spoke. Words of battle and bravery, of love and lust, of heroes and villians, and the ones that always won in the end. His path took him through a line of archers, and to each of them, he blessed courage and confidence. His words held suggestions of their victory, of how true their aim really was. He wanted to inspire them, to make them believe that they could fire their arrows. Some didn't seem to have a target, so he brushed fingers over their shoulders, whispering to aim for the wings. That would ground the beast, which was so very important. Oddly enough, Matthew didn't seem to get glanced at by the monster. Perhaps it was because he was moving so casually, and didn't have a weapon. Out of everyone here, he was the least of a threat. Even less of a threat than the horses that had wheeled them halfway here, probably. He didn't pay it any mind though, not testing his luck. He kept flowing through the little battalion, eyes peeled for one person. It wasn't long before he found him, knelt beside the fire-head, covering her.

Matthew was upon them soon, crouching beside of both of them, grabbing Razkar by the shoulder. "Raz-kar." Only one person who would pronounce his name like that, and in that maddeningly dettached tone. Matthew shrugged off his shoulder bag, the little thing falling on the ground, some flint and stone rolling out of it... and some wood. Old wood with cloth wrapped around the top. Makeshift torches, really. If the Myrian turned to look at him, the minute their eyes made contact, Matthew hit him with his magic.

Courage. Strength. Protector.

The ideas and suggestions clouded the air around them, focused on the warrior, attempting to put even more bravery into the Myrian. Even more than he already had. Pushing aside doubts, questions, everything else but the idea that they could win. That they would win, and gloriously. Matthew nodded his head toward the makeshift torches, words hissed. "The horn. On the forehead. Extremely flammable. Combustible. Fire. It could end this quickly, the next time it is grounded. If it isn't already dead. Get off of her. I'll take it from here. I'm a doctor." Well, he had been training to be a doctor. The two of them didn't need to be reminded of that. If Razkar would allow him, Matthew would take his position basically atop Edreina. He drowned out the hissing and screaming around him, along with the roars of both beast and battle. Glaring at the woman, he reached up to his sleeve, tearing it clean from the shoulder. "You aren't supposed to get hit in a fight." Ah, so encouraging. With a slight scowl, as if she was inconviencing him, he quickly and tightly wrapped up the wound on her hip. If she tried to get up, she would be met with an endless amount of touches and shoves, each of them targetting both weak points on her body and pleasurable spots on her body. She was his patient, and she would stay down until he was done. As a last resort, he would actually slap her wound, popping it with a good amount of force. Scowling again at her, he slowly danced very gentle fingertips over her body, checking for cracked or broken bones. If he found them, she would be forced to stay behind the tree. If he didn't, she would be allowed to get up, though with quite a judgemental stare leveled at her.

[The Cobalt Mountains] Monster Hunter

Postby Sagitta on August 14th, 2013, 2:57 pm

With a rope and a grappling hook secured on her belt, along with her dagger, Sagitta set off with the others, preferring to stay right in the middle. That way, she would not be the one to face any sort of danger and would be alerted if there was. The whole journey, she had nervously whipped her head from side to side, trying to spot anything out of place. This had reminded her a little to much of her first day after the fall. The wilderness, the trees, the green - throw in some giant bird and some ruins and it would be perfect. On one side, she was familiar with the scene, but it unnerved her all the same.

About the time Edreina left in search for something she could not really tell, Sagitta was dying to do something. The Ethaefal was unsure of what kind of role she was going to play in the whole quest, but she figured she would do something she was familiar with. Stake out. High places are always the best place to start. Earlier, she had ran ahead of the group and picked a massive, sturdy looking tree. Her climbing skills were rusty, but it was enough for her to find some sure footing and grips. Pulling her body up was no real problem, her mind aware enough in the arts of shifting her weight accordingly. Admittedly, she had been lighter than she was supposed to. In her Ethaefal state, she had never had the need to eat and there was less food entering her system. Her arms and legs stretched out as she reached for a higher branch and hoisted herself up. Every a few while she would slip, but she found another hold most of the time.

Everything had happened so fast. A roar. A command. Screaming. Yelling. Winds gushing. Sagitta barely had the time to crane up her neck to get a better look.

When her eyes caught the glistening color of the Balicani, Sagitta clenched her jaw tensely. It's here. Her heart seemed to claw its way out her throat, cutting off her air. She could not afford to panic now. She had chosen to stay and fight and that's what she shall do.

From her perch up on the tree, the monster did not notice her, its attention drawn to the bigger danger amongst the knights and volunteers. There were arrows flying everywhere, mostly zipping past the Balicani harmlessly. Some struck home, but seemed to have no real effects.

Warily, the girl wondered whether she should get into the chaos or not. She could always disappear now and no one would notice. Her being gone was probably not much of a loss, but again, she needed this. Needed the money. The least she could was stand her ground and figure something out. There was more chance of her surviving this encounter. Compared to her condition during her first encounter with the creature, she felt marvelous. Her joints did not ache and her mind did not feel like it was about to explode. That's good, right?

