Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

[Red Diamond Fashions] An Act of Desperation (Rinya, Rosela)

A quick glance at Rinya’s face and Rosela hummed thoughtfully, running through palettes for brown eyes. ”Let’s see, something in a nice chocolate…” Two hands fluttered over folded piles of dresses. ”Something with some nice highlights, so you don’t look too pale? I had something chocolate on cream here… Aha.” Four hands lifting up the top half of the pile, she pulled out a flouncy little affair with a high waist and a riot of ruffles at the knees. ”A little cutsie, almost baby doll. A little different than what you got last time, but isn’t dressing up what Beautyfest is for?” She tossed a hand whimsically, seeing in her mind’s eye her own dress, a sleek line of burgundy velvet, unfortunately not yet made.

”Oh, or maybe you want something a little less childish…” It was an adult event after all, she thought. ” How about…something like this?” Searching hands found a creamy cotton dress with a tilted hem and only a thin black belt for a waistline. ”It’ll give you a little more of a streamline look, something a little less playful.” Spreading it out, she laid it out next to the first dress on top of the stacks of clothing.

”So, ahem,” She raised her voice slightly to involve Jorin in the conversation. He irked her, no question, but it felt unnatural to completely ignore anyone standing in the middle of the store. ”You two are…together?” She could easily guess so, given their contact walking in, but saying these things out loud was the first step to getting details. ”I hear Beautyfest is just lovely for couples. Music, dancing, lanterns on the beach…” She sighed and looked up in memory, one hand planting on her hip. ”I’d only just arrived in the city when it came around last year – hardly knew what was going on. You can bet though,” She leaned close to Rinya with a sly smile. ”I’m getting some of that free makeup this year.”

Part of her wanted to commiserate over the acquisition of beaded necklaces, something that had been grand fun the year before. However, it was fairly obvious that Rinya wasn’t the type to be giving out kisses for beads, at least not when her thin, nervous-looking man was around. Returning to the subject at hand, she waved a hand over the presented dresses. ”So, what do you think? Long, short, pale, dark…”

OOCThis was insanely late. Sorry sorry sorry!

Well, the cold shoulder was better than the acidic glare. At least that was what Jorin told himself as Rosela chose to devote still more time helping Rinya, and he took that time to look about curiously. The truth was, he very rarely ever entered Rosela's shop. The woman had a reputation for being a fierce and capable negotiator, and while Jorin liked to think he was capable of holding his own, he wasn't sure he was quite up to the fierce Eypharian's level.

Rosela had suggested a few colors, beginning with what she described as a 'nice chocolate'. Well, that probably would match her eyes, at least. Jorin knew only very basic information about clothes; despite being the unofficial inventory manager of the Amphitheater, he was tasked mostly with acquisition of clothing, not their appraisal. Hence why he got screeched at on both ends.

Still, Jorin couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the many-armed woman's choice. Even Rosela admitted it was a bit cutesy, but Jorin just couldn't see Rinya in such a... primpy dress. It seemed perhaps a bit too cutesy. Like as though Rinya was supposed to skip down the street in it, humming to herself with a little basket in her arm and a small flower in her hair. Still, Rosela was the fashion expert. Perhaps cutesy was in fashion this season.

Then again, maybe not. Rosela's next choice was definitely more conservative, but still quite pretty to Jorin's untrained eyes. He still did not trust himself to speak, however, preferring to remain as silent as possible and let Rinya make her own decisions as to which dress she'd want. Truth be told, Jorin was still getting over the fact that Rinya wanted to attend at all. He was highly tempted to ask her to go with him; he hadn't planned on attending, but if she was going to go...

Jorin almost missed Rosela's question in his musing, and he started slightly as he absorbed what she was asking. Were they... 'together', as she said? She'd commented that Beautyfest was lovely for 'couples', and Jorin flushed slightly at the implication. He liked Rinya, that was for certain. Soft tinges of his feelings were drifting across the bond and he neither could nor would stop them. But despite the progress they had made, he still was not certain what exactly they were. Everything was in flux and he just wasn't sure, and before he could stop himself he'd blurted out, "We are friends."

Jorin winced slightly. That really wasn't the best word to describe their relationship, though truthfully even despite his skill with words he still couldn't find a suitable one for them. Were they romantic partners? They'd only shared a few kisses - Jorin was fairly certain that did not qualify. He could have used the line he'd given Farline; namely, that Rinya was his bondmate. That much was undeniably true, but he couldn't do that without exposing Rinya as a Kelvic.

