The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

As the day grew closer and closer, Kavala knew it was important to act as if nothing was wrong. The truth was though, she was worried. Too many people she absolutely loved had died on the Sea of Grass. And in that worry she was absolutely torn. The Konti had the utmost faith in Radris and Hatot's ability to survive their Rite of Manhood. And in even feeling worried, she felt like somehow she was betraying both brothers because to worry felt like she didn't have faith in their training and abilities. But she did. She absolutely did. It was just too bad she couldn't go with him and fight alongside him. The Rite was for him to complete. But in her mind that didn't mean she couldn't help. That they couldn't both help - Kavala's hand stretched across her ribcage that was bare to the midriff and then moved lower across her womb. It carried life. She was sure of it now. The silver bracelet on her wrist would go to gold as soon as she began to show - or as soon as she visited the healing hospital which she knew she needed to do soon. Once she was confirmed by an Akalak healer, Kavala was certain one of the doctors there would send word to the Council and her status as 'open' would move to 'breeding' and change everything.

The Konti glanced at the man riding beside her. What would he say? How would he feel? She wouldn't go in until he left for his rite. But she wanted him to be happy about it nonetheless. And she wanted him to have yet another reason to come back home in one piece. That was in fact, one of the reasons for their ride today. Kavala was going to teach Hatot a bit of medicine, the type she could send with him, and hopefully help keep him together and in one piece long enough to get somewhere to get patched up if he needed it.

"Thank you for coming. Everytime I ride out here, something happens. This time, though, Windsong will take better care of me than the frostmarch did on the last trip. I have most of these ingredients at home, but I wanted really fresh stuff for what we are making today. Will you tell me, one more time, Hatot, what sort of injuries you've heard of happening on these rites? Piercing and slashing wounds, broken bones, I understand. But is it possible there are things that can poison you out here? Perhaps an enemy or a creature? And anything else you can think of that might not be obvious? I was thinking perhaps of an energy enhancing drink, something if you can't stop to eat or rest will keep you stimulated and going if necessary. But I might be overlooking something."
She said, thinking with her healers mind rather than her Konti heart.

Kavala was surprised Hatot was along.

She awoke bright and early the day before he'd told her he'd go, so she could ride out to gather some super fresh ingredients. She had not decided to tell Hatot she was going to be gone that morning, but wasn't really surprised when she found his stallion tacked up and waiting alongside Windsong when she ran back into the clinic to get a few more things. She might have woke him when she rose when the moon set but before Syna put in an appearence. Or he might have simply known she was up to something in her restlessness of late. The Konti knew why she was restless. Her race just simply started to roam when other females of other cultures were bent over their midden pits emptying their stomachs every morning. So, needing to ride out wasn't surprising. But when Hatot was there waiting, Kavala had only smiled and added some dried jerked meat to her bag to go with the seaweed she was planning on snacking on for breakfast from Windsong's back. The trip would take an hour or two at the most, then she'd be back in the clinic working on the things she would send along... including a poison from a puffer fish that would help bring his enemies down.

Hatot rode along Tulok’s back, finding the breeze that rushed past them, as both of their horses opened up to their full speeds at one point, refreshing. Soon they slowed down to a simple walk as Hatot moved his gaze along the ground, keeping vigilance over the tall grasses for signs of Glassbeak movements that laid in wait, as well as the possibility for approaching slavers. There were many dangers outside the safety of Riverfall’s city limits, and both Hatot and Radris had only encountered the smallest fraction of them. Still, his gaze occasionally lifted, catching images of Kavala riding naturally along the back of Windsong, her hair flowing in the winds like the waves of the ocean she so deeply loved to swim in.

Hatot then slowly leaned forward, his arms resting over the horn of Tulok’s saddle as he listened to Kavala’s inquiry. “I can’t say I’ve experienced many things in the Grass apart from Glassbeaks and Slavers myself, so far.” Hatot replied, looking out over the plains of dancing grass they rode along, falling silent for a moment as he tried to recall the various stories he had heard growing up. “Apart from the usual wounds such as cuts, stabs and blunt traumas, I’ve heard of Akalak’s coming back from their rites from bits from serpents, burns from creatures and possibly a form of magic they call Reimancy I think. There were also rumors that some Akalak had been poisoned.”

Hatot then slowly sat up in his saddle again, rolling his shoulders in a slight shrug. “Whether it was inflicted by animal, insect or poison derived by some plant and the coated to a weapon, I didn’t hear.” Hatot then added, looking back to Kavala. “Though they said the poison caused the affected area to first begin feeling like it was on fire, and lose all function. It apparently began eating at the soft tissue of their arm where the wound originated, like the poison itself was melting the Akalak’s arm. In the end, if they didn’t get him to the healers in time, they would have to cut off the limb to save the rest of the body.”

Hatot then looked into Kavala’s eyes, seeing a hint of worry there. Radris echoed a scoff in reaction, but Hatot simply felt love and adoration. Many worried about the Rite of Manhood, even Akalaks, but mainly they worried about the race in a whole over such matters rather than for the individual Akalak that was about to go out. One of them dying meant one less to the dwindling numbers of their race in the long planning of things. “Such is rumor I believe though.” Hatot then finally said, nudging Tulok’s reigns slightly, bringing him a bit closer to Kavala. “Stories told to young Akalak’s as a means of mentally preparing them for the first, to have virtually no fear, or to at least be able to fight to their fullest in spite of that fear.”

Hatot then listened as she began to bring up ideas of something to help him out during his Rite. “An energy enhancing drink would come in useful. I can’t say how long it will take to even find a Zith.” Hatot then pondered as he leaned forward, patting Tulok along the side of his neck. “Plus it would come in hand in the event I hadn’t gotten much sleep before encountering one. Perhaps some of that numbing liquid you applied to my leg wound when you treated my first injury? Or a paralytic that I could coat my lakan with. Something fast acting so that an otherwise long or exhausting fight could be turned into a short one with a simple cut to the Zith?”

