Yulio had been watching the bottom of boats coming and going from the city, which she had yet to see up close, for hours now. They were just so fascinating. She had only ever seen two boats in her lifetime and always from a distance. But now they were right there. She could reach out and touch them if she wanted to. But she was too nervous to do anything. What would happen when she touched a boat? Well she assumed she would feel what it was like. She knew this. So it wasn't actually that keeping her away. It was other questions she hadn't acknowledged yet. How would the people here react to her entrance? Would they be friendly? Would they be hostile? Or would they not even notice her?
Yulio shook her head vigorously enough to cause bubbles to form around her. She had to stop thinking about this and just do. She got low to the Riverfloor and then pushed off it hard, going directly for one of the small boats. She stopped right next to it and stared with wide eyes then slowly reached out to it. Her webbed hand made contact and she was amazed at the feeling of the thick wet wood. She felt the occasional barnacle as it went by until the boat had passed and she watched it move on. Well....that was step one.
She swam around for a few minutes, touching some of the other boats and gaining confidence. She had no idea if anyone could see her as she never looked above the water. After following a boat which she had been touching for quite some time she suddenly hit her head on something. She swore quite loudly in Char and rubbed her head as she looked up to see what she had hit. It was quite weird. There was a big pillar infront of her. It had felt like the same thing the boats were made of. She followed the pillar up until it left the water. After a few moments she slowly swam to the surface. She slowed down a lot before she went above water, making her finned head slowly rise from the water with barely a ripple. The sight she found made her gasp.
It was beautiful! She saw the boats above the water in the main port. The white sails were so pretty! And the cliffs all around. The city. The big buildings! It was all too much. She felt small in this new big world she had discovered. Her mother said the land folk had an expression. Something about the tips of ice bergs that didn't make any sense to her. But she was pretty sure that was meant to describe this situation right here.
She backed away from the sight in front of her and bumped into the wood pillar. She slowly looked up and saw the bright blue sky and sun which she had only ever seen through the blur of the water surface. It was so clear now. Whatever these land folk swam in it was a lot easier to see in. As she watched the sky there was a thump behind her that made her jump and go back underwater, staring up at the surface with fear.
After nothing came after her she slowly went back above water. But only up to her nose. There were more thumps and she flinched as shadows passed over her. It took her a moment to realize it was land folk, walking on some sort of platform attached to the pillar. She watched them for some time until she saw some blue men approach one who had just been standing around and said something to him and gave him a scroll. She watched this happen a few times until she wanted to see what was on those scrolls.
So she swam around to find a way up. She found a pillar attached to another platform that was low enough for her to jump out of the water and grab, which she did of course, hoping she hadn't startled anyone. As she pulled herself out of the water and sat down on the edge of the platform she felt the water slowly run off her skin. It was the strangest feeling. Like she was slowly melting on the outside to reveal something new beneath. She sat there and just looked at the view and let the water leave her body until one of those blue men came over. She smiled and greeted him in Char. She gasped and covered her mouth as a slight shriek came out.
What was that noise? It was horrible! It definitely sounded like Char but it hadn't sounded near the same as when she spoke underwater. She shook her head and decided to try and use common instead.
"H-Hello." she greeted the blue man. He just held the scroll out to her and said his line.
"Welcome, traveler. Here is a scroll of welcome from the city. It contains a list of our laws, a map of the city, and some advertisements from local businesses that sponsor these scrolls to be made. You can feel free to come in if you agree to our laws and turn this scroll back in when you leave so we can reuse it."
Yulio nodded slowly as she took the scroll and began to look it over. She struggled with a word here and there but managed to get a gist of it. She frowned and put the scroll down in her lap as she looked out at the view.
"So to be in this city i need a house and place to work? That is strange...all i want to do is visit...but if thats how to land folk do it." she acknowledged and began to look over the rest of the scroll. Wondering what other strange things it was going to tell her.
