Day 45th of Winter, 213 A.V.

It had started out just as any normal, dull day. Reven had awoke to the cold, early morning air, washed up, and trekked outside with bow in hand toward her hunting spot. The weather was fairly descent with deep blue, crystal clear skies and the temperature not as cold as the previous day. Meaning she wouldn't have to shift to keep herself warm while she hunted. Going about her routine as normal; Reven would wait, watch, follow, listen, then wait. It was a pattern she'd grown use to especially hunting so close to the Fringe Forest where others were out and about. She didn't expect to catch much today. Winter was a hard season to live through and that, she knew all too well.

When the sun rose and mid-morning approached, Reven hunkered down next to a large, barren tree to refresh herself from the day's adventures. As the days went by, the Kelvic was slowly becoming more in tune with aiming her bow that nearly a quarter of her catches were shot in the skull. She had been practicing relentlessly to aim better and pull quicker which was certainly showing through her daily hunting. She was proud to see hard work paying off and smiled cheerfully at the thought of it.

Pressed up to the base of the tree, Reven retrieved the leather water skin from her pack and gulped down the liquid inside. Pulling the container from her lips, she breathed out, relaxing slightly to the sounds of nature around her. The Kelvic enjoyed her time alone when she could be in the woods by herself without the distractions of kids, people, and responsibilities. She also hated it because of the invisible target board on her back every time she wandered into the area. Reven was use to the dangers, growing up around them had made her accustom to the risk of death, but that didn't stop her from the terror it caused. Frankly, she was afraid to die.

Only would she ever express these feelings to her bondmate if she was ever able to find one, but even then the young Kelvic wondered if they would ever know her deepest fears. How close could a bond be and what would it do to her? Reven assumed it was pleasant especially with the examples other bonded Kelvics presented to her when she had the opportunity to meet them. It made her jealous to the very core and question her existence in life. Was she good enough to be with anyone? Was she competent enough to impress and please someone? Her introverted personality didn't help her situation but what could she do? Every time she tried to be friendly, it was awkward and when she's awkward, she's embarrassed. When that happens, she's bustling with frustration that can only be resolved by pounding her paws into the soil for a run.

Was she ever going to amount to anything?

Reven pushed a dirty palm to her forehead, shaking away the thoughts as best she could. It would be better not to think about them. It would be better to hunt... The thoughts were endless however, and repeated in her mind like a sickening tune that would never stop. Lazily, Reven lifted her eyes to stare forward into the forest, briefly lost in her train of thought. The forest beyond her was dark, menacing, with a sense of death that was nearly palpable. Was this really a place she took comfort in?

Through the barren branches, sunlight ripped the shadows apart, giving way to a path of golden rays that fell upon the back of a deer. It stood with its head bent, grazing quietly in the warm sunlight. Reven watched it, transfixed, as the light seemed to bath the deer in a gentle yellow glow. It's fur reflected softly, drenched in droplets of golden-silver and white haze.

"How beautiful..." She muttered, watching the deer.

It was at that moment she realized her prey was standing so openly before her and to say she wanted to smack herself at that very moment was an understatement. How could she not see the deer?! The deer! Reven berated herself not only for day dreaming at a time like this but for also speaking out. The deer had noticed her then because both of its ears were perked up in her direction, looking as if it was about to run. With one hand, Reven slowly reached for her bow, the other moving to slide an arrow from its quiver. It was too late and before she had time to nock the arrow and fire, the deer was already sprinting off.

"Shyke!" She spat, scrambling up to chase after the deer.

Reven was trying to run and aim while keeping coordination with her feet and where she placed them. Stumbling, the Kelvic halted as she watched the deer bolting down a straight path, exactly what she needed to bring it down. Nocking an arrow, Reven pulled the string back and steadied herself, holding her body firm while exhaling to keep aim. The tip of her arrow barring right as the wind was pushing against it from that angle, Reven aimed for the back of its skull. It was getting further away and she only had a few feet left before shooting it would be no good and quickly, she released the arrow, watching it whiz toward the deer.

Hazel eyes stared, adrenaline pumping through her body as it flew closer and closer to its target.

