Appearance: Apperance, what can one do without having an appearance? Standing at 5’11”, Desmond is a young man, though barely out of boyhood, with short messy brown hair and hazel eyes, the shadow of a beard and moustache often on his face. From a certain perspective it could be said he isn’t particularly handsome to the point of standing out in a crowd, not that he himself wants to stand out, but he isn’t an unattractive person on the same note either. His body is of an average physique, a lithe form more suited to quickness than brute strength, but it is honed and athletic thanks to the best physical trainer of all: a hard life in a violent city where one often find themselves fighting for their lives, as well as the bloody job of a mercenary.
When it comes to his attire Desmond never goes for anything flashy, not that he could afford to do so. One constant feature is that Des is rarely seen without his gladius which he keeps girded at his waist or the steel gauntlets on his fists, always prepared for a fight if he needs to. With a stern expression and furrowed brow most of the time, Desmond could come off as a somewhat rough and serious person initially. That is what a hard life can do to the appearance of someone’s visage. Though if you get to know him better a gentle smile will grace his lips at times, in rare moments of peace and happiness that are granted him by life in the lawless city of Sunberth.
Character ConceptIn truth, Desmond could be viewed as a simple person with simple goals. A simple, peaceful life is all the young man wants, away from violence and lawlessness. This wish was not granted to Desmond though; instead he has to irk out a living in Sunberth while raising his young sister. The city and the life he has lived thus far have very much molded Des into a person that is not quite so simple as he himself wants to think. Though of a much better manner and temperance than what one would expect from a typical foulmouthed and uncouth Sunberthan, he is still prone to be rough and callous, prone to a degree of sarcastic humor at times. Most definitely he is a stern and patient individual, a realist by all terms. He shares a trait common among many, greatly caring for those he holds dear but unconcerned for the average stranger if they don’t catch his attention. Unafraid of confrontation and a fight, in fact enjoying them greatly, yet at the same time knowing when it would be a foolish decision to risk one’s life. That is the kind of person Desmond is seen as by most.
But everyone seems to have a flip side to their personality, at least most people. Same goes to Desmond. Get past his hard exterior and you will find the simple man Desmond thinks himself to be. A warmth and loyalty is what you’ll find, and not only that, you will find a very thoughtful individual. A person who wants to find a way out of the drudging life he is in, but unfortunately has found himself dragged into the life that he himself objects to.
Now, I think there is one last thing to note; yes, Desmond’s morals and ethics. True, he was taught by his mother to uphold certain standards of manners and behaviour and by no way is he an amoral individual, but his job and life have brought other facets into play. If need be he will help others, but only if there is some kind of use in it. And when it comes to situations where he needs to bring death upon someone, being the realist he is Desmond will not hesitate to send a soul to Dira if he needs to.
Character HistoryDesmond Svante’s parents were Clyde and Nora Svante, an unlikely couple of a hardened mercenary and soft spoken herbalist. How they came to meet and marry is a story in itself but it is not these two whose tale we’re listening to but that of the boy who was their son. Desmond was born and raised in Sunberth, a truly lawless and hard city to grow up in. He was raised as good as he could have been by his parents, taught the ways of surviving the dangerous playing grounds of the city by his father, while at the same time taught the gentle ways of manner by his mother, who insisted to the father that their children will not be ill-mannered and thuggish people like a certain someone. Some years will pass and the family welcomed a new addition: Leah.
Growing up, Des went through a rough and tumble childhood. Just playing around on the streets meant that the boy’s eyes and mind became accustomed to the constant looking out and wariness typical of Sunberthans. But not only this, when Leah became old enough to venture out with her older brother, Des found himself becoming his sister’s protector, watching out for her and fighting if it came down to that to defend her. This would continue to go on, as it is even now after the naiveties of childhood. As the boy became older, Des became more of a fighter much like his father, while Lea learned of herbs and medicine from her mother.
If the tale had simply gone on in this manner, the overprotective brother watching over his sister, parents teaching their children the workings of their professions, father teaching son and mother the daughter, it may be just a story that is worth noticing once and then nothing more. That is far from what it is though, since life always throws in twists that make the lives of our characters oh so sad and exciting.
Spring of 512 AV, the storm arrived. A Djed storm to be exact, but most of you should know that this was no ordinary storm. It wreaked havouc upon the flimsily built buildings of Sunberth, bringing many inhabitants into Dira’s cold and final embrace. Desmond’s parents were one of the lives lost during the storm, crushed under the falling rubble of their home. In the aftermath, the Svante siblings were both orphaned and without a place to call home. And what were they to do now? Scavenging what little was left of their belongings and selling it, the two set up camp at Tent City, at least until they had the Miza to buy an apartment. Now where would that Miza come from? The answer was found in Desmond following the path of his father: mercenary work. So the young boy who was barely a man found himself forced to pick up the sword to find a way to live, for himself and Leah.
An year has passed since then, and things look a little better for Desmond. Frugal living and the small income from mercenary assignments and odd jobs around the city allowed for the purchase of a small and flimsy apartment. It may not be much, but it was a start. Life looked like it would be a bit more easier, if only by a degree. But it was from here that life would become much more interesting, as the future held many plans for Desmond.
What are those plans though? Why don’t we find out?
