Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

56th of Winter, 513

Orabelle would never rant about how she thought marriage would put a negative affect on your life. She didn't think it was bad but felt it wasn't necessary. Cheva, forgive this tanned woman for her opinion on marriage for she thinks it is not necessary if two people are in love. She dreams of looking like an Ephyrian Queen everyday not on a special occasion. She dreamed of having everything a married couple have except the marriage. Was it her parents talking? A perfect couple that was just destroyed by marriage? Most likely it was. Her parents were impacting her life and not in a positive way. Orabelle didn't need a man to support herself. This stubborn girl could support herself... well she had found a way to support herself.

She could have everything she wanted if she became apart of a special community. The navikaks of Riverfall. After a lot of thinking and stressing she decided to just do it. The Akalaks will make sure she is comfortable and she'd be entering motherhood. That wouldn't be so bad. Loving the child would be easy, caring for it would be a struggle but in the end worth it. She'd just hope she's qualified to carry such a powerful being in her. Orabelle could just imagine her life as a mother of an akalak. It would be sweet victory.

Orabelle hesitated in front of the building. Her body began to shiver and not because she was cold but nervous. What if she wasn't qualified? What if they tell her she can't get pregnant at all? Orabelle began scaring herself as she began to think about all the "what ifs" that could happened. She wanted to run home and hide but her feet were planted to the ground. Orabelle Deepseeker, you are going no where! Get yourself together and walk in to that three story building!

The girl didn't waste any time, she marched up to the building and walked in. She looked around at the nakivaks there. Some looked like they saw evil in it's true form while others didn't even recognize where they were. Most of them were voluntary right? Orabelle hoped so. It just wasn't right to force someone to become something they didn't want to be."Excuse me." Orabelle said loud enough for everyone to hear. She didn't know who to approach and just hoped someone would greet her.

OOCSorry for the delay. The holidays ate me alive.

There was no secretary waiting at a front door to greet the young woman as she approached the tower. Instead, the posh confines were open, inviting, and utterly dominated by a man who's office door was open and who seemed to be answering some sort of correspondence. There were women coming and going and several Akalak that loitered around, some seemingly waiting for something - perhaps an appointment. There was a mixture of moods. Some women looked incredibly nervous, some looked rather comfortable in their surroundings and offered smiles to the men as they passed down the halls, and others seemed to be there waiting, as if like the men who loitered, they too were waiting for an appointment to be kept.

He looked up when the young woman approached and offered her a smile. "Hello there. How can we help you?" He asked, rising from his desk as was proper and walking around it to offer her his hand. "I'm Tuvos Jerusc, and I'm sure I haven't seen you here before. Are you interested in becoming a Nakivak?" He asked, his eyes smiling as he pulled out a chair for her.

If she answered in the affirmative, he'd move back around his desk and launch into what seemed to be a predetermined speech. "It's my hope that someone of your age and beauty would be interested. We pay roughly 1,500 GM for the delivery of a healthy child. You can take several forms of contracts... the first is one where you are kept at a very nice level in our society and given a living expense and a stipen of housing to your liking but in exchange you have no choice in who takes your contract and must abide by their terms. The second level is a bit more ideal for most women. They sign on, get modest housing and a modest stipen of living, and can negotiate the terms of their contracts with anyone who approaches them as to being interested. If the male is interested enough, you can even negotiate for a higher upkeep or to move into his residence. Just about anything can be negotiated. Under the first condition, there is no payback obligation. Under the second, you will be credited a seasonal account and if you go over the limits of that account, you must pay back the money after the birth of the child. You can have full access to your financial records, what you've spent and what you've earned." He said, pausing for effect and to let her take some of what he said in.

"The first method means you are obligated for only one child before resigning on. The second method means you are obligated for one child and if your expenses exceed the 1,500 you will get paid after a healthy birth, then you will be in debt and must go into a second contract. Once you agree to this status, you will be given a non-removable silver bracelet that denotes your status in Riverfall Society and that you are open to a contract." The Akalak said, his eyes warm and inviting.

"Once you have signed a contract then your silver bracelet will be removed and your Talvis - the one who owns your contract - will forge you a new one in gold and whatever gems you'd like. Once you wear a gold bracelet, you must meet your contractual obligations to your Tallvis. This means you must be open to sexual contact upwards of three times a day at his discretion, though you can negotiate for more or less. He is obligated to treat you fairly and kindly and be gentle in his pursuit of an offspring, but again I must stress you will be obligated to service him at the negotiated times. You must stay healthy, have regular checkups, and once pregnant, you can refuse his advances if your pregnancy is confirmed by myself or one of our healers." The man said, smiling softly.