Suddenly, out of no where, a mixture of brown and white fur hurled from the right side of the tree line, taking out the deer and pushing it to the left, out of view. Reven stomped her foot, anger pulsing through her.

'That's mine!' Came her growled response, thoughts exploding with rage.

Reven knew exactly what had happened and began stripping off her closes as she ran to the spot the deer disappeared from. Naked now, she closed her eyes and pictured in her mind the form she wanted to take, her form, and saw herself on all four paws in the middle of glorious light. When Reven opened her eyelids, she was standing on padded paws with a warm coat of fur covering her up.

Bursting through the brush, Reven watched as a wolf fought with the deer. Its muzzle was dug into the side of the deer's neck, sharp teeth puncturing and pulling, trying to rip open the buck's throat. The Kelvic felt herself holler with rage, sending out a snarl to cease the wolf's movements. With sudden fright, the hungry animal growled and stumbled back, head down and butt up, its fur was standing as high as Reven's. The wolf was afraid but appear to stand its ground against her, setting claim to the deer. She would not have that...

Inching forward, a low growl echoed from her throat as Reven made a show of herself. She dug her claws into the soil, pulling it up while she moved, attempting to circle the wolf. Oddly enough, it mirrored her movements in the same fashion but did not portray the same intimidation or fearlessness her stance radiated with. And before it could process its next course of action, Reven was on top of the animal, biting at its throat, wanting to rip it open with her teeth. The wolf screeched horrible sounds, wrestling underneath her as it tried to scramble away. It bit and yelped and screeched, clawing at her to try and bleed her as well. Unfortunately, it succeeded but only mildly, with a scratch to her arm.

Reven released the creature, hoping that was enough to scare it away from her prize. Luck was on her side today because the first opportunity it got, the wolf ran with its tail tucked back into the brush and out of sight. The Kelvic waited for its return but after another minute of silence, she decided it was gone for good. Turning back to the deer, she cursed when she didn't see it laying on the ground like she expecting.

Inwardly sighing, the cougar dropped her head down, disappointment flowing through her like an icy tidal wave. How could she forget about the deer? Without much effort, Reven caressed the dead grass and snow with her naked thighs, shifting back into her human form and pounded her fist into the ground as if that would bring the animal back. She had waited all day for an opportunity at game and let it slip between her fingers because of some wild mutt!

Rustling of a bush nearby roused her attention to look straight ahead. There, in the shadows, she caught the form of something stalking away and tilted her head to inspect the image further. The scent of blood was still present in the air but it also waft against the wind up ahead, sending the iron smell up her nose and almost instantly she knew that was the deer.

Almost falling on her face trying to hurry back to her pack, Reven quickly grabbed the hunting knife she possessed and sprinted back to the clearing. Following the scent of blood, Reven was upon the deer in an instant and without thinking, threw her body against it. It fell, kicking and screaming much like the wolf but Reven wouldn't have it. Without another word, she released the blade from its sheath and smashed it into the buck's skull, through its eye. It continued to thrash but she only pulled back and struck it again, making sure it was absolutely dead before ceasing her strikes.

Reven was gasping, eyes wide and looking upon the animal as if it was one of her worst nightmares. Pausing for a moment to catch her breath, Reven leaned up against the deer, finding warmth from the body heat slowly fading from its corpse. She had caught a deer...

She caught a very heavy, very nice deer!

Sure its fur was a little ripped up and bloodied, and yes, it did have brain particles oozing from its eye socket, but it was dead and it was her's!

Head bent into the deer's stomach, a chuckle sprung past her lips before full blown laughed followed. Someone was certainly watching out for her today.

Leather Made Easy!

Reven hauled the deer by the fur of its neck back to her territory. By the time she had crossed her scent, the sun was already perched high in the sky, indicating the noon hour. She had to work fast in order to preserve the skin and meat of the animal before it began to rot.

Shifting to her human form, the Kelvic quickly threw on her garments and grabbed her hunting knife and a thick, bound, brown leather book. Upon opening the cover and inspecting the first page, the title read:

"The Complete Compendium for Preservation and Processes of Animal Hide"

Thin fingers quickly pushed the pages aside, looking for specific instruction on cutting up the deer. Reven already knew how to gut the creature for the most part but hoped there was a guide for that as well. Her eyes glanced over the page once she was able to locate it before a heavy sigh past over her lips, displeased that there was no guide for removing the entrails. Pushing on, she closed the book and set to work gutting the animal.

