Day 45, Summer of 513 A.V.

Forest green eyes gazed steadily ahead, running unblinkingly over the massive expense of land that made up only a small portion of Cyphrus’ Sea of Grass. Today was a good day for hunting, Neci affirmed with glee, a sparkle flickering to life in her eyes as she nudged her mount forward. Stella stomped a hoofed leg once in slight protest, snorting loudly through her nostrils as if rebelling against her rider’s command. Neci, undeterred by her horse’s attitude, nudge her side with her heel once again, albeit a tad bit harder than before, forcing the mare to begrudgingly move forward.

While it was considered dangerous to venture out past Endrykas’ secure boundaries alone, the hot glare of the sun and the whisper of the breeze called to her with such force she had been on the move before even realizing it. The air smelled of salt, carried on the wind from its journey inland off the coast, and dusty dirt kicked up by the lazy gait she had set Stella into. It was a scent the young woman easily associated with the summer months, when her migrating city turned north to the coast and aimed for the border of Sylira.

The weight of the bow and arrows strapped to her back was a comforting feeling as she made her way further out in hopes of finding some game, determined to at least bring back a rabbit or a hare of some sort for dinner. Buzzards would be a nice catch as well, but with hardly any training in archery, she found the flying creatures to be rather difficult to shoot down. While rabbits and hares were easier to hunt in the sense they couldn’t take wing and fly off, the tiny critters were ridiculously fast and agile - more times than not she had set out to hunt them and then returned home empty handed.

The mount/rider duo continued down the long, winding path caravans frequented as they made haste across the grass land. While it was true that Neci was of the Drykas race, she had absolutely zero experience in the art of webbing – a magic that was imperative to know should one desire to set out alone into the seemingly never ending Sea of Grass. If simply traveling alone was dangerous, then traveling alone with no way to navigate was utter suicide. Until she was better equip to venture off into the uncontained wilderness on her own, Neci was perfectly content with following the worn caravan trails.

“What’s that?”

Neci’s eyes narrowed in concentration as she tried to make out the silhouette that had appeared on the trail ahead of her. A hand came up to shield her eyes from the harsh glare of the sun as she tried to make out the approaching figure, pulling back on the handle of Stella’s Yvas in order to halt in oblivious animal. Squinting, she was able to make out the form of a horse; and once it had moved closer, a rider mounted on its back. Stella snorted once she took noticed of the approaching party, shifting her weight from her right to left side – a cautious habit Neci learned to recognize when Stella was in the presence of strangers.

“Is that a girl? … It is! What’s she doing out here? And alone to boot!”

While Neci wasn’t one to talk, the knowledge that she was a hunter-to-be made her feel as if she weren’t just a normal girl out alone in the grass lands. She was able to defend herself in cases of emergency, able to find and gather resources should the need for them arise, and she even had her chosen strider, Stella, with her. She was perfectly equipped to handle any situation that came upon her – at least in theory she was.

In reality, all she had was a bow and a case full of arrows to defend herself with, and even then she wasn’t skilled enough to really shoot anything that was mobile. If she wanted to be creative, she could use the eating knife she kept in her bag as a weapon of sorts, but seeing how it was dull she doubted it’d have very much use in a real fight. She didn’t have enough knowledge about herbs and plant life to tell the difference between something that was okay to eat and something that would kill you off in only a matter of seconds. While she had basic knowledge of how to survive in the wild, it’d take more energy than it ought to to go around gathering provisions.

“Oy! You there!” She nudged Stella into a fast gait, quickly closing the distance between herself and the other woman who was now in clear view. “What do you think you’re doing out here alone? Don’t you know it’s dangerous for girls to be out here alone?”

Up close, Neci realized that the female was relatively pretty. It was unusual to see a woman with hair as short as hers, and she wondered what had happened to the obviously well-kept hair for it to become as it was. Her skin was tanned and her eyes were as lightly shaded green as Neci’s were dark, the light shade of brown her curly hair sported only helping to accent them. Even mounted, it was obvious to see that the other girl was much taller than Neci’s five foot two inch stature, and with her muscular build she could tell the female was used to physical labor.

OOCI hope this is okay - if there is anything wrong tell me and I'll go back and fix it. Also, sorry it seemed as if the ending cut off. I had a brain dead moment and didn't know what else to write.

The Better Hunter [Arundel]

OOCI am SO sorry this took me so long to reply to!

Juniper cantered along, rocking steadily between Arundel's muscular thighs. One hand held onto the yvas in front of her while her mare maneuvered the knolls and hills surrounding them, and the other clutched one of her shortspear. The other four were packed - two tied to an yvas bag on either shoulder. They bumped her legs as she rode along, though didn't bother her. The wind blew her hair around her face, and tousled her mare's mane. It sighed across the glassland, making the plant life all around dance and churn. It was a hot day, and the air was dry. The wind was warm, equaling out to an uncomfortable temperature. But the hotter the better, for her. She couldn't take the cold. All the bundling up and runny noses. She wanted to be sunburnt and sweltering.

They were out today just for a simple ride. Arundel tried to take her mare out every day, to keep her Seme built up to perfection, and to keep herself from getting lazy as well. It would be easy to do, sitting in her pavilion with her mother and baby sister, sewing and weaving all day. She would have none of that. Not that they'd ever force her. Working with the horses was also a clan trade, and in her eyes, even more important. The clan, her family included, had quite a few foals that needed to start being handled more regularly, and taught proper ground manners. Their dams would have already whipped them into shape, but their human handlers would refine what their mothers already instilled in them over the past few months.

