[Sultros Blades] Chain Construction

With rings made and cut it was time to start on the first section of chain and he had decided on a simple box design. He’d contemplated various forms of sheet chain and in linking them together but the more had thought about it, the more a simple curtain of individual chains appealed to him.

The weave was simple enough, at least once he had reminded himself of it with a little practice. He started with a section of six into two, which meant that it was just a simple double chain that even his apprentices could have handled without thought. Next he folded back the end two rings and then separated the middle two rings. This allowed him the space to insert two more rings into what was effectively the back side of the two end rings that he had folded back. With those inserted the box nature of the chain was starting to appear, and now he was able to continue folding back the end rings, spreading the middle rings and inserting once more.

Once he had reminded himself of the pattern, and it always took a few attempts to get his fingers to slip into the patterns of movements that the weaving required the the work progressed quickly, the main thing that slowed him down being the need to close the rings each time that he added a new pair. This was the sort of job that he imagined to be the male equivalent of knitting and the comparison always amused him, but he could well imagine sitting in a darkened room with just the light of a fire glowing redly and casting glints from the metal while his fingers automatically slipped rings in and closed them. In truth it wasn’t so dissimilar here where the light came from the forge and the darkened room which was still quiet before the morning rush in the castle as it awoke. He also found a degree of amusement in the realisation that this work, intended to solve the issue of noise was also quiet and doubtless his closer neighbours offered prayers of thanks for a night of undisturbed sleep as a result.

The work was relatively tedious and he was tempted to pass it on to someone else to do, especially since such a simple weave would be a good training for them, and at any other time he might well have followed up on the idea but he had a feeling in the back of his mind that this process, tedious as it was, was also a form of meditation which allowed him to brush very closely on the states for the use of djed, regardless of whether that was for personal, world or divine djed use and that was in itself an interesting discovery for it opened once more in his mind the question of how chain might be used as a basis for some interesting djed effects by making use of the way that the metal was interwoven. Success in that could lead to some very interesting possibilities going forward which were possibly applicable to weapons as much as armour.

[Sultros Blades] Chain Construction

Postby Eanos on November 19th, 2013, 11:35 am

Having measured the chain accurately Eanos was soon dismayed by the time that this project was consuming but he pressed on regardless, his fingers becoming more adept at the process the more rings that he wove into the chains. First one chain was complete then another and it wasn’t too long before he had five completed including the larger rings in a heavier gauge wire which would fix them on to the curtain pole.

He stopped at this point largely because that time he had whilst weaving had given him time to think and in a way which was quite unlike most of his crafting which required his full attention on whatever step was happening at that time.

His thoughts had followed the usual path regarding the need for the creation of these shields against noise, and about how they might be adapted for other purposes. That adaptation was something he needed to experiment further with for his previous attempts had not been as conclusive in his mind as they might have been and he wanted to be very sure of the results. The shielding of a doorway would be the largest shield that he had so far attempted but equally it was or should be well within his abilities to do so. On the other hand he was attempting to create individual shields on individual items which would sit together. He thought that a single shield placed across all of the chain strands would work, probably as well and be easier to do. But at the same time it would lack the flexibility that he wished to experiment with, hence the desire to shield each strand in turn. He knew that in the long run he was making more work for himself as the shield would slowly deteriorate and need replenishing. He could see quite easily how that could prove to be a problem since he already had one shield in the forge and now he was creating more and these for a relatively trivial purpose. How long before the simple upkeep of recharging the shields started to weigh heavily on his djed reserves?

That though was an aside, for his contemplation whilst in the meditative state of building chain had allowed his mind to make an obvious connection, obvious in hindsight in any case. Rather than create and task the shields one at a time he could do them all at the same time by making use of glyphs. Whilst his fingers had worked he had thought through the various sigils that would be necessary, including some that he used rarely.

The shield spell would be fed into a focus which had a barrier with trigger around it. On release of the trigger once the shield spell was complete, a step that probably wasn’t strictly necessary but with little harm in the adding, there would be additional barriers which channelled the effect through a switch into in this case five paths which would then feed the spells into the chain. This would allow him to cast one spell, at a level below his ability to do so, though with the impact that it would have on his djed reserves but have the spell impact directly on all the chain he had made.

[Sultros Blades] Chain Construction

If he were looking to do this on a regular basis Eanos would have been tempted to create some of the runes in a more permanent fashion but that carried a degree of risk since sooner or later even the most stable of rune would crumble and for a barrier to collapse just when he had released the trigger would not be amusing in the slightest. It was easier then to simply rely on the chalk that he had always used and leave the experimentation to experiments designed for that purpose and where a crafted item was not at risk of damage or contamination in some way.