Beginning it was the hard part, at least for Reven it was. The woman knew she had to be careful with the intestines or else it would ruin the meat she could store, or sell. With that thought in mind, she made her way behind the animal, lifted up its tail, and cut a circle around its anus. Reven frowned softly and grunted, curses flying from her mouth after a moment as she realized she forgot the rope in her pack to tie the end off.

Once the rope was obtained and the end of the intestines was tied, Reven moved to the deer's stomach and lower torso. Working her knife into the flesh of the animal, the Kelvic had its skin peeled back and arms deep in its chest cavity.

The Lioness knew most people would probably cringe at the sight of entrails, possibly even lose their lunch. Thankfully, Reven had no qualms about the slippery, wet blobs the organs felt like or the strong scent of iron and blood as it covered nearly all of her arms and torso. What a sloppy mess it was becoming but all of it felt so natural to her that she didn't care.

Sun light was pressing down on her tanned flesh, igniting her skin with its warm rays as she worked away. Sweat beaded on her brow and she quickly brushed it away, smearing blood across her forehead. Reven continued on as the hours ticked by, carefully inspecting the insides, pulling organs gently from the ribs, cutting through the sarcophagus so that once she was able to detach the entrails, everything would slide right on out.

And that it did.

Out of habit, her bloodied hands tangled into her hair, coating the strains with maroon pigment before she became away of her action. Reven was glad no one was around to see her this way... She enjoyed having an air of elegance and right now, everything Reven did was the complete opposite.

Hands weaving their way through the brown pack, Reven pulled out her water skin to try to wash the blood off. Once her arms were dried, she snagged the book out and flipped it to the page, reading it aloud to herself for emphases.

"It is best to have the carcass held up while removing the skin from the body. This can be done in a number of ways but some of the most common ones are nailing the animal to a board or stringing the animal up with rope. The guide focuses on the use of rope as a means of preparing the carcass to be skinned. To begin, find a location that is durable and sturdy. Take time securing a location that best meets these needs to ensure there won't be any risk of the carcass falling off during the skinning process."

"Durable and sturdy?"
Reven glanced at a tree. "Hm... It'll have to do for now..."

Her hands reached for the buck's legs, dragging it with all her might toward a lone tree. Reven placed the carcass at the base of the tree and reached for the nearest branch to test its resolve. Under the stress of her weight, the branch snapped easily and fell apart once her fingers clutched it. Concern enveloped her thoughts for a moment while hazel eyes analyzed the tree. It was most likely rotted and probably hollowed within. If that was the case, stringing the deer up would definitely bring the entire tree to its side.

Reven leaned forward and gave the trunk a tap with her knuckle. A low 'thunk' echoed back to her as if mocking her with triumph and confirming her worst suspicions. Menacing eyes moved around the area, trying to spot another tree within the vicinity of her area. There were other tree, but enough of a distance away that Reven's tired body neglected to face. This was her only option.

"By the Gods!" She huffed.

Returning to the book, her eyes skimmed the page for the next set of instructions. "With a sharp knife... incisions into the leg..." Her brow furrowed. How exactly was she suppose to do this? "Knots to prevent movement... keep head face down... Uhh."

Reven snapped the book shut and sighed. The directions gave clear instruction but they were not as informative as she had hoped or maybe it was just because she had a hard time grasping new things. Never the less, skinning this nightmare in disguise was going to be harder than she thought without a teacher. Was she even doing things correctly?

"Hmm... I just have to get it up."

Encouraging her body forward, Reven grabbed the hunting knife and proceeded to hack two distinct holes into the buck's legs. It was sloppy and messy and undoubtedly ruined the meat of the legs. Regardless, the Kelvic strung the rope through one hole and tied it off as best she could before trying to hoist hemp over a branch in the tree. It was thick and appeared sturdy enough. With a grunt, Reven launched the rope up and over, catching it when it fell from the other side of the branch. Stringing it through the other hole in the deer's leg, she pulled hard on the rope, hoping to lift the deer up. It was heavy and hardly moved from its place on the ground.

