◾Character History
◾ Pre-Creation -
Born to very poor parents, Mira's mother died while she was giving birth to her. Her father was forced to raise her to the best of his ability, but because he was forced to work long hours to earn pay to keep them alive, he hired an elderly woman to help him. Mira grew up hearing stories about her mother and treated her elderly nanny as if she were the grandmother she never had. Both her father's and mother's families had long since passed away, so Mira grew up with only her father to keep her company. She did not receive much education due to his low income as a fisherman, so he taught her as much as he could. He would often bring her along on his small sail boat in the Suvan Sea. Because they lived in Syliras, her father could easily get to his boat tied down at the harbors and fish either for pay or for food.
Growing up, she found many things to do to keep her busy. One activity she enjoyed was learning about the many plants and grasses that grew outside Syliras. The city was crowded and dirty, and she never saw beautiful flowers unless her father took her out on trips to the forests. This was how she learned to avoid poisonous plants. She also picked up on herbal remedies from the old woman who looked after her, learning how to treat burns or small cuts by wrapping them in healing plant leaves.
Another skill that was a necessity for her to learn was how to make and repair clothing. Her father's clothes would often get torn during his fishing trips from the many hooks he used. She repaired not only his clothing but also wove dresses for herself when they had spare cloth.
Because she had no mother, it was up to Mira to cook her meals. Luckily, her father had given her a journal written by her mother. The book contained all sorts of helpful advice and tips, such as preparing food, sewing, and what kind of plants she could pick for food. Mira would often cook meals for her father when he came home from a series of long and harsh fishing trips.
The old woman caring for her eventually passed away, when Mira was about sixteen. Mira had not been interested in any relationships with other young men and women her age, as she spent much of her time helping her father, repairing clothes, tending the little garden she kept outside the city walls, or going for a swim in the sea. She loved being in the water, just as her father did. She also did not want to marry because she knew it would take her away from her father, and she knew he needed her help to survive. She vowed never to leave his side until he died.
His passing came sooner than she had expected. He left for a fishing trip during the winter, despite her pleas for him to stay. They had run low on food and he had not had a very productive year, resulting in extremely low funds. He left anyway, promising to return soon with something to eat. He never returned, and after weeks she assumed he had been lost at sea or killed. She survived during that time by visiting family friends and with her own resourcefulness.
Mira eventually found a job working as a server at a local tavern in the city. It was now her responsibility to ensure she kept the small space that she was allowed to live in. The little room has no windows and is located in the lower levels of The Castle. Her time was then spent working at the tavern, cleaning, cooking, gardening, or taking in clothes from other people and repairing them for a small fee. All of this was still not enough to raise the money needed to buy the room outright, so Mira decided she was better off finding a new home in a new city where the rules were not so restrictive and she could probably afford a bigger space for a cheaper price.
