Kelvic Question

Postby Resuna on December 29th, 2013, 12:47 pm

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what would happen to a Kelvic if they were prevented from changing shape for a long period of time.
My PC was collared for a year of her life, and it was while she was very young (1-2 years old).

I know it wouldn't affect their ability to shift and things, I was wondering if it would have any other effect in their animal mentality or anything.

Kelvic Question

Postby Kalina on December 29th, 2013, 1:43 pm

It's my understanding that Kelvics are primarily animals. Animals that have a unique ablility over other animals - that they can transform into humans. The only thing that changes when they transform is their biological make up. f

For example, their vocal-auditory apparatus, thus giving them the ability to actually form the sounds required to make comprehensible utterances. The mind, however, does not change, and, even in animal form, they are able to hear and understand words, just not replicate them. So, unless your character has had NO interaction with humans, your character can theoretically boast a fluent language. If there is no interaction (and I literally mean zero), then you're kinda screwed, as, for Kelvics, seeing as they age fast, that 1-2 year spread is vital to the learning of a language, even in a fantasy world. The "Critical-Period" in which one must learn a language sorta happens in the roundabout period you're talking about your character being collared in. So... unless Kelvics defy science (and I doubt they do, seeing as they don't learn very fast anyway), your character would have no grammar to speak of and would be mentally incapable of learning any grammatical words. Her speech would be limited to 'eat food', which would cover all manner of things, from what she had eaten yesterday, what she is eating currently, what she wants to eat, and what she will eat in a year's time.

If you're planning on the character being isolated.. I'd seriously think about the consequences. Yes, it would be fascinating, but it would get dull pretty fast. Because, without grammar, she would have no concept of abstraction, so she wouldn't understand the past or the future, or that anything happens outside what she can see. She might even literally think that people didn't exist if they were in her line of sight. She wouldn't understand, or ever be able to understand, anything other than concrete objects, such as chairs and tables etc. No happiness, no sadness, She'd feel it, but would not be able to put such a thing into words.

so there needs to be interaction with humans who speak around her. But then again... I'm going from the perspective of a pure human, in our world.. Mizahar might be different from our world, and Kelvics might be different from humans. :) but, until I'm told otherwise, I'm going to continue following my studies when it comes to the learning of language!

As to personality, well, like I said, they're animals. Even if she could change at will, she would still constantly have animalistic characteristics. Such as... well if a Kelvic's animal form is a predator, seeing a small mouse might make the pupils dilate, or she would stare at it, unmoving. A deer, as prey, might be very twitchy and flighty in human form, always searching for danger.

Yes, she might be a little bit more feral than other Kelvics, and she might not no how to use a knife and fork, but she can learn. At least, my character did. you just gotta remember that, if you're starting out with Resuna being 2, straight after she is uncollared, she is going to be very ignorant of how do do things, even maybe things like dressing herself. Things we take for granted, she will need to be taught. I have to admit, with Kalina, it's the most fun I've ever had with a character, watching her try to understand the concept of money... things like that :) I'd recommend it to anyone.

Anyway.. yeah, keep some form of human interaction, make your life a little bit easier, and good luck, I think it's a really cool idea, to have a Kelvic collared so long, and I wonder if she'd be traumatised or anything... the world is your oyster, as they say!

Kelvic Question

Postby Translucent on December 29th, 2013, 2:55 pm

It's actually quite common for slave Kelvics to be forced to stay in one shape or another...The bigger Animal kelvics are collared as humans to prevent becoming animals, the smaller animals like birdss etc are hooded as animals to prevent being made human. It is very common in the Kelvic-slave department.

A kelvic who bonds extremely early which usually happens to slave kelvics are stunted emotionally and mentally. Their development just stops and they are pretty much completely dependent on their Master's wether they were forced to stay in animal form or human form or not. As kelvic you would still be able to learn the languages even in your animal form, just not be able to use the words.

Kelvic Question

Postby Resuna on December 29th, 2013, 3:05 pm

She was collared in human form as her animal is a large predator. And she did have human interaction, she was definitely not in solitary confinement.
I was mostly curious to know if they may loose any of the animal instinct after having to stay a human for so long.