Reven tugged hard, pulling on the rope till her face was red and hands white from the effort. Sounds of something breaking halted any further movement from her while she examined the deer for any broken bones. It appeared fine so she continued her attempted to hold it up. Those attempts where put to rest though as she was suddenly stumbling back. The air knocked out of her lungs when her back hit the ground hard and it was only a little while later that she realized it was the branch that made the noise.

And it had broken.

Gazing up at the sky, Reven sucked in a breath and closed her eyes.

This was definitely going to be a lot harder than she thought...

Leather Made Easy!

She didn't care about the meat, the bones, the antlers, the organs. All she wanted was the hide. That was the reason she embarked into the forest today was to find whatever hide she could to experiment on. Unfortunately, skinning the animal was turning into a disaster. Reven was close to throwing up her arms in defeat when she decided to tie the deer by its head to the tree in an attempt to rip off the skin. Its body was mangled at this point, limbs broken and sprawled every which way. The Lioness felt a spark of guilt for the way she had handle the animal with less respect than it deserved. Reven finished tying the rope before moving over to the buck with its empty stomach facing up to her. Hunting knife in hand, she gently cut along the fatty membrane between the skin of the buck and its fur coat, slowly peeling it away from its body.

Reven had been at this for hours and from the way the sun glanced past her shoulders, she knew it was turning to the late afternoon/evening hour. After removing the tail from the buck, Reven grasped the hide near its neck and yanked on it. The little bit of fur she had cut away slid away from the body of the animal and before she knew it, Reven had torn the hide right off the carcass.

Wasting no time, Reven turned to assemble her belonging into her pack and made her way back to the Stained Pelt. Knowing the meat on the animal was ruined because of her sloppiness, Reven left buck's body slumped against the tree. She hoped it would bring other predators into the area. The Kelvic needed more skin to experiment tanning with. It had been a journey back to the Stained Pelt but once there, Reven ventured inside, blood covered and basically in her undergarments.

Attempting to avoid the clutter hanging from the ceiling, the first person she spotted was Karril, a tall, quiet man with great talent for the bow. He was actually one of the reasons she took up the weapon. "Afternoon, Karril." Reven greeted, setting the freshly skinned pelt on the bar top. "Is your father busy today? I was hoping he could help me with some things." She could tell he was inspecting her garb not only because of the way his eye ran over the blood covering most of her flesh but also because of the slight bend of his brow.

"I would have washed up, but I didn't have anything..."

Karril shrugged, intrigued by her stained outfit and probably curious as to how became such a mess. "I'll go get him. Hold on."

Turning to look around while she waited, the Kelvic assessed the items within the shack. She found most of it to be pelts, leather, things made from bone, weapons, and other utensils needed in the field. It was cramped inside but somehow the atmosphere was cozy and homely, something she was not use to but enjoy immensely.

"Reven? Hello!" Looking back over the bar, Karlak was smiling warmly toward her. He was one among few Akalaks the Kelvic trusted and didn't mind returning the smile. "If it isn't my favorite Kelvic. Looks like you're still getting into messes. How old are you now? Five?"

"Two. I just celebrated my birthday actually." Her fangs showed when she smiled but the man seemed not to mind it. He had known her growing up, had seen her skitter into the shop with Mutaldi and had formed a very good relationship through the years. Reven also appreciated his personality and the fact that he didn't seem to treat her as if she were some pet just because he knew what she was. "I'm sorry to bother you if you're busy, I was wondering if you could help me with something. I took this off a deer a little while ago in the Fringe Forest, but I don't know how to take care of it and the good for nothing book I'm using isn't helping." Gesturing to the pelt on the bar, Reven handed it to the older man as he looked upon it with quizzing eyes. "Are you planning to sell it?"

"Well, I was actually trying to make leather."

"Leather? You know how?"

"No." She answered. "I was trying to use the book but I'm not really understanding it. I was hoping you could help me."

Karlak whipped his head back and laughed. "A book! Hahahah! And you were trying to do this out in the forest? Are you crazy?!" Reven frowned, offended by the comment but understood his meaning behind it. "Reven, if you needed help with tanning leather, why didn't you just come to me in the first place? It would have been much easier and a lot less of a mess." He smiled, nodding to her blood covered outfit.