Before long, the redheaded Svefra seemed to have attracted the Balicani's attention in particular. She was separated from the others, not exactly a good sign. After a jumble of movements, she was already on the ground. Sagitta couldn't see the scene clearly, half of her sight covered by branches and leaves. What she did notice was the Myrian coming over to the girl. Someone else was coming. Viper, was it?

Once, the Balicani was somehow brought to the ground. Some damage to its wing maybe? Slowly and surely, an idea formed inside her jumbled head. It was hard to think clearly in situations like this. At least, she was far from the initial fighting, letting her hatch out some odd ideas.

Somewhere a distance away, somebody was singing. She could not tell who or where the sound was coming from, but someone was certainly singing. She could feel it buzzing under her skin. Was she imagining things? Who would sing at times like this? But for some miraculous reason, hearing the song had solidified her crazy little plan.

The Balicani was hovering not far from her, only about five feet or so, but she was also standing higher than it. The wind from its flapping wings whipped her unkempt hair, forcing her to push it away with annoyance. Her other hand reached for the grappling hook on her belt, unstrapping it. Silvery eyes held its gaze on the wings of the monsters, trying to find a tear or something.

It shouldn't be too hard, right? She had thrown these hooks in further distances - either on top of roofs or cliffs or walls. It wasn't something new. But the idea of throwing it at a living, flying something that happen to have a magical-killing spit was not entertaining. Just focus on a spot and then swing and toss. Simple steps.

The execution, unfortunately, was not as easy. The wind from its wing was not helping her effort, ruining her calculation every time. Fail. Fail. Fail. Again, Sagitta let the hook flew in the air, the rope slipping from her loose grip and missed. It was getting more and more infuriating. Now, she doubted if it was possible at all. Where was the hook suppose to hold anyway?

One of the volunteers, a young man with a bow, saw what she was trying to do and aimed his arrows at the Balicani, keeping it at an certain angle and its attention away from her. She hoped she could telepathically thank him or something.

Two more times she tried with no result. She took a deep shuddering breath, impatience making her toss clumsier. The archer was depleting his arrows and it won't be long until the Balicani decided to attack him. Someone was giving her a great opportunity, yet she accomplished nothing. She wanted to scream in frustration, but it would only attract the Balicani's attention to her.

With a silent prayer, she threw the hook again. This time, it had somehow latched itself on its membrane-bound wing. She couldn't see where exactly - not that she cared. Tightening her grip on the rope, Sagitta jumped back. The creature roared as its wing was ripped. It was distracted and unable to focus on her. She swung right beneath the serpentine monster. Her arms and legs were brought in and she flipped midair, landing with a roll rather clumsily. Stumbling and tripping, she straightened. The girl was right beneath the creature. She had counted on the fact that the last time it had not seem to be able to notice her if she positioned herself in such a way.

The Balicani careened dangerously above her. It seemed like it was about to crash any moment.

Something tackled her out of the way and they rolled away into a slight safety behind a half-destroyed bush. The archer. He dragged her by the arm, not giving her a chance to collect herself. "You are mad. Completely and utterly mad."

The Ethaefal couldn't agree with him more.

Medieval 2 Total War OST - Crusaders

Awesome guys! It's down! Now we will proceed with the ground battle! Finish the giant serpent up, but remember to not overplay your skills. Only 10 of you left (including Ser Wade and his two knights) so no more faceless NPC hunters. ;)

Wade, we're moving on. You're still in, of course ;)

"ROAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!!!"

The Balicani roared in pain as its wounds caught up to it and the tear on its wings due to the arrows and finally, Sagitta's hook brought it limping and crashing down on the ground, some distances away from the whole party. It tried to lift its body and retreat, but found unable to do so. It writhed around on the ground for the moment, Ser Wade saw this and knew that as soon as the Balicani got up, it would bolt away from them.

"IT'S DOWN! SURROUND IT! SURROUND IT NOW!!!" He commanded, he and his two knights immediately ran to the downed Balicani. The party followed suit, rushing to the stunned Balicani "Archers! Shoot its head, care the venom spit! Warriors! You may approach but be very careful of its talons, tail, and horns"

"Mage!" He suddenly shouted to Isolde and threw her a jar full of flammable oil "Use your wind to coat a pebble in it and launch it to its horns! That should set it on fire!" He didn't have time to be judgmental of non-knight mages. Every help would be welcomed in this situation.

"Escort!" Ser Wade spoke to Matthew, he gave him a look of acknowledgement "Keep up your battle-song!" Believe it or not, his songs actually improved the moral of the hunters.

"Archers cover us! Warriors..." He eyed the Myrian, the young man with the battleaxe, the red-haired Svefra, and the Ethaefal. He dropped his heavy crossbow, brandished his longsword, readied his shield, and activated his Gnosis.