Not that Jorin necessarily thought there was anything wrong with her being Kelvic, but he did not wish to out her as one without her permission. If she chose to tell Rosela, Jorin had no issue with it, but he wouldn't say unless Rinya did. After all, he didn't know if she particularly wanted it to be known she was Kelvic; the shapeshifting race did not exactly enjoy a very high rank on the social ladder of Riverfall, after all.

So that just left ... friends. Well, they certainly were friends, that was for certain, but Jorin couldn't help but wrinkle his nose. The word had slipped out, and now he couldn't take it back. With a sigh, he gave Rosela an unreadable look. "I only arrived this season," he admitted. "I've never witnessed Beautyfest but from what I hear, it must be quite an event." Knowing Rosela, she would probably make quite the splash at the festival. After all the woman loved being the center of attention. Jorin then turned to Rinya.

"I..." Jorin honestly had no idea what to say to his bondmate, his insides a mess of different emotions that were surging by too fast to pick out individual ones. He certainly did think they were friends, but he wanted them to be more. Yet he was worried that simply labeling them as such had condemned them to always be just that.

With a soft sigh and a slight cough, Jorin reestablished control over himself, smoothing his shirt with one hand and tried again. "So, what do you think, Rinya?" he asked, echoing Rosela's question. "Any of those dresses interest you?"

[Red Diamond Fashions] An Act of Desperation (Rinya, Rosela)

It was a little amazing, how easily Rosela shifted from rather annoyed to perfectly friendly. Rinya wasn’t so sure she could do a job like she did and still have enough patience to be kind. Of course she was known for a sour attitude in general towards anyone at her work--Rhys especially. In the very least Jorin was out of the crosshairs… and that made it easier to focus on the task she had just assigned herself to. Finding a dress for Beautyfest apparently. She had enjoyed shopping more than she had originally thought she would the first time--there was no reason why she couldn’t attempt to enjoy it now. Beautyfest itself was still quite a ways away time wise--there really was no point in overthinking it right now.

By the time Rinya had even gotten around to gathering herself up for this new task, Rosela was already through with a scan to her face and her fingers were already busily making their way through various dresses. Rinya could feel her eyebrows jump upwards of their own accord as Rosela pulled the first dress from the pile she had already gathered. It was very pretty, but honestly something she herself could never imagine wearing. The woman did have a point though--it didn’t hurt to try something new. "Well… I do think it’s pretty but..."

It only took Rosela a moment move on from one dress to the next. While the first dress was not necessarily in her taste, Rinya didn’t want to offend the woman either. She really did think Rosela worked wonders--the creativity alone was impressive. Rinya admired the second dress pulled from the pile with keen eyes as she tried to picture herself in it. The cream was lovely but she really was looking for something a little darker. "Beautiful, but not quite it..." Rinya was sure she’d know the dress when she saw it. If nothing else if Rinya couldn’t find it here she was sure she’d never find it in Riverfall period.

Rinya cocked an eyebrow slightly in Rosela’s direction as she shifted from the dresses to… Rinya felt her face turn exceptionally hot over the simple question. Her golden eyes shot over to look at Jorin who flushed as well under the comment that Beautyfest was ‘lovely’ for couples. Rinya wasn’t sure if she should answer or let Jorin--honestly despite their contact they seemed to have… kept things fairly simple between the two of them. She certainly didn’t want to label them something and come to find out later that Jorin just didn’t… feel the same. The bond vibrated with emotions that were difficult for her to pick out, mostly because the bond itself still was fairly new. She had no idea just how deep it would eventually go, but for the moment it just well… vibrated with emotions.

Jorin finally answered her that they were ‘just friends’, and Rinya wasn’t entirely willing to deny that. They were friends if nothing else. Though she was fairly certain friends didn’t quite kiss like they did on occasion either. So Rinya dropped her eyes from him to the dresses in front of her, missing the wince that slid across his face. Jorin tried to cover the question with the comment that he was fairly new like she was and had never attended the event before. Rinya released a quiet breath and did her best to focus back on the dresses. She really didn’t know what to make of his answer as much as she told herself it didn’t matter. She could feel his eyes on her after a chime however and Rinya pointedly ignored him for the moment. There was no point in getting flustered over this!

"I don’t… know?" Rinya winced herself slightly before grinning sheepishly at Rosela. "I was hoping for something dark, yet… goldish colored. Long… and preferably strapless. I really liked how that blue dress fit me."