Hatot then looked to Kavala once again, offering that same warm smile. “In the end, Kavala, anything you make to assist me will be appreciated.” Hatot then said, reaching out across the short gap that separated them, resting his hand along her shoulder. “As well, I‘m sure will become useful in one way or another.”

Take Something of Me With You (Hatot)

Postby Kavala on July 28th, 2010, 9:47 pm

ImageKavala nodded. Her usual grocery list for shopping in the sea of grass was growing longer. Burn cream, snakebite kit, and if she could manage it a counter to some of the known snakes. No... she couldn't manage it. If she'd had more time or thought about it sooner, she could have gathered the snakes and made the anti venom. But there was no time if he was planning on leaving so soon.

Kavala gazed across and upwards at Hatot, riding so comfortably on Tulok's back. She smiled then, suddenly, despite the seriousness of the situation. There was perfection in the moment, in riding side by side with him, the two stallions moving forward gracefully. It struck her then too, a heavy realization, that she would need to be better, stronger, more honed to keep up with him and be what he needed - what they both needed. The truth was Kavala had goals. Regardless of being a healer, she wanted to assume a place at Hatot's side - always. She wanted him to know he could count on her in a fight to guard his back and defend from that angle - just as she already trusted him to do so for her. The konti had a year to grow his child, and in that time as the warrior within her developed (for she was certain she would not give him a daughter) she wanted her own form to develop as well. All her healing knowledge told her she could do it safely - become something harder, sharper, more deadly and still not hurt what grew within.

Besides, Hatot was good for business. So too was Radris. Everyone at Sanctuary was benefiting from the two men's presence. Raiha was growing. Flick was loosing her fear. Kavala was stronger. Even the animals were incredibly less skittish with the constant practices going on in the arena to the point that Kavala might even be able to start raising warhorses one of these days and knowing they were battle safe and sword sauvie.

The Gods had a plan for them. Either that or fate did. Kavala could see it coming together neatly. Slowly, sure, but nonetheless with a strength that would mean it would last longer and durability was of the ultimate importance in the world they lived in. Kavala nodded when Hatot continued to speak of poisons. That was a hard one, countering something that she wasn't sure would be the cause. She listened further, nodding, because everything he asked was doable, ultimately, other than countering the poisons.

"It's good that they are prepared. The boys and men, I mean. I want to think of as many things as possible - be prepared like that in life. And to teach others to be as well. It is one of the gifts in life, that we can always move forward and never go back. There are so many people in other cities, even among the Konti in Mura, that don't want to think of the dangers in the world. They live in a bubble that makes it harder to fall when they do so." Kavala said softly, then reached up and placed her hand on his when he stretched the distance between them and touched her on the shoulder. She gave him a soft look full of affection and pride, though she didn't mention the word love or tell him how she felt. Kavala was one that thought talking was next to useless once what needed to be said was. Instead, she'd put effort into action where it was best served anyhow.

The horses pulled apart slightly as Windsong shifted to turn and follow a slight gorge in the grass down to the edge of one of many of the tributaries of the Blue Vein River. It was a rather large creek where she halted Wind and slipped off. "Here's as good of place as any. See the growth along the shore? That's the plant that makes your woundease, the numbing agent." She said, turning to dig into Windsong's wither pack. She pulled out a small collapsible shovel and began digging at the vegetation until she pulled up a clump of roots. Kavala harvested three large roots, leaving the vast majority of plants to grow unhindered. And then she gestured to one of the few trees that flanked the waterway. "Can you take the small hatchet from Wind's bag and peel away a small part of the bark? I need the cambium - -the inner bark, about two sections the size of your hand. If your careful, you can use the hatchet to peel away the bark, then remove the cambium, then sorta tuck the bark back up and the tree will heal over well." Kavala instructed, tucking the roots away in Windsongs wither pack after a quick rinse in the stream. She helped Hatot find the hatchet and got out some burlap to wrap the precious bark in when he was done.

There was a few other things she grabbed - some wild berries, a clump of what looked like grass, and some green algae looking substance that seemed to grow along the rocks in the margins of the creek. The algae she tucked into a glass jar while she explained what each was for. "The berries are to snack on..." She said offering him a handful while popping one into her mouth, and then gesturing at the glass jar that was fairly large for its type. "This is for your energy drink. It looks completely inedible but it will be delicious when I get done with it and will keep you going for quite a few days if need be. I'll prepare a flask of it, but this is all we need of the algae." She added, planning on showing him how to make each and every one when they got back.

"The Camas root we still need to find. It will be out on the grass somewhere... a tall stalky blueish purple flower with clusters like of six petals that look like blue snow." She added. Then paused before swinging aboard Windsong. She turned and looked over the creek. It was shady on a day that threatened to be hot, and provided privacy in a place where the grass stretched on forever. "It's pretty here, isn't it?" She said, trying to find an opening to tell him what she wanted to tell him. But somehow the words sounded strange in her ears - almost forced - though she meant them. "It's strange how such beautiful places exist hidden away from the world." She looked at him, shook her head gently, and laughed.

Then she swung aboard Windsong and waited for him to follow.

Take Something of Me With You (Hatot)

Hatot nodded as Kavala spoke of preparation, and of people living in a safe little bubble. “Life is not lived staying in a city all of the time. Your vision of wanting to grow and teach others to grow, it’s something that many may have, but very few take action towards. Your’s is a presence that could very well stir nations one day, Kavala. No matter what happens in the future, don’t lose that. Not ever.” Hatot said before their horses separated then, and began heading towards a small gorge.

