Today was a rare clear day on the Sebakem Ocean, a place which had certainly experienced a large amount of heavy rainfall this current season. In the bowels of the Saga Shooter Annalisa Marin was taking especial advantage of the calm seas. Her seasickness was something that had taken a little time to get over, indeed the first few days aboard the ship had been absolutely miserable. Part of her had desired nothing more than to toss herself over the edge of the ship, just to escape the damn rocking of the vessel. A few of the crew were probably hoping she would, having a wizard aboard had certainly seemed to make a few of them uneasy.

Anna had managed to work out something of a deal with the captain, as long as she kept any magic other than Aeromancy to the bottom deck then she wouldn't be tossed overboard. That had been the condition for her to be taken aboard the ship, so naturally she had agreed. Thankfully being known as a 'foul witch' was enough that everyone else purposely avoided her, so she had plenty of time to herself.

Time that she was using well, or at least trying to. Glyphing was made rather difficult unfortunately given the lack of supplies, as well as the uneven rocking of the ship. However Anna made due with what she had, the voyage had yet to completely ruin her supplies after all. She intended to work with a few more complex sigils today, as well as looking into seeing how Voiding could be used in conjunction with it.

It was actually something of a blessing that her portals were so small at this stage, they would make her experiments much more controlled and less likely to get out of hand. First things first though, she needed the sigil drawn.

The wizard sat at the small side table, a candle hanging from a beam nearby and her bedroll spread out on the floor near the back of her 'room' if this space could be called that. She was isolated down here, alone with no one to check up on her so it was a blessing and curse. For the solitude she was more than willing to put up with the cramped sleeping conditions, it provided her a place to work without fear off being intruded upon.

A piece of dry parchment was on the desk before her, sitting and waiting to be used. She had an image in her head of what she wanted, a relatively simple thing in the grander scheme of things but a little bit more tricky than a scroll. She wanted to create a sigil that could contain a tiny portal to the Void, and then have it open once the trigger was activated and close once a switch was utilized. A relatively simple thing in theory, but a bit more complex in practice. The trigger could be simple but what was really getting her was the need for a circuit to compete the cycle.

The wizard bit at her thumb, musing over the quandary. Scrolls were simple by this point but sigils like this one which possessed multiple functions were reaching out a little bit. It was all about balancing the complexity needed without compromising the integrity of the whole construct. No easy task, as any glypher would say when musing over a new sigil construction.

"Perhaps... perhaps if I built a series of paths that eventually connect back to the Focus that holds the Void. The switches would be activated in a sequence which would in turn return back to the point of origin to eliminate the portal." She mused aloud to herself.

Of course, that all depended upon activating the right switches at the right time. It was also possible that the entire parchment might just disintegrate once the circuit was complete, rather than doing anything to the portal. Still it was certainly worth a try, its not like she was going anywhere anytime soon.

The wizard dipped her brush in ink and started on the inverted triangle that made up her focus, a small thing as she needed to scale for her portal as well as conserve space on the parchment. The focus was an easy glyph by this point, a natural glyph that had long ago been ingrained into her muscle memory.

Due to the small size of the glyph it didn't take her very long to make it, soon enough she was on to starting on the Barrier around the Focus. This one was a little more tricky, the small size bade her to use her smaller brush and to take her time with the drawing. She didn't want to mess up in the construction here. Three glyphs within the Barrier were a little different than the others, Anna referred to these as Connector Runes which in turn connected the path to both the Barrier and the trio of Switch Glyphs she was starting on inside of the Barrier.

One of these Switches would activate the magic within the focus after the Trigger activation travelled down the first Path. This effect would then set off the Switch on the opposite side of the Barrier, which would then send the effect down another Path and cause a Switch on the receiving end to activate, the effects of that would then travel up another Path back the original Barrier and activate the last switch with which would close the portal to The Other Side. That was the theory anyway.

