You can become both but it's very unusual. We have one on the Island just now.

Well I have both Flux and Hypnosis, I thought he'd wind up becoming a Mudpool Warden for the "adventure." As an Akalak his darker side needs that thrill or it would go berserk. The lighter side is the one who would fully appreciate the apprenticeship...

It's very rare that someone can be an Initiate and an Apprentice. In fact Celeste is the first in Sahova history. Sahova is not big on letting their apprentices risk their lives in the Testing Grounds unless its for a good reason. They would rather they risked their lives in the Citadel instead lol