"I understand you're a very busy man, I didn't want to disturb you." Reven admitted, shrugging.

"Nonsense. Come, lets have a look at this." He waved his hand, moving to the back area of the shack where the vats were contained. Reven hated the smell of the vats and knew once she walked out of there she would have a mild headache from the fumes. It was the price to pay for what she wanted to do. Working with leather was an art that she wanted to perfect, not only for the convenience of crafting her own armor but also for the opportunity of coin. Lots and lots of coin. Moving to a wooden bench, the master leather worker laid the pelt out on the table, examining the cuts she made. After a time of silence, she finally heard him 'tsk' and turned to give her a disapproving stare. "I have to say, I'm on the line with this one..." He sighed. "Why are you wanting to make this into leather anyway?"

"Uh, well." She tapped her fingers together. "I... wanted to learn how to craft leather. Make it into things." Gulping softly, the Kelvic looked up at the man. His eyes reflected exactly what she was hoping not to see. "I was wanting to learn how to tan my own leather so that I could craft my own leather so that it will be... well, mine! Original. Completely. My own bags, my own outfit, my own armor."

"Reven, I haven't seen you in quiet a while and if I didn't know you, I would wonder if 18 years had past already. But you are young, you have time to learn as much as you want. This is a lot to take in all at once and if you're really interested in the craft then you need to start with the basics. Have you ever worked with leather before?" Reven didn't realize how much she'd regressed back to a child in that moment, tapping her fingers together nervously, eyes down cast as if she'd been caught snagging the sweets. She didn't like it... "No, I haven't."

Karlak shook his head. "You'll burden yourself with all this information. If you want to learn the craft, let us focus on that for now then when you understand it well enough, we'll focus on how exactly that leather is made. Now—" He held up the pelt, bloodied and frayed as it was. "This can be crafted into decent material but there are some punctures in the pelt. It is still a good pelt to work with so I wouldn't mind trading 2 rabbit hides and 1 wolf pelt for this. That way its a fair trade, the tanning process is already done and we can get started immediately. What do you say?"

It wasn't exactly a what she was expecting but it was better than nothing. "Sure, that works for me." With a nod, the man left the room to fetch her hides, mumbling words under his breath as he walked out of sight then return almost instantaneously. Where was his limp? "Great, let's start with some basics."

Placing a small patch of hide on the table, Reven figured it was one of the rabbit skins from its size, Karlak set a bundle of utensils down next to the skin. Some of them were metal, long and thin, while others were thick with jagged edges. The Kelvic noticed a mallet in the mix and something that look like it would be used to puncture the leather but she had not a clue. Karlak had been going over the details of the utensils while she inspected them, naming off each and who he had them specially made by. "Reven." His tone took on a kind of sternness as he placed his hand upon her shoulder. "For the time being, while you're practicing with me, you may use these tools. But you will eventually have to buy your own so I suggest you start looking."

The Lioness had to stop herself from sighing in front of them man. She was barely making ends meet as it was, how could she afford to purchase not only the leather but the tools as well? Maybe in time, she would develop a skill for it worth enough of employment but as of right now, it was just more stress upon her shoulders that she didn't want to think about. "I understand Karlak."

"Alright then, let us begin." There was a grin on his lips and a glint in his eyes as he delved into the explanation of the tools. "These are what you will need to carve patterns into leather. These are essential in crafting anything with leather so you want to always make sure you have not only the proper materials for the project but the proper tools as well."

Leather Made Easy!

"I think it would be good to have you start off with making a pouch, what do you think?"

Reven nodded, looking over the tools Karlak placed on the table. He had gone over each of them; a knife for cutting, wax thread, buttons, needles specifically crafted to handle leather, a mallet, some gouging tools, and something the Akalak had designed that punctured holes into the leather easier. "Which ever is easiest to understand, that's the course I want." She smiled, feeling slightly overwhelmed from the many items sitting before her. "Am I going to be using these today?"