"CHAAAAAAAAAAARGE!!!"

With that, Wade rushed forward with his knights covering his back with their crossbows.

[The Cobalt Mountains] Monster Hunter

"Why in the hells didn't anyone else think of that...?"

The arrows and bolts took their toll, a dozen sticking out of the Balicani's thick scales, icor and blood oozing over them... but the grappling hook did the real damage. Razkar watched from his crouch next to Edri as a slight-looking female dashed out and hurled her barbed, cruel weapon upwards, rope trailing behind it-

-and snagged the swooping creature.

Razkar's eyebrow shot up his forehead as the Balicani screeched in agony, wing nearly pulled out from its body. It's steady swoop turned into a scrambling mess of feet and scales and raining blood and-

-thrashing limbs that thumped hard onto the rock and crab grass, writhing madly as it realized the skies were now denied to it.

"IT'S DOWN! SURROUND IT! SURROUND IT NOW!!!"

Sound advice, Razkar thought, and turned to his comrades. Matthew was bent over the wincing Edreina, binding her bloody hip with a strip of cloth. Any questions the Myrian had as to whether this human had some mage in him were dispelled when he looked up for the first time into his eyes after he and the Svefra crashed back to cover, and felt-

-hope. A great, bright swell of martial belief in their cause. One Balicani, three, ten, it didn't matter. Their purpose was true and their arms strong. They would win; they could win. The thoughts seemed to grow in his head like cuckoo young and Razkar felt a familiarity...

The singing. That was him. Inspiring us... and not just with oratory.

"Time to go." He snapped, tossing aside his bow and filling his hand with ax and gladius instead, bone-handled weapons gleaming. He tossed a quick glance to Edreina, but whatever else he thought of Matthew, he knew his abilities as a healer were competent. "Stay with her. Keep her here."

Edreina's face contorted in outrage but one look at the two men towering over her told her what her chances would be if she tried to move. Matthew, especially, seemed adept at making sure "doctor's orders" was not just an expression.

Flashing heaps of metal bought Razkar's head snapping around. Not just metal: armor. Suits of it. Ser Wade and his duo clanking and huffing after the Bacilani, serpent mouth with shark teeth and bat eyes glaring at them hatefully. The others ran out from cover, and Razkar joined them.

"Archers! Shoot its head, care the venom spit! Warriors! You may approach but be very careful of its talons, tail, and horns."

A safe strategy, and quickly carried out. Within ticks the Bacilani found half-a-dozen of those "insects" surrounding it, refusing to give it the freedom it loved so much. It snapped and hissed but whenever its attention was focused, something else jabbed its scales or shouted, battering its sensitive senses. The Myrian feinted and jerked his weapons towards it now and then, snarling and spitting back bile when the creature turned to him.

Memories of Falyndar again. A tiger that came so close to slaughtering him, overwhelmed in turn by his fang. Hunter becoming prey in ticks, butchered and hewn by a dozen bloody blades.

"Archers cover us! Warriors..."

Razkar knew what was coming before the final word hit the breeze. Five feet of sharpened steel the width of his hand flashed like a bolt of lightning on the horizon, brawny arm of Ser Wade holding it up, then grasping it with both hands.

"CHAAAAAAAAAAARGE!!!"

"FOR MYRI!"

Razkar's own call to his Goddess-Queen was ripped from his throat as he raised his weapons, body tense and-

-not moving. Not yet.

Dying is not victory. Your enemy dying is.

A chorus of calls, shouts, oaths and just plain screams were raised from a half-dozen mouths and the Balicani swung around in enraged confusion. So many targets! So many scurrying things with long, sharp metal claws! Some of them even gleamed like flint and it hurt hurt hurt! Razkar watched, raised on the balls of his feet, weapons humming in his hands, gnosis clawing and scratching at his neck, waiting.. waiting...

Until the serpentine beast swung around to roar at the lunging Ser Wade, grizzled face unafraid as he slashed with his long sword, curved talons lashing out to stop it-

-turning away from Razkar, to his left-

-and the Myrian moved with every ounce of the speed Myri had gifted him.

He darted forward, coming low, ax in his right hand and cocked back low to the ground, knowing he had mere ticks to make this count. Razkar spun as he got close, doubling the power of the ax, already doubled by the Power of Bones worked on it, the world becoming a whirl of images like an oil painted smeared over his eyes-

-and then the swinging ax smashed into the Balicani's left front leg like it was a young sapling. A screech of sheer agony echoed and roared as bone and scales were shattered under that thunderous blow, Razkar feeling the delicious grind of metal on bone before he ripped his weapon free-

-and the leg collapsed under the hissing creature, already swining his head back towards Razkar-

-his gladius twirled in his hand, grip becoming reversed, as if for stabbing, pulling his arm across his chest-

-saw that long neck, covered in slimy scales and pierced with arrows, horn mounted on top of it glistening as if with pus, a nightmare visage from a Dhani's wildest fantasy-

And didn't that thought just spur the Myrian onward?