The wizard decided it would be best to start on the circuit first, so with a slight crack of her neck to the side Anna prepared for the work ahead.

Anna's brush moved in careful calculated motions as she started on the first Path, a far cry from how confident her strokes had been during the drawing of her Focus. The Path was possessed of smaller components and Anna certainly didn't want to mess up on the Path, it would be rather unfortunate and likely mess up the signals transmitted down from the Switches. Switches were often, wrongly, used interchangeably with Triggers, which was a very large mistake and one that she had scolded more than one student over.

Triggers were vastly more complex than a Switch could ever be, without a Trigger then the sigil's functionality was limited to simple things like her augmentation glyphs. Switches were simply things which activated different parts of the sigil, separating it into sequences rather than one thing activated all at once. Together the two could create rather complex sigils, like the one she was attempting.

The wizard squinted as her brush moved over in small controlled strokes, carefully teasing the parchment and creating the Glyphs with utmost patience. A slight feeling of annoyance rose in her mind as the boat rocked slight more than normal, nearly causing her brush to skew and ruin the Path she was so carefully drawing. It passed and Anna continued with finishing up the series of Glyphs, making a mental note to be more aware just in case. It would be a shame to have to start over after coming so far.

The tall woman finished the Path and then immediately started on the Barrier, ringing the tiny Geometric shapes around a small blank spot with care but more ease than with the Path. The Barrier was used more frequently by her than the Path, meaning she was more accustomed to actually drawing it when the time came. It was still more difficult than the Focus, but the familiarity was comforting as she drew it.

A Connector Glyph bridged the Path and the Barrier, which finished the Glyph in is entirety. She paused for a moment gazing up at the ceiling to roll her shoulders, it had probably been about fifteen to twenty chimes since she had started. Being hunched over parchment that long tended to leave her back a little sore. Silently she envied the abilities of scribes to have the endurance to do this for Bells on end. It was rather impressive.

After a time of trying to work the soreness out the wizard was back at her work, drawing a Switch in the middle of her freshly drawn Barrier. The Glyph was a little more difficult than the average Barrier, as it was normally only used in conjunction with Paths. It had other uses most certainly, but Paths were where it was most commonly seen.

She finished up the Glyph, glancing over her work with an eye for any flaws that might effect the overall effectiveness of the Sigil. So far she wasn't seeing any which was a good sign, maybe she might actually manage to pull this off. With that thought in mind she started on her second Path, this one aiming right back to the point of origin to the other Connector Glyph on the Barrier. It would then look like two Paths ran parallel to one another, one directing effects outwards and the other directing them right back where they started.

Anna was as careful with this one as she had been with her other one, her caution reflected in each tiny stroke. Once this Path was done all that would be needed was to create another Path leading to the Trigger, which would then complete the whole Sigil. After that... well the Void was a bit of a trial and error subject to broach unfortunately. Sometimes a bridge between This Side and The Other Side was formed, other times she was not so lucky. Hopefully this would be one of the lucky times.

The ink wrought Glyphs all formed a cohesive and rather neat Path up from the Barrier, moving to connect with the Connector Glyph easily. The Switch would then, hopefully close the portal, or at least effect if in some small way. Maybe. Hopefully... The theory was sound. The tall woman sighed as she finished the Path, rolling her shoulders again as she prepared to draw her next Path. Thirty chimes in, and still needed to finish up the rest of the Sigil. The whole thing was rather tiring.

Anna turned her attention back to the parchment, waiting as another wave rocked the boat slightly. The she started on the last Pathway.

Anna's brush worked in rigid and set patterns, the geometric shapes of her individual glyphs seeming to possess an overall balance to them that seemed logical and easy to follow. It was nicely ironic considering that she was one touched by the very essence of Chaos and Disorder, then again life seemed to be filled with these little ironies. The wizard did not think too hard upon it, keeping her mind focused upon her work was the most important thing here.

