Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

It had been a good few days since Rosela's last visit to the Menagerie, and she'd agreed with her previous assertion that she had no intention of going back. There was nothing more to be done there but more of what she'd already done. She couldn't grow by doing the same old routines; she needed to try harder subjects. However, the only harder subject were the sentient beings that walked the streets around her. There were times she considered going back to the Menagerie and seeing the Symenestra and the Zith, but the thought of seeing their dead eyes, too much like those of the ape's, made her skin crawl. She didn't want sad, broken creatures that needed to be hypnotized into hoping for a better day; she needed to buck up and try her hand at her real targets: people.

She dressed carefully that day, with makeup neither too loud nor too minimal. Minimal would have been best, but she simply couldn't allow herself to go out with it. She needed to look good, but not too noticeable. It was probably a lost cause in any case: she was too good-looking to not get noticed.

Part of her wanted to try out her hypnotism on the shadows, something she'd considered since picking up the discipline. As large a part as they'd become in her life though, she wasn't sure she could trust them with this secret. Followers of Akajia weren't uncommon in her city, and those marked were seen on more than rare occasions. Who knew what the shadows told them? She wanted to believe they were her friends, and perhaps they were in their strange way, but this was a secret she could not allow to get out. Her reputation, and thus her entire future, was staked on it.

Before going out, she sat in the familiar spot on the floor in front of her mirror. There was a lot riding on this day, and her future with Hypnotism likely rode on her own skills. She wanted at least some soothing practice in the privacy of her bedroom before she threw herself into the outside world.

Taking a deep breath, the darkening focus came easily, narrowing her range of vision to her face in the mirror. It had become easier to summon her djed, seen in her mind's eye as fragrant red fog, and she called that forth as well. She imagined herself at a stall, with nameless wares, next to a faceless man. She would catch his eye easily, and make it out to be something small, polite, even accidental. Then she'd begin pushing, so slightly. Depending on the actions of the faceless shopkeeper, she'd try to plan emotional suggestions first, something she hadn't experimented with much at the Menagerie. The shopkeep may be suggested to be racist, or simply disliking the faceless man for some reason. Maybe the price he offered was outrageous. In any case, the man would not care what the shopkeeper thought, and would hopefully be comfortable with the notion of hurting him in some small way, such as stealing an item from the counter.

She visualized the red fog surrounding the man, being inhaled and seeping into his skin. She imagined him falling under her sway. She then cast her thoughts out, as though she were really next to this man. Thoughts of this faceless shopkeeper deserving to be hurt filled her mind, of him having done something to be hurt in a small, petty way. She imagined catching the man's eye again, and moving to the next part of her plan: the suggestion.

There would be some small thing in front of the man, something easily stolen. She would start small, something related to the item, make it desirable. 'Look at that, isn't it nice? I'd like that, I have a use for that, I'd really like to have that...' Then, she'd introduce the idea of stealing the item. 'This guy wouldn't miss that, he probably doesn't make much profit off of it, I could just take it while his back is turned and he'd never know, he wouldn't do inventory on all his small things...'

Rosela herself never did full inventory on the floor every day, though it was periodic. Her items were usually too big to be stuffed in a pocket, and the lingerie, which was small enough, was just opposite her desk. If the faceless man in her mind's eye was a business owner, he'd likely be thinking along the same lines. If he wasn't, then he'd never know any better anyway. After the idea to steal the item, she'd need to make it sound appealing, so much so that he'd actually do it. 'I could really use this thing, but I can't just buy it, I should just take it, slip it into my sleeve and go, he'd never know, he won't be losing any money over it, I really want this thing, I should just take it...'

There wasn't any place to go from there, so Rosela took a breath and allowed the fog in her mind to recede. There was the reminder not to go too far, something The Art of Hypnotism book went on about at length. The hypnotist's strength was in secrecy; planting an idea and helping it grow if necessary, but cutting off anything that refused to grow. Only a master Hypnotist could make use of the blunter tactics, and even those were relegated to 'emergencies only'. Novices, like her, needed subtlety, and the ability to let go if something wasn't working out.