As Windsong halted, and Kavala slipped down off the horse’s back, Hatot did the same with Tulock, eventually following Kavala into the creek. He listened to her words, observing the plant closely, noting it characteristics as she began to dig one of them up. “Good to learn. Can they be grown back at the gardens in Sanctuary, or do they only grow in creek beds like this?” Hatot then inquired as he began looking over the roots when they became exposed. “Also, is the agent within the plant that causes the numbing found in the leaves, stalk or roots, and can some numbing be achieved from the plant in it’s raw state, or does the effect require the process of Philtering?”

Hatot’s face then focused on Kavala, watching her lips move with a certain mesmerized expression, showing great interest in the process overall. Hatot could likely outfight most anyone he met out on the plains, but when it came to knowledge of what he could use that nature provided, he was greatly lacking. “Of course.” Hatot said as he slowly began making his way towards Windsong, pulling the hatchet from the bag before heading towards the tree she pointed out to him. Rather than swinging the hatchet strait into the tree, Hatot pressed the blade of the hatchet up along the tree, adding pressure as it cut into the bark. The process was slow, but damaged the tree less as he eventually peeled back the bark of the tree slowly. He took a moment to inspect the cambium itself. It’s color, it’s texture, everything that distinguished it. After a moment longer, he began pulling the cambium away, using his hand as reference as to the amount Kavala had instructed. Holding the ingredient in the palm of one hand, he then began pushing the bark back up against the tree.

He took a slow step away before a subtle movement caught his attention. Looking back, he noticed the corner of the bark he hand peeled back. Reaching out he pushed the peeling corner back, only to find it roll forward again when he removed his hand. This process repeated several times as Radris’ voice seemed to slither out from Hatot’s lips. “Think you can beat me, you petching bark?” Radris grumbled for a bit before his hand slammed flat along the tree, pressing hard up against the tree. “You will submit.”

After a long moment, he finally removed his hand as the bark finally remained in place. “That’ll learn you.” Radris finally said before slowly walking away from the tree, his gaze falling to the bark.

By the time he had finally reached Kavala, his head slowly lifted, revealing golden hues once again, revealing that Radris’ appearance was merely temporary for the time being. “Here’s the cambium.” Hatot then said before peering over what Kavala was currently working on. When the handful of berries was offered, Hatot grasped a few, popping them into his mouth, chewing slightly for a moment as he observed the taste as it sent a small tingle of electricity of taste jumped around in his mouth. “We should possibly grab some of these in the future and make a pie using them.” Hatot then suggested, tossing a few more into his mouth. He then looked down as she mentioned the energy drink keeping him going for days and a slow smirk crossed his lips. “For days? Perhaps we can test that sometime, when we have a few days to ourselves? Alone?”

It was something that was unexpected, and was more akin to something Radris would say, but the suggestion was uttered with Hatot’s voice. Pondering on it might suggest to Kavala that the influence Radris and Hatot were having on each other was increasing. He slowly nodded when she talked about the Camus root, following her back up to the horses, offering a helping hand as she mounted Windsong. He soon looked out to the grasslands as she spoke of it’s beauty. He slowly moved around, stepping towards Tulok. “Stranger still when such beauties are overlooked. It makes them hidden in plain sight. Too many things in life get overlooked.” Hatot said as he slowly mounted Tulok, looking over to Kavala for a short moment before his attentions were directed back to the grasses, gazing over them more. “Perhaps a quiet afternoon and a pleasant meal here someday after my Rite? Such could make the place more beautiful if spent simply idle, enjoying it for what it is?”

His golden hues then gazed over the land, already searching for the flower she had described. “Is there anything else you would like to tell me before my Rite?” Hatot then asked curiously, sensing a certain reservation from Kavala.

Take Something of Me With You (Hatot)

Postby Kavala on July 29th, 2010, 8:03 pm

ImageKavla flushed slightly at the compliments and then chuckled. "If my skin was blue and you and I were having a different sort of relationship, that might be true. But being a Konti here - I'm not so sure what you say is true." She said softly, smiling at him all the same for the encouragement he always offered. Kavala was no-nonsense when it came to harvesting plants, but she wasn't nearly the teacher Hatot was. So when he asked her a pointed question about the woundease, she blinked a moment, and then nodded.

"I'm sorry. I don't normally bring people with me when I'm harvesting or get people to help when I'm making things. Let me start again. The plant is Calium. It only grows along wet saturated soils like these creek beds. You take the big roots and peel them, boil them until you can make a pulp. Then once you have the pulp by mashing them like you would potatoes, you need to put them in a condenser and distill the liquid off until all you have is the extract. I can show you how to do all of this. About a cup of root mash makes an ounce of woundease fresh. Once it is made it will keep three weeks easily without spoiling. So no, you can't just make it without philtering... though I'm sure the mash would give relief in a pinch though not as concentrated."
Kavala said, tucking the plants into her witherbags on Wind.

She laughed a little, leaning against her horse, as Radris attacked the tree then gently tried to replace the bark. The Konti tipped her head back and called out ... "Give it a minute. The tree needs to secrete some sap that will act like glue to hold the bark in place. Sorry.. I should have said that up front..." Laughter followed her words across the short distance as Radris finally declared victory on the tree. When he returned to her, Kavala smiled and gestured to the tree. "Cyphrus poplar. Grows along creeks only. Its bark is really concentrated, so all we have to really do is shred it, cook it, mash it, and then curdle it with vinegar, like you do milk, and strain. Then we'll add some nice tasting things to make it palletable and call it good. Probably some whiskey or something for Radris.. just a shot or two. You'd like that huh?" Kavala said, switching suddenly her tone and language to address both as if they were one.

"They are rubyberry.. good huh? But I don't think we can use them as a pie. If you eat too many they will.. uh... cause you to void your bowels all day long, though some people just vomit instead. There's a bean that does the same thing.. Castor bean. They make castor oil out of it. Rubyberry is much better. But that's why I only gave you a handful."
She said with her eyes twinkling. "However, if you wanted to play a trick on someone... a mean trick... you know where to start." She said, growing quiet again as they mounted up and headed out of the creek bed.