The Path came into existence, moving upwards towards the corner of her parchment where the whole thing was going to come together. Once here she glanced over the series of glyphs, nodding to herself that they were indeed good and nothing would interrupt the signal to be sent down it. With this in mind she drew her Connector Glyph, starting on the Barrier that would house her trigger. Anna's triggers tended to be rather simple as of late, verbal commands activated them or simple things like someone touching the trigger. Nothing specific yet, though Anna was hopeful in being able to craft something better soon.

Soon enough the ring of Glyphs surrounded the open space that her Trigger would soon occupy, her brush dipping in ink to ready it for the last and most crucial aspect of this whole sigil. Her hand hesitated slightly over the spot, making very certain that what she had in mind would actually suffice. Self consciously she looked over her existing work, as though trying to pick apart her own work for flaws. Seeing no obvious or glaring ones she took a deep breath to soothe her nerves, starting when her hands were steady.

The Trigger didn't need to be overly complex, it just needed to complete her needed functions which was to activate the Switch on the opposite end to open the portal to The Other Side. After this the chain reaction was supposed to occur just as she had prepared it, at least that was the hope and the theory.

When someone touches this Trigger, send out a signal to activate the Switch at the opposite end of this Path.

That was what she codified as the function of the Trigger, her brush moving very cautiously over the space. It danced and the shapes came to life, prepared to carry out the singular function that she dictated. Slowly but surely it came to existence. Idly Anna wondered if it might be possible for her to use her Glyphs to protect the knowledge hidden in any notes she might write, perhaps it was worth looking into. Glyphs were very much like reading and writing for wizards, but the differences in Glyphs guaranteed that no one would be able to easily decipher the exacts of them. Sigils or functions were easy to discern, meaning of individual glyphs was not.

Anna cast out the thought as she finished the last touches on her Trigger, leaning back in her chair with a grateful sigh. That had hurt her back a fair deal, no mistake about it. Hunching over the same position for chimes on end was hardly good for her. Likely she'd end up with a permanent hunch if she stayed like that for much too long.

She stood from her chair, taking a minute to get her balance as the boat rocked again. The wizard stretched her arms up high, bones letting out slight popping sounds as they received use. The tall woman rolled her wrists after this, cracking her neck this way and that to deal with any soreness that might remain. Luckily she didn't need to sit down for this next part, simply focus on the Void and create a bridge between This Side and The Other Side.

Her light ministrations complete the wizard moved to stand over the side table, her ink stained fingers flexing and curling slightly. This would be a little more difficult, just creating a portal was rather difficult but using it with Glyphing was something she had never actually attempted. Anna assumed that unlike reimancy it wasn't so much to do with storing a portal, but rather with recording its functions upon the Focus so they could be duplicated. It was a sound theory, as it still involved the usage of Djed and the interaction with the Focus.

The Wizard closed her eyes and prepared for casting, her breathing cycles starting up.

Anna's breath came in through her nose and slowly out through her mouth, the rise and fall of her chest becoming more measured and noticeable. Her eyes were closed as she attempted to silence the sea of chaos and impulse that her mind was warping into. Each breath taken calmed a corner of her mind, clarity being closer and closer to being within her grasp. Focus was sharpened by the actions, the thing she wanted to bring about becoming closer to actuality. The darkness of the Void encompassed her mind slowly but surely, its finality resonating with her mind.

The Void represented destruction at its purest, reimancy was certainly destructive but it also possessed constructive capabilities. The Void could only destroy, it could only take and the things it did give up were likely twisted beyond reason. There was power in controlling such a force, in owning the ability to bridge dimensions and destroy that which displeased her.

Her grey eyes opened and her finger hovered over the Focus, not touching it but close enough to where the portal could likely record itself upon the Glyph. Her mind more prepared for the action she was to take the wizard started up a chant in Nader-Canoch, the incantation she used most when dealing with the Void.