Razkar's own shriek of barely-sentient hatred almost drowned out the thrashing creature as it swung towards him-

-then bought his gladius flashing, stabbing backhanded sideways into the creature's neck. The scales were tough and the angle was hard, but it pierced the skin and he twisted, blade buried in the monster's neck... feeling the steaming, stinking hiss of that venom sizzling on it from within the beast's throat.

His whole world became snapping teeth and Razkar threw himself back, leaving the gladius impaled in the Balicani's throat. His balance was off and he rolled backwards, grunting as rocks and stone scraped and bit into his back, but better them than-

-the shadow that rose over him, crippled creature lurching forwards on three legs now, the left-front almost hanging by a layer of scales, head topped with a galaxy of fangs lashing out towards him-

-warded off by the Myrian's desperate swing from his ax, rolling to his side-

-just as its remaining useful front leg crunched rock and stone under where he'd just been, and he kept rolling, over and over, until the shadow was gone-

-and he got back to his feet, ripping his kukri free from his chest sheath with his free hand, feeling better for having a weapon in each now. The Balicani was focused on him now, the tanned and savage insect who'd dared to cripple it. Some part of it knew the wounds were mortal, in that oddly emotionless way animals understand such things, but it was far beyond caring.

If nothing else, it would take one more soul with it into the blackness.

"That's it." Razkar snarled, seeing the darting, flitting figures behind and flanking the dying but still-lethal beast, "Look at me. Ignore them. Blind yourself, and let them finish you..."

Razkar has been cursed by Yahal, and as such finds little acceptance from others; they will instinctively view him as being deceptive and traitorous. However, when close to one blessed by Yahal, the effect is negated. The curse is etched onto his left pectoral, and viewing the mark causes others to feel dirty and unclean.

[The Cobalt Mountains] Monster Hunter

Isolde was running around too much to see it when it happened. All she knew was that something had to give. Their hunters... the archers were dying. This was a losing battle. Of their original force, only about half seemed to be left.

Regardless of the outcome, everyone kept trying. The Nuit knew, just knew, that it was because of Matthew. Because of that song. That song that had been able to make even the Nuit start to feel again. But not what she expected.

No. Not afraid.
Strong. Courageous. Brave. Capable.

But would this-- this feeling, this magic, would it be enough? The Balicani, even though it had been injured... it was going to be able to pick them off, one by one. Nobody was running, trying to save themselves. Nobody planning to give up and regroup, to make new plans and come back later to finish off this bloody battle. No. They were all staying. They would all be snatched up, raised to a height, and then dropped. Or they would be torn to shreds. Eaten. Dissolved into puddles, even.
Or-- or--

Or saved by a girl with a grappling hook?

One moment the creature was swooping overhead, ready to end more lives... and the next it was screeching and bellowing and hissing in agony, struggling to keep to the air. Its efforts were wasted. The beast soon hit the ground.

New orders were shouted. And, surprisingly:
"Mage!" The Nuit turned her head in time to see a jar fly at her, hitting her in the chest. She grabbed for it automatically, reflexes sluggish... the jar landed in the dirt by her feet, and she snatched it quickly back up. "Use your wind to coat a pebble in it and launch it to its horns! That should set it on fire!"

Matthew continued to sing, and something like hope flared within. Useful. She could be useful after all. She-- she could help.

Isolde turned to the man who'd been helping her gather up the spent ammo and--
And realized he was gone.
Gone. Dead. The Balicani must've gotten him at some point in time.
Well, shyke.
So instead of handing the bolts and arrows she'd been gathering to him she just dumped them on the ground in a heap.

The others were running after the Balicani, poking the monster from all sides, trying to confuse it and wear it down. The Nuit jogged after them, dipping her hand into her pocket, bringing out a handful of smooth pebbles.

Still feeling calm-strong-certain, she found a place of appropriate distance. As long as the others kept the Balicani where it was, she would be within range. The Nuit squatted to the ground. The jar was pried open, the pebbles settled next to it, lying cupped in its lid. The bag of flour was ripped from her other pocket. Opened and upended. White powder shifted to the ground. Next, her knapsack was shrugged off her shoulders, her pale hands searching through. The cuts of hollow reed laid out, ready for use. The flint and steel brought to light.

The Nuit shoved her left hand into the now empty flour bag, wearing the black cloth like a mitten. It would have to do as a minimal sort of protection against the flame. It was all she had.

She picked up the jar and dumped flammable liquid into the lid of pebbles. Immediately they were coated. She set down the jar, took the flint and steel. Three steady clacks of steel on stone and a spark caught in the oil. Pebbles caught on fire. The heat of it pressed against her face.

Now she could only hope she would not be burned. Not too badly.

She scooped up a stone, held lightly between fingers protected only by a thin layer of cloth. The Nuit prayed that the bag would not catch on fire. She turned towards the battle that was still raging, rising from a crouch to a stand, burning pebble in one hand, hollow reed in the other.

