I understand what you’re saying and I know that I have a long way to go in learning how to let go and give a character free reign. I guess that’s part of the reason I’m here – to learn as well as to have fun. What I meant, however, was that with some characters, I stare at them and think…”
where am I going with you?” which, until recently, I never experienced with Kalina.
She didn’t bond at 9 months because we wanted her to grow up and not limit her development more than it had been with her time at the KRI (where I’d imagine she had a very minimal education, if any). To this end, she remains dependent purely because she knows
so little compared to even other Kelvics who I’ve seen and/or RPed with. It’s one of the reasons I chose this race: to watch her age at an accelerated rate so I wasn’t playing a child of 7 or 8 for too long. The problem is that the do age so fast, which means that a lot has to be accomplished!
I’m a strong believer, rightly or wrongly, in having multiple threads with one or a few people and watching those relationships grow. It’s the best type of character development and “one-shot” threads don’t achieve what continued interaction can. I could do an endless stream of single thread with people but not actually achieve anything major in terms of her actual life, if that makes sense. And of course, through that interaction, she will grow… in her threads, she spends the time learning what most characters (and players, myself included) take for granted. It’s adorable to watch and she’s surprised me along the way, when threads turn in a direction I hadn’t initially intended.

But that development and independence isn’t going to happen overnight. I can’t go from having a clueless child to a self-sufficient person just because her Master is no longer around. Yeah, she could hunt, catch a few fish or rats, but she would die, eventually.
Breaking that all-important fourth wall, she has no money. I can’t pay for any expenses as a player because there is nothing to pay them with. I can’t get her a job because she has few skills to warrant one. Most importantly, though, the thread where she learns about money hasn’t been completed and so far she hasn’t really grasped it so she wouldn’t even go looking for a job because she has no concept of work or money exchanging hands for goods. That’s the bit that scares me most – that I can’t click my fingers and make her understand all of this abstraction just to make my life easier and have her become independent. Especially when it’s already become so clear that she doesn’t get these things.
I’ve tried to take most of what you said on board, I’m only pulling out a few details here. For now, in my mind, it’s quite clear that she needs guidance. Maybe a new city is the answer, but I still need a reason/way to get her there! And a PC willing to take her in. I had hoped, for example, to have Kalina abused/neglected etc. from someone other than Marcus for a while, which would spur substantial development as well as a possible Ranuri Mark. I’m not a fan of NPC interaction for such a large role in her life – controlling both ends means I’m basically writing a novel`, in my opinion. It takes all the fun out of logging in, excited for what’s just happened.
Characters might be living and breathing in our minds, but we must continue to control them, lest they head down a road that we don’t want them to and they ultimately stop being fun to play.
Thanks, Goss, for your advice. It was definitely a kick up the backside not to give up just yet. I just need to do a lot of thinking for where I'm going to go with her, and how to get there, and who I'm going to ask for help!