"Yes. I'd like that. I'm always open for some time away. It gets crowded sometimes around home... not that I don't like it that way."
She said quietly, suddenly wanting to point out that they were alone now. Sometimes just watching him made her heart race, her mouth grow dry, and other parts of her get ideas she probably shouldn't get. It made her really want to be with him a lot. Probably more than was healthy. "The Camas are a short ride away. There's two types though. One is deadly and one is very healthy. I'll have to show you the difference." She said, shifting on Wind's back. It was odd how Hatot casually sat his saddle while Kavala rode bareback with only her Yvas. It would be too easy to abandon Wind for Tulok and take advantage of the alone time before they went on to find their camas.

"But yes... after your Rite.. lets come and have a picnic here. Especially if we get to swim in the creek afterwords."
She said with a smile. Kavala turned from Hatot and concentrated on her riding, the horses nudging up against one another as they walked side by side. The Konti was looking for gopher holes and snakes in the grass.

When he spoke again, she turned and looked at him. Her face grew soft and wistful, but she didn't speak at first. After a long silence, enough for three to five breaths, she spoke out once more. "Yes, there's something else I need to tell you... but I'm not sure how to do it. It's important but not something I... well... Yes." She took a deep breath and offered him a smile - almost apologetically. "You are going to be a father. Sometime three seasons from now, on the cusp of the fourth. Spring." She said softly, not sure how he'd react. To her it was glad news for so many reasons. It gave her a year of not having to explain why she wouldn't take to another Akalak's bed. The Council would release pressure off of her. She didn't have too take up with any strangers, at least not until Hatot's child was born and her body had rested. But it was more than that... much more. Her child would ensure Hatot's status as a future leader in the community. It would give him more reason to come back safe from his Rite. And if... the worst happened on his rite and he didn't return, she'd get to keep a part of him with her forever.

Kavala didn't know how to explain all that to Hatot. Just maybe she didn't have too though. The Konti glanced over at the Akalak riding beside her. Her expression said it all. Joy. Sorrow. Relief. Hope. they were emotions Kavala probably couldn't have shown last season. But now, they slid across her face easily - unguarded - as she waited for his reaction.

Take Something of Me With You (Hatot)

Hatot gave a slow shake of his head, looking over to Kavala as she spoke of her doubt over her words. “Your race or your status have nothing to do with it.” Hatot then said, gazing fiercely into her eyes, trying to beat back her own doubt with his gaze. “The only thing that can truly hold you back, is yourself. Rebellions rise up to overthrow despots. Groups of slaves eventually ban together to fight for their freedom. It all inevitably starts with one individual, their wish for change, their desire to achieve it, and their presence that draw like minded individuals to follow them.”

--------------------

Hatot slowly nodded, taking mental notes about the Calium plant, his fingers slowly running along his chin as he observed the areas Kavala pointed out, taking it in as the roles of teacher and student reversed. “What about practical applications, like headaches and soar muscles?” Hatot then simply inquired before quickly shaking his head. “Well, small point and there are likely other remedies that would be more practical for such ailments. The practice of Philtering though, I’m totally oblivious to for the most part. It may take several failed attempts before I’m able to find success, so I’m hoping you may find your patience with me in such, and the deliberate failures that Radris may cause?”

----------------------

Hatot looked down as Kavala then began explaining the Cyphrus poplar, as well as the process of it uses, which he imagined would go into the energy drink she was creating. Radris’ red hue of colors then flashed in their airs as Kavala mentioned adding whiskey to the mix. “Now you’re talking my language sister.” Radris suddenly said, a smirk spreading across his lips.

A slow chuckle escaped his lips then as she explained the consequences of eating too many Rubyberries, a hint of mischief glinting in the corners of his eyes as he considered eating several of them before giving control back to Hatot before sitting back and laughing at the results. His gaze then fell down to Kavala as a devious smile mixed with lust in his eyes fell upon her. “You’re giving me ideas now, some that I think would be fun to explore.” Radris said as a sudden slap to Kavala’s rear was given. “You think the Elder Council would banish me if I sent them a couple of those pies?”

----------------------------

Hatot had finally been given control back as they began riding, he smiled to Kavala as she accepted a future date to back and spend the day leisurely, something that Hatot felt would be beneficial for both of them. So much time of late, had been spent in training and preparation for his right, that a day spent just idly laying in the open plain and enjoying each other’s company, would be a welcomed day indeed. He smiled, looking at Kavala as the sun caught her skin and hair just right that she just seemed to glow, her radiance almost blinding to his eyes. He could lose days simply watching her, he felt. Watching her work, watching her train, watching her sleep. She did them all with and never lost any of that appeal she carried in his eyes. Radris saw it too, though in the light of the fire that burned within her. “I don’t swim too well, but I certainly wouldn‘t deny you a swim if you wished it.” Hatot then replied to her. “So long as you don’t tease me too much when you see my pitiful attempts at swimming.”

Hatot then began to sit up strait, motionless as he listened to Kavala speak of his child, now currently growing within her. A look of surprise crossed his features, as though the world around him had suddenly changed. And indeed, it had changed for him. He knew, with those words, his life would never be the same again. Though it may have been a surprise, at the same time, it didn‘t frighten him either, something Kavala could see as the calm look of contemplation crossed his features. “So, what are we going to do about this?” Radris then echoed in Hatot‘s head. “As if you need to even answer.”

“Indeed.” Hatot echoed back to Radris, turning Tulok in front of Windsong, bringing both horses to a sudden halt.