She loaded the reed. Pressed her mouth to the other end. Concentrated, eyes focused on the Balicani, watching its movements, watching its horns... and then fwumph! Res turned to wind, and the pebble shot out of the other end, over the heads of the fighters--

Over the head of the Balicani, too, as the creature jerked down to snap at one of the Knights, jaws clashing, dangerous, close, deadly. To the beast, the pebble must have seemed like a particularly annoying bee, daring to buzz close at such an inconvenient time.

No matter. She would try again.

The Nuit crouched, hesitated... then snatched up a whole handful of the burning stones. Immediately she felt it, like hot iron against her palm. Ouch, ouch, fuck, HOT. Isolde gritted her teeth, rising. She wouldn't waste precious ticks taking one pebble at a time. She needed all of them, now. Even if it meant a burned palm.

Then she set to loading and shooting. Loading and shooting. Again and again. One hand already feeling like it was burning, the black cloth mitten smoldering and smoking, her palm feeling slick with sweat-- though somehow she knew that wasn't right. She forced her fingers to load and reload, forced her mind away from the pain and towards the Balicani and her Reimancy. Shot after shot missed. It wasn't enough that the creature was being held in one place! Its head kept bobbing around, and it was impossible to predict where it might look next--

Until a certain Myrian smashed into the fray and took out the thing's front leg, nearly hacking it off with one powerful, blindingly quick swing.

The beast was snapping at him and Razkar was rolling back, back, back out of range of teeth and claw. And here was her chance. The creature was focused on her teacher, its head, for once, held distrurbingly still in that particular, watchful way that reptiles seemed to have. But who knew how long this would last. Probably only a handful of ticks. Maybe less.

The Nuit fumbled to load another round. The pebble was in place. She aimed, sighting along the length of the --now smoking-- stick of hollow grass. Not much longer. She had to do it, now--

Res was summoned, white mist boiling from her cool lips. Transmuted, turned into a hard, precise puff of pure, angry wind--

Flaming pebble soared, zipping through the air--

And just barely, just barely knocked the side of one of the Balicani's horns.

Shyke! Not good enough! Isolde was already scrambling to load in another pebble with fumbling fingers that, for once, felt too hot instead of too cool--

She had it ready, but the Balicani had moved, raising its head, jerking back, how was she going to get another opportunity like the last, she'd wasted her only real
chance, gods damn her--

But wait.
A flicker of flame. Soft, at first. Then burning brighter, spreading, fire fed by the putrid, combustible sweat of the creature, flaring, licking up the creature's horn, strange red-and-purple flame that soon caught to the other side. The Balicani immediately knew something was wrong. It lashed its face back and forth, cast into a frenzy of pain, and oddly... of fear. Like every other living thing, an instinctive fear of fire.

Fire.
SHYKE!

The black cloth bag on Isolde's hand had finally burst into flame. FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, HOT, HOT, OUCH! The Nuit tore the bag from her hand, flinging the remaining pebbles to the ground where they smoked angrily against the green of the grass. Cursing and swearing, flapping her burnt hand around, Isolde tried to stamp out the bag before the fire decided to catch the jar and turn this entire field into an inferno.

She was able to put out the flames. Her boots ground the bag into the dirt and then the rest of the pebbles, too. In the background, she could hear the Balicani crying out, along with the cries of men. She knew that the fight would soon be over, one way or another.

She was having a hard time caring. She had done her part. And she had paid her price.

Her palm was burned, blistered. Black and ugly red, near-perfectly circular sections of flesh had been charred from her hand, each circle representative of a flaming stone. Ichor collected at the injury, oozing, pearlescent white against the harsh, smoky, angry wounds. Her hand was shaking. She tried to hold it still, taking deep gulping breaths, dropped down to one knee, bowing over the injury. This pain was different from other pains. This burning pain. She didn't know how she could have ignored it before, while her palm was being branded. Perhaps she had been able to with the help of the battle song, with the knowledge that she had to do what she had to do, and do it now, without pause, without giving in to weakness.

Well. Now she had to focus on covering this up. On wrapping the wound. The Nuit used her unburnt, right hand to claw open her knapsack once more, and started pawing through it, searching for any sort of wrap or cloth. Anything to stop more ichor from bleeding free.

What did his logic dictate in such a time? In opposition, what did his condition demand? When both stricken by the mortal disease and by a higher plane of mind, which one would win out?

Higher plane, was he? Arrogance. Another symptom of his sickness.

Matthew's blue eyes searched Razkar's a moment, as well as Ser Wade's. Keep his song going? It was something completely new to him. He often used his magic through voice, but he only had to target one person. For some reason, it felt like it took a rather large amount of effort to use it on more than one. What was the best course of action in this case? Should he reserve his magic for hope of preserving himself? Or was it better to apply it like asked, for the safety of all? Really, the safety of all would heavily effect the safety of him. He turned from Razkar with a short nod, Edreina perhaps the only one to see the absolute apathy in the harlot's eyes. He was in a different place now.

