Crossbreeding Dogs

Postby Wanda Endust on January 6th, 2014, 10:01 pm

I was looking through the list of dogs and was curious about whether crossbreeding of these dogs is allowed. Also, if it is possible to crossbreed, would the resulting dog lose the special abilities of his parents? For example, if you mixed a Bozderon Shadow Dog and Jivatalus Ghost Dog, how would the offspring have both the infared vision and the ability to detect ghosts? Would the abilities be dampened? Or would they simply be a mutt with no special abilities?

Crossbreeding Dogs

A question I can answer!

It's a miracle.

Actually, I had Spirit do just that. She mixed a Kalean Spicecoat and a Luvanor Grassland Hunter. A mouthful. Anyways, she wanted to try and create a mix good for hunting (Luvanor blood) and happy in the cold (Spicecoat genes).

To actually answer your questions, I'd say that the abilities would probably be dampened. You might end up with one that just has infrared vision, or just ghost sensing. Or as you said... nothing. It's all genetics, really (which I really know little about). I don't think you'd get something with nothing though, and actually... the dampened might not work. If you see it as a infrared and ghost gene... you can't exactly have half a gene, can you? So I'd say luck of the draw for one of the three other options...

If there was a perfect mix, however, they'd be very, very expensive. More expensive than the other two, at least.

Am I making much sense? I haven't really given you an answer, have I? :|

Thanks for answering!

That actually does make sense -- so they'd be more likely to have one ability or the other, with a small chance of having all or nothing?

Crossbreeding Dogs

The Dog breeding works in a lot of ways like half-breeds do on Mizahar. They are Mixed Breed dogs considered jack of all trades master of none. That means their main cool abilities.. like a ghost dog seeing ghosts automatically, will not translate unless they are purebred, but some trades, like coloring, coat thickness, etc will. So if you want a special doggy ability, stick to a purebred. If you want to breed mutts that are good all around animals, go ahead and mix races. You can even try to develop new traits and hence new breeds in game if you'd like too.

Crossbreeding Dogs

Thanks for the clarification, Goss. And for the swift answers, both of you! This is all very interesting. I'm mostly looking into a good dog for Wanda to keep as a possibly-all-purpose companion, so a mixed breed may be the way to go in that respect. But this had actually piqued my interest so I may or may not work on dabbling around with it IC sometime in the future.