Kavala may have looked at Hatot in confusion then as he slowly slid down off of Tulok‘s back, circling around the side next to Windsong as he looked up at Kavala. His arms then reached up, picking Kavala up and pulling her down off of Windsong despite any protests that she may have voiced. “The Camas can wait.” Hatot then said as he set Kavala to her feet before him, keeping one hand around her back, pressing her close to him. His other hand slowly reached up, brushing strands of her hair out of her face as he looked down into her eyes, his hand coming to a rest along the side of her face as his thumb slid gently along her cheek.

Then slowly, Hatot leaned forward, pressing his lips softly against her own, his eyes closing and his head tilting slightly as he leaned her back. The kiss was soft, affectionate, as deep in emotion as it was in contact. It lasted for what seemed like an eon to him, but in reality was only about a chime. As he slowly drew back, both of his hands then raised, cradling her face as he looked deeply into her eyes, a smile crossing his lips. “I know you said to both of us that you never needed a reply, but you will have it anyways Kavala. I do love you, we both do.” Hatot then said to her. “You came into our lives and shook the very foundations of which we were accustomed to living, Radris and I. And we have become better for it.”

“And now, you‘ve done it a second time.” Radris then suddenly said as his arms lowered, picking Kavala up as his arms rested around her legs, just below her rear. “Though it‘s unfortunate we can‘t wrestle as roughly as we do, the reason behind it is worth it in trade.”

The color in their eyes then suddenly began to change again as hues of red and gold began to swirl around in the iris‘ of his eyes, mingling with each other until their color became orange in color. “Don‘t worry Kavala,” their voice then said, a mix of Hatot‘s calm tone and the gruff sound that gave Radris his growling voice mixing together in an almost harmonic way, “we may come back a little battered from our Rite, but we will, come back. That much, we promise.”

Take Something of Me With You (Hatot)

Postby Kavala on August 4th, 2010, 12:23 pm

ImageKavala met Hatot's gaze, holding it for a long long moment before she looked away, glancing off into the distance. She held the look a lot longer than he might have guessed she would, but her progress in her self confidence had come slowly. He could tell she sometimes just waited for bad things to happen - almost like she invited them because if they came it would be a relief from the waiting and vigilance. Kavala didn't expect anything good to come of life perhaps because what he'd known of her life thus far lent her to believe that tragedy was inevitable. It was thought process and a self-destructive pattern he'd been working to actively overcome.

Sometimes he succeeded beautifully.

Sometimes her past was too close and he couldn't break through. In those times the more she smiled, the more she woke up screaming at night even though everyone pretended it never happened in the morning. It was only the quiet woman, the one with no emotion in her eyes that seemed the stablest most able to handle the troubles in life. Kavala was so many people at once at times - especially recently - as if her life was in flux. It was, in fact, almost a joke between the two sisters that Kavala was so much in transition that Akela didn't know exactly what Kavala's desire was at any given moment.

Mostly, the Konti had been attempting to keep out of everyone's way while getting all her regular work done on top of the exercise and training she'd added to her own routine. And, she'd started taking naps in the afternoon - just brief ones - but still enough to regain some energy to make it through the evening.

She seemed to be lighter today, less moody, as if she'd made a decision and planned to stick by it even though it was a weighty one.

The konti smiled at the Akalak and laughed lightly at him. "Hatot... I'll teach you what I know. Don't worry. But be patient with me. I'm not like you. I've never taught anyone anything. But just ask and I'll show you. Philtering, medicine... I'll answer your questions. Just ask good ones, because honestly I am no teacher. I won't think what to tell you until we really work on things together. Learning about plants isn't hard. But its easier to learn them one at a time, like you explain meditation to me. You take the day to soak in the plant, learn its uses, where it grows, what it means to the world. One a day only. I'll start you on a study if you'd like." She said smiling slightly.

They already had very full plates. But somehow, they seemed to be at a place in life where they could take it, and even more, if what was weighing on her mind got shared with him.

Then he prompted her to tell him what was on her mind, and just as easily as that she did. A different woman might have set up the situation a bit or dropped a few hints so he was more prepared for what she had to say. Instead, she simply took a breath, told him, and kept going as if she hadn't said a word at all. When Hatot's big Zavian stallion cut off her smaller swifter buckskin, Kavala met the Akalak's gaze, alarmed and confused. She hadn't expected him to cut off the strider and force them both to halt or collide. The Konti brought her horse to a stop without seemingly moving on his back. Wearing no headstall or saddle, the horse responded to her change in body position rather than any artificial aid or spoken word.

She started to speak then closed her mouth as Hatot moved. Hatot had Kavala off her horse and pulled up against him before she could react. The Konti wasn't sure what he was going to say or do. In a way she was scared, worried that it would change their dynamic, one that she'd grown very accustomed too. Kavala didn't want Hatot to treat her differently, and she certainly didn't want Radris to start handling her with kid gloves. But other than that she had no expectations, no idea, if Hatot was ready for everything her words implied.

But he gathered her to him and drew her attention, forcing her to look at him and truly see the men behind the bright intelligent eyes. A rough thumb trailed down her cheek and another hand displaced her usual comforting shield of hair. He always made her look at him. And when she looked she always saw both of them. Normally though only one was looking back a time. In this instance though she oddly saw both. And that sight froze her long enough for Hatot to bend her back and kiss her gently. Truthfully they didn't kiss much, not like others did, for their kisses tended to erupt into other things rather quickly and uncontrollably. Kavala liked to taste him, nuzzling his bare chest when he drew her close to him in his sleep or when she shifted and used one of his thighs for a pillow. They were kisses of a sort, but not the type he gifted her with in that instant. It was a sweet soft kiss of innocent love untainted by duty or debt.

She smiled into his kiss, returning it gently even as she lost her ability to breath and brought her hands up to wrap firmly around his waist. He started speaking, but it took her a moment to realize what he was saying. When she understood, the words flowed over her and soothed any last doubt in her mind about what she'd just said.

