Sidian cracks one eye open, and quickly closes it again before the blinding sun through the window causes any permanent damage. "Morning already? I swear - the sun's out to get me." He eases out of bed and begins pulling on his simple and durable clothes onto his slim but solid form. A plain white button-up linen shirt with a faintly visible bloodstained stitch near the stomach. Black rough-spun pants suitable for travel. Supple black leather knee-high boots, broken in from the road to conform perfectly to his feet. And finally, his long black Kalean robe, invaluable for its warmth the anonymity its hood provides. So clothed, Sidian steps in front of the dusty round mirror pegged to the wall and takes a long, close look. "My, the stress is beginning to show, isn't it?" Roughly cut black hair hangs down almost to his shoulders, over his ears, and in front of his eyes. Haircuts are hard to come by on the road. A shame - the eyes are his best feature; they're almond shaped, and a piercing green. His eyebrows are thin and shapely, almost perfectly horizontal. His nose is thin and narrow, but proportioned well in relation to the rest of his face. He has a thin, pinched mouth - tight from too long since his last smile. A black goatee encircles it. He smirks a bit when he remembers how excited he was when he could finally grow one. He has straight, perfectly white teeth. Oral hygiene was always drilled into him by his father. He has slightly tanned skin. Character Concept Sidian is a good person at heart. However, his recent troubles have consumed all his energy and made him somewhat oblivious to the people around him. His overarching goal is to find some way to bring his beloved father back from the void, even though chances are he is long dead. Sidian has a passion for knowledge and a curious nature. Lately, however, he has been suffering from deep melancholia resulting from the death of his father. He is a bookworm and an academic. Character History Sidian was born in the university town of Zeltiva. He never knew his mother, as his father was known to be a man of many engagements and few commitments. However, he was very devoted to his son and spent many hours sharing with him the research he was doing on voiding at the university. That was how Sidian's childhood progressed: many peaceful days exploring the streets of Zeltiva and pondering the ocean, and many intense nights being taught by his father. Even though Sidian never formally attended the University, he was learning many of the same things taught there, and the fundamentals of an educated life: reading, writing, math, and, of course, the basics of magic. By the time he was 22 Sidian had become skilled at the art and science of voiding. He could clear his mind and focus on the true and profound emptiness of the void. One day, he was demonstrating the concept of pull as instructed by his father. Confident in his abilities, he carelessly reached out and summoned a portal. To his horror, his father was pulled in. Frantically, Sidian tried to reverse the portal, desperately overgiving. Obviously, this was a futile attempt. Sidian coughed up a spray of blood and blacked out. Addled by his overgiving, he hallucinated a portal opening and saw his father's face one final time - a face of sheer terror and torment. His father reached out and pulled him into the blackness of the other side. Sidian awoke on the floor of his father's study, covered in his own sweat and blood. Looking around, he saw the knife his father often used to cut herbs. He grasped it, gasping for breath, and positioned the blade above his gut. The next weeks were spent in agony. But Sidian survived. Perhaps it was the will of the gods that he live like this, to atone for what he had done. He cleaned himself up, threw some basic supplies, his father's research notes, and some writing materials into a bag and set off on the first ship out of Zeltiva to seek a new life and escape the horrors of his past. He traveled on the ocean for a year and a half before finally arriving in Avanthal just before Fall 513.