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

The words so defined the nature the Void, it was so infinitely vast that one could not truly comprehend its massive nature and all encompassing size with but a single glance. Non-wizards of course would never understand just how useful and powerful the force of another dimension could be. Their perceptions were so pitifully limited by a single one, their eyes blind to just how much power laid beyond the norm. Magic itself was power, the ability to harness and change what was natural and bend it to the whims of the caster.

Anna focused her Djed to the singular point of her finger, concentrating and chanting quietly. Often times she accidently drew res into her fingers rather than succeeding with her intended goals, considering her lack of comfort with the Void it was to be expected that there would be some stumbling blocks at first. However Anna was confident that, like reimancy if she just kept at it she would eventually become nearly peerless at the discipline. It was just a matter of practice.

The wizard continued to focus when nothing initially happened, willing her Djed to empty out the space below where her finger was pointing. Again, nothing happened immediately, it was nearly a full chime before Anna could feel the familiar sensation of Djed being drained from her body to fuel a spell. A tiny black vortex opened beneath her finger, a gateway into The Other Side.

Anna eagerly fed the tiny thing more of her Djed, feeling her vital energy being sapped quickly as she attempted to expand the portal somewhat. It was rather like trying to fit the ocean into a thimble that just never stopped taking in water. It was so tiny, yet it took so much just to expand it a little bit. Maintaining and merely keeping it open was a chore in and of itself, draining upon her Djed to an unbelievable degree. It was rather like when she had first started studying reimancy. Back then it had taken so much just to conjure up a tiny flame, as compared to now where she could create a large firestorm and summon waves of molten lava to incinerate her enemies.

The portal stopped expanding soon after Anna had started trying to make it bigger, waves of fatigue washing over her. The construct was licking the Focus, as through it wanted to consume the entire parchment. By this point she was both hurting but also feeling rather good, the euphoria of controlling so destructive a force weighing heavily on her mind. Compared to the sheer joy of reimancy Voiding was much easier to resist delving too deeply into. Still, the overgiving from the previous season was starting to cause aches up her wrists and the back of her skull. Best to end this quick.

After a few more Ticks Anna decided it was time to close the portal. She willed the core of the portal to fill with matter, collapsing the tiny swirling vortex quickly. The air where it had occupied seemed to shudder slightly, returning to its natural clarity a half Tick later.

This accomplished the wizard prepared to test and see if her sigil had actually worked. Carefully she maneuvered one finger over the Trigger, her wrist aching slightly at the movement. After a counting to five she lightly tapped the Trigger, the activation protocol she had placed with it. The effect was not immediate but it was quick, the signal travelled down the Path and activated the Switch Glyph. The next effect was more immediate, the Focus activating the recorded effect of opening the Void portal. A tiny black portal opened, swirling in the air.

As soon as it opened the Switch across from the first one activated, sending another signal down the second Path. It was received by the Switch on the receiving end, which in turn activated and sent a signal to the last Switch at the opposite end of the last Path. As soon as the final Switch was activated the portal just shut itself, closed near instantaneously.

Its overall function complete the parchment simply crumpled to dust, the carefully drawn Glyphs gone from existence now that there purpose was served. Anna felt triumph well within her, pleased that the sigil had functioned properly and that the theory had proven sound in actual testing. This opened up possibilities for new experiments, possibilities she intended to fully explore.

She allowed herself to sit down, her thoughts already turning towards the Void and away from Glyphing entirely. Anna was curious about a few things she had read regarding its usage, specifically the forces of Push and Pull that could be placed upon them. Idly she started wondering if perhaps now was the time to try something a little more ambitious. She was on a bit of a roll today, so it seemed to make sense to actually strike while the iron was hot. She felt fatigued, but she thought that at the very least she had enough Djed left for this little experiment. Nodding to herself she started to cycle her breathing.