Juniper suddenly stumbled over a caravan tract - neither of them had been paying attention - making Arundel drop her spear and nearly lose her seat. She grabbed onto her yvas to steady herself, and smiled at the back of her mare's head. "Sorry, love. I should have been paying closer attention." Juniper's ear twitched around at the sound of her rider's voice, and she tossed her big head at a troublesome horsefly. Surely not in agreement. Arundel leaned over the mare's neck, stretching up to scratch up around her broad cheeks, before dropping down off her back onto the track. She stooped and collected her spear, and as she was standing back up, took a swishing tail to the face. "Whoa!" she sputtered, rearing away from the whip-like hairs.

Arundel rubbed her smarting skin, leering at the mare. "Thank you." Juniper sighed heavily through her nostrils, relaxing her weight and propping up a back hoof on its toe. "No you don't. I'm getting back on." She pushed her great black hip, forcing her to shift her weight back onto all fours. She wasn't going to have her mare stumbling and making her fall off when she mounted. She'd eaten some hairs already, Arundel wasn't going to add dirt and grass to that. Grabbing a fistful of mane in her left hand, and standing at her mare's neck, and stepped around toward her shoulder, swung her right leg up high, and half jumped to get momentum. Both legs clamped around Juniper's gut, and she wiggled wildly to get herself sitting upright behind her withers. It would be a lot easier without holding a spear in one hand.

"There," she sighed, adjusted her position until it was just right on her Seme's back. Arundel tapped Juniper's left flank and shifted her weight. The mare gave to the pressure, and turned in that direction to follow the rutted path dug by caravan wheels. These were swallowed quickly by the sea, but this one seemed relatively fresh. Only a little grass stubbled the soil torn bare from the heavy wheels that looked like thin ditches. She had her horse follow these along the middle, between both furrows on either side. This one, she wasn't sure where it led, but the direction it was going to would allow her to make a roundabout route back to Endrykas. That, she could tell from the position of the sun.

She had hoped to run into something that she could practice with her spears on, and bring back to the pavilion. It would have to be ridiculously easy - she wasn't a hunter like the Emerald clan members, though she idolized them for their fine animals and skills with the bow. If only she'd come across a lame deer, or something old. But that was beyond wishful thinking. Nothing was ever that easy out here. Arundel nudged Juniper into a trot, the best gait for long distances. Hers was easy to ride - it was smooth, with a long, effortless stride. Her big hooves thumped quietly against the ground underfoot, barely audible over the sighing grass. Her hips rocked from side to side with the mare's pleasant trot, and she bounced gently behind the rise of her withers. Wearing a dress hadn't been her best move - the skirt rode up high around her hips, leaving her tan legs to dangle bare.

She found her mind wandering again, like earlier, but her thoughts went in no specific direction. She thought about the horses, how delicious dinner was surely going to be, and how much she needed to start training. Her brothers would probably pester and tease her the second she got back. Her little sister would run up and climb into her arms, asking if anything exciting happened. Sadly, she wouldn't have any fun stories to share today. But she could take her for a walk through the city after dinner, and they could people watch.

Suddenly, Juniper nickered, jolting her from her thoughts. Her mare was normally rather quiet, unless there was something new going on. Instantly, she went on alert. They were downwind, and nothing was in sight. No, there! A horse and rider were approaching over the rise ahead of them. "Whoa," she murmured when they drew closer, shifting her weight back. Her mare complied instantly, planting all feet and stopping. Arundel would have rocked forward at the sudden loss of momentum if she hadn't prepared herself. This horse could stop quicker than she could actually tell her to.

Juniper stamped her feet, either out of impatient curiosity or because of pestering insects, she wasn't sure. Maybe both. Arundel shifted her weight a little, placing her spear across her lap in plain sight, at the ready. She heard the approaching rider's words - obviously a woman, she could tell that now - called above the wind blowing between them.

The woman - or rather girl, which seemed more fitting - wasn't at all what she was expecting. And she was obviously Drykas. She sat atop a fine looking palamino Strider, looking as confident as Arundel was while horseback. Good. But the girl herself looked like a spindly little sprout. She was obviously tiny, and looked a tad pale. How did she manage? Arundel wasn't a little woman, like this one. She was muscular, average height, and a little rough-and-tumble. At least she had to be with so many brothers. Gods, did they fight. But this girl looked like she could be flicked out of the saddle, or even blown off if the wind got strong enough. She couldn't imagine how awful it must be being so small. She looked her up and down - at the quiver of arrows and bow strapped to her little body.

Arundel couldn't help but smile, as she spun her impatient horse in a quick circle to calm her stamping. "Does that mean you're not a girl, and you're not out here alone?" True, she had a Strider, so was automatically better equipped, but still. She hefted her spear, drawing the girl's attention to it. "I'm armed. I have a horse. I won't be getting lost. So, I think I can manage." She forked an eyebrow, laying the spear back across her lap. "I don't need a babysitter," she assured. This girl, though, she barely looked to be more than a child. The skepticism as she looked her over was clear on her face. The glasslands were intensely dangerous, that she knew like every other Drykas. But danger wasn't around every single corner. She wasn't going to cower in fear of her beloved home. Arundel would enjoy it to the fullest.