"If nothing is broken, feel free to stand." He paused, fingertips sweeping over certain sections of her body once more. There was perhaps a crack, but no breaks. She would be fine to move, but there would obviously be a nasty bruise at some point during the following days. The bone, if cracked, would give her trouble as well. He would have to direct her on how to handle that later on... but for now? Singing. He had to sing. "Don't go anywhere. When you see blood, stop me." He gave her a level stare for a moment, tone a complete deadpan. He didn't offer her an explanation, merely turned and stood up. Darting his eyes around, he checked for those that he knew, and those that would have the most effect on the upcoming battle. He couldn't target them all, only a few. Razkar, Isolde, Viper, and Sagitta. Those would have to do for now. Could he target all of them at once?

Setting his jaw, he flexed out his aura. He was only three-fourths of the way toward them whenever he felt the strain in his brain, like he was pushing something that wasn't supposed to be pushed. Like he was tugging something that he wasn't supposed to move. Stepping forward, he wandered out into the open, though still a short distance from the monster they were fighting. Just enough, he hoped. Or, rather, he didn't even notice. His eyes were vacant, and Edreina would hopefully realize that she was his caretaker now. He strained just a little more, sucking more and more Djed from his veins. He expended just a tad to his Auristic eyes, lighting up the targeted auras so he could see exactly how far he barely needed to reach with his magic. The moment his aura touched to theirs, he would begin to sing once more. Loud and firm, oddly calm and serene, the whore too focused on maintaining his art to notice the whirlwind of steel of hissing acid just a couple dozen feet before him. He sang and he sang, words empowered with suggestions of courage and strength, of willpower and bravery.

Blood bubbled up in his throat and spilled over his lower lip, cascading down his chin and chest in a thin stream.

Overgiving. You are pushing it. Stop it. You could damage your throat. No, no, I won't damage my throat. I have willpower. Bravery.

Courage and Strength.

Stop. You are the one singing. You are singing to them. Close your ears to the-

Willpower and bravery.

The magic became all their was, and the words were what fed it to him. He could practically see his song spelled out in the air, bursting into rains that made his skin tingle with pleasure. The blood dripping down his front was lost to him, for it didn't hurt. It felt so very wonderful. The bravery of it all. The willpower that he had.

He would sing on. Because he was courageous. He was brave. He was so very strong.

Secret :
My Battle Music is Better ;D

Oh don't give me that look.

"You aren't supposed to get hit in a fight."

Edreina laughed once, breathless, before hissing in pain, face contorting. Already her flesh was pink and angry, scored by the sharp edges of the Balicani's scales. It burned something fierce, and the pain was only multiplied as Matthew started wrapping her body, fabric being pressed tightly against her hip. "The knight needed help..." she said quietly, head tilted up, jaw tense as she attempted to ignore the pain. "Anyone else would have done the same..." And once again, the redhead's naivety was as vivid as the wound it had brought her. What she did not know was that few others would have risked their life for a stranger, even if they saw the logic in keeping someone strong alive, as she did. If the situation were to arise once more, Edreina knew that she would have done the same. Well, she might have run a bit faster.

She was perfectly content with sitting still, letting Matthew work on her until he was content and she could go back to helping however she was needed. That was, of course, until Razkar made the order that she was to stay there. At that, her eyes opened into an angry squint. But, just an instant later, her face softened and she nodded. He was right. In a battle situation, she only did more harm than good. Razkar needed to be able to focus on killing the Balicani, instead of worrying about the safety of the Svefra.

As she relaxed back against the tree once again, Matthew seemed satisfied and continued to work over her, testing her flesh, her bones, her joints. Her hip seemed to be fine, incredibly sore and would likely not support her full weight, but it would heal. Other than that, the top of her head was pounding, occasionally pierced by a cold spike that ran all the way down her spine. Even her eyes hurt with the intensity of her headache. But, as moments stretched on and she stayed awake and utterly cognizant, it was clear that she did not have a fractured skull nor any bleeding on the brain.

"If nothing is broken, feel free to stand.

As the battle continued on, Edreina itched beneath her skin at the realization that she was only a hair more useful than a rock. At least he could help with his hypnotism. Whether he chose to do as she asked or remain by her side, the Svefra would twist her torso and grab hold of the tree, bringing the leg attached to her uninjured hip beneath her. With a groan, she forced herself to her feet, favoring her injured side ever so slightly.

Standing up, she felt a bit safer; at least this way she would be able to attempt an escape if need be. From the shade of the trees, Edreina could watch the battle, and try her best not to worry so much. First and foremost there was, of course, Razkar. Her Myrian lover moved in a Gnosis-aided blur of flashing steel that gave her a spark of possessive pride. When his ax embedded itself in the creature's foreleg, the redhead cringed delicately at the screech that followed, it was a sound of pain so animal that Edreina very nearly felt pity for the creature. It was, after all, just a dumb beast doing naught but what instinct dictated. They were all intruders in its territory, yes, but the damned creature had been foolish enough to create this territory despite the strong scent of human that blew up into the mountains from the city.