[SO] Glyphs and Voids

Anna cycled her breathing for a good ten bells, trying to come down from the euphoric high brought on by having used personal magic. Personal magic was indeed very similar to drugs, once you started using it you never wanted to stop using it. You wanted to keep casting, to keep going to see just what you could do next. Then there was the feeling of sheer godlike power, wielding the forces beyond the ken of most mere mortals. Anna for her part reveled in the shock and horror that slowly dawned upon the faces of non-wizards, as they watched her play with the tapestry of reality like it was a mere toy. However, magic was no toy. It was not for a mere thrill seeker and it could easily destroy those of lesser minds.

Thus the wizard focused on clearing her mind, dispelling the clutter from her thoughts and sharpening her focus. At the end of the allotted time the wizard idly plucked her brush from the tabled and started to draw a Focus Glyph upon her palm, intending on at least having something to make this journey into new territory a little bit safer. The stylized inverted triangle was quickly and easily drawn, a simple thing but it would allow for smoother and more focused casting. From here she drew a series of tiny Glyphs up from the Focus and along her index finger, these were simply there to direct the flow of Djed up towards where the portal would manifest.

This done Anna set her brush down and started concentrating upon the space above her outstretched index finger. Djed was quickly gathered and focused towards the Glyphs on her hand, moving easily along the directed routes. The wizard was pleased and started up her incantations, confident that she could pull this off and learn something new about the Void.

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

The wizard focused upon a singular point above her finger, willing the gathering Djed to move up and empty the space of all matter. As always nothing happened at first, then Anna noticed a small amount of translucent liquid forming. She cursed, res had been generated rather than a portal being formed. It was extremely annoying when she got her wires crossed.

She sighed and drew the liquid back inside of her body, the minuscule drain on her Djed being partially replenished by the action. With a heavy breath she started to focus her Djed again, willing it to empty out the space above her finger. As always, nothing happened at first, it was about thirty ticks before a tiny swirling vortex was born and the wizard felt her Djed sucked from her by the actions.

Eagerly Anna fed the portal more Djed, expanding it slightly and focusing on keeping it stable. After she was certain this was accomplished the wizard plucked a strand of her own ebon locks with her free hand, making very certain to keep her full attention the portal in front of her. This would be her gauge for the Pull she intended to try and generate.

The wizard focused intently on the portal, willing the force of attractive energy to be placed upon it. Nothing happened at first, no fluctuations it her Djed or changes in the strand of hair drifting in the air. After a few ticks of focus though something did indeed happen and she felt it rather than saw it.

The speed at which her Djed was being burned sped up immensely, the aches in her wrists and the back of her skull becoming throbbing very quickly. The wizard soon felt a dribble of blood trailing down her right nostril, no doubt she was sporting her signature nosebleed now. Everything was warning her that her limits were rapidly approaching but Anna needed to see this though for at least a few more ticks.

Her mind was awash in the desire to simply pour everything into the portal but she ignored it, now was not the time to give in. The volume of her incantations increased so that she could actually hear it over the roaring urge pressing her on. She kept control despite it all, but she knew if this didn't end very soon then things would get very messy.

The black strand of hair was lightly tugging at her finger, trying to move towards the light attractive force exuded by the portal. Anna could actually feel the light tug play with her eyelashes, it certainly wasn't strong but it was there. It was trying to force something into it, trying to consume something into the darkness beyond.

Quickly Anna simply cut off the flow of her Djed going into fueling the portal and jerked back in her chair, her breathing heavy and sweat pour down her brow. Curiously the portal seemed to keep its attractive quality even without her fueling it, causing the portal to close much faster than normal when left on its own. That was curious to say the least.

Anna felt rather exhausted for the exertion, desiring nothing more than to rest her weary eyes for a next few bells. Still she had learned quite a bit today, much of it would be invaluable going forward, especially if she hoped to advance as a Wizard of Sahova. Slowly the tall woman got to her feet and started shuffling towards her cot, wanting nothing more than rest.

That was an interesting read, though honestly the color of the words on the black background makes it very hard to read, combined with the font. Other than that great thread :) PM me if you have any concerns!