She was never bonded either.

Kelvic Question

If she was collared as a very young child (around 1 year of age) the bond, from what the lore states, would have happened then.

Kelvic Question

Postby Translucent on December 29th, 2013, 3:11 pm

The first type is a light bond, made early and easily. People, often children, receive Kelvics as pets and bond easily to them so long as the Kelvic is very young and their personality hasn’t completely finished forming. The resulting bond is not a strong core-deep bond but rather very lightly made.. The Kelvics are protective, but not deeply choosy and demanding. These Kelvic with early light bonds also do not develop well after bonding. Their minds seem to freeze in a state of servitude that does not allow them to develop cognitive skills like a normal young adult would. In other words, a very young bonded Kelvic halts somewhat in their development and stays very simplistic if they bond too young. They also recover very well if their bondmates die or otherwise reject them. They can be bought and sold, and though their ties with their previous owners are severed, they can rebond easily to other owners.

Thats my point of reference

Yeah I read that bit in the lore. She was collared to be sold, but was never actually bought so she never bonded.

Kelvic Question

Postby Renate Winterflame on December 29th, 2013, 3:54 pm

I think what they mean to say, in so many words, is that she wouldn't lose her connection to her animal form (because she is first and foremost an animal) and would still retain a lot of her inherent jaguar habits. But the inability to physically become that animal would result in a delayed development in learning how to do things like survive, hunt, communicate, etc. She would feel pretty lost and would probably fall back on a very subservient outlook, considering how she was raised and how Kelvics develop when exposed to only humans at a young age.

At least that's what I got from the lore and other people's responses.

Kelvic Question

Postby Gossamer on December 29th, 2013, 3:59 pm

First off, let me clear up a few things.

If you read the writeup closely and thoroughly, I have tried very hard to answer these questions already in there. Kelvics are NOT primarily animals. Whomever posted that is utterly wrong and possibly hasn't read the writeup. They are an engineered artificial species using an off world alien sentient creature called a Kelderon Mimic. The first six generations (A-F) weren't even bred, they were in essence test tube crafted. After F, they became a viable species. They were made from HUMAN and blends of birds and mammal DNA. That is why you don't have symenestra, Isur, or even reptilian kelvics. The writeup all states this clearly.

Kelvics, just because they are collared or owned, don't have to bond. That's entirely up to them and their owners. You can't force a kelvic to bond and you can't keep one bonded. So the original poster here doesn't have to be bonded anywhere along her storyline. Its my opinion a kelvic in slavery would be less likely too especially if their animal form was so tightly bound. So negative situations = less likely to bond, but pleasant positive situations, even one of servitude, would result probably in light bonds or deep abiding bonds of respect.

Kelvics would never loose the ability to shift, forget, or shed their animalistic traits due to being confined in human form. IE. You can't make one human just by making them look human 24/7. They are what they are.

You are always free to come to article creators Resuma with questions to avoid the type of misinformation that gets spread in this Q&A forum sometimes. If you are reading the article in question, whichever it is, hit the history button on the side, look down and see who the original poster was. In 99% of the cases, the person that authored the article is the original article poster. And if they are still around they will gladly help. I know kelvics are complex creatures, but there is a lot of information out here that is incorrect.

Some things to watch out for...

A. Kelvics are just animals.
B. Kelvics aren't that intelligent.
C. Kelvics can't do magic.
D. Kelvics can't read and write.

None of the above are true. Please don't let anyone tell you different.

Kelvic Question

Postby Gossamer on December 29th, 2013, 4:03 pm

Also, none of the below is necessarily true, beyond the fact that she wouldn't loose her connection to her animal form. She is not primarily an animal. She is primarily a kelvic. Kelvics learn like other PCs, so if she learned survival or hunting in her human form, she'd be just as good at it in her animal form. She wouldn't feel necessarily lost, subserviant, or be developmentally delayed in any way. Kelvics are highly social, and so as long as she had socialization with people, she'd likely be fine. Absolutely no where in the lore does it state kelvics suffer from servitude. They were BRED TO SERVE.