The Benefits of Hypnotism

The day outside was bright but windy, torrents of dead leaves skittering along the cobblestones like small animals. The wind buffeted the cliff until the entire area around the waterfall was continually soaked. As loathe as Rosela was to cross the rickety Christina's Remorse on such a day, she needed to get to the Zhongjie Warrens, and that was the only way to do it.

Bundling her fur-lined cloak around herself, she used to arms to keep the cloak closed and another two on her right to steady herself across the bridge. She saw another ahead, a lean Akalak with a progression of death grips on the rope beside him. If she weren't also terrified of falling into the Bluevein, she might have found it funny. As it was, she reached the other side with a deep sigh of relief that was noticed by an older Akalak with a look of commiseration. Rosela offered him a shaky smile before pulling herself together and starting to move down the street.

The market wasn't as busy as it was many other days, likely due to the windy weather. As unpleasant as it was to be out and about, it was likely the best she could hope for, given what she was there to do. The majority of those out were men, and she assumed women were staying in to avoid catching cold. With many women in the city with child at any given time, staying healthy in the colder weather was likely a huge concern. She made a mental note to look into whether pregnant bellies got cold sooner, like the tip of one's nose. Belly scarves may be the next big thing that winter.

The first stall she approached sold herbs, and was one she'd been to before. They hadn't had any rose water in stock, so Rosela felt justified in encouraging larceny of a businessman who had let her down. The shopkeep was an older human man, slow-moving and none too impressed with her urgent need of the rose water. In luck, there was already a patron at the counter, and just as she approached, the old man turned around the pull another scoop from a bag behind him.

Sidling up next to the other customer, a young Akalak with a close cut mohawk, she caught his eye and offered a polite, but vague smile. He returned it and looked up at the back of the old man. Rosela drew up her fog and pretended to peruse the jars in front of her as she gave the Akalak a sidelong look. 'Check out that jar... Rosemary. I could use that, it's good stuff...' She exuded want and easy need, the attractiveness of the bottle, how even and well measured the herbs were inside. 'That's good stuff, I should have some of that, it's...'

Rosela paused in her suggestions as she realized she had no idea what rosemary was for. To her credit though, the Akalak was now looking at the rosemary with a confused look on his face. As she scrambled to adjust her plan, her luck ran out and the shopkeeper turned back with a small bag. "Here you go, just two gold mizas."

"Oh, thanks." The Akalak, still looking mildly confused, passed over the mizas and took the offered bag. "Hey, this one." Rosela froze in her fake perusal of the jars of herbs to notice him picking up the rosemary. "How much for this?"

"Rosemary? That's ah..."

Not staying to hear the rest of the legitimate transaction, Rosela turned and walked away. A partial success, but she'd failed for no other reason than her own preparedness. Looking around for a stall where she'd actually know what was sold, she continued walking.

She passed a leather working shop, and while she didn't have anything against this particular vendor, she would at least have an idea of what she was encouraging the theft of. She approached slowly, doing her best to look casual, and came up behind a man fingering a leather sheath. It was plainer than one of hers and she could see the uneven stitching as she got closer.

"Here you go, Horlinn," The shopkeeper suddenly turned with a wrapped package. "Tell your wife happy birthday from me, eh?"

"Will do, Corser." In a flash, the customer was gone and Rosela was left as the sole target for the shopkeeper's attention.

"Hello there miss, looking for some nice leather good? A fine purse, maybe?"

Maintaining a firmly professional image, she looked up curiously at the purses, finding all of them hideously ugly and of clearly inferior quality. Pointing to the least ugly of the bunch, she inquired innocently, "How much for that one?" It was possibly the least ugly of the bunch, and could be easily redecorated to look passable if she ended up having to actually buy the thing.