Her thoughts were cut off abruptly as something ignited the creature's horn. But where had it-

Her unfinished question was quickly answered as a flurry of rather admirable swear-words bounded from tree to tree to finally land upon Edreina's ears. With keen blue eyes the Svefra located the source: the willowy blond from earlier was somehow still alive and had managed to set the Balicani's horn ablaze. Was she some sort of fire-reimancer, Edreina wondered, watching the beast writhe and screech as it was assaulted by flame. Something inside her uncoiled at the sight of the monster as it neared its end. Surely it could not last much longer, bleeding from its leg... head on fire... body nicked and punctured in so many places.

"Don't go anywhere. When you see blood, stop me."

The odd words brought Edreina back into the moment. Her blue eyes displayed a mixture of surprise and confusion. What did that mean? Either way, it seemed as if whatever he was about to do would injure him, and Edreina was torn between stopping him and waiting to see just what the petch he meant.

When he began walking out into the open, Edreina realized that she should follow him, should stay close to him. But she could not do it completely unarmed... With careful, halting steps, the Svefra stepped from behind the tree and retrieved her whip. Her eyes never left the thrashing beast as her hands closed around the heavy leather-wrapped handle, nor as she half-hopped backwards, stopping beside Matthew.

He was singing now, but she heard only the words for its effects were obviously focused elsewhere. Suvan-colored eyes were darting constantly between the harlot and the beast as she carefully observed both, following their progress. A couple of times, she placed a hand on his arms, preparing to move him out of the way as one of the warriors moved towards them or the Balicani looked at them for an instant too long. Its attacks were never directed towards the duo, however, because there were too many other insects sinking their odd not-claws into his scaly hide.

At first, she did not notice the blood. She had been expecting it to be more obvious, more violent. The little stream coming from his mouth, could that really be it? "Matt, are you okay?" she asked, shaking his arm lightly. When there was no response save for his continued singing, his blank gaze, Edreina realized that something had gone awry in his magic casting, and this was what he had been warning her of. "Hey! It's time to stop!" She stepped in front of him, blue eyes hard despite the fear that lay within them, both hands on his chest as she attempted to get his attention by pushing him lightly.

Again, he did not respond other than to keep himself on his feet.

"I'm sorry..." There were probably other ways to get this done, but Edreina had not the time to consider nor enact any of them. Instead, she cocked back her right arm - her weaker arm - and threw a stiff punch into the harlot's jaw. Too distracted to ward off the blow, Edreina cringed as the blow sent his head snapping to the side, and him tumbling to the ground. When he did not move, Edreina wondered whether it was her punch - surely she had not hit him hard enough to knock him out - or the magic he had been using. Oh come now... With as many wives as the harlot had slept with, the Svefra doubted his experience in or ability to take a punch. So, it must be the magic. Groaning, Edreina crouched and slid her hands under his arms and proceeded to drag him back into the cover of the trees. She set him against the tree and knelt to wait by his side for any sign of change. But, she had no skill in medicine...

What would she do if healer became patient?

The battle scene had turned into a frenzy of activity! Once where there were people scattered and running about in confusion, was now replaced by a group seeming to find a sense of unity. Together they had turned the tide of this most epic battle. A voice in his head seemed to belay the knot in his stomach that continued to grow as each member fell.

And when the wounded Balicani had it's primary advantage over them ripped away with a lucky shot from one of his fellow hunters, all doubt in his mind of their victory had been swept away. This monster was like any one of them...mortal! And with the sudden unification of all their efforts, this fact only became glaringly apparent.

With the arrival of a "doctor", Viper eyed the fiery woman one last time before turning his attention back to the beast. And order directed toward himself and his fellow Archers was soon barked out, and he would answer. Drawing another arrow from his quiver, he ran toward the downed creature while he loaded. Stopping just long enough to fire his projectile, he continued on.

Being close enough for his primary purpose, he found a good sized tree and stood next to it, using it as cover while he reloaded. Just in case the Balicani managed to summon the ability to spit more venom at him despite the crippling blow inflicted earlier. The order to charge was given, and Viper paused for just a moment to take in the spectacle of a half dozen men charging fearlessly at the monster to finish off what he and his fellow archers had started.

After loosing a couple more armour piercing arrows into the beast, some pinging harmlessly off it's armoured scales from a bad angle, while others sunk deep into its flesh, he noticed a new bit of devastation being wrought on it. A small flame which soon burst into an inferno on the animals face. The fire caused the Balicani to writhe about in pain, fear, and anger. But nothing at this point could save it. Not it's razor sharp claws. Not its serrated teeth. Nor even its acidic venom. Nothing! The monster that had terrorized the North Kabrin Road was about to meet its end. And it brought a small smile to his face to pull one final arrow.