"If this is something you are still interested in, there is a physical check I need to perform on you and some questions you need to answer candidly before we can fully sign you up."
He offered, pausing to let her digest the weight of his words.

If she answered no - that she wasn't here to inquire about becoming a Nakivak, he'd definitely wait for her to fill him in on the purpose behind her visit.

For the moment there was no answer. No one answered her at all but women went in and out of an office. Some faces were glowing while others weren't. That scared the already nervous Orabelle. But than there were the Akalak men. They puffed their chest out full of pride as they exited the office. There wasn't an Akalak man that left the office unhappy. Devious grins and devilish smiles that made you think they found a million mizas on the ground. As the green and blue men passed they gave seductive looks to Orabelle and the other woman.

After getting over the handsome men, Orabelle continued her walk. She was greeted by a man she assumed was incharge. His name was Tuvos? Anyway, he was giving her a warm, welcoming smile which eased her nerves. She smiled back and tilted her head."Yes captain, I would love to become a nakivak and serve the community." She stopped in front of the office door and leaned against the frame of it."I am Orabelle Deepseeker. I believe by my last name you can tell I'm half svefra."

As he began to tell her the options of a nakivak, Orabelle began long and hard. The second option did sound like the better one. You would get housing and spending money -that you'll have to obviously have to pay back."I love the second option. I can see why women choose that one, it offers more and gives a bit more rights." Her voice croaked as she talk.

"Oh my love of the sea. 1,500 mizas? That more than I could ever make." Orabelle giggled, her smile remaining on her face. She still remained smiling even after he mentioned a second contract. She was cracking on the inside. If she made it through the first birth, why would she go through the second? Was she really willing to take a chance dying a second time.

"Sorry for interrupting and the bracelet sounds great and all but... Would I be able to see the baby? I mean, I birthed it and if there's a chance I survive, I would like to at least see the child..." Her voice began to soften and she cut herself short.

"I want to do this, really."

OOCIt's fine :)

Tuvos smiled. “That’s fantastic. We have so few women here, once we do get them joining us in the city, we like to see that those of your gender gets a good safe start in life among the Rivarians. So many other places its hard for women. Here, we like to welcome them. And I must tell you if you do not want to become a Nakivak, no one will think the worst of you. We have a place called Godiva’s Refuge that will put you up, see you taken care of for ten days or more free of charge, and help you find a permanent place to live, a job to make a living, and start out right as well. It’s just that with the Nakivak program, you have more time, more flexibility, and are able to do a good service to the community in providing children to our men. It is also a big help to them interacting with women. There are few here and often your kind seems foreign to the men of the city. So you do a double service in relieving the pressures of finding a mate and gaining in their ranks.” The Oathmaster said.

“It is very nice to meet you Orabelle Deepseeker. You have a nice ring to your name.” He added. Tuvos started pulling paper work from his desk, starting a file on her.

“In regards to your question, if you pick the second option, you can negotiate the terms of your contract with males who approach you. You can ask in the terms that you be allowed to see the baby and be part of their life. Many Nakivak even stay on to raise their children and some even marry their Talvis’. The father always has the final say in the upbringing of an Akalak son, but often the mothers find themselves with plenty of influence over the child’s life. After all, you’ve just given this Akalak a child, a new rank, and hope for our races’s future. Most of us see that in a very good light and make consideration for a Nakivak’s feelings.”
He said, smiling up at her.

“Our medical procedures are getting better and better. There is a good chance you will be fine.”
He said patiently, reassuring her. “Now, do you mind if I ask you some questions?” He said, riffling a parchment and adding notes to it.

“I need to know your age, if your race is entirely Svefra, and where you are from. Then I need to get into some more delicate questions. Let me give you the list, so you can answer them for me. Take your time… there are no wrong answers and no one is going to judge you or your answers.”
He said thoughtfully.

“Okay, once we have age, full race, we’ll need to know more. I need to know if you’ve been with men before and if you’ve ever had children. If so, how did the birth or births go in terms of ease for you and health of the child or children. I also need to know if you’ve ever had a disease or illness that involves your reproductive system.. burning, itching, bumps, pests, or discharge; that sort of thing. I’m sorry these questions are terribly personal, but I need to know to get you accepted into the program. I would like to know if your human monthly cycles are regular and without complications and if they are irregular or have complications, what sorts do they have?”
He asked, pausing to let her catch up.