Partly for his own amusement, he started on the next chain as a means to reach the state of meditation necessary to access the djed of the glyphs. It was hardly necessary, but it seemed appropriate and that was quite enough. When he reached the familiar state then he started with the focus glyph, marking it on the swept floor of the forge, the rune familiar enough and then put in place the first barrier glyph which contained it, his mind concentrating on the trigger as he did so.

These barrier runes always reminded him of the walls of the Pitreus citadel and his chalk lines reflected that memory, in this case the glyph indicated the gate where he tied in the trigger so that was where the barrier would give way.

He laid the chains in place to give himself the correct dimensions for the barriers, laying them with the tops close together and then spreading outwards. Surrounding them he drew the barrier glyphs which were once the runes that he’d been taught but now reflected more closely his mindset for them, building in his memories of the solid stone boundaries of his old home.

Between focus and the paths containing the chains he created a nexus of open space with a solid barrier which swept around the focus and connected in the paths below. In the centre would be built the switch and this was the most complicated of the glyphs and the one which he had used the most rarely in the past. For this reason it required a little more concentration than the others had and he paused to run through it in his mind, building it piece by piece until he had the form right to convert a single spell and split it out into five equal parts.

Inside the nexus the first parts of the switch rune were barriers and indeed it was in effect a modified barrier, the most common of all of the runes that he used, but his visualisation for it was the wild underground rivers which carved their way through the rocks of Sultros. His first runes caught and tamed the incoming spell, guiding it into a narrower channel, then it hit the first two rocks then the carefully placed two that followed, each of which split the flow into the paths that followed and linked into the paths below.

As a final step he converted a small amount of his own djed into his Auristic filter and visualised the djed of the glyphs, checking for the way that they affected the djed and he corrected several small errors in his work where the flow was not as smooth as it could have been, then he sat back satisfied.

[Sultros Blades] Chain Construction

With the glyphs complete it was time to take a short break and to renew his focus. But a break to Eanos in this case taking up the new and as yet incomplete sixth chain and to work on it while he cleared his mind of the glyphs and thought again on the shield that he wanted. Judging the amount of djed required was a little more tricky here because of the way that he had built the glyphs, and in hindsight it might have been a mistake to use the trigger. But without the trigger he’d have had to be using both his Auristic vision and be creating a shielding spell so that he could know when to stop converting djed and that made him a little uncomfortable in the drain it would introduce. He was well within his limits for djed but he was all too familiar with how easy it was to push just that little bit too hard and always at the back of his mind the sweet whispers spoke to him, imploring him to do just that. But he had not spent several seasons without using djed at all in order to achieve some degree of healing to throw it all away again quite so easily.

The shield spell was familiar to him and he had tasked before so all of the procedures were familiar. The only difference was in putting the spell into the focus, but that in itself was familiar. So all in all everything was familiar, just the way that the individual pieces were to be put together was not. As such it extended his knowledge and that was something that of itself was interesting for it did not happen all that often.

His fingers worked softly, adding in and closing the two rings, folding them back and pushing apart the middle rings to expose a gap to insert in the next pair of rings. The work was familiar and comforting. Slowly his breathing slowed and his concentration drifted away from the work and into a focus on the djed. It was time to begin.

In his mind he visualised the chain and then drew upon his djed reserves, transmuting the djed, stripping it out of his life force and converting it into a changed form of djed which would attach itself to the chains, clinging to the outer edges, spreading across the surfaces and forming a cover which would move as the metal moved, not tight across the surface but wrapping itself gently across. Then he altered his focus once more and tasked the shield with ability to block sound, absorbing it in and dispersing it. One day he’d perhaps be able to use this to power the shield and allow it to be self sustaining, but for now it was certainly out of reach of his knowledge and skill to do.

The djed was still mobile in the grasp of his mind so now he moved it and fed it slowly into the focus of the glyph and held his breath for a moment to check that it remained there. A little more djed and he converted it to show him the auras of the djed and he could see it as it coiled there waiting for the trigger which he then spoke. The barrier around the focus disappeared and the spell flowed out along the paths that he’d created, splitting at the switch and then flowing down the paths into the chains. He reckoned that the split wasn’t too badly uneven between the flows and made note for the future to take more care of that point. Then the djed of the shield flowed into and onto the chains and clung there. He watched for a moment and then released his vision, satisfied with the process and needing only to test now how well they worked.