Kavala hadn't wanted Hatot or Radris to tell her they loved her. Especially not then, not when she'd told him so openly, because she didn't want it to add urgency to him or pressure him into feeling something he might not want or have the ability to feel. She closed her eyes under the words letting them echo across her form. Love. He'd said it. No, they'd both said it to her. Both. Kavala opened her eyes again seeing the truth of it in his gaze. One of them, she suspected she knew which one, suddenly hoisted her up, drawing her even closer and she wrapped her arms around his neck suddenly. She should have laughed but she was still too stunned to do so. Being held like that reinforced the difference in their size, but Kavala didn't care. She'd swore a long time ago that she'd make up for her slight size in strength and agility so he'd never have a complaint about her not being able to keep up or hold up her end of the burdens life threw at them.

And then, finally, their eyes melded together and they both swore they'd come back. There could be no clearer message, no more determination in the world than what they showed her in that instant. She smiled then, softly, though he could see her lips tremble. Kavala drew in a breath, leaned in and rubbed her scaled forehead against his deep blue brow gathering her thoughts and calming herself enough to be able to speak.

The healer didn't want to make a speech. She truthfully was rather bad at sharing her feelings. Hatot made it easier verbally while Radris had helped her break through barriers physically. But still, for her it wasn't the easiest thing in the world. Gently she wiggled, squirming until he firmly set her down and she took a slight step back so she could look at all of him at once.

Her hands slid from his neck and down his arms to grasp at his hands, drawing them up and gathering them to her heart. She bowed her head over them, gently kissing the top of the artificial fist she'd made of his digits. "Thank you." She started out, her eyes not releasing his for a single instant. It was such a heartfelt sincere phrase that it hung between them as if it were a tangible thing. Azure pupils were blue flames, like the hottest part of a fire just below the flickering orange. "There.. there were so many times I wished my own death. I wanted the pain to end. I cannot tell you how debilitating it is to want to get away from something so bad that death looks like you're touching the Ukalas on a direct invite from the gods. I.. I prayed to Rak'keli to end my life. I tried to end it myself." There were scars on her wrists, wounds he'd probably thought were from the same man who'd carved up the rest of her bare flesh. But it hadn't been.

Some of it she'd done to herself. Most of it had been others though. And those others had broke her so thoroughly that there was barely anything left to put back together. But somehow, someway, Hatot and Radris had managed just that. She blinked back tears that had no place and opened her mouth to finish speaking. "I was so mad when Rak'keli didn't answer my prayers that I couldn't help but turn away from her for a little while. I wandered around Riverfall like a ghost until I saw Sanctuary's property and knew what I could do with it. I knew what I wanted from it like a sudden inspiration or a dream experienced awake. It was the first thing I thought to want in three months when I hadn't even wanted food, water, or rest." She admitted. "Slowly, my faith came back but deeply shaken. I had a silver wristband on my wrist that denoted I was free to be a plaything of any of your kind that wanted me. That's a really hard thing, you two. It was... yet another thing I questioned. I didn't want one slavery to turn into another. But I was... so wrong about it. I was wrong about a lot of things. And I cannot tell you how grateful I am that She didn't let me just die or end my imprisonment through the release of death. I... no We have a purpose now. We have goals and dreams and ... there's so much promise in the future. It's never going to be easy. But I am so glad I am not missing this life with you. And I'm so completely grateful to be the mother of your child, you two." She said softly, releasing his hands to reach out and touch his face.

"I know you will come home. I have every confidence in your ability. I always have had. But I'll wait every day on the cliffs of Riverfall while you are gone until you return home safely. You'll do well. And you need to go because you have a lot to prove to everyone in your life. You need to prove to everyone you are as good as I know you are... and you need to prove it to each other. We'll be here waiting... both of us. And all your friends, for I know you might not see it now but you have a great many of them. And you have a purpose and a place here - both of you - that Riverfall cannot be without. And... I'm just honored... so honored to be alongside you in this life. I've done nothing to deserve it thus far, but everything here on out will definitely be to prove I am good enough to keep it." She said softly, fiercely, reaching up to drag his head down for yet another kiss.

She didn't miss the blending of the two. Nor did she miss the camas they were standing on. But it could wait, her men could not. And so she kissed them with all the force she could muster to tell them how much she loved them.

Their eyes once again began to shift in color, as Hatot’s golden hues were now at the forefront as he leaned his brow forward into Kavala’s as she pressed it up against his. He slowly lowered her to the ground as she began to squirm slightly in his embrace. His hands lightly rested along the undersides of her arms, his fingers sliding along her scaled skin the length of her arm as her hands trailed along his neck, arms and eventually resting in his hands. His gaze lingered in Kavala‘s eyes, almost swimming in them as she began to speak. He didn‘t say anything, but simply listened at that point as Kavala‘s words rang, important in both what she said and how she spoke. Hatot knew this was a time for listening as she revealed something more of herself he never suspected, but at the same time didn‘t find surprising. Knowing what she had gone through with the slavers, the mental and emotional scars left behind with the physical ones would have waned anyone‘s soul.

His thumbs slid along her fingers and knuckles as she continued to speak, talking of her new awakening upon finding Sanctuary, about her reservations of her sudden status within Riverfall. He couldn‘t imagine it from any aspect in the end. He never had to go though the physical and emotional terror that Kavala had, only to be rescued and be put into debt for it. It was an aspect of Riverfall that Hatot had never fully agreed with, but in the end their race was on the line. It was likely a decision Hatot couldn‘t make himself, perhaps a trait he had inherently picked up from his mother.