“Now, if all those answers are to our satisfaction, then I’ll need you to come with me for a physical exam. I am a doctor so I will be doing the exam. You can request a female to do it as well, but since you are entering into the Nakviak program, or attempting too, its best you get used to men examining your body. Some may want too prior to signing a contract or taking you as a Nakivak.” He said. He wrote a few more things down about her and then continued…

“The exam is simple. I’ll need for you to disrobe and I will check your body for lumps or bumps that might indicate wasting illnesses or other problems. Your breasts will be examined and I will check your ovaries and womb for proper shape and size, making sure you are not pregnant already and that there won’t be any apparent problems from the get go. That also goes for a disease screen.. and I’ll look for any wounds or signs of old injury. Old injuries won’t preclude you from Nakivak status, but preexisting pregnancy and signs of disease in your reproductive system will. It is also for your protection too. If… well…” He hesitated this time.

“Some men have tempers. We have thousands of Nakivak that go through the system and live very happy long lives and enjoy the benefits of this from Riverfall society. But we can’t tell what goes on behind closed doors. So if you have any complaints about roughness or less than stellar treatment, a good record of previous injuries goes a long way to prove current and new injuries if the question ever arises. You have our utter protection, and result of any abuse while you are in Nakivak status will generally result in you being released from the program and compensated for your time. This has happened only once in the last ten years and I’ve seen probably three hundred Nakivak in that time. So it is rare, but I must tell you it has happened and there are resources and protections you are offered. Any man on the street seeing that silver bracelet on your wrist will defend you and give his life if necessary. That silver bracelet means our future is more secure, and they know it.” He stated.

“Now.. any more questions or are you ready for the exam?”
He asked.

[Oathmaster's Tower] Just give yourself up.

Orabelle clasped her hands and inched herself a bit more into the office."There's a few things I love doing." She paused and pulled on a strand of her hair."I love doing hair and make up. I love the sea. I love children and I can't help but want to carry one in my stomach. And I love your city." Her fratavan accent enhanced when she spoke the last sentence."But I am also here for my own benefits." Orabelle blushed at her last comment. It was a little selfish.

Orabelle thought negotiating wiry the father would be just find. But she still got the chills from the word marriage. It just wasn't meant for her, at least she thought it wasn't."That's good, I wouldn't want to carry another being for Laviku knows how long, experience the miracles of birth and not be able to see it or hold it. I'm guessing here akalak children are more valuable than diamonds and mizas?" She was glad to here there was less of a chance of her dying. She nodded when he asked if he could ask some questions. She guessed he was going to ask if she were healthy and fit enough to carry a child.

"I am a twenty-three year old mixed blood. My mother is an ephyrian and my father was a svefra." She told him as she thoughtfully thought about the other questions." No, I've spent my early young adult years with my mother and a woman who took she under her wing. Although I wish, no I don't have any children. My reproductive system is fine... I've never had a disease or illness that involved that area." Orabelle stayed calm but these questions were very personal and uncomfortable. She, herself was surprised she did not croak or stopped talking in general."My cycle is fine, it comes monthly."

"I guess if I'm going to have to get use to it."Orabelle shrugged a bit but was just a little freaked out. The women of her pod would walk around bear-chested and as a young child she wondered how they'd do it without embarassment.

"Okay..." She nodded slowly. "I have a temper too." Orabelle laughed a bit. There wasn't much for her to say now.

"Nope, no questions."

[Oathmaster's Tower] Just give yourself up.

The Oathmaster smiled, taking notes and nodding to Orabelle’s questions. He made careful notes of her answers and her bloodline. Then Tuvos stood and beckoned Orabelle to follow. He kept what she could assume was the start of her file with him as he lead her down a long hallway, up a brief set of stairs and into what appeared to be an infirmary. They walked into a pleasantly decorated room that looked more like a reception area than an exam room, save that there was a long marble table that looked just slightly curved to the shape of a woman’s back and fairly easy to recline on. He took a seat at a desk that overlooked the table and gestured to a screen discretely in the corner.

“You may disrobe there. I would give you something to cover yourself, but unfortunately the exam requires your nudity. I will have an assistant who is female conduct most of the exam. Though I do prefer to do parts of it myself. Please, disrobe and we’ll get started.” He said kindly, then glanced up as the door opened and closed. A Konti woman walked in all smiles and pleasant in nature. “Hi. I’m Kira. Here to assist. You ready?” The woman asked, though pointedly Orabelle wasn’t.

The woman walked to Tuvos, checked over his initial assessment, and then gave a nod to Orabelle. They waited until she was completely disrobed and had come out from behind the screen to get started.