"Most of them you'll be using today but it's better to get use to the tools now since you'll be using all of these in the future." Reven nodded as the Akalak began his instruction. "With that rabbit skin, what you'll want to do is cut out the pattern in the leather. Never work with leather, or any kind of fabric for that matter, without a pattern. If you want sloppy cuts, that's the way to go but if you want nice, finished work, you need a pattern." Karlak held up a thin piece of wood shaped like a mix between a rectangle and an oval. It was a fairly decent size and was able to cover most of the Kelvic's palm. There were two holes near the top of the wooden plank which Reven assumed was for tying the pouch closed. "Take this and put in on the Leather, space it out so you have enough room for two of these and make sure to mark it with the pencil."

Following what he said, the Kelvic set about taking the piece of wood and tracing out a pattern on the piece of leather, sliding and angling it so that it fit comfortably on the small piece of leather. She marked it carefully however, Reven couldn't keep her hands still and made a few mistakes on the hide. Nothing permanent, thankfully. Once she finished tracing the pattern, her hazel eyes glanced up to Karlak as she held the hide up to show her work. "Good" He responded with a smile. "Now take the knife and cut it out. Go slow with it..." He warned. "While you work on that, I've got to tend to some things..." And then he was gone, leaving her alone with her task.

How hard was it to cut through leather? It looked easy enough to work with and if it was anything like skinning an actual animal, then she was going to breeze through this. With confidence, Reven grabbed the knife and pushed it into the leather. The material appeared to absorb the press of the blade causing her brow to furrow. With enough strength, Reven was able to puncture a hole into the hide and begin cutting. She tried to angle around the patterns she had drawn out and was successful in doing so, however, because of her lack of patience, the cuts ended up messy. It had taken her several minutes to carve out the pattern before Reven was able to pass them off to Karlak once he returned. Upon looking over the cut hide, he laughed. "I've seen worse." He chuckled. "But this can still work... Now take the thread and lace it through the needle... Once you've done that, you need to align both of the pieces you cut. Start your way from the top and this time, go [i]slow[/r] Reven. This part requires patience. Leather is not easy to work with."

"I'm finding that out." She breathed, pushing stray hair from her face.

"Yes, well, let me show you." Karlak whisked the needled from her fingers and bent down close to the Lioness so she could see he's example. The needle had ridges on the end of it which helped puncture the leather. Once it was through, he moved to the second piece before sliding the thread through both holes. With an expert hand, Karlak knotted the loop before repeating the same actions once more. "I want to let you know, don't ever thread without marks. For now, since you're learning, this will be fine but later, always make sure you have marks on the leather so you understand where you need to tie the pieces together. Here you go." He handed the leather back to Reven.

Peering down at the leather, Reven held the needle awkwardly but did as he told. Taking the needle, she pressed and wiggled it into the leather as it slowly started to pop through. Smiling and moving onto the next one, Reven cringed in pain after a moment as the needle stabbed her finger. "Ouch! Mmm!" Popping her finger into her mouth, she glared down at the utensil, curses running through her thoughts. Karlak chuckled and shook his head, knowing full well what happened. "Reven, there's a thimble on the table, I suggest you use it."

"Why didn't you tell me that in the first place?!"

His answered with another shake of his head. Reven grabbed the thimble and stuck it on her finger, slid the thread through the holes and tugged tight. Looking the thread around once more, she repeated her actions, slowly threading the pieces together till she tied it off on the opposite side from where she started. "Wonderful, I finished it!.. Now what?" Karlak approached her and took the item from her. He began to flip the outside into itself and soon, he was holding a brown, leather pouch that appeared lopsided and awkwardly stitched. The Akalak moved to lace a leather strap through the opening of the pouch before handing it back to Reven. It was small and could probably hold small chunks of meat, or berries. Maybe a handful of herbs. It was small but it was nice and it was the first thing she ever made.

Reven smiled. "Well that wasn't too bad." Karlak laughed. "No, it wasn't, but it becomes a lot harder after this point Reven. Are you sure you can handle this craft?" Shrugging, after a tick, she nodded. "I think so. Every path has obstacles to overcome." Nodding, Karlak patted her shoulder, guiding her toward the door to the shop. "Then I'll see you back here tomorrow."

OOCSo, I'm sure it's obvious this thread took a kind of noticeable turn. Not what I was aiming to do, I just want to clarify, but I hope it was a good read!