He then slowly smiled as she spoke of their life, his hands coming to rest along her hips as she released her grasp before cupping his face in her hands. He could get so lost in that touch, in her eyes and voice. It was like an intoxicating drug to him, one he could not get enough of. When she spoke of her faith in him, he felt his own in himself boost. Between Kavala and Radris‘ own brand of motivation, there were times Hatot felt like he could achieve anything. He felt his head tilting, however, when Kavala stated she wasn‘t deserving, and was about to disagree with such. However he felt Kavala‘s pull, and his head instinctively lowered to meet her in her kiss, returning the love and passion she gave as his hands pulled her closer, his arms wrapping around her lower frame once again.

A slight wind blew, whispering approval over their love as their kiss continued, immeasurably long in his mind. When they had taken a moment, their brows resting along one another again as Hatot‘s kept his arms wrapped around Kavala, he let another smile appear on his face as he gave a slow exhale. “Kavala, you are far more deserving than you think, and I will continue to say so until you see it for yourself.” Hatot said slowly, his hand raising as he grasped one of her hands, pulling it down before laying a kiss to the center of her palm. “Your hands aren‘t the only things that have healed. You have given Radris and I something else to feel aside from rage, anxiety and guilt, and even now you give us hope, as well as a desire and drive to be better than we even are now. Our Rite is to be done, there will be no escaping that. We do it, if for no other reason, than to ensure that we can make a better life for both of us, and you as well. That we have proved ourselves to you is enough, and that is what truly mattered in the end.”

Hatot‘s hand then slid down along Kavala‘s hand a little further, until his thumb eventually hooked along her bracelet. “You will not wear this indefinitely, that I will promise you now.” Hatot said, sliding the silver bracelet along her wrist. “In the end, no matter what I will have to do, we will not have the one we love bound in any form of servitude, except to her own desires and wishes. We‘ll see that bracelet removed from your wrist whether we have to pay for it or fight for it. It will be done one day.”

Hatot then gazed into her eyes, once again falling silent as he then just pulled her into him, embracing her fully as the side of her face rested along his chest, finding comfort in it that even seemed to give Radris a mellow disposition. “Fate, I believe, has large plans for both you and I, Kavala, and I am just relieved to have you at my side for them. I can think of no other that I would have there with me to see that horizon.” Hatot then finally said as he turned his head, resting his cheek along the top of her head.

Take Something of Me With You (Hatot)

Postby Kavala on August 9th, 2010, 6:07 pm

ImageShe loved kissing him. Kavala could loose herself in Hatot's scent - his touch, taste, and the warmth of his breath on her face. Radris was a bit more difficult to deal with, but even his pawing had its own endearing quality. So long as he kept his mouth shut, she was fine with it. Hatot's words weren't always easy for her to hear, and even less easy for her to accept. He pushed her self value way too much sometimes, trying to help build her up when she'd been so thoroughly torn down. It was attention she didn't want, words she rejected because sometimes she swore he couldn't see into her soul the way she knew her way around therein. And there was darkness in her. There was a rage and grief and pain that sometimes overwhelmed her. The only way she forgot was when he made her feel so utterly needed. When he kissed her, tasting her lips and twining his tongue with her own. Kavala felt free to press her body up against his, reminding him of what he could have and distracting him from words she knew he was going to try and say. Even as he lowered her to the ground, she hoped for sex - for the distraction of it, the utter release, the powerful feeling she felt knowing how badly he seemed to always want and need her. His body was not to be dismissed. It couldn't lie.

Not that Hatot lied either. He didn't. But it was just easier taking care of those needs than being held against him and told how much value she had when she believed none of it. On her hands and knees, being blanketed by his body as he lost control of himself buried within her was far better in her mind than being cuddled up against him and comforted like a child. She didn't want to be a child in his mind, though maybe he didn't see it like that. Kavala was young, far younger than most of her kind would ever consider settling down, especially with an Akalak. But time and circumstance had forced her into servitude in Riverfall. And truthfully if she had her choice, she couldn't have said she wanted to walk any other path, not really. She didn't belong back on the grasslands. Mura was too tame of a place for the violence in her soul. And she just felt better being an Akalak's Nakivak where no one seemed to mind about her history or past.

"You are both so much more than you give yourselves credit for as well. I'd rather talk about that, and how proud I am of you both, than talk about me. I'd rather show you both, right here and right now... than have you continue this conversation." She kissed him again, loving to do so, slipping her pale tongue into his mouth and nibbling on his lower lip after the light taste. She knew she could distract him with the promise of a tryst in the grass. Even now, with just his arms around her, she was ready for him - and more importantly wanting him.

If she'd been taken into service by anyone else, Kavala knew that she'd have felt like a whore. But with Hatot it was different. He'd never claimed her contract, told her what he was going to use her for, or demanded his rights as an Akalak. Instead it had been love, a gradual coming together, and the child within her was a product of that... not of careful ritualistic breeding.

Other Nakivak, indeed the Undanas himself, had explained to her what would happen. A man would present himself, take up her contract, and demand visitation rights daily if not more. She would have to be clean, well fed, and allow the Akalak an intimate physical examination. Often, temperatures would be taken to track spikes in fertility, and she'd have to allow him to inseminate her daily or as often as he liked until she got pregnant. The other Nakivak had warned her too, when she'd first went to the initial meetings to be 'trained' on protocol, that the males didn't often insist upon exams for pregnancy until the women started showing or mentioned it themselves because the physical relationship often became important to the males for their own needs. And since the Akalak supported the Nakivak completely during the pregnancy, often the support came in more generous portions if the physical relationship continued on until it couldn't be carried on any further due to an imminent birth. Most of the Nakivak were so grateful that providing this service for the men was indeed no issue. In fact, in their own quite ways the women often advised each other of techniques and practices - both to get pregnant faster and to draw it out longer.

So while it was not openly talked about, the Nakivak were no more than glorified mistresses used as brood mares.