Kira’s part was soon evident. As Orabelle stood for her, Kira went over Orabelle’s body with a fine tooth comb, calling out any scars, markings or blemishes for Tuvos to note down. She gently grasped the girls arms, lifting first one then the other to run her hands down her armpits to look for lumps or bumps that might indicate illness or disease. The exam was quick, thorough, and even included a bit of searching through Orabelle’s hair which Kira claimed was lovely and gorgeous and decidedly lice free.

Tuvos seemed relieved.

Then Kira asked Orabelle to recline on the table and Tuvos got up to perform the rest of the exam. He had her place an arm under her head and examined first one then the other breast for lumps having her switch opposite hands as he finished one breast then moved to the other. Then he touched her running his hands down her stomach and pressing gently where her ovaries and uterus were tucked against her pelvic girdle.

He frowned, noting faint stretch marks and the placement of her pelvis. “You sure you haven’t had children before or experienced a dramatic weight loss? Your skin appears to be stretched… its very faint but I know what I’m looking for and your pelvis appears to have splayed too. If I were a betting man, I’d say you’ve had a child before, girl.” Tuvos said, then slipping lower to touch her intimately. He didn’t make the exam personal, he just visually and then with his fingers checked her womanhood for signs of disease and distress. He found her not untouched and fairly well open. Only once did he ask for her to breathe deeply and then he was done.

“You have a larger than maiden uterus too by the feel of things. All signs from my expert opinion say you’ve given birth before. Are you sure you haven’t?”
He said, studying her thoughtfully. Then, carefully, he washed his hands in a basin across from her table and told her she could get dressed.

Kira remained the whole time, protective and watchful as if to make sure that nothing other than a standard exam happened.

“I think you are a good candidate. You’ve passed the physical with flying colors and I think we can safely sign you up. Will you be wanting to dictate the terms of your contract and pick your own Talvis?” He asked, moving paperwork over to where she could sign on a form once she got dressed and he settled back down.

It was a strange feeling knowing this Akalak had just examined her and touched her intimately but yet was acting like it was nothing to him.. just business. If Orabelle signed, then he’d take her up to the top level where bracelets were forged and see to it one got placed on her wrist. And then he’d add her name to the candidates that the Akalak could pick from when they came to see who was new to the program.

He didn’t think it would take long for her contract to be picked up. She was a beautiful young woman, healthy, and looked to be a returning mother. Most men could ask for nothing more.

She could not tell if the notes Tuvos was taking were good or bad. It didn't matter anyway, regardless she'd be nervous. He was trying to make sure she'd be a fit nakivak but it felt like so much more. When he was done, he took her down a hallway. They soon entered a nicely decorated room."You guys sure know how to make a girl feel comfortable." The sentence sounded so sarcastic, yet she was being serious.

"Fine with me. As a child, the svefran woman use to take off their clothes all the time. I use to think it was normal until I tried doing it on Zeltiva." She paused."Excuse my ugly body." She was starting to take off her dress, as she did, a konti woman entered."Hello Kira." She dropped the dress and nodded."I'm ready now."

After she was disrobed, Kira took something and began going over her body and calling out her scars. She was slightly embarrassed."The scars are from my childhood on sea. You would think I'd grow out of them..." She was a little surprised when Kira raised her arm and began to check it. It was long after she searched through her hair, which Orabelle did not let a lot of people touch."Thank you! A small trick is to not wash your hair too often but don't wash any less. Constantly brush it too. That helps a lot."

Like Kira instructed, Orabelle climbed aboard the table. Tuvos seemed to take it from there, placing her arm underneath her head and checking her breast for lumps. She was comfortable with being nude but having someone, and not just a man, look you over was the complete opposite. If she didn't want to become a navikak, she wouldn't even hesitate to get up and walk out.

"Oh." She responded to him touching where something very important is. It was more of an awkward situation. Tuvos wasn't afraid, and didn't even hesitate one bit to do his job. Orabelle wanted to make a joke just to make a little less awkward for her but it wasn't the time.

"I never had a child or experience terrible weight loss." She sat up a little surprised as he describe how the skin was stretched."Not that I know of, I highly doubt I can forget having sex and carrying a child." Orabelle shook her head. He continued with exam which included her to take a few deep breathes.

"I'm very sure, sir. I don't recall carrying a child or even having intercourse." There was some truth to her voice, yet there was a bit of hesitation.

"Really? I cannot weight to become a mom!" She did a little applause for herself."Yes, I will. To be perfectly honest, I believe I should have some say since I will be carrying the child."