"This little beauty? Just 2gm, and it's all yours." He reached up and pulled down the bag for her to see. "Fine stitching the whole way through; it'll hold up for years."

She hummed in thought and turned the purse over in her hands. She doubted it would hold up for a single year, let alone multiple. "I don't know, 2 gold mizas seems a bit much..." The fog was ready and waiting just below the surface of her mind, and when she met his eyes, she sprang her thoughts on him quietly. 'Is is a bit much, isn't it? The stitching's uneven on the flap and the knot wasn't properly hidden on the bottom...' She didn't need to continue much further, as she saw the emotions pass over his face as clear as day. 'I did my best, didn't I? But maybe it's not worth the full 2gm, maybe she can see that...'

"I-I'm sorry, 2gm is the price. Have to make ends meet you know..."

She could hear the inadequacy in his voice, and he seemed to be speaking more to the purse in her hands than her. She turned it over and made sure he saw her run her fingers over the poorly-hidden knot on the bottom. She caught herself rubbing her thumbs back and forth over the leather and forced them to still. "I know, but even just a little discount?" Still maintaining her innocent voice, she projected the feelings of inadequacy that were clearly taking hold well, and added a hint of obligation. She avoided continuing with fully formed thoughts, as she worried about listing any flaws he hadn't actually noticed. The purse was set gently on the table between them. "What about... one gold miza?" It was a steal, even for an ugly purse like that, but she prayed her plants had flourished enough for him to take it.

If anything, he seemed happy that she wanted it at all, and smiled widely though clear insecurities. "You know what? Pretty lady like you, 1gm sounds good."

Her smile was slow and she tilted her head slightly to keep the air of innocence. "Thank you so much!" She passed over the gold miza and tucked the purse under her cloak.

As she moved, he clearly caught sight of her other arms, and the surprise seemed to hit him especially hard. "So that's what you've got under there! Here I thought you were gathering a collection of bags..."

Being that she'd just fostered inadequacy in him, Rosela offered a laugh. "No, just hands... Good day." She waved goodbye and tucked the bag out of sight, determined not to be seen with something she could clearly out-make in her sleep.

Rosela continued down the Warrens, wondering where to strike next. She'd failed twice at getting a subject to steal, though the reasons for failure were admittedly different each time. Part of her wasn't even sure she wanted to keep going with the whole theft idea; it was just another bad mark on her name if she got caught. With a slight twist of irritation that she'd spent all that time planning for nothing, she headed to the hair stall.

Despite stopping here many times, she never actually bought anything. She preferred to keep her hair down, not only because it framed her face nicely, but it hid her mark from Akajia. On occasion in the summer though, she'd made the half-up look work, and in the back room of her shop, there was no one to hide from. Splurging a little more and getting a few hair accessories seemed like a better and better idea.

She would have to employ a different strategy here though; the human woman that ran the shop was skilled and there'd be no implying her work was of low quality. She wasn't a regular customer that might gain a frequency discount, so what was there left to use? Absolutely nothing at all came to mind, so after a few moments of regarding the stall from afar, she had to tell herself to move on to something else. If she turned this excursion into a regular shopping trip, she'd spend too much money and not get to train her Hypnotism at all.

A few stalls down was a grizzled Akalak selling 'outdoorsy' wares. Rosela didn't know much about what he actually sold, mostly because she had no use for any of it. She could use a new flint though, and maybe see if any advancement had been made in that area so she wasn't freezing her fingers off trying to strike the petching thing once winter actually hit.

"Hello there little miss!" The large Akalak's voice seemed to boom over her head as she approached.

"Hi, I'm looking for a new flint and steel? Or something, you know, better?" As much as she wanted to launch into her hypnotism, she didn't know yet what to use it for. She realized belatedly that she hadn't checked her eyes since getting to the Warrens, and felt mildly anxious about it. However, he didn't seem to take any different notice of her than any other Akalak did, so she felt secure that she didn't look anything more than a little tired.