The creature soon began to growl and roar its death sounds as he took careful aim for its head. Although Viper felt absolutely zero remorse for putting down such a brilliant yet deadly creature, he didn't wish it to suffer needlessly. Perhaps it was his better natured side that willed him to give the animal a release from the agony with which it now found itself. Whatever it was, Viper aimed carefully, then held his breath. A moment later, his fingers released the string thus allowing his bow to hurl the arrow toward the animal at an amazing speed. The arrow itself bent ever so slightly from the force behind it, urging it onward as it streaked through the air toward it's victim. Only the slightest whizzing sound gave its incoming approach away. Just a couple ticks later, a deep thud could be heard as the projectile impacted the Balicani's temple area of its head.

Utterly wounded, immolated, and wings torn apart. The Balicani knew that these little insects around it would gain victory, but its pride as the apex predator refused to go down just like that. It roared and screamed, spinning around and spitting venom everywhere, its aim was off and mainly hit trees. With only three functioning legs, It couldn't move far and limped... breath heaving and ragged.

"ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAR!!!"

"Finish it! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!" Ser Wade unleashed a battle-cry immediately followed by the fighting warriors and archers. He activated his gnosis and charged forward, teaming up with Razkar and the young Wade to launch a simultaneous strike to the Balicani. "Myrian! Right front leg! Wade! Jaw! I will go for its crippled leg!"

Then they were off, under the cover of three archers, two knights and Viper. "FOR SYLIR! FOR YAHAL!!!" Wade whizzed pass its clumsy claw strike and went to its already wounded leg, he activated his flux and combined with his gnosis, launched a crushing strike to the Balicani with his longsword, the metal violently contacting with the open wound, causing it to scream and dropped down to the ground writhing in pain.

Razkar didn't give it any chance to recover as the Myrian closed on its right front leg and used his maledicted ax and gladius to utterly butcher the leg. Now losing two functional legs, it could do nothing but roared in pain as it collapsed to the ground, its jaw falling... into the reach of Wade the axe warrior. The young man swung up and swung down with all his might, his battleaxe contacting the Balicani's snout, steel cleaving hard scale and bone.

Under Syna's light and the enchanting song of the Harlot, an arrow sang through the air from Viper's short bow, a stationary target, perfect. *GNASH!!* It made contact with the Balicani's right temple, the armor-piercing arrow pierced its scales and went straight to its brain. It gave a final roar of pain before turning motionless... finally slain.

................

..........

....

"Ha... ha..." Ser Wade inhaled and exhaled, he examined his surroundings. Only ten warriors are left... including himself. The others? May Dira bless their brave souls... Still, mourning would not bring them back, what was important now was this plague from the sky is finally dealt with. He raised his longsword high to the sky...

"VIIIIIIIIIIIIIICTORYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!"

Good job, guys! It's definitely and utterly dead! :D

This will be the final rotation, you can each harvest some part of the Balicani (Scales, membranes, bones). I think the horn is beyond harvesting since it's doused in flames already. :P

Whatever you harvest could be traded-in for mizas, that is your bonus. Or you can choose to keep it. :)

And then you can RP exiting the scene by going back to the Evantide Outpost, aboard the carriage, then back to Syliras (Or just go to Syliras straight ahead, up to you). I will give you my grades in my next reply.

Great job, everyone! Looking forward to our next quest! :D

Now, it would be best for them to head back immediately to Syliras. Ser Wade gathered the knights and hunters "The Order thank all of you for your brave and courageous deeds today. You shall be rewarded for your efforts. Meet us at the gates of Syliras, we will make sure Peython give what he promised..."

"Myrian, good work, your reputations were right about you, Drykas, my apologize if my words sounded offending to you, you're not like the rest of your kin. And... Wade, I'm proud of you boy..." He congratulated each warrior personally.

He then went to the Nuit and Ethaefal "Mage, thank you. It's how offensive reimancy are supposed to be used, reserved for monsters... not like that troublemaker I once caught making use of reimancy at the Great Bazaar..."

"Madame, your grappling hook may have altered the course of this battle, I give you my sincerest thanks..." He slightly bowed to Sagitta.

He then went to Edreina and Matthew "I thank you for your song, it really helps with our morale and it would be best that this brave lady here be brought to a healer immediately..." Matthew could choose to stay or not, if he stays, Ser Wade would bring Edreina back to Syliras himself, if not, he would ask Matthew to come with him by carrying Edreina.

He then gestured to the Balicani corpse, the fire on its horn and body snuffing out and leaving just tiny trail of flames left on his body. "You can take whatever you wish from the creature..."

"My knights will be stationed here until all of you have finished looting, they will escort you back. As for me, I shall take this brave lady here for healing" With that, Ser Wade trekked back to Syliras, with Edreina; and Matthew should he wished to follow.