Jorin thankfully kept his mouth shut as Rosela presented the dresses, and she was glad she wouldn’t have to verbalize – again – where he could put his opinions on fashion. Rinya, as the one wearing the dress, didn’t quite take to either of her suggestions, which wasn’t entirely unusual. Beautyfest would be the affair of the season, and every lady deserved to be in a dress she was in love with.

”Friends? Oh, okay…” She did her best to keep the words neutral, but she found herself intensely curious. Friends, but formerly something more, or…friends on the cusp of something more? Rinya was clearly uncomfortable with the line of questioning, lending credence to there being far more to the story. She couldn’t pursue it though, not with them around each other. They’d dance around the issue for each other’s sake and they’d never get anywhere.

She was surprised to hear Jorin had arrived so recently, and turned to look more directly at him. ”Only last season? You must have only just arrived when you visited last.” She did her best to beat down the associative emotions his last visit brought, as she was now in sales mode, and didn’t want to scare Rinya off. The little sweetheart would look just darling at the festival, even if she had to kick Jorin out to do it. ”Beautyfest was a blast last year. People so rarely dress up for anything around here, so it was a bit surreal to see everyone putting real effort in, you know?”

She did her best to smooth over the awkwardness that had arisen between the two and turned back to Rinya. She clearly wasn’t feeling the offered dresses and Rosela was already looking around for her next options. ”Okay then, goldish… How about something a tad more formal?” Straightening, she moved further down the row towards the wall, where the more elaborate dresses were. ”Sequins would look just lovely. If we’re going for the same cut as your blue dress, you’ll want it fitted through to the hips…and then strapless…” Trailing off, she pulled out a trio of dresses: one streamlined look in gold-cream with sequins decorating the bust; another knee-length with flounced and dark gold embroidery; and a third with ribbon trim and sequins down the full length, covered by an overlay of chiffon. ”What do you think? These are a bit more expensive than what we were looking at, but you’ll definitely be turning some heads.”

Jorin had no idea if his response was the "correct" one or not. Honestly, his relationship with Rinya was very hard to define. At that point, the only thing Jorin knew for certain was that Rinya was his bondmate and he cared for her a great deal. The were indeed friends but... was that all they were? Jorin realized with a start that he didn't want them to be "just" friends. But that was something he'd have to discuss with Rinya later. Not here, not with Rosela's icy glare causing his words to fly out of his head.

Rinya for her part dropped her eyes to the dresses, and Jorin tried hard to pick out her emotions from the bond. But there were too many for him to accurately pin down any one emotion, the bond simply hummed with a plethora of different things, and he honestly didn't know whether perhaps his own scattered feelings was muddling things. In any case, she wasn't completely unhappy with his assessment of their relationship, but then again, the bond was so new to him, he may have simply missed it.

Jorin coughed slightly and nodded when Rosela mentioned that he must have only just arrived when he last visited. "Yes," he replied carefully, trying not to trigger Rosela's temper again. "I'd just started working at the Amphitheater then." And even then, they'd piled on extra responsibilities onto him, like making him the de-facto inventory manager, which caused the whole mess to begin with. Jorin didn't understand why he had to play errand-boy. Didn't they have understudies for that? But of course, he was a new actor, hardly influential enough to start ordering around understudies.

As to Rosela's comment about people dressing up, Jorin just shrugged. "I suppose I'm more used to people dressing up than most," he replied, "though probably only because I work at a place where dress-up is the norm." Jorin for his part saw no reason there would be any difference between how the Amphitheater was now, and how it would be when Beautyfest came around. Though he suspected there might be a higher than usual rate of costumes mysteriously "disappearing" on him. Normally he wouldn't care, but since it was his head on the chopping block if they never got returned...

Regardless, it didn't seem to matter anyhow. If Rosela was curious about what he said, she didn't make any indications of it. Instead, she turned to Rinya and began offering her potential dresses, and Jorin felt rather useless again. Rosela mentioned something about a blue dress, but Jorin had never seen Rinya in any sort of blue dress. It must have been something she'd purchased earlier... Jorin put it out of his mind for the time being. Rosela had moved on as well, pulling out a trio of dresses, all rather fancy-looking affairs with gold trims and sequins.

Jorin had to agree that all three were quite impressive-looking. He knew she'd certainly turn his head with any one of those dresses. Walking over, Jorin took Rinya's hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, giving her his most encouraging smile. In the end, it was Rinya who had to make the final decision after all, and Jorin knew he'd love to see her in any one of those dresses.

Because of RL issues and a lack of energy that I can devote to Mizahar, I've decided to step down as an AS. I'm sorry to leave so suddenly, but it's truly been fun while it lasted. Hopefully I can come back some day.