"Better than flint and steel? Little lady, there's nothing better than a good flint. If you're looking for something better, I'd say you just need an upgrade."

Rosela smile was dim as her hopes were somewhat dashed. Realizing she had an opportunity for hypnotism, she licked her lips and put two hands on the edge of the counter, looking up at his immense height. "There's really nothing else? I just need something for starting the fire at home in the winter." 'She looks pretty helpless, I should help her, she needs me help, she can't go it alone...'

"So I take it your husband doesn't start the fire for you, eh?"

It wasn't the direction she'd intended him to take it, but she could work with what she got. "Oh no, I'm not married."

"Really? Figured a pretty girl like you would get snatched up right quick!"

'She has trouble with the fire, I should help her, I can help her, what can I do to help, she'll be 'grateful' if I help...' She threw in just a hint of lust, hoping it didn't take root too deeply and gain her a stalker. "No... I just...need help with the fire?"

"Well let me see what I got here for you... We have some good fire bricks here, that way you don't have to go out for wood all the time? Tell you what, I'll give you a good deal on a new flint and steel - the best I got - and I can come over and show you how to use 'em." He winked boldly at her and Rosela couldn't help but half-suppress her smile. He was a good-looking man, and she probably didn't need to even use hypnotism to get a good deal out of him. Since she was here though...

"Thanks, but I do already have a flint and steel. How about one of those fire bricks to get me started."

His grin was knowing, and Rosela didn't need to hypnotize him into catching onto her discreet turn down. "Alrighty little lady, you got it." The brick he pulled out was wrapped in cloth and tied in twine. "This thing's pretty much compressed grass heated up and packed into a brick; it'll light pretty quick, and burn a little longer than normal wood. If you have any trouble with it," He added another wink for good measure. "You just come on back here and let me know. I'll be happy to give you a personal demonstration."

Soaking up his attention, Rosela leaned forward on the counter. "I'll keep that in mind. How much?"

"Tell you what, first one's on the house. Trust me, one time and you'll be begging for more."

This time, Rosela couldn't help but blush as a full smile escaped. It felt too long since she'd gotten such bold attention. "I'm sure that's true. Thank you, I'm sure I'll be seeing you again soon." She fluttered her fingers at him as she started to back away, and was saved from a long goodbye by the appearance of another customer.

The Benefits of Hypnotism

By the time she made it home, her bloodrush has faded and she was quite simply cold. Her headache was just beginning to form, but a quick look in the mirror showed she hadn't acquired the red eyes yet. Rolling her head on her shoulders, she replayed her morning, attempting to rehash each interaction. She'd had a lot of success, though not exactly in the form she expected setting out.

She dug her spoon into the side of her candle until it stayed, not wanting to spend all day in a meditative state. She had work to do at the shop and couldn't afford to lose all day to what was essentially her hobby for the time being. The darkness fell quickly, and the red fog clouded her mind's eye. She was tired, and it felt harder to pull up and maintain without her regular focus. The face in the mirror was blurred and she tried to imagine the leather shopkeep's face. Instead, the wilderness Akalak came into view and she imagined buying heaps of things and 'asking' him to carry it home for her.

If she asked in the right way, she didn't need to even use hypnotism, but she wanted to think she could make it happen even without her looks. She'd simply project a need, the need to help her, the want to make her happy, even just the want to help her. For a man like him, she'd need to connect helping her with the possibility of getting her in bed, but other men, ones that considered themselves honorable, they could be persuaded by helping out a helpless young woman. She imagined one of the Kuvay'nas, not Taskel, as he was too similar-minded, but someone more honorable. No one immediately came to mind, and somehow the lack of face made it more difficult to focus.

Her mind started winding down a tangent in which the wilderness Akalak was carrying her through Beautyfest on his shoulders when there was a sharp, metallic strike on the table. The candle had burned down far enough to release the spoon, pulling her from what was now clearly a nap. her headache had vanished though, so calling that her victory, she stood from the floor, and made preparations to go to the shop.