Hatot had spared her all that. She wondered if he took any heat from the other Akalak for their relationship. If he didn't, she knew he would.... as soon as he tried to free her. "Hatot, you know as well as I do that they won't let me go. It's why they gave me Sanctuary and gave me the seed money for the first herd." She watched him finger the silver bracelet and smiled slightly. "I know what they taught me when I first came here and this was put on. It's not a slave collar but it might as well be. The Council decides on my debt. They own me. And rightfully so. Without the Akalak I'd be dead. How long... how many... who sometimes - they decide my life. They could even say I need to give more after this one, and you can't be the father. I think you might have upset a few people who were looking forward to an available Konti when you moved into Sanctuary. I know even more will be upset that you were so swift to plant your seed. You know how it is supposed to work and you know how it really works. I very well could be here the rest of my life like this. And if so, I'm content with it. Its not done for spite or cruelty. It's done because its necessary. Even I understand that, just as I appreciate and understand that you'd fight for the right. That means a lot to me." She said softly, curling up against him. She would have his son first though. And that was what counted. Living long lives, the Akalak were patient. They could afford to wait, bide their time, and watch the world pass by. The Konti did the same thing in many ways

But something he said made her go back to his words of a few minutes ago. The words made her angry, just a little, and as she lay on the grass curled up in his arms, she stewed on it just a little. "Hatot, you and Radris should never have to prove anything to anyone. Ever. I don't want to hear you ever talking like that again. Do you hear me? I mean it." She gave his tunic a little shake before freeing him of it. She wanted to touch his bare chest and wanted to trace his scars with her tongue, nibbling at them with her small white teeth. She wanted him to forget about making promises he couldn't keep in regards to the Council and she wanted him to stop talking about how much she meant to him. She knew it already and the talk just embarrassed her.

So instead, she touched and tasted him, boldly freeing parts of his body from his clothing so she could distract him properly with her mouth, making him forget what he was thinking and planning so he could just feel for a while. Kavala wanted to give without taking, to show him she cared and wanted things for him he would not ask for on his own. She knew her actions were wanton, aggressive, and forward, but she didn't care. She was his for the duration of the pregnancy and she was going to take full advantage of it. If he tried to touch her, she'd push his hands away, pinning them beneath him or with her own digits. She wanted the moment to be about him only and what she could do to bring him pleasure and release.

As for Hatot, he'd probably see through the discomfort for what it was and the actions to counteract it - a distraction tactic. He knew the Konti and how uncomfortable she was with words like 'love' and 'commitment' and words to indicate promises and taking care of things. To many had been broken in her life - too many failures had occurred. She carried scars deep down and thus tended to keep everything on the surface without letting it sink too deep where things like promises and affection could truly effect her and wound her all over again.

"Don't talk, Hatot. Just relax. Just feel. I'm not going to let you be coherent enough for talking for long anyhow. I don't want you to think just because you managed to plant your seed that you get out of this aspect of our lives."
She said firmly.

But still it didn't stop her from initiating physical intimacy in a way that danced across and left emotional intimacy behind. She was far better at showing him than telling him anyhow. For her, to hear him cry out in release was the best of "I love yous" rather than all the talking in the world. Plus she wanted him to understand how much she still needed him physically, even being pregnant, so he wouldn't be afraid to touch her if he needed too. The hardest part, she decided, would be to reassure him that the roughness they sometimes enjoyed was still fine as well. She was strong, fit, and almost fighting ready. Their 'workouts' only helped that.

Take Something of Me With You (Hatot)

Hatot slow felt Kavala’s hands tugging lightly at the tails of his shirt as he kept her embraced for a moment. He could feel the topic at hand was always one she didn’t truly like discussing, but he wanted to say the words, and to show it. In the end, however, Kavala was right. As an Akalak, Hatot knew that actions tended to speak so much louder than words. It was a creed of many Akalaks and most often, save for the Council of Elders deliberations, Akalaks often spoke more with what they did in life, rather than what they said.

“Let any who feel cheated from touching you come, I will send them back with broken hands and fingers.” Hatot simply said, a fire almost lighting the already golden hue behind the color of his eyes as his hands traced over the back of her own as they both began to lower along the grass, laying down. “But, if you so wish, I will remain silent of it from here on out. However, I will still never stop thinking of it, of your freedom from the service.”

He’s gaze never left her eyes now as she continued to speak, letting his ears take in every syllable with the importance they carried in her tone of voice. He did want her, there was no denying that. His very body reacted to it as her fingers began to slip under the fabric of his tunic, sliding it upwards as her fingers slid over the skin along his sides and chest, until it was finally freed from his body, all the while as she scolded him for him thinking he had something to prove. It made him smile, honestly, as the scolds she carried were usually directed towards Radris, and for some odd reason, her stern feature seemed to excite him all the more. “You are so very sexy right now.” Hatot then said in a amused voice as the clinking of his belt buckle echoed out, his waist nudging forward as subtle pulls were given to the fabric of his pants.

He then suddenly took a slow deep breath as his head leaned back, his eyes rolling into the back of his head and closing as he felt Kavala’s touch run deeply. He began to reach out to touch her, to run his fingers first through her hair, but soon found her fingers quickly lacing between his own and pinning them to the ground, slightly slid under his back. It was something he hadn’t expected, and thus had no resistance towards. Truly, he hadn’t much resistance towards anything at that point, as the motions Kavala made continued to put any forethoughts he had in his mind aside, and think only on the pleasure he felt. His own breathing became short at times, as he felt that twinge of pleasure threaten to steal his very breath away for a short moment, the muscles over his entire body tightening for an instant before relaxing.

When she stopped to finally say something more, he fought back a disappointed look that his face wished to display over such, and looked to Kavala as she spoke. His elbows then slowly rested along the ground, supporting his upper body and propping himself up for a better view of her entirely. “I concede,” Hatot replied softly, a smirk rising on his face shortly after, “but I will return this pleasure to you, count on that, Kavala.”

Please, do not upset me. I would hate to unintentionally rip your throat out in a fit of rage.
