As a bard, I’m kind of disappointed that Rhaus and his Gnosis, Audius, aren’t fully developed. So, I was thinking about making a suggestion about this particular Gnosis. Any ideas are welcome, as well as any suggestion.
First of all, the positive marks will, as the description in the lore states, "to manipulate crowds and individuals through music”. The first thing that comes to my mind is the thought of an epic concert, where thousands of people share the sentiment of being part of something, sharing the same ideals and the like. Indeed, in real life, the power of music is strong.
The negative mark, on the other hand, will make the user unable of appreciate any music and poetry, and even, if they got more than one Gnosis, completely deaf. Is Rhau’s way of saying “So, you keep screwing with us, the musicians? Here, take this, so you stop pestering us!”
I also thought about the mark itself: a musical note (or even part of a sheet) on one’s body. Any part is good; but it’s better in extended parts, like the outer part of the arms, the back, chest, thigh, or belly. The positive mark should look like a stylized and elegant note, and if someone looks at it for a while, they will be able to hear a faint, yet nice song, almost like background music.
The negative mark would be similar, but instead of elegant, it will be like the writer of the note has been drunk while writing it. Think about a musician in a frat party, writing some nonsense in the forehead of a passed out friend with permanent ink. Again, if you look at the mark of a while, you will hear some background noise, but instead of a melodic tune, it will more like an annoying and repetitive cacophony.
Now, the progression:
Marked [Cursed] – 1 Gnosis Mark
Those marked by Rhaus gained some of his respect as a musician, as he recognized their actions and musical spirit. The first Audius grants an immense creative potential, filling the user’s brain with amazing ideas for songs and poetry, and also will be able to learn to play any musical instrument very quickly. The ideas will flow from them like water in a river, and they will find inspiration on the smallest details of life. On the downside, those marked by Audius have the need of writing down any ideas they have, because they become frustrated, irritable and easily annoyed if they can’t write their ideas down.
Cursed individuals will lose any passion about music and poetry in general. All music to them will sound monotone to them, and they will not be able to see any sense in lyrics or poems. Their life will continue, but as the old saying says: without music, life would be a mistake.
Favored [Despised] – 2 Gnosis Marks
Apart from the increased creativity, individuals with a second Audius mark gain the ability reach the crowd. At will, they can make their voices and musical instruments capable of being heard by any person watching or listening to them. No matter if they are on the high end of a theater, any person will be capable of hearing clearly someone Favored by Rhaus as if they were right next to them. Great for plays, concerts and collective poetry!
Despised individuals become entirely deaf, but not only they will be unable to hear any music; they will be unable to even feel a rhythm. On top of that, they will be unable to read any form of poetry and to some extent, written tale, as they will simply be unable to see the words, instead seeing just a bunch of gibberish.
Priest/Priestess [Adversary] – 3 Gnosis Marks
Rhau’s priests not only can project their voices to anyone listening and watching them, but they can also make them feel what they feel. A sad song will bring sadness to the crowd and individuals, a happy song will make them feel cheerful, and other songs will have different effects. The musical and vocal skills of those marked by a third Audius needs to be amazing, as the mark is only amplifying the effects of the individual’s music.
Rhaus has no adversaries, as he only ignores them.
Champion [Nemesis] – 4 Gnosis Marks.
“Virtuoso” is the only word to describe someone of a Champion’s considerable musical talent. Now able to not only make insanely large crowds of people feel the same enthusiasm and passion, if not a greater, of the musician playing, but now they will absolutely feel like a universal mind, synchronized together as the music bonds the people together, no matter their creed or place of origin. An army in sync with a Champion of Rhaus will become one of the most powerful forces there is, but it’s not very likely that the Champion would use their talent in such end.
On a side note, Rhaus will relocate the Gnosis to a hard to see place, not only to play a little prank on his beloved champion, but to make it hard to further test him/her: the mark will become a musical sheet, containing the notes of the Champion’s personal song; a song coming from the deeps of his/her very soul, hearth and mind. If the Champion manages to write down the song and play it perfectly, or at least well enough, the resulting song will be so epic and legendary, no one will be able to forget it. If there’s a second Valterrian, the surviving people, and their descendents will still know the song.
Rhaus has no Nemesis. A deaf person can’t be the Nemesis of music, doesn’t it?
